WaterGate: Austin TX 2007.03.23
Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein were in town Friday for the release of their papers regarding Mark Felt, the man once known only as Deep Throat and who secretly helped them in uncovering the Watergate abuses. In October 1972 they wrote these words in The Washington Post: "FBI agents have established that the Watergate bugging incident stemmed from a massive campaign of political spying and sabotage conducted on behalf of President Nixon's re-election and directed by officials of the White House and the Committee for the Re-Election of the President." That was the beginning of the end for US Prez Richard Millhouse Nixon. They also talked about what they viewed as more contemporary abuses. Perhaps no musical act has paid a bigger price for speaking out against war than the Dixie Chicks, the biggest selling female music group of all time and the big winners at the Grammy Awards on Sunday. They have been largely blacklisted since the eve of the U.S. invasion of Iraq in March 2003. That's when the group’s lead singer - Natalie Maines - said the group was against the war and ashamed that the President Bush is from Texas. Barbara Kopple joins us to talk about her new documentary, “Shut Up & Sing”, which chronicles the period since. That's an easy question, and already answered - "none".
Government, being *nothing* more than a monopoly on the
use of force in a particular geographic area, has *no*
legitimate function. Since every power that it *takes*
reduces, equivalently, the social power of individuals,
it is anti-social in nature, and *should* be opposed by
every rational, peaceful, and honest person.

Oh, make sure that you give a complete response, which
David suggested might make it a *fair* question. And
please resolve the contradiction which you suggest, as
to *how* freedom and government can be other than
mutually exclusive.

As the piece points out, we share several *goals*
with the Greens, but they look to authoritarian,
government-based solutions. They are watermelons,
as some say, green on the outside, but red on the
inside

Of course, on one issue in particular, you lean
that way, yourself, but that's off the subject.

You *may* want to think about your opposition to
corporations, as I was once forced (by myself :-)
to do.

In fact, *anyone* should be able to declare that
an enterprise operates with limited liability, and
anyone working for, dealing with, and investing in,
could decide, for themselves, whether to do so.
But, government has arrogated that right to itself,
and dispenses it, as a form of monopoly privilege,
to corporations.

There *are* some problems with corporations, such
as grossly excessive executive compensation, overly
compliants boards of directors, etc. But, since
government organizations such as the SEC, IRS, etc.
*created* most of these problems, government will
*not* improve conditions, while a truly free market
*would*. Remember, government has *always* been a
tool of economic oppression, for enabling an elite
to live at the expense of others.

Corporations serve a very valuable purpose, though.
They enable people to pool their capital, to invest
in projects which are too big for individuals, and
which are not actively managed by the investors,
while letting them keep a lid on their financial
liability. Without limited liability corporations,
some of the things that we take for granted might
not even exist.

Rod:
You are asking more of Grier than you are willing to provide yourself.
In the first paragraph you ask "how should a government be permitted
to accomplish" its mandate. You do not answer that question yourself.
[not that it is an easy question to answer]. Further it would seem that
in your signature line you effectively eliminate the principal means by
which governments accomplish that end; "Disarm the Government"

How do YOU suggest that governments protect "human" life & property?
How do YOU suggest they accomplish that when disarmed?

A Peace With Greens?
by George Squyres

"The question has been asked recently if we ought to forge an alliance with the Greens.  They also are a third party struggling to compete with the duopoly, to borrow Mr. Nader's excellent reference, and perhaps we can both gain by pooling resources to move farther down the road. This has gone back and forth, some declaring that we have many objectives in common, others stating that an alliance with the Greens would be an unholy one.  If the question is to be resolved with any certainty rather than becoming just another topic that is divisively beaten to death, there must be a clear reason why or why not. I hope the following perspective will serve that end."

the following is a post that I just received.

Roderick T. Beaman

Please post the following from the Ron Paul campaign,
on every site
and list that you have:

You all have very good ideas. I want to include all of
you about what
we are doing.

First and foremost, the goals that we hope to
accomplish are:

1. Bringing the message that liberty can be
reestablished in
American only by respecting the rule of law, the U. S.
Constitution.
2. Saving America from bankruptcy, world war and a
continued
fascist regime by getting Ron Paul elected President.

What you can do:

1. Republicans need to get involved in the party.
Become voting
delegates at your precinct, county and state
conventions. Support Ron
Paul at all these events. Ask them to invite Ron Paul
to speak at
their state conventions! (1-800-RON-PAUL)

2. Republicans need to call the county chairs,
executive committee
and state chairmen of your individual state. Ask that
they support
and endorse Ron Paul. Tell them that it is imperative
at this time in
history that we have someone who in incorruptible and
a true
conservative because this country is going bankrupt –
financially and
morally.

