I am a long time resident at Edgewood Terrace and recently, my neighbors and I have noticed that we have some unwanted visitors who are taking over the KIDS playground that faces the corner of 5th/6th & Edgewood Street and across from building #515.  There are a group of guys and women who smoke marijuana and drink alcoholic beverage while hanging out on the playground.  They are on the playground morning, noon and night; 7 days a week.  The marijuana scent is so strong, it is smelled throughout our apartments. These people also leave food, alcohol bottles, cups and drug paraphernalia on the KIDS playground. We who have kids, do not allow them to play on the playground because of them.
 
We noticed that they are also selling drugs.  Strange people are seen walking up the walk way to meet with them and they would sell the drugs on the playground or they would sell drugs in building #515. 
 
Can you PLEASE send a patrol vehicle sometimes to interrupt the illegal activities on the playground and the surrounding areas.  Thank you so very much for you help and assistance.

I'm at Hanover Place and North Capitol Street.  There are lots of new faces on the block every night, and a thick cloud of what I presume is marijuana smoke in the air.  5 shots rang out last night and it appeared that 3 people were taken on stretchers from the B & V Market on North Capitol.  This is after 9 shots injured 2 people last Sunday.  I know your resources are stretched, but this situation is extreme.  Was the shooter apprehended in either incident?

Both cases are still open and under investigation by the Detective’s office. We are adjusting deployment to increase resources in this area. Please call 911 for suspicious activities, vehicles or persons and we ask that anyone with information on any crimes, they can call (202)727-9099 or text the tipline at 50411.

I'm at Hanover Place and North Capitol Street.  There are lots of new faces on the block every night, and a thick cloud of what I presume is marijuana smoke in the air.  5 shots rang out last night and it appeared that 3 people were taken on stretchers from the B & V Market on North Capitol.  This is after 9 shots injured 2 people last Sunday.  I know your resources are stretched, but this situation is extreme.  Was the shooter apprehended in either incident?

We do not have any suspects yet. Our intelligence section is working to see if we can develop any information about neighborhood disputes, school issues, feuds, or anything else that might have led to last night's shooting.

Arrest Made in Homicide in the 3800 Block of Minnesota Avenue, Northeast

 

(Washington, DC)-Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch have announced an arrest has been made in the homicide which occurred in the 3800 block of Minnesota Avenue, Northeast.

 

On Thursday, July 26, 2012, at approximately 10:06 pm, DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the 3800 block of Minnesota Avenue, Northeast for the report of an intoxicated male.  Upon arrival, they located an adult male unconscious and unresponsive.  DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services transported the victim to an area hospital where he was admitted.  Detectives from the Homicide Branch responded to the hospital to investigate where it was determined the adult male was suffering from an internal head wound.  On Friday, July 27, 2012, the adult male was pronounced dead. 

 

The decedent has been identified as 61-year-old Darryl Eugene Sweet Sr. of Southeast, Washington, DC.

 

The decedent’s remains were transported to The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner where an autopsy was performed.  The death was ruled a homicide by blunt force trauma to the head.

 

On Friday, October 5, 2012, 45-year-old Lloyd Bright of Northeast, DC was arrested and charged with Second Degree Murder in connection with the homicide of Darryl Eugene Sweet Sr.

I'm at Hanover Place and North Capitol Street.  There are lots of new faces on the block every night, and a thick cloud of what I presume is marijuana smoke in the air.  5 shots rang out last night and it appeared that 3 people were taken on stretchers from the B & V Market on North Capitol.  This is after 9 shots injured 2 people last Sunday.  I know your resources are stretched, but this situation is extreme.  Was the shooter apprehended in either incident?

Hello Nolan,

 

This incident originated as a verbal argument inside the location between two patrons which resulted in one being struck with a bottle. The commotion escalated and transferred outside where additional patrons began to argue and the suspect struck the victim in the facial area with a belt.  Fifth District officers arrived on the scene and placed the suspect under arrest and charged him accordingly.

Nationals Fans Encouraged to Come Early, Stay Late and Take Transit

Wednesday Playoff Game Expected to End During Evening Rush Hour

(Washington, D.C.) The Washington Nationals will host their first postseason game at 1:07 pm on Wednesday, which means fans and commuters trying to reach home can expect a crowd following the game.

 

“We encourage fans to come early, stay late, and take transit if they can,” said Terry Bellamy, Director of the District Department of Transportation. “And even if you’re not attending the game, you need a game plan to ensure you don’t get caught in the traffic.”

 

The Nationals Park parking lots and gates will open at 10:30 am (2½ hours before game time) and the team recommends fans allow extra time to reach the stadium. There will also be pre-game activities up until the first pitch. Information about transportation options and routes is available online at nationals.com/waytogo.

 

Capital Bikeshare and its operator Alta Bicycle Share will provide a corral at the N and 1st Street, SE station next to the stadium. Staff will be on hand to check in bikes from members before the games, and the bikes will be available after the games as well. There are other Bikeshare stations in close proximity as well. Fans driving to the game can avoid the worst of the congestion by delaying their trip home and patronizing local businesses. The Capital Riverfront BID lists places to dine on its website at http://www.capitolriverfront.org/neighborhood/maps/dining. Other nearby options include Barracks Row and Capitol Hill.

 

DDOT will have dozens of traffic control officers and other personnel stationed at intersections around Nationals Park, working with officers from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) to guide vehicles and pedestrians safely through the area. In addition, Road Operations Patrol (ROP) units will be on the ready to clear disabled vehicles, and engineers will monitor traffic and remotely adjust the signal timing to mitigate delays.

