1) If you have not doen so yet, please consider for
yourself or for your students the Chris R. Tame Memorial
Prize. You need to supply me, on or before the 1st October
2007, an essay of around 2,000 words on the subject:
"Does Britain Need a Libertarian Party?"

Whoever writes the winning essay will get £2,000 (TWO
THOUSAND POUNDS STERLING). This competition is open to
everyone in the world except officers of the Libertarian
Alliance. Just because you may not be British does not
prevent you from offering us advice!

You can find the rules of the competition here:

http://www.libertarian.co.uk/conf07/prize07.htm

2) You can also still book places at the Libertarian
Alliance and Libertarian International joint London
Conference. This will be held at the National Liberal Club
on the 27th and 28th October 2007, and will be a
glittering event. Full details here:

http://www.libertarian.co.uk/conf07/conf07brochure.htm

3) I gave a lecture last night on the Greek Philosopher
Epicurus. Here is an extended text of the lecture. You may
leave comments - and these are welcome - by clicking on
the "comments" button at the head of the lecture. Go here:

Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix...
or Did J.K. Rowling Ever Read Ayn Rand?
John Lalor
Cultural Notes No. 54

I admit it: I'm a fan. So far, I've read the first five
books of the Harry Potter series. OK, so it's not the most
ingenious writing ever, and the concepts are hardly novel,
but something that's gotten kids reading adventure stories
in such large numbers can't be all that bad.

But there's something more in these books. They bring kids
back to a different time, in a land far, far away, where
political correctness hadn't been invented, and the health
and safety industry hadn't commenced destroying all
semblance of risk, fun and excitement. Fighting, scheming
and disobedience; a child having self-belief when all
others take the easy option; the acknowledgement of good
and evil; indeed, the mere existence of people of better
and worse ability - all of these things are in serious
danger of being subverted by the egalitarian, risk-free,
moral-subjectivist agenda of the Nanny Statists....

Epicurus: Father of the Enlightenment
Sean Gabb
Philosophical Notes No. 80

Epicurus (341-270 BC) was, with Plato and Aristotle, one
of the three great philosophers of the ancient world. He
developed an integrated system of ethics and natural
philosophy that, he claimed and many accepted, showed
everyone the way to a life of the greatest happiness. The
school that he founded remained open for 798 years after
his death. While it lost place during the last 200 of
these years, his philosophy held until then a wide and
often decisive hold on the ancient mind.

The revival of Epicureanism in the 17th century coincided
with the growth of scientific rationalism and classical
liberalism. There can be no doubt these facts are
connected. It may, indeed, be argued that the first was a
leading cause of the second two, and that we are now
living in a world shaped, in every worthwhile sense, by
the ideas of Epicurus....

Sorry to trouble you all twice in one day, but I have not
done as much as I should to publicise the Libertarian
Alliance blog. This has lately taken off, thanks to the
prolific and often profound writings of David Davis.

You can see the blog here:

Free Life Commentary,

11th September 2007

Before Signing off, Some Reflections
on the Failure of Political Leadership
by Sean Gabb

I have written nothing on politics in over two months. For
reasons that I think it would be tasteless to broadcast in
advance, my home circumstances seem about to change so
profoundly that I am not sure how much time I shall have
for political writing of any kind. This may, therefore, be
my last Free Life Commentary for a while. Bearing in mind
the date, I could write about the American Bombings of
September 2001. But I really have nothing to say about
these and the consequent wars that I have not said many
times already. Besides, just about everyone else is
writing about these things; and I am vain enough to think
myself a soloist and not part of a chorus. And so I will
write about what I see as the main failure of political
leadership in this country since the forced retirement of
Margaret Thatcher in November 1990....

Free Life Commentary,
A Personal View from
The Director of the Libertarian Alliance
Issue Number 165
13th September 2007

Ten years of Being Perhaps Three Quarters Right
by Sean Gabb

The other day, I sent out an issue of Free Life Commentary that suggested
I was about to give up on political writing. If I really did suggest
that—and I do seem to have done so!—I apologise. All I meant to say was
that I was about to become very busy with other matters, and that I might
have less time than usual for political writing. Those who were led to
fear or hope that I was planning to shut up were misled.

I will continue to write and publish. Certainly, I have duties as
Director of the Libertarian Alliance that must be continued.

There may well be another half dozen issues of Free Life Commentary
between now and Christmas. There may be. Or there may not be. There will,
I promise, be the usual stream of news releases and other notices of
Libertarian Alliance events and publications.

Now, I see that Free Life Commentary is ten years old this month. I began
it back in the days when I still pretended to edit Free Life, the journal
of the Libertarian Alliance. This was supposed to be a quarterly, but
never came out more than three times a year, and very often came out less
frequently than that. I discovered the Internet in September 1993, and
gradually began to send out articles I had written for Free Life, but
that might not be published for several months. At first, these reached
only a few dozen or at most a few hundred readers. I then noticed that
they were reaching thousands of readers and were having a much larger
impact than in hard copy publication. The result was that I became less
and less attentive to bringing out issues of Free Life; and I have now
not brought out an issue for several years.

It is not true that hard copy publication has no place in fringe
politics. The considerable success of my latest book, Cultural
Revolution, Cultural War, shows that people still buy and read
conventional books. There is also The Salisbury Review that Merrie Cave
continues to publish every quarter despite a lack of funding. And Derek
Turner has just revived the old Quarterly Review with every appearance of
success. But there is no doubt that hard copy journal publication
requires much more money than the Libertarian Alliance presently has; and
our Internet outreach now embraces about a twenty thousand people
directly and unknown numbers indirectly.

