Description

Salvete Omnes!

Welcome to the home of the Nova Roman Legio II Britannica. The Second Legion is dedicated to studying and recreating the Late Roman period (mid 4th to the early 5th century) and the Sub-Roman British and Frankish Merovingian era (mid 5th to late 6th century) for public demonstrations, education and living history displays.

The Second Legion during this period was stationed at Richborough in Kent, known as Rutupiae, along the Saxon Shore, under the command of the Comes litoris Saxonici per Britanniam (Count of the Saxon Shore of Britain) and of the Comes Britanniarum (Count of the Britains) as a Legiones Comitatenses, or Legion of the Field Army, able to at a moments notice, strike at any location in Britain.

Originally, the Secunda was under the command of the Dux Britanniarum (Duke of Britain), but sometime after 390 CE, it was drafted into the British comital army, under the Comes Britanniarum. After the Romans left Britain, the Secunda was drafted into the Gallic command under the Magister Peditum, subordinate to the Gallic Magister Equitum.

It can only be assumed that with the collapse of the West, that the Secunda would have gone with it, though there is some evidence that the old Roman legions, at least in the areas of the Franks, might have continued on, under the command of their germanic Kings. In fact, Procopius in the early 6th century reported that the former Rhine-army, which was part of the Gallic command, was still in operation and that the legions kept on using the same standard and insignia as their Roman forefathers.

The Legion is still in the formation process, though we are aiming at sometime this Autumn to begin holding public displays and weekly gatherings. Eventually we will be adding in a cavalry unit Equites Honoriani (Taifali) seniors.

Di vos incolumes custodiant,

M. Artorius Sub. Silvanus
Circitor Legio secunda Augusta Antonina Britannica

Non. Mai. MMDCCLXI a.u.c.