MPD is also advising motorists that the following streets will be closed on Wednesday at the listed times:

 

·        N Street SE, from 1st Street to S. Capitol Street will be closed at 7:00 AM

  • Half Street SE from M Street to N Street, will be closed at 7:00 AM
  • Van Street SE, from M Street to N Street, will be closed at 7:00 AM and accessible to Taxis and stadium traffic. 
  • 1st Street SE, from M Street south to Potomac Avenue will be closed at approximately 10:30 AM and accessible to stadium traffic only. 
  • Potomac Avenue SE, from S. Capitol to 1st Street will be closed at approximately 10:30 AM and accessible to stadium traffic only

 

Commuters are also encouraged to consider altering their travel plans to avoid the congested roadways around the stadium including M Street SE/SW and South Capitol Street. Alternative routes for outbound traffic include Pennsylvania Avenue, Benning Road and New York Avenue to reach points east of the Anacostia River.

 

Workers may also want to consider varying their work schedule on Wednesday, or teleworking, if their employer permits it.

 

Please note, due to the timing of the game, DDOT has decided not to restrict turn movements on M Street and at the intersection of M Street and South Capitol Street following the game, as originally planned.

Friends,

Thanks to everyone who came out to this months activities in Edgewood. Sally
Hobaugh lead another great community cleanup and barbecue. Our drum circle,
monthly meeting, yoga class, and gardening projects were a big success as well!
We even got our very own write up in the Ward Five Heartbeat! (here is the link

Death Investigation in the 1900 Block of Fenwick Street, NE

 

(Washington, DC)- Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating the death of an unidentified woman who was found in the 1900 block of Fenwick Street, NE.

 

On Wednesday, October 10, 2012, at approximately 4:56 am units from the Fifth District responded for a call to investigate the trouble at the 1900 block of Fenwick Street, NE.  Upon arrival, they located a Caucasian adult female who was unconscious and unresponsive.  DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel responded and did not find any signs consistent with life.  The victim was pronounced dead by a member of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The cause of death is pending an autopsy.

 

The decedent’s identity is unknown at this time.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the police at (202) 727-9099. Additionally, anonymous information may be submitted to the department’s TEXT TIP LINE by text messaging 50411.

My kids play tennis at Turkey Thicket on Tuesdays and Thursdays. That group is
always there, blatantly gambling, smoking weed unbothered every night. I have
never seen the police try to prevent the nightly casino. They are right by the
parking lot. It is impossible for families to get in or out of a car without
having to smell them and/or walk around them.

New Game Time – Same Game Plan: DDOT and MPD Prepared for Nationals Playoff Game

Thursday’s Game Will Begin During Evening Rush Hour

(Washington, D.C.) The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) and the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) are preparing for today’s rematch between the Washington Nationals and St. Louis Cardinals at Nationals Park. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:07 pm today, but DDOT and MPD will follow the same game plan used to get fans to and from the ballpark on Wednesday, with some minor adjustments to account for the later start time.

 

“Overall we were pleased with how traffic flowed yesterday, considering about 10,000 additional vehicles were on the roads during the evening rush hour,” said DDOT Director Terry Bellamy. “Today the schedule works more in our favor but we still anticipate another sellout crowd and our approach will be the same.”

 

The gates at Nationals Park will open at 1:30 pm today, and just like Wednesday, fans are encouraged to allow extra time to get to their seats.

Once again, Capital Bikeshare and its operator Alta Bicycle Share will provide a corral at the N and 1st Street, SE station next to the stadium. Staff will be on hand to check in bikes from members before the games, and the bikes will be available after the games as well. There are other Bikeshare stations in close proximity as well. For more information visit www.CapitalBikeshare.com. More than 100 Bikeshare members took advantage of the corral for Wednesday’s game.

 

Fans driving to the game can avoid the worst of the congestion by delaying their trip home and patronizing local businesses. The Capital Riverfront BID lists places to dine on its website at http://www.capitolriverfront.org/neighborhood/maps/dining. Other nearby options include Barracks Row and Capitol Hill.

 

DDOT will have dozens of traffic control officers and other personnel stationed at intersections around Nationals Park, working with officers from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) to guide vehicles and pedestrians safely through the area. In addition, Road Operations Patrol (ROP) units will be on the ready to clear disabled vehicles, and engineers will monitor traffic and remotely adjust the signal timing to mitigate delays.

MPD is also advising motorists that the following streets will be closed:

 

·        N Street SE, from 1st Street to S. Capitol Street

  • Half Street SE from M Street to N Street
  • Van Street SE, from M Street to N Street, accessible only to taxis and stadium traffic 
  • 1st Street SE, from M Street south to Potomac Avenue, accessible to stadium traffic only 
  • Potomac Avenue SE, from S. Capitol to 1st Street, accessible to stadium traffic only

 

Commuters are also encouraged to consider altering their travel plans to avoid the congested roadways around the stadium including M Street SE/SW and South Capitol Street. Alternative routes for outbound traffic include Pennsylvania Avenue, Benning Road and New York Avenue to reach points east of the Anacostia River.

My kids play tennis at Turkey Thicket on Tuesdays and Thursdays. That group is always there, blatantly gambling, smoking weed unbothered every night. I have never seen the police try to prevent the nightly casino. They are right by the parking lot. It is impossible for families to get in or out of a car without having to smell them and/or walk around them.