Therefore, Free Life withered away, but Free Life Commentary continued.
When Chris Tame made me Director of the Libertarian Alliance just before
his death last year, I did think to end the series and begin a new series
called Director's Commentary or the like. But established brands should
not be changed without good reason, even when the name itself has lost
its original significance. And since what I write often does not
represent the opinion of the other Libertarian Alliance Officers, it did
seem to make sense to keep the distinction between the existing series
and any ex cathedra statements I might make in news releases or official
submissions. I shall need to do something when the numbering of Free Life
Commentary reaches 999. But considering the frequency of issues since
September 1997, I suspect this will not be a problem I ever need to face.

Every evening before I go to sleep, I condemn myself for idleness and the
waste of another day that will not come again. I did intend, ten years
ago, to bring out an issue of Free Life Commentary every week. I then
intended to bring one out every fortnight. Quite often, though, I do
nothing for a whole month. Sometimes, I let month after month go by with
nothing new written. Even so, I have, during the past decade, written and
published 164 issues. That amounts to one on average every three weeks or
so. Assuming an average length of 2,500 words gives a total of 410,000
words of polemical commentary. Add to this all else I have written in the
same time, and I seem to have managed at least a million words. In
consequence, I am perhaps more disorganised than idle. Many professional
journalists have written less.

I give below a full list of all issues of Free Life Commentary, together
with links. Of course, I encourage you to browse through this listing.
Also, if you wish to comment on anything I have written, however old it
may now be, I do strongly urge you to use the Comment button at the head
of each article. These give a blog-like extension to each article and
allow comments to be seen by everyone. Because of the great volume of
e-mail that I now receive every day, and because I am about to become
really busy with other things, I have decided to stop responding to most
comments that are sent privately to me.

I leave it to you to decide what is the best, or perhaps the least bad,
Free Life Commentary I have written. I think the most ludicrous is the
one I wrote in January 2001, when I welcomed Mr Bush as President on the
grounds that he would turn away from the aggressive foreign policy of Mr
Clinton. If I were less vain than I am, or if I had a duller sense of
humour, that would have come down years ago. But it remains up as a
warning to anyone who would write about the politics of a foreign country
that he seldom visits and to the culture of which he pays little
attention.

Against this lapse, and against other articles that have been shown up by
the passing of time, I mention my writings on the Conservative Party and
against the war with Iraq. These make up a large portion of the Free Life
Commentaries, and the passing of time has shown that I was largely right.
There were no weapons of mass destruction, and the war was a disaster. As
for the Conservatives, they would have done better than they have had
they put me in charge of policy in May 1997, and kept me there ever
since, and listened carefully to me throughout. They would probably now
be rejoicing in their landslide majority in May 2007, following their
much smaller victory in May 2002. But they did not do this, and it is now
too late to hope they will become the means by which the country can be
saved from the horrors of New Labour or from the reaction that may follow.

For those less interested than I am in politics, there are reflections on
ghosts, on dreaming, on bookbinding, on dieting, and on the ancient
languages. And there are several entries from the diary that I have kept
since I was a boy, and that now runs to about two million words. Aside
from endless descriptions of my doings and lamentations on my failings,
this contains a complete narrative of the Libertarian Alliance since
about 1987, and a personal history, written from the heart of the Slovak
Government, on the disintegration of Czechoslovakia. One day, I may
except these into books. Otherwise, you must wait until I am dead.

If there is any main theme to all this mass of published words it is the
collapse of conservatism in the traditional sense that we have faced in
this country since 1997. Until then, the forms of our Constitution were
largely intact, and it was possible to hope that a reaction against the
destructive changes of the previous few generations could avoid any
institutional break. Since then, these forms have been either destroyed
or co-opted into a new order of things that is incompatible with either
individual freedom or national independence. The House of Lords no longer
exists in the traditional sense. The Church has become a joke that cries
out for disestablishment. The Monarchy has made a deal with the new
ruling class, in which it will continue to exist as a figurehead for the
new order of things. Even the Bench is being steadily packed with judges
who see their function as the enforcement of political correctness and at
least one of whom used to be a Communist. The House of Commons no longer
represents the people, but is a rubber stamp body packed with placemen.
The leading businessmen are all corporatists who delight in a system that
allows them to make profits guaranteed by the State.

Perhaps this had been the case for many years before 1997. Certainly, it
was no sudden achievement of the Blair Government. But at the end of ten
years, the bonds of continuity, at least in my own mind, have been
broken. I have lost any sense of being part of a community that includes
the dead. When I look now at some state occasion, I am no longer carried
back to an earlier age of freedom and independence. I see only men in
silly hats and uniforms putting on a show for the gullible.

If we are ever to get out of the mess in which we find ourselves, we need
not another 1688 or even a 1641. We need another 1649 and 1650. We need
not another William to heal our grievance, but another Oliver. If we are
to be reconnected to the England that was, some links may need to be tied
off.

Assuming I can remain willing and able, I do not think I shall find any
lack of excuse for writing in the next tern years. We live in very
interesting times, and the Eye of History is very much on us. And, good
or bad, all that I have written and may yet write, will be useful for the
armies of historians who will one day try to tell the story of the death,
and, I can still hope, the rebirth, of England. In saying this, I make no
claims for the quality of my writing, but only for its volume and its
attempt to articulate a point of view that may be shared by many but that
is seldom found in the establishment media.

But enough of this. Below are the fruits of ten years of reasonably
diligent observation of and commentary on the world.

CONSERVATIVE REPORT ON ENVIRONMENT A "BLUEPRINT FOR GREEN FEUDALISM"

The Libertarian Alliance, the radical free market and civil liberties
policy institute, today denounces the Conservative Party report Blueprint
for a Green Economy as a "blueprint for green feudalism".

Libertarian Alliance Director, Dr Sean Gabb, says:

"The Conservatives are proposing more taxes and more regulations on the
basis of fraudulent claims about the impact of human activity on the
climate. There is no global warming. If there is, it is not our doing. If
it is our doing, government action is not the answer. But there is no
global warming. This whole set of claims is a device to rescue socialism
from the failure of its promise to deliver heaven on earth. Shame on the
Conservatives for joining in the clamour.