3. Those of you, who are not Republicans, hold your
nose and take
the plunge as Ron Paul is running in the Republican
primary and
believe it or not, most grassroots Republicans believe
in limited
government and want someone to believe in Ron Paul is
that Republican.

4. Write letters to the editors of newspapers about
supporting Ron
Paul for President.

5. Continue to hammer talk show blogs and email
commentary
promoting Ron Paul for President. (you have done a
great job at this)
Ask them to invite Ron Paul onto their station. Tell
them to call
1-800-RON-PAUL. Promote him and the issues of liberty
and the U.S.
Constitution.

6. Ron Paul has to win Republican primaries before he
can get to
the next step – the general election, so we need you
to work in
Republican circles to get that done.

Thanks so much. You don't know how much we love you as
supporters.
If it weren't for you holding back the tide of big
government by
supporting Ron Paul in all of his endeavors, we would
have little hope
for freedom.

So, because of you, there is……….Hope for America !

I think Jefferson was pretty good as a president. His
big failing was buying the Louisiana Purchase, a
decision that bothered him, from what I've read, for
the rest of his life. Under him, we also began a
policy of Americanizing Louisiana in what may have
been an early cultural imperialism. But there were
fewer federal employees (I don't know if it includes
military) after he left office than when he began. I
don't know another preisdent who can make the same
claim. He also assiduously sought congressional input
during the Barbary incidents.

Jefferson wasn't particularly good as president, despite his fine
rhetoric in the Declaration of Independence.

And you should give at least as much to an actual LP candidate as to
Republican Ron Paul.

The Global Warming Theory and the Loss of Integrity
By Michael R. Fox Ph.D., 3/18/2007 9:56:41 PM

The practice of science has historically been driven by positing a hypothesis, making observations of the real world, then determining whether the hypothesis explains the observations.

The practice obviously needs experimental replication by independent observers, establishment of limits of the hypothesis, and peer review. As Nobel laureate Richard Feynman has stated, the failure of these tests of the hypothesis means the hypothesis is false, period.

-++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

" the hypothesis is false, period. "

Richard Feynman was quite a highly respected scientist and I hate to criticize him not knowing the context of the
statement attributed to him above, but whether HE made this statement or not, he apparently made similar ones.
The trouble is though, on the surface it's wrong!

Many if not most of the tests of hypothesis are themselves inadequate. You cannot prove or disprove a hypothesis
with one test and certainly you can't illuminate something as complex as our weather with even a dozen theories.

I could say for example that God exists and he will prevent me from dying if I drink poison. My dying from the poison
certainly wouldn't prove or disprove God's existence.

Mr. Fox is a science author but his grasp of science is questionable.

He states "Keep in mind there has yet to be an experiment done which demonstrates a relationship between man’s
activities and global warming."

What on earth is he talking about? We don't have a second Earth to experiment on or the ability to test our climate
in any way  that would overcome natural variability! The mechanisms have been proven and though that does not
prove that the climate with it's feedback loops doesn't behave differently it's really as close as the limited testing that
we can do can determine! Fox asks for impossible conditions with an impossible timeframe. It's as if he asking
whether his brakes can stop the car before the brick wall and his first test will be to not apply them.

We know that man's activities generate a tremendous amount of CO2 and that CO2 levels have drastically increased
and that the climate's records show that increased CO2 levels coincide with global warming. We also know that
glaciers are rapidly receding and that the ocean and the upper atmosphere is warming. We also know that there
are areas in the world where huge amounts of methane, an even more potent greenhouse gas, are stored and that
those areas are warming and that that warming can release the methane. We know that warming ocean waters
can also release a massive amount of CO2 stored there. We have even had lakes release CO2 and kill hundreds
of people.

At this point it really behooves the skeptic to show how man's activities might not cause a chain reaction.
If we considered the evidence equally we would be reading five hundred pages of agreement with man's
contribution to global warming for every page that tried to refute it. it most certainly should be classified as a danger
and treated as such even by rational authorities.

There is no way for anyone to know absolute  truth. It will forever be beyond us. We can know people though and
have some idea as to how dependable people's opinions are, based on the people's expertise, their diligence, their
motivations, their influences and their reputations.

Additionally we can judge for ourselves as to how much respect the scientists themselves have for rational thought
and argument.

The practice obviously needs experimental replication by independent observers, establishment of limits of the hypothesis, and peer review. As Nobel laureate Richard Feynman has stated, the failure of these tests of the hypothesis means the hypothesis is false, period.

