Mayor Gray Presents Medal of Honor to Leo Johnson

First-Ever Mayor’s Medal of Honor Recognizes Heroism in Family Research Council Shooting

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) -- Mayor Vincent C. Gray today presented Leonardo “Leo” Johnson with the first-ever Mayor’s Medal of Honor in recognition of Johnson’s heroism on August 15, 2012.  On that day, Johnson, the Operations Manager at the family Research Council (FRC), despite being shot, disarmed an assailant and protected others at FRC, possibly preventing further bloodshed.

“Leo Johnson put his life on the line to wrestle a firearm away from an assailant and prevented what could have been a very tragic situation,” said Mayor Gray. “He is a hero and it is my privilege to recognize his bravery by awarding him with the Medal of Honor.”

Two Metropolitan Police Department officers also were recognized by the Mayor and Police Chief Cathy Lanier for their actions during the FRC incident.  Commendations for Acting Sergeant Timothy Holmes and Officer Walter Gilmore highlighted the outstanding judgment and professionalism they displayed in responding to the incident, calling upon their training to accurately analyze the situation and take appropriate action.

The suspect in the case, Floyd Lee Corkins II of Herndon, VA, has been charged with the federal offense of interstate transportation of a firearms and ammunition, along with the District of Columbia offenses of assault with intent to kill while armed, and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence.

Can anyone tell me what occured on the 1700 blk of Kearney St NE yesterday?
There were multiple police cars, including ones at each end of the block
blocking access and what appeared to be a crime scene van. They were there for
hours.

Thank you,

Andi

The lookout was broadcasted to both 1D and 5D units, due to the location of the offense. Approximately 10 minutes later 1D and 5D units spotted the vehicles and suspect in the area of Bladensburg Rd and H Streets NE. The officers attempted to stop the vehicle which fled with both 1D and 5D officers in pursuit. After a chase, assisted by the MPD helicopter, the suspects were apprehended in the 600 block of 15th St NE and the vehicle recovered.

Hello,

Thank you to those who joined us for our safety walk last night!  We had a 1st grader who attends Langley Education Campus with us.  He was excited when we walked by his school!  We also had a little dog named Quincy, who lives on Quincy.  Thanks also to ANC Sylvia Pinkney for attending.

As always, thanks to Officers Boykins and Yates for biking with us....and also to Lt. Wright, for welcoming us at the beginning of our walk.

Gallaudet University | Office of Communications and Public Relations
The following statement can be attributed to Gallaudet University President T. Alan Hurwitz.

Since placing Gallaudet University's Chief Diversity Officer on paid administrative leave, Gallaudet University has been called upon by several external organizations to immediately reinstate Dr. Angela McCaskill in her position as Chief Diversity Officer. We recently became aware that several of those external organizations plan to hold demonstrations at Gallaudet University starting this week.

As much as I understand the views that some outside organizations have about the immediate return of our Chief Diversity Officer to campus, at the same time we need to move forward at a rate appropriate for our entire community.

I'd like to reiterate that while this has become an issue beyond our campus, as President of Gallaudet University, my number one concern is our university community - our students, faculty, and staff and so many others who support us. I act on their behalf, not with any agenda other than their well-being. I will continue to take whatever steps are necessary to ensure that this campus remains a safe environment for our entire campus community.

The university administration has been conducting very productive meetings with student organizations including groups that represent students of color, and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students, as well as faculty and staff leadership. The university's Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Board is also developing strategies for moving the community forward.

I would like to commend our students - as well as our faculty and staff - who have shown remarkable maturity and restraint under the complexities of the situation. I know our community will extend the same measure of civility and respect we have shown each other to those outside the campus community who choose to express their concerns and perspectives.

District Government Prepares for Hurricane Sandy’s Effects

Mayor Gray Declares State of Emergency as Workers Clear Storm Drains, Distribute Sandbags, Prep to Remove Debris; Multiple Agencies Will Work through Weekend to Ready District

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Mayor Vincent C. Gray has declared a state of emergency in the District in anticipation of the effects of Hurricane Sandy and a simultaneous Nor’easter, which are expected to rake the region beginning late this weekend and continuing through the early part of next week. He and other District officials have been meeting to coordinate preparations for the storm, and multiple agencies are working to mitigate its potential effects on the District.

Officials will work through the weekend to ensure the District’s residents, businesses and infrastructure are as ready as possible for the effects of the storm, which could include heavy rain and street flooding, strong winds and power outages, and storm-surge flooding along the Potomac River and its tributaries. Forecasters are predicting 4” to 8” of rain to fall between Sunday night and Wednesday, with bursts of rain falling at a rate of 2” per hour. Sustained tropical-storm-force winds of 40-60 miles per hour with gusts up to hurricane strength (75 miles per hour or more) are possible, and duration of the storm’s peak impact may be several hours.

“Meteorologists are sounding increasingly dire warnings about the magnitude and historic nature of this combined storm, and the District is preparing in earnest,” Mayor Gray said. “We are working hard to ensure that we minimize any of this storm’s negative effects in the District.”

Preparations

The D.C. Department of Public Works (DPW) is coordinating the District government’s advance preparations. “Crucial District government agencies are already implementing their storm-response plans,” said City Administrator Allen Y. Lew. “We will be ready for this storm.”

Lew highlighted responses already underway:

·        DC Water is clearing storm drains citywide.

·        DPW will distribute sandbags tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 27) between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. at RFK Stadium, Lot 7.

·        The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is assigning staff and contractors to be ready to collect storm debris starting Monday, October 29, and DPW crews will assist.

·        DPW tow trucks will be deployed as necessary to remove vehicles blocking roadways.

·        DDOT has generators in place at major intersections. If power is disrupted, traffic signals will continue to work, and DDOT traffic control officers will be deployed to direct traffic where necessary.

For Residents

DPW is postponing Monday’s bulk garbage collections and notifying residents of the new day. Also, residents are asked to bag their leaves so they don’t collect in the storm drains and cause flooding.

Residents may go to the D.C. Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency website to get tips to help them prepare their homes and families for the storm. To receive important text messages about the latest information on weather, traffic, closings and more, sign up for ALERT DC at textalert.ema.dc.gov.

D.C. government agencies will maintain a constant presence throughout the storm on Twitter and other social-media outlets and provide crucial information as conditions develop. Please follow the Mayor (@MayorVinceGray), DPW (@dcdpw), DDOT (@ddotdc) and DC Water (@dcwater) on Twitter for information on Hurricane Sandy response, using #SandyDC as a hashtag.