"And shame, above all, on the very rich men who are telling us to tighten
our belts in their attempt to 'save the planet'. Zac Goldsmith, one of
the authors of this Report, is one of the richest men in the country.
David Cameron and John Gummer are not poor. If all the economic growth of
the past century were to be rolled back, their sort would not suffer.

"If the rich want to travel, they have their private jets and
helicopters. If they want to eat fresh fruit and vegetables out of
season, they have their vast greenhouses. If they want to do without
washing machines and gas-fired central heating, they can fall back on
armies of servants and expensive personal generators. If they want
entertainment, they can have their private theatres and orchestras, or
whatever in our degraded modern culture serve in their place.

"For them, a reduction of the general wealth would be a blessing. It
would ease pressure on the roads that they would continue using, and
reduce numbers at exotic holiday resorts that would remain within their
reach.

"These people talk about making the world a better place. Perhaps they
believe what they say. The natural effect of their words, however, would
be to make the world a better place for people who have done nothing to
earn their wealth other than take the trouble to be born.

"This whole report is a blueprint for green feudalism."

The Libertarian Alliance believes:

* That taxes and government regulations are bad:

* That economic growth is good;

* That the world will be a better place when every home in India and
China has the same levels of income and consumption as North America and
Western Europe;

* That the world will be a much better place when the continued
scientific and technological improvement that freedom makes possible have
enabled us to establish colonies on the inner planets and in the asteroid
belt, and when the conquest of disease has allowed the human lifespan to
be extended to centuries;

* That Messrs Goldmsith & Co should go back to their ancestral pursuits
of whoring, drinking, gambling, hunting and being beastly to their
servants, and leave the rest of us alone.

Hello to everyone out there. Sorry I have not kept in touch, but I just
recently have been able to get into my yahoo mail. My health remains good and I
will get better. The diagnosis of a tumor deep in my brain on August 5, 2007,
was a BIG surprise. Thanks to all who have visited and called to check on me.
I continue to have problems with short-term and long-term memory, but I am
getting better. This week I made it into and out of the wheelchair on my own
three times. Wow. It took a lot out of me! Rita, my girlfriend, is taking
care of me and helping me to keep in touch with everybody. My speech is best in
the morning, but I am working on getting it to work all day. To contact me,
call 512-454-2365. I am at home with Rita at 7011 Deborah Drive, Austin, TX

use and impact of pornography, infantilise women and bring legal systems
into disrepute.

As part of the debate at Trinity College Law Society in Dublin, Ms Hyde
will criticise the British Government's new Criminal Justice and
Immigration Bill. This seeks to criminalise the possession of so-called
and vaguely defined "extreme pornography".
She will say:

"When a government says there is no evidence a new law is needed, when
there is no evidence of harm and when the purpose of the law is to tell
MPs it’s OK to impose their own personal morality on the population, we
need to be worried,"
She will add that the main proponents of current proposals use incendiary
language and unproven, anecdotal evidence to try to justify the law. This
language also denigrates law-abiding citizens who are harming no-one,
limits their freedom and stigmatises their sexuality - all despite there
being no evidence of harm to others.

Sean Gabb, Director of the Libertarian Alliance, says:

"It is no business of the authorities in a free country to police the
imagination. If these proposals become law, they will be another weapon
in the arsenal of the police state built up in this country since 1979.
We stand wholeheartedly with Deborah Hyde and everyone in Backlash to
oppose them."

The Libertarian Alliance believes:

* That what consenting adults do with each other on their own property is
their own business;
* That if these consenting adults wish to publish any of this to other
consenting adults, that also is their own business;
* That there should be no laws against the possession of any text or
image, such laws being against the historic Constitution of England and
being an excuse for an already corrupt police force to fabricate evidence;
* That the one legitimate function of the criminal justice system is to
protect life and property.

Hi All,

We should all be are grateful for the success of this project. I want to thank
everyone who has participated. It seems that we are a growing concern and have
moved into the overwhelming success catagory as DVD orders are steady and
getting larger in size. The growing number of repeat buyers is especially
encouraging. Thanks to all who are spreading the message with these
documentaries.

The largest order was 1,000 Zeitgeist (edited). I have also had two other 1,000
Ron Paul orders I was not able to get out because of such short notice. I will
not let that happen again. Once I catch up, I plan to fill the shelves in
anticipation of orders, especially the larger ones.

Recently, I purchased a third duplicator and am now able to almost double my
production. Five printers barely keep up with the duplicators. I may add two
more, soon. Does anyone have an Epson R220, R260, R300 or an R580 they would
like to donate? These machines do a wonderful job of disc printing.

It seems we are usually a week behind in production, which also means, many are
using the project as a tool to educate others. I am not complaining.

We made some nice changes to the site. The Home page is more fun and a new video
clip sets the tone of our project. Be warned, the clip is a serious wake-up
call. http://onedollardvdproject.com

Please, note the order page is simpler and the full version of Zeitgeist has
been removed. I am from the old school and believe there is a God and He sent
Jesus to wake us to that reality. Part I of Zeitgeist irritates me and others as
well therefore, I will only carry the edited version containing The 9/11 Myth
and The Men Behind The Curtain.

This is no longer a one man operation. I am a new grandfather. My daughter-n-law
is now helping me twenty hours a week. The three of us, including my four month
old granddaughter, are quite a team, putting out DVDs. What a blessing it is to
look into that child's eyes and see what should be. We must all consider what
those who follow us will face, if we fail.

There is always a surge, in orders, after I send out these notes. Please, be
patient as we are working as hard as be can between nursing and changing
diapers. ha.

As always, we are looking for more documentaries that fit the project and ideas
to maintain the success we have seen. Please, take a few minutes to review the
various pages and let me know if something needs attention. The Support page has
some good ideas for those who want to help the project.

God Bless You All.

