Description

The mission of Loving Food Resources is to provide food and personal care items to persons living with HIV/AIDS or receiving home hospice care in Western North Carolina. LFR is a 100% volunteer food pantry that distributes an average of 45# of food to 60 - 100 clients each week with a direct cost of $7.00 to $10.00 per box depending on contents and weight.

Loving Food Resources, LFR as it’s affectionately known today, began in November 1991 when three individuals realized that people with HIV/AIDS and other terminal illnesses too often chose between buying food or the medicines keeping them alive. In two months, 18 people used LFR's help. Through December 2005, at least 895 individuals have received over a million and a half pounds of food from LFR due to the generosity of donations and grants received.

Most food is procured from Manna Food Bank in Asheville, NC. For many years WCQS has an annual fundraiser, which provides LFR an opportunity with a matching grant from Earth Fare to purchase fresh produce provided by Mountain Food Products. Many individuals, private clubs, church and civic groups make tax-deductible donations or host fundraisers with proceeds donated to LFR.

Clients from seventeen WNC counties are referred to LFR by healthcare providers, physicians or caseworkers, and hospices. Clients select the items they need and will utilize. Boxes include both canned and dry goods, meat, eggs, bread, personal care items, laundry, and dish detergent.
