Support Julia at the
World Ski-O Championships!
The United State Orienteering Federation recently selected a
team to represent the United States at the World Ski Orienteering
Championships in Bulgaria. Julia Bohnen, a member of Minnesota
Orienteering Club, was selected as a member of the U.S. team. This
is the first time an MNOC member will attend the world ski-O champs.
Four other women and four men were also named to the team.
Last year Julia finished the American Birkebeiner in 3 hours,
46 minutes. The "Birkie" is a 52 kilometer race which is on the
world cross country ski race circuit. In August, as a member of a
four person team with three other MNOC members, she finished first in
an adventure race that required biking, canoeing and orienteering.
Julia is a strong orienteer who runs red at local meets, and she is
the club's vice president of competition.
USOF will award each team member a small stipend based on
funds available in the Ski-O team fund, but each member is
responsible for her own expenses, which include entry fees, meals,
hotel and air fares.
Although MNOC is not yet a tax exempt organization, we can
support Julia. The club will collect contributions to defray Julia's
expenses. The money collected by the club will be turned over to
Julia with a list of those who contributed. You can also send a
check to USOF and indicate that it is for Julia's benefit. A
contribution to USOF is tax deductible, and the ski-O team fund
administrator will credit the contribution towards Julia's entry fees
and hotel costs.
Your support will really mean a lot. $10 from every club
member will pay almost all of Julia's expenses. Julia will take time
off from her job to make the trip, and her presence on the U.S. team
will make it much stronger than in past years. The races will be
held February 23 to March 3, which will fill the sports void after
the Olympics. (For results, go to the IOF web site at
http://www.orienteering.org/ and click on Ski-O 2002 World
Championships.) The Olympics of 2006, to be held in Turin, Italy,
may include ski orienteering. So let's support Julia and U.S.
orienteering!!

MNOC is planning a winter get away ! An MNOC group is going to the Georgia
Navigator Cup A-meet to be held on the Martin Luther King week-end Jan 19 /
20 2002 at Russell State park , Georgia (which should be in a very
comfortable 50 to 60 degrees F vs some number less than zero degreees F in
MN).
The Georgia Navigator Cup is a superbly run annual A-meet to be held this
year in the 2,700 acres of open hardwood and pine forest of Russell State
park about 120 miles ENE of Atlanta. Not only are there 2 days of regular
orienteering competition but there is a trail O competition (open to all) and
dinner on the Saturday, and an Extreme O event on the Monday. The details
are all at the Georgia orienteering club web site :
http://www.mindspring.com/~sam.smith/gaoc/GNC/GNCFlyer.htm
Currently airfares to Atlanta from MSP are running at the bargain price of
$201 roundtrip. So far the MNOC group consists of 2 definites (Mike Carlson,
and myself), plus possibly Julia Bohnen, and the Martineau's.
If you are interested in joining the group (and carpooling for the rental
car, etc) or have any questions then let Mike Carlson (mcarl@...) ASAP or

Julia, Ian and Mike Represents MNOC at the Possum Trot
This years Possum Trot, hosted by the Possum Trot Orienteering Club
(PTOC), was held on Dec. 2nd at Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area just
outside of the Kansas City area. Meet Director was Dick Neuberger
and course setter was Michael Shifley. The weather was a perfect
sunny day and by start time the temperature was about 45 degrees.
The course was designed with 3 loops. Loop A was 4.5 Km with half of
the participants secretly given this map first. Loop B was 6.0 Km
the other half of the participants received this map. And Loop C was
the last loop. So, particpants either ran the course A-B-C or B-A-
C. Julia was in the ABC group and Ian and Mike were in the BAC
group. When all three loops were completed the course was 16.0 Km
long, or just over 10 miles.
Ian Harding proved to be "In the Zone" for the day, his time of 2
hours, 36 minutes,12 seconds was 5th overall fastest. A great run
after coming off of a broken ankle.
Mike Carlson was a little less stellar coming in at 3 hours, 1
minute, 54 seconds for a 12th place finish.
Julia Bohnen was strong throughout and came in at 3 hours, 30
minutes, 57 seconds for 16th place. Julia was 2nd for females
behind veteran orienteer Sharon Crawford.

Greetings all,
I have a tentative plan for the MNOC Duluth and NW Wisconsin new map
fact finding tour planned for the week-end of Oct 13th and 14th. The
goal is to check out the following 2 locations for orienteering
events in the future ("A" meet in2003/4, and other meets beyond
that). This would also support growth of the club
presence/orienteering in Northern MN and NW Wisonsin.
The goal is to check out general terrain, support facilities
and "landowner" support at the following locations:
1). Telemark , nr Cable Wisconsin and surrounding areas (existing
1987 map area and beyond in Chequamecon Forest) with support
facilities for both foot O , ski O and bike O
2). Jay Cooke state Park, nr Duluth Minnesota for foot O and ski O (?)
and possibly 3). Valhalla area of Chequamecon Forest nr Washburn Wi.
(currently being mapped by Carl Sack (MNOC member at Northalnd
College in Ashland wi).
Tentative plan:
1. Carpool and drive to Hayward/ Telemark area afternoon evening of
Sat Oct 13th
2. Meet for 7;30 am breakfast and 8:30 am - 11;30 am Oct 14th
Telemark area tour on foot , bike and car
3. 12:30 to 1.00 pm Oct 14th Washburn car
4. 3:00 to 6:00 pm Oct 14th Jay Cooke State Park tour on foot and
bike
5. 6:00 pm Oct 14th Return to home
These 2- 3 locations seem to offer the most promise in terms of
terrain, landowner friendliness, existing map (but old) etc.
Telemark would seem to be a strong choice due to the excellent (but
needing update) map and possibility for foot, ski and bike O.
New resort management may be a source of financial and other support.
Jay Cooke is a MN state park (state parks typically have a well
defined standard 'MNOC" friendly set of rules). Jay Cooke is close
to Duluth and 2- 3 hrs from TC.
Let me know if you are interested or have any questions or
suggestions. Please pass on to anyone else who may be interested. I
will coordinate car pool info
Note: There is an adventure race in St. Cloud on the Saturday morning
that Mike Carlson, Jan Raven and Julia Bohnen are entering (and that
I will probably go to to support and take pictures as my ankle
allows) so the itinerary is mostly on Sunday.
Regards
Ian Harding