2nd Secessionist Convention Media Stories
The convention was held Oct 3-4, 2007 in Chattanooga, TN

As you'll see, there was controversy over (mostly Southern Poverty Law
Center) allegations that convention co-convener League of the South is
racist. More info at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/League_of_the_South
http://middleburyinstitute.org also co-convened.

In truth, all secessionists risk being tarred by "unionists" with the
"bigotry" smear because *some* secessionists obviously want separatist
organizations, communities or nation states based on race, religion,
ethnicity, language, gender, etc. The desire to work in political
community with one's own kind does not necessarily mean hateful or
supremacist or colonialist beliefs - though when it does we should
protest the fact. But that doesn't mean we have to spend half our time
denouncing any secessionist who doesn't toe any unionist's politically
correct line.

To me a greater concern about the conference itself is that most of the
attendees assume seceding entities will be one or more of the current
states of the union. One of these days I'll list all the arguments for
why we should be promoting secession by smaller entities (communities,
cities, counties) which then form regional networks and confederations.
At http://secession.net.

One argument is suggested by the fact that two different gay blogs below
gave the convention relatively positive coverage. Minority groups that
want self-determination can most easily be accommodated by
community-based secession movements.

Considering that a time of great change is coming, we must get
our strategies and goals in order if we are to offer a real alternative
to the various authoritarians jockeying to take greater control of
nation states worldwide. Carol in DC

October—Sunday 28 October 2007.

You can see full details of this at:
http://www.libertarian.co.uk/conf07/conf07brochure.htm

This will be perhaps our best conference yet. Speaking there will be
Professor Bruce Benson, Leon Louew and many other luminaries of the
libertarian world. There will be a recorded message from L. Neil Smith.
You will have ample opportunity to buy some of the many books that Sean
Gabb has written!!!

And we shall announce the winner of the 2007 Chris R. Tame Prize Essay.
Somebody will be awarded £1,000. If we have not so far contacted you, we
regret to say that you have not won. However, the quality of all essays
submitted this year was very high indeed, and we will publish a selection.

There are still places available. To book your seat, use the PayPal
facility on the web page given above. Or send a cheque to the address
given on the web page. However, because time is now short, please e-mail
us to confirm your booking.

We do not wish to take cash at the door, but might be persuaded to do so
in cases of particular disorganisation.

Dear All,

There are still some places left at the London Conference of the
Libertarian Alliance and Libertarian International. I am writing,
however, to say that we are STRONGLY DISINCLINED to let anyone in who
turns up unannounced. Our numbers are pushing towards the limit placed by
the Fire Regulations. And we are now finalising the dining numbers.

If you want to book, go to this web page:

http://www.libertarian.co.uk/conf07/conf07brochure.htm

Otherwise, get in touch with me and make a definite promise of attendance.

If you have already booked, we need to know if you have any dietary
restrictions. If you are Jewish or a Moslem or a Mormon or a vegetarian,
YOU NEED TO TELL US NOW. If you don't tell us, you may find your plate
loaded with shellfish wrapped in bacon with brandy sauce (this is a
traditional English club, you know!)

Best regards,,

As a libertarian, I believe that a great deal of the suffering in this
world is due to irrationality. My blog deals with such issues as the
irrationality of laws against prostitutition, drugs, gambling, and other
victimless crimes. My video begins with the most graphic example of the
negative consequences of irrational thought—the 9/11 Terrorist
Attack. From Hitler to Stalin to Usama bin Laden, I reveal the common
theme that underlies history's greatest calamities—the refusal
to think rationally.

Dear All,

Our conference last weekend was an outstanding success. I am not sure if
we have ever had a better conference. Except for the fire alarm that sent
us to an earlier Sunday lunch than expected, everything went as planned.
I am still looking through my inbox at the messages of praise and thanks
to the Libertarian Alliance.

In the next week or so, we shall process and upload all the video footage
of the conference. Then, if you were not there, you can see for yourself
how good it all was. In the meantime - and I will get round to personal
messages - let me, on behalf of the Libertarian Alliance and the
Libertarian International, thank all our speakers and all our attendees.
And let me assure you that next year will be better still.

Best regards,

Howdy All,

Remember, November 5th is THE day we want to send Ron Paul $100. The results of
this one-day effort will not only change the status of Congressman Paul's image
but, it might ensure his nomination.

Imagine the reluctant main stream media coverage that will follow this huge
grassroots effort. Ron Paul will officially break into the mainstream and our
voices will finally be heard.

So, if you ever wanted to save the country, by helping a political candidate,
the 5th is your chance.

ALAN STANG ENDORSES RON PAUL
http://www.newswithviews.com/Stang/alan12.htm

It's not just wishful thinking. Ron Paul can become the next President.
http://www.lewrockwell.com/fisk/fisk20.html

Also, we am working on another Ron Paul DVD that will contain all of the current
clips from the home page of RonPaul2008.com.

Judge Napolitano and Congressman Paul spoke at the Future of Freedom Foundation
conference and that DVD will soon be available on our site:
http://www.onedollardvdproject.com/DVD-new/DVD_List.html

Go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8QwTKKSvR8 and watch the Judge and the
Congressman. He is so powerful, I consider Naplitano the best choice for
Vice-President.

Educating our friends and neighbors about Ron Paul and the other subjects we
cover on the one dollar dvd site, will ensure a strong base of support for
candidates who will speak the truth in the future, swear to honor their oaths of
office and who will need informed voters.

After the 5th, the revolution WILL be televised. Ron Paul... Ron Paul... Ron

SLEEP-WALKING TOWARDS SLAVERY – THE COMING SLAVERY OF THE ANGLO-SAXON PEOPLE

One of the fastest growing global businesses in the world today is the
people business – providing skilled workers to meet the labour demand
for growing economies. The rapid economic growth around the globe has
put pressure on many employers for skilled staff. Even countries such as
India, which have traditionally supplied skilled staff to overseas
businesses (especially the IT sector), are now facing skills shortages
themselves. Mature economies such as the European and Northern Asian
economies have a growing skills shortage as their population’s age, and
younger people move into non-traditional occupations.