-++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Jefferson wasn't particularly good as president, despite his fine
rhetoric in the Declaration of Independence.

And you should give at least as much to an actual LP candidate as to
Republican Ron Paul.

May I suggest, Steve Kubby.

I've already decided that I will be breaking my new rule
*this* time, so that I can vote for Ron Paul, assuming
that he wins the primary. It's quite a long shot, I'd
say, given the media blackout, and the enmity that even
his *own* party elite feel for him, but I sent him $200,
as soon as he was able to accept it.

I even plan to re-register as a Republican, the thought
of which sends shivers down my spine, so I can vote for
him in the primary.

I started beating the drum for him on the day that news
of his exploratory committee leaked, and I follow the
news about him, almost every day. Yes, some Democrats
(the ones who are *really* serious about being anti-war)
*do* like him.

Of course, I don't agree with him 100% (he is pro-life,
and pro-imaginary-lines-in-the-sand, after all), but I
believe that he is the only Republican who can win. I
think that Hillary has a lock on her nomination, given
the frequency that enemies of the Clintons end up dead.

And, of course, there is *no* way, given our first-past-
the-post electoral system, that a third party can win.

I believe that America is irreversably on the way down,
but Ron Paul may be able to keep it from imploding in
*my* lifetime. If Hillary wins, kiss it goodbye.

God, whatever you do Grier, don't stop voting. Not this year,
anyway. Not with Ron Paul running and seeming to gather more steam
with every passing day.

Maybe I'm just exposed to those who generally agree with me, so he
seems to be getting stronger than he really is, but I've read that
even some Democrats are looking at him. Is this the chance we've
been working for to breakthrough to the public and have them realize
there is an altermative; that what they're thinking, we've been
saying?

George McGovern once remarked that (Barry) Goldwater says what the
guy in the street is thinking. McGovern said it as a warning to his
fellow politicians and Democrats. The two major parties may be
marginalized by the Ron Paul insurgency.

Apathy, Fear and Ego...Obstacles to Unity

"But again, truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty you need only look into a mirror." V for Vendetta

The burning question seems to be what can we do to respond to the rapidly advancing assault on our Constitutional liberties?? Perhaps we need to take a step back and ask a more fundamental question. Why are we so dis-unified...both militia and political patriot groups alike? Surely, before there can be a battle plan there must be an army; but not an army of this group or that, scattered here and there, doing their own thing and lacking any semblance of cohesion and cooperation between them. We may agree that the nation is, at best, in a Constitutional crisis, but beyond that we can't seem to get on the same page. What is it that keeps us from sitting down at the same table and unifying our efforts?

Perhaps this is a question we hesitate to answer. To answer it honestly would then demand that we accept responsibility and do something about it. So long as we don't admit to our own shortcomings we don't have to change our behavior. It's rather like overeating. So long as we avoid looking in the mirror, we can continue our gluttonous ways. But at what expense?

If we are to prove that we honestly seek to do something to prevent the certain demise of the American Republic and are not just playing citizen soldiers and patriots, then we must face ourselves squarely in the mirror. We must then admit at least one of three things. It is our apathy, our fear and our egos that stand in the way of taking the first vital step toward Constitutional reclamation and the restoration of liberty in America.

Apathy is the easiest of these problems to cure. It just requires that we take some action of some kind...anything to get us moving. Apathy may be coupled with laziness and complacency and interestingly enough, these are the things which we most often blame as the pathology of the sheeple mentality. We see it everyday, however, within our own organizations. There always seems to be a small core group who carry the load and keep things running. The rest of us are content to lurk or occasionally post a link to someone else's opinion or the news du jour. If we never feel the urge to scream, "enough is enough!" then apathy is the problem.

"By far the most dangerous foe we have to fight is apathy - indifference from whatever cause, not from a lack of knowledge, but from carelessness, from absorption in other pursuits, from a contempt bred of self satisfaction." William Osler, Canadian Physician, 1849-1919

"Apathy can be overcome by enthusiasm, and enthusiasm can only be aroused by two things: first, an ideal, with takes the imagination by storm, and second, a definite intelligible plan for carrying that ideal into practice." Arnold J. Toynbee, 189-1975, British Historian

Then there is the fear of moving beyond our little groups, aka 'comfort zones'. There is no denying that we live in dangerous times, as the government grows bolder in ushering in the police state to pave the way for one world government. The Patriot Act and the Military Commissions Act paint us all as 'domestic terrorists' and may even deny us our right to habeas corpus. We imagine that we are safe so long as we remain in our little individual hideaways and don't make too much noise. We're only fooling ourselves, of course. It has been many years since the government took out a whole group. Since then, they bring us down quietly, one by one.

