Thanks very much. That is a recurrent theme that I keep hearing from
the different sites I've visited in my researching the loadmaster
role in the AF. Very challenging but very rewarding.

I took my ASVAB last week and scored a 98. In the next week or so, I
plan to visit MEPS and am hoping to secure a loadmaster AFSC.

I love that donkey photo by the way!

Here is a good discription of the Loadmaster Job. I copied part from
that other Loadmaster site.(See our Links).
Loadmasters are persons who load aircraft to within its weight and
balance specifications and fly with the load to its destination.
Depending on the aircraft, Loadmasters also do cargo airdrops, drop
paratroopers, do in-flight fueling, take care of passengers, and many
search and rescue operations. They insure that Cargo is properly tied
down and is compatable with other cargo on board. There is a multitude
of things to learn.Dont let it overwhelm you.Study hard and be
professional. The work is hard .You need a strong back and a strong
mind. Its the best job in the world. Dont settle for less than being
the best Loadmaster in the USAF. Good Luck..

I'm currently in the process of enlisting in the USAF and would like
to know a bit more about the AFSC of Aircraft Loadmaster. If any of
you could offer some first hand insight on what life as an Air Force
loadmaster would be like I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for your time.

I'll reply to your comments in the order they were written.

I appreciate the 20 years you spent, oh wise one, however I'm
currently in my 27th year in the Air Force. I've only been flying the
J for three.
I've flown E, H, H2, H3.

As for why active duty doesn't have the J yet, I reccomend you write
your congressman. Thats what I do.

I believe Pope will be seeing J's in a couple of years, that's
when the J will lose the bad reputation that has been spread mostly
from Nav's and Engineers. (The J doesn't have them.) It's still just
a Herc, and it's one to be proud of.
Just another old loadmaster sounding off and still flying.

Bill Cannon pointed out to me in a private Email that there was another airplane that preceeded the C-17, the YC-15. I had forgotten about it. It had four engines.

Incidentally, speaking of history, when I was at Pima I saw the one and only Budd RB-1 CONESTOGA, an airplane that was developed during World War II by the Budd company, which usually built trucks. It featured a drive-in rear loading ramps and doors, much like a C-123. The only reason I knew what it was is that when I was a kid, I was constantly perusing a copy of the 1945 US Army Air Forces annual that my dad had picked up at the old Dyersburg Army Air Base when it closed after the war.

I'm curious as to why you call the J a "piece of crap". Granted there
are a few software issues to work out. Of course these would have
been solved long ago if AMC actually owned any J's. The J is here to
stay. It flies higher, goes faster, and can carry more payload to
more places than any other version ever built. Not to mention it's
total NVG capabilities. Once again I see people talking bad about an
aircraft that don't fly or understand them. I've been flying J's as a
loadmaster for three years now. I'm willing to address any issues you
think make this aircraft any less capable than previous versions.

The real issue here is not the J, it's AMC. The C-130J was originally developed for the Tactical Air Command, which was responsible for the troop carrier/tactical airlift mission until Military Airlift Command grabbed it - over the protest of the one Air Force commander who had the most experience with tactical airlift - in 1975. Lockheed has designed features into the J that make it an outstanding airplane, but its assigned to a command the roots of which go back to the airlines. In short, AMC doesn't understand how to use it.

I have been on board a J-model, and as a former loadmaster who is now a professional pilot, I must say it's an impressive airplane. From the loadmaster's point of view, there aren't that many real changes and the ones I saw I would consider frivoulous - such as automatic locks that are going to start jamming once the airplane is put to work in a dirty environment - which is where C-130s most often operate. But aerodynamically, it is light years ahead of the other versions of the C-130. The first time I learned anything about the J was when I went through Simuflite with a couple of Lockheed production test pilots, both of whom were retired, one a Marine and the other USAF. They told me that with the new engines and the HUD, a low-time pilot could take off and land on a 2,500 runway without difficulty (the average C-130 AC in Vietnam had more than 2,500 hours flying time.) But even more important, it can TAKE-OFF in 2,500 feet with a 25,000 payload, climb to 35.000 feet and deliver it 1,500 miles away. That is a giant leap forward. The older versions of the Herk are 25,000 foot airplanes, but this one goes 10,000 feet higher where fuel consumption is greatly reduced.

The following was written by Dan Reider.

I just received word that PLA member Richard Vaught passed away on 24
February. He succumbed to heart problems with which he'd suffered
for the past few years.
His loadmaster career extended back to the days of C-119s.
From 1993 through last year, he, and wife Clara, were the initiators
and main organizers of the annual reunions for 2nd Aerial Port's
Loadmasters and Combat Controllers.

He will certainly be missed.

Brian "Bobo" Hunter is in the Rhode Island Guard on the Mighty Herk and I
stay in touch with him so if anyone is looking for Bobo holler my way.

Is Kevin Cottrell, Brian Quinn and Sean Billingsley still up there in the
AMOG?

I always miss the travel except to places that suck like Diego Garcia.
Jakarta and the Middle East,I always miss my friends, I miss the Per Diem

Been a member of the PLA for several, I don't
make many comments, but I enjoy reading what others
have to say.

Hello all as you can see we have started a e-mail group for the
Professional Loadmaster Association. Why? The Yahoo Groups allow us
maximum flexibility to reach all of our members. Also visitors can
upload photos, files, share stories and many more features. We
invite you to jump start our new group by posting a message or
sending in a photo to the group.

Thank You,
Rich deLucia