Over recent years whenever there is a financial crisis within the US
economy has been for the Federal Reserve to inject more money into the
banking system. Japan has also followed this policy to inflate its
economy to stimulate domestic growth, but with a large current account
surplus, has not been dependent on the inflow of overseas capital –
rather has been an exporter of capital. The increase in the supply of
dollars has flooded the world with liquidity, providing the capital to
nations that were once America’s enemies to enable them to expand their
economies to where they now threaten and compete with our very economic
survival.

Meanwhile the world is experiencing one of the greatest shifts in
economic power in history. The global economic dominance that the
Anglo-Saxon nations have maintained for the last 200 years is now
rapidly disappearing. America’s wealth continues to decline as the US
dollar falls against the Euro as investors withdraw their capital before
loosing all value on their investments. The US dollar is no longer being
accepted as an international reserve currency, America is being replaced
from being the dominant global economic power with the Euro Zone
nations. The Euro will be become the only international accepted reserve
currency, allowing the Euro Zone to become the dominant global economic
power.

Over recent years Central Banks in some countries (especially the USA
and Japan) have inflated their money supply to provide domestic stimulus
to their economies. This “created” money has flowed out from the
Anglo-Saxon countries and Japan, providing the emerging economies
(especially in Asia) with the capital to finance their rapid economic
growth. Those Anglo-Saxon nations which have been operating with large
current account deficits have benefited from their trading partners
willingness to continual lending to finance their consuming habits and
lifestyle. Now they are faced with the dilemma of being unable to
attract the capital to finance its deficits and to maintain its current
level of domestic growth, as well as to service its enormous debt. It is
now resulting in the collapse of the US dollar.

The Anglo-Saxon nations have traditionally plundered the world’s
resources to maintain their extravagant standard of living. Now the
emerging economies are aggressively competing for these same resources.
Not only does this include exploiting the planet’s natural resources,
but will also include competing for many of the most talented people
with specialisied skills residing in the Anglo-Saxon nations. Those
emerging economies with the new purchasing power now want to have the
same quality of life that the Anglo-Saxon people have enjoyed. However,
the planet does not have the natural resources or the advanced
technology for the rest of the world to maintain the same extravagant
lifestyle as Americans, British, Canadians, Australians and New
Zealanders. There is growing competition for natural resources as well
as the skills by emerging economies to develop to compete with the west.

America has bought the world globalization – where capital has the
freedom to exploit natural or human resources to maximum profits. US
capital has in the past been able to move into third countries to take
advantages of cheap labour to produce manufactured goods or services to
gain profits to shareholders. With the collapse of the US dollar, some
of the vary countries that America has exploited in the past will do the
same – but with even less respect to human rights than American capital
has shown in the past.

Especially since WW2, some of the best brains and talent have been
recruited to work in the USA which has had the money to attract the
skills to help maintain the standard of living Americans now have. As
the dollar declines, America will no longer be able to compete for this
talent. The top skilled people will be recruited by those nations that
can offer the best price. Global capital is now fleeing to Europe as a
safe haven - this inflow of capital will stimulate economic growth in
Europe, and the demand for skilled labour. The EU is becoming the
economic powerhouse of the world,

It is only a matter of time before the US dollar totally collapses. Each
day is slides further and further down against the Euro. Soon it will be
totally worthless. The collapse of the dollar will be followed by the
collapse of the US economy and nation-wide poverty. Their populations
will become destitute. There will be wide-spread economic hardship and
starvation. The collapse of the US dollar will bring about economic
turmoil and political instability around the world. It will bring about
widespread hatred of the Anglo-Saxon nations, who will be blamed for the
troubles of the world.

People will become desperate to do anything to obtain money to live.
They will accept extremely low wages if just to have sufficient money to
survive. The USA will be come a fourth-world country – its people
desperate. Its skilled workers and resources will be defenseless and
ripe for plundering. Former international trading partners will set up
factories in the USA using cheap labour – those working in those
factories will be employed as slave labour. What we are about to see
unfold over the coming months is increased competition for the world’s
resources. This is just not just for oil and food – it will also be for
the talent and skills necessary to maintain a modern industrial society.
It will allow international capitalism to exploited human capital to
maintain the factories and demands for keeping an advanced society.

There will be a growing demand for skilled labour resources from the
Anglo-Saxon nations by the European and Asian economies to meet their
skills needs as their population ages. Human capital from the
Anglo-Saxon nations will be plundered at will – their new taskmasters
will not be generous with respecting employment laws as exist in our
countries today. In Europe German has had a history in WW1 & WW2 of
using slave labour on a large scale. This was also practiced by the
Japanese. There is no reason why the same policies will not be adopted
in the future.

The export and recruitment of people is now a major international
industry. Nations such as the Philippines earn more from the
repartitions of income from overseas workers than international trade –
it is their single largest export industry. Yet these nations do not
have the same level of skilled workforce that resides in the Anglo-Saxon
nations.

The reverse movement of talent and skills from North America to Europe
will see some of the greatest migrations to take place in recent
history. This migration will take place because a desperate people will
be willing to accept anything just to survive. They will be willing to
give up their freedom to provide the skills and technology to support
the EU and Asian economies to survive. There will be no respect for
individual rights and freedoms as we have today – amongst many of these
nations there is no love for the Anglo-Saxons, and their individual
rights. The new taskmaster will not have any conscience of exploiting
human capital.

Dear All,

I notice the conviction of Barry George for the murder of Jill Dando in
1999 has been reopened. Robert Henderson argued at the time that the
conviction was unsound. If the authorities had paid attention to his
forensically brilliant LA paper, the poor man might not have spent the
past six years rotting in prison. You can read Robert's paper here:

http://www.libertarian.co.uk/lapubs/legan/legan037.pdf

And here is another paper on the case by Scott Lomax:

http://www.libertarian.co.uk/lapubs/legan/legan046.pdf

Turning to other matters, I announced this prize at the Libertarian
Alliance conference nearly a month ago. But I have so far neglected to
announce it to the whole world. I have been less attentive to my duties
as LA Director than I'd like.