"Courage is the first of human qualities because it is the quality which guarantees all others." Sir Winston Churchill, 1874-1965, Prime Minister of England

It is an old cliche', but the only way to overcome our fears is to face them; or as someone has anonymously said, stand up to them. The risks are real: imprisonment, separation from our families, financial ruin and possibly death. We know that there is no honor left in government as a whole and that "justice for all" are no longer hallowed words, but hollow ones. We've heard it said, "I'll not become a martyr for this country." Well, by God, if we aren't willing to, our children will take our places by default or else live as slaves to the New World Order. Is that the hope we had for them when we brought them into the world? Is that how we will live up to their trust that we will leave this nation a better place than we ourselves have known? How prepared will be they be for what lies ahead if we shirk our responsibilities and just leave it to them?

"Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear." Ambrose Redmoon

The weapon is fear and we are succumbing to it. Until we "mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor" as our forefathers did and unite our voices and begin a shout echoing across this nation, we will remain on our knees.

"The bravest are surely those who have the clearest vision of what is before them, glory and danger alike, and yet notwithstanding go out to meet it." Thucydides

Lastly, we come to that which is the hardest to root out...that of pride and ego. Along with lust and greed, pride is that ugly part of fallen human nature that keeps us from the greater good, as pride is only self-seeking. Pride can be deeply entrenched in the spirit of man and not only separates him from God, but keeps him from rising to new heights as his feet are mired in the mud of his own self-satisfaction. Pride and ego blinds us to our responsibility and denies accountability. They are the greatest stumbling blocks to mutual cooperation.

Pride builds empires and is threatened by unity. A man or woman's ego covets those positions of "owner" and "founder" and rejects that which it cannot claim as its own, particularly ideas. Pride and ego holds onto that which it possesses and is not willing to share. They are the culprits in continuous bickering and a stumbling block to compromise. Unity falls victim to the battle of wills and the quest for power when pride and ego go unchecked.

We cannot move on to accomplishing the greater good until we are willing to put the nation ahead of our self-centeredness. We must learn true humility and find satisfaction in cooperation, even if that means that we find ourselves in the back seat. No one person is up to the task. It will require a concerted effort by all of us.

The time has come to get off the sidelines and from behind our computer screens and onto the street corners as patriots united in the cause. This means we must first start a dialogue amongst ourselves and put our separate agendas aside for the good of the nation. We must move past our apathy, our fears and our egos to come to the table of cooperation to make this happen. Only then will we be able to answer the burning question of "What can we do?" Until then...the nation is waiting...

"The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it." Albert Einstein

"It is the common fate of the indolent to see their rights become prey to the active. The conditions upon which God hath given liberty to man is eternal vigilance; which condition if he break, servitude is at once the consequence of his crime, and the punishment of his guilt." John Philpot Curran, 1750-1814, Irish Statesman

"No country upon earth ever had it more in its power to attain these blessings than United America. Wondrously strange, then, and much to be regretted indeed would it be, were we to neglect the means and to depart from the road which Providence has pointed us to so plainly; I cannot believe it will ever come to pass." George Washington, 1788, in a letter to Benjamin Lincoln

"...So long as the people do not care to exercise their freedom, those who wish to tyrannize will do so; for tyrants are active and ardent, and will devote themselves in the name of any number of gods, religious and otherwise, to put shackles upon sleeping men." Voltaire,
Philosophical Dictionary, 1764

I agree with what David just said (and what I said,
earlier, if you recall) - that this is discussion is
a waste of time, since neither side will convince the
other. Your line in the sand is human life, while
mine is self-ownership. No matter how abhorrent I
may find abortion to be, the difference between the
collective control of one's body and complete slavery
is only a matter of *degree*. Just as Mises showed
that there can be *no* lasting middle ground between
economic collectivism and the free market, I believe
that there can be no lasting middle ground between
authoritarian collectivism and individual freedom.

We're playing semantic word games, again, so each of
us believes that the other is dodging the question. I
do *not* believe in (other than self-) government, so
how can I ascribe *any* legitimate power (or function)
to it? You believe in the sanctity of human life, so
believe that individual rights *must* be compromised.

This is precisely why I decided to stop voting. Since
*any* government which disallows individual secession
*requires* the use of force, by *definition*, voting
implies acquiescence to that use of force, no matter
which side of the stick you end up on. I want no part
of it.