The £1,000 prize goes to Neil Lock. I looked through nearly a hundred
essays. I made a short list of six, and then spent several weeks
dithering over which one was best. It was a hard decision. But it's now
made and the essay has been published by the Libertarian Alliance. Go to
the front page of our website and follow the link:

http://www.libertarian.co.uk/

If you submitted an essay, please don't be disappointed. There will be
another competition next year. And the LA - subject to Nigel Meek's
editorial approval - will get round to publishing your essay.

Finally, Brian Micklethait and Antoine Clarke devoted a 45 minute podcast
to a review of my book "Cultural Revolution, Culture War". You can hear
this podcast, and read a response to it by David Robert Gibson, by going

Hi,

Thank you all for supporting the project with orders of DVD's and donations. We
are waking the Republic by encouraging our friends and neighbors to participate
in the most significant paradigm shift this Nation has needed to make since the
Revolution in the late 1700's.

While millions sleep, forces in the shadows quietly and most recently, not so
quietly, are moving our Nation into a third world status under totalitarian
control. While troops prepare to invade another country, ours has open borders,
a declining economy and a population that may not know how or why the
Constitution prohibits undeclared wars and prohibits inflation of our currency.
We must wake up those who can contribute to this latter-day revolution in
information.

One method is distributing educational videos which are easily viewed by those
who may not have hi-speed connections. Watching a DVD in the comfort of your
living room is still one of the most effective ways to learn.

Most folks know something is very wrong. We are fighting terrorists yet, our
borders are unprotected. Our dollars buy less and less. Our jobs are moving over
yonder and while the future we ponder.

Wars and rumors of wars conceal the agenda of a ruling elite who would do away
with nationhood and merge us in a European style North American Union. The
Country is bankrupt and must borrow from China to finance these undeclared wars.
The middle-class is losing ground and this generation is less prosperous than
the previous.

There is evidence that many are waking to the reality that the American Dream is
becoming a nightmare. It can be seen in the support Congressman Ron Paul is
getting from all sides. The issue is no longer left vs. right, liberal vs.
conservation or, even Republican vs. Democrat. It is right vs. wrong. It is the
rule of law vs. the rule of man.

Our leaders have strayed from their sworn oaths to defend the Constitution. We,
the people are responsible for that fact. We must hold our would-be rulers to
their oaths of office. Those who support Ron Paul seem to get it and that in
encouraging. The masses are waking. We must step up the pace and help wake even
more patriots.

The one dollar dvd project (http://www.onedollardvdproject.com) was designed to
contribute to that effort. Please, come see the new additions and changes at the
site. There are three new Ron Paul clips DVD's. Some are many hours long, others
are short and focused. The Judge Napolitano & Ron Paul message is most
impressive.

Also, note that a DVD Order Form can now be downloaded for those who prefer not
to use PayPal or enter their credit card number on-line. The order page and DVD
list page have been combined to make shopping easier.

We have noticed that the "Continue Shopping" button on the "Shopping Cart" page
does not always work. It is a PayPal issue that can be overcome by closing the
window which will take you back to the "Order" page. This is a one man operation
and I apologize to those who are inconvenienced.

As always, thank you and let me know of any improvements I might make and any
DVD's that need to be added to the site. I would like someone to put together a
compilation of veterans against the war and awol soldier testimonials from
youtube clips. I have seen some first hand accounts that need to be shared with
those who still think we are fighting terrorism in the Middle East.

Even though Alex Jones has given us permission to duplicate Endgame, I plan to
wait while he recovers his costs somewhat before I make a combo of Endgame and
TerrorStorm. It seems like the right thing to do.

			 My Contractually-Obliged
		        Lecture on the Environment
			     by Sean Gabb

At one of the places where I teach, senior members of staff are required
to work an environmental theme into every lecture course they give. Here
is the lecture I shall give next Monday morning to three hundred
undergraduates. I will not read this to the students. That is not my
practice. It should instead be seen as a summary given in advance of what
I shall say, and as a source of quotations to use against me in the
subsequent group discussions.

Our Duty to Save the Planet
Sean Gabb

According to all the newspapers and television stations and all the
politicians, we are facing a serious environmental crisis. We are told
that global temperatures are rising, and that they are rising because of
economic development, and that, unless we make radical changes to the
ways in which we live, sea levels will rise and the world in general will
become less pleasant.

I am not a scientist, and I am not competent to examine the detailed
claims about the nature and extent and causes of global warming. But I
believe these claims are all lies. I believe they are the latest attempt
by some very nasty people to stop the progress of the human race to
unlimited self-improvement.

History and Class Oppression

Until about 250 year ago, the normal situation of humanity was
stagnation. There might be ages of improvement, but these hardly ever
improved the lives of the poorest, and they were always followed by a
decline of economic activity.

This was a world in which society was shaped like a broad pyramid—a very
small ruling class enjoying fabulous wealth and status, and a great mass
or ordinary people at the bottom living in poverty. It was a world in
which more than half of all children born died before they reached the
age of five, and in which the great majority of ordinary people died in
their thirties.

The libertarian revolutions of the 17th century in England led to a
sudden increase in general wealth during the 18th century. By around
1800, it was plain that this was an improvement unlike any other before.
For the first time, larger and larger numbers of ordinary people were
enjoying cheaper and better food and clothing.

Other European governments looked on this with envy, as greater national
wealth meant greater military power. But many, both abroad and in
England, were concerned about he social and political impact of these
developments. They meant that more and more ordinary people were moving
about and improving their lives, and they were thinking for themselves,
and beginning to question political arrangements that delivered immense
differences of wealth and status.

The Reaction

The first reaction against market liberalism was purely conservative.
Churches and landowning interests put much effort into defending the old
order of things. Look, for example, at this verse from a Church of
England hymn:

The rich man in his castle,
The poor man at his gate,
He made them, high or lowly,
And ordered their estate

The meaning of this is that God had given everyone a certain position in
the world, and this position had to be accepted without complaint or
attempts at change.

Without massive government force behind it, this sort of reaction was a
failure in every place it was tried. Even there, it tended to fail. No
dungeons in this world, or threats of hellfire in the next, could stifle
the news of freedom and enrichment.

And so the next step in reaction was to disguise conservatism as
progress. Ideologies were developed that looked progressive, but the
effect of which would be to stop all further progress.

That is the significance of many kinds of socialism and particularly
Marxism. These doctrines spoke about equality and freedom and growing
wealth, but were obviously about the exact opposite. Even before the
first socialist experiments, liberals were analysing the socialist claims
and announcing that a socialist society would be a dictatorship in which
the great majority of ordinary people would be made poor again.

This was the result of actually existing socialism in the 20th century.
Countries like Russia, East Germany and Czechoslovakia had fast economic
development among their stated goals. In fact, the only really growth was
in the amount of pollution their factories produced.

The only liberty and equality and economic development that have ever
been seen have taken place in countries like England and America and
Germany and Japan— where people have mostly been left alone to look after
themselves and their families.

With the collapse of socialism at the end of the 1980s, it looked for a
moment as if all the barriers had been lifted to unlimited improvement
for the whole human race. It seemed that we could look forward to a world
in which everyone had a motor car and a refrigerator and a telephone.

Environmentalism: The Last Communist Refuge

Then the environmental movement grew big. This had been around since the
early 1960s. At first, it concentrated on things like chemical pollution
and rapid population growth and how the world would soon run out of oil
and other minerals. The problem was that its claims were always proved to
be wrong.

For example, we were told in the 1960s that population growth would soon
lead to mass starvation. In the event, living standards continued to rise
faster and faster all over the world.

Again, we were told that the oil would run out before the middle of the
1980s. In the event, more and more oil was found, and we now know that we
have enough o last for centuries to come.

Again we were told in the 1970s that industrialisation was leading to
global cooling and that there would soon be another ice age. This also
did not happen.

But, since the collapse of socialism, the environmental movement has
grown bigger and bigger, and is now arguing for regulations and taxes
that would soon stop all further economic growth—particularly in Asia,
India, Africa and South America. That is the goal of all this endless
propaganda in the media, and all the talk about carbon footprints.

Now, it may be that there really is a problem with the environment. Even
a broken clock is right twice a day. But I find it historically
significant that environmentalism has grown big at the very moment when
every other argument against human progress has been disproved.

I therefore believe that the claims of the environmentalists are lies.
They are an excuse for returning humanity to a dark age of inequality and
stagnation.

An Invitation to Debate

I am circulating this lecture a week in advance, to give you time to read
it and to consider the issues raised. I hope this will make the long
discussion after lunch even more lively than it would otherwise be.

Notes on a BBC Debate Between
Chris Bryant MP and Sean Gabb
						 by Sean Gabb

I went on the wireless yesterday morning—the 20th November—to debate
freedom of speech with a Labour Member of Parliament. Apparently, the
Oxford Union is holding a debate of its own about this matter, and has
invited both David Irving and Nick Griffin to speak. Mr Irving, for those
who do not know his name, is an historian who has at various times
doubted the nature and extent of national socialist holocaust in Germany.
Mr Griffin seems to have no particular opinion on the holocaust, but is
leader of the main British white nationalist party. I am not sure if the
two men have ever met. I do not know what they think about each other.
But they have enemies in common, and these tend to place the two men into
the same "fascist" category.

Chris Bryant is the Labour Member of Parliament for Rhondda. He believes
that the Oxford Union should withdraw its invitation from two such
allegedly wicked men. I was called on by the BBC to put the case against
him.

I think the idea was that Mr Bryant should attack freedom of speech and I
should defend it. But Mr Bryant was too clever to allow the debate to run
in this course. He insisted that Messrs Irving and Griffin should have
the right to speak their minds in places like Hyde Park, but that the
Oxford Union should not pollute itself with their company. On the face of
things, then, he was not arguing for censorship—no more than I might be
if I advised you not to invite the Seventh Day Adventists into your
house. Of course, his argument was only on the face of things. We live in
a country where the old boundaries between state and voluntary activity
have been so blurred by subsidy and regulation and deals behind the
curtain, that advice is fast becoming the same as instruction. And Mr
Bryant would not really defend the right of these two men to speak in
Hyde Park. Any meeting they called there would be banned under the Public
Order Act 1986. If the meeting were allowed to go ahead, all the speeches
would be filmed by the police, and the speakers would face criminal
charges under the various terrorism and racial hatred laws brought in
since 1997. I do not suppose Mr Bryant would hurry forward to criticise
any of this.

But he was making a clever point. To answer him would require more time
than was available. So, having heard him out, I decided to go on the
attack. I thanked him for his "defence" for freedom of speech, then
denounced him for criticising men who were not his moral inferiors. Mr
Bryant, I told the listeners, had voted for identity cards, for ninety
day imprisonment without trial or charge, and for a war with Iraq that
had so far killed 650,000 people. He had no right to call anyone a fascist.

It took thirty seconds and was very easily done. I reduced the man to
spluttering rage. He spent the rest of the debate trying to defend his
voting record, while insisting that some of his best friends had been
murdered by Generals Franco and Pinochet. My answer to this one was:
"Then you should know better". That really upset him, and gave the
presenter an excuse to deliver a good kicking of her own.

I recorded the debate and have put in on the Multimedia Page of the
Libertarian Alliance Website. You can find it here:

http://www.libertarian.co.uk/multimedia/2007-11-20-bryant-sig.mp3

But what makes this debate worth noting is not that I was rather witty or
cruel. It is notable so far as it shows how easy it has become to reveal
the moral bankruptcy of our ruling class.

Mr Bryant is a typical member of this class. At Oxford, he was a member
of the Conservative Association. He next took holy orders in the Church
of England, becoming first a curate and then a youth chaplain. After
this, he joined the Labour Party and got a job at the BBC. In 2001, he
was sent into Parliament for the pocket borough of Rhondda—a place where
a Labour candidate would be elected even if it were a dead cat. His most
public achievement since then has been to put up semi-nude pictures of
himself on a website to assist his search for male company.

I am a few years older than Mr Bryant, and I attended not Oxford but York
University. Even so, I know his sort. He belongs to a class and
generation of people who combine endless moral superiority with
bossiness. All through the 1980s and 1990s, they recited their mantra of
contempt for anyone who was not one of them. When they came into their
own, they said, they would make England into a kinder, gentler country.
Their order would be more tolerant, more inclusive, more open and more
accountable. Once they had dropped their commitment to socialist
economics, they even promised it would be no less economically efficient.

Because their intentions were so pure, no moral failing or evidence of
hypocrisy could be held against them. Look at Mr Bryant's search for male
company. When the newspapers showed us a man in ill-preserved middle age
posing like a model from an underwear catalogue, his friends put round
the word that he was the victim of an "anti-gay" witch hunt. When it was
said that, regardless of sexual taste, he should have behaved with more
dignity, we were reminded that the 1950s were over and we now lived in
"Cool Britannia". Attacks on his support, and that of his class, for the
European Union were thrown back as accusations of "xenophobia" and
"extremist tendencies". Rising evidence of corruption and administrative
incompetence were brushed aside.

But there comes a point when the truth is both undeniable and hurtful.
After ten years of domination by these people, we have now reached that
point. It is useful to rub noses in the daily scandal. At the moment, Mr
Bryant and his class are presiding over the negligent loss of 25 million
names and identification data. Tomorrow, it will be something else. But
there is always some more or less credible excuse to get them out of
permanent trouble. The real stick to use against them is three bloody
wars and a police state at home. They promised us neither of these
things. But that is what they have delivered.

I wish they had been more like the people they always said they were. But
one advantage of their not having been so is their plain embarrassment.
We do not live in the world that they promised us, and perhaps that they
did vaguely want. We live in a world where they are looking and sounding
and behaving just like their parodic notion of the old ruling class.

I called Mr Bryant a fascist. He took vast offence at the word. I may yet
receive a letter from his solicitor. But after ten years of rule by him
and his class, what other political term fits him better?

If a woman has a right to control her body, why shouldn't she be
able to rent its use? Prostitution is no more ignoble than digging a
ditch, fixing a toilet, patching a roof, or operating on a brain tumor.
It is a service that millions of customers value highly, and they should
have the right to purchase it legally.

The most obvious rational argument against prostitution is that it
increases the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, which is
certainly true. But you could say the same of all unprotected sexual
intercourse. Why ban paid sex but legalize free sex? It doesn't
make sense to have this double standard.

Some suggest the decriminalization, rather than legalization of
prostitution. Regularly test prostitutes to insure that they don't
carry a disease. That is a valid point of view. But why not require
all adults to be tested regularly to insure they don't have a
disease? Wouldn't that be just as logical? It makes more sense to
me to legalize all consensual adult sexual activity.

If prostitution were legalized, many women who are victimized by pimps
and even by police would be less likely to be exploited. There would be
less murder and rape of prostitutes. The criminal justice system would
save billions of dollars that are wasted on a futile attempt to stop
illicit sex.

Laws against Prostitution are part of what I call "The Ultimate
Evil" in this world--Irrational Thought. My VIDEO delves into the
most graphic example of Irrationality—the 9/11 Terrorist Attack. My
BLOG discusses applying Reason to other issues such as the Legalization
of Victimless Crimes (Prostitution, Drugs, Gambling, etc.) and reforming
Criminal Justice.

Dear All,

1. I have just uploaded a video file of the "Libertarian World Conference

the clouds had gathered that darkened his final years. He is certainly at
his best here! The video also shows Hubert and Rita Jongen, Tom Grey, and

"SCRAP ALL DRINK DRIVING LAWS", SAYS FREE MARKET AND CIVIL LIBERTIES
THINK TANK

The Libertarian Alliance, the radical free market and civil liberties
think tank and pressure group, today calls on the British Government to
repeal all laws against drinking and driving. Drivers should be free to
drink as much alcohol as they like before and while driving. The Police
should be allowed to intervene only if a driver appears from his actions
to be a danger to other road users, or if he causes an accident.

Dr Sean Gabb, Director of the Libertarian Alliance, comments:

"The current law on drinking and driving is a prior restraint law. It can
only be enforced by indiscriminate stops and searches. Most of the
drivers stopped are not driving erratically and do not test positive.
This is a breach of the Common Law prohibition of searches and seizures,
except by judicial warrant and on evidence of some specific criminal
behaviour.

"Moreover, every officer assigned to looking for drivers over the limit
is one officer fewer to catch real criminals. This is specially the case
at Christmas, which has lately become carnival a time for burglars and
muggers. There are fewer officers around to deter them, and fewer to go
looking for them after the event.

"Much of the propaganda against drinking and driving has nothing to do
with reducing injuries to life and property, and everything to do with
making it harder to enjoy a drink in good company.

"If we want to reduce the number of deaths on the roads, drinking and
driving should not in itself be a crime. It should be possible for a
person to drink a bottle of whisky, get into a car and drive away - and
the authorities should have no power to stop this.

"Punishment should only come if a driver is so erratic that he is plainly
dangerous - or if an accident is caused. But it should then in this
latter case be very severe punishment.

"In general, we believe in real punishments for real crimes. Unless a
real crime can be shown, we believe in telling the police to mind their
own business."
