Florida Soil & Water Boards favor alternative water supply
Earlier this year, the Volusia Soil & Water Conservation District
(VSWCD) Board of Supervisors voted unanimously in favor of a
resolution that supports the construction of sea water desalinization
facilities in Volusia County.
For years, as Volusia and other counties experience rapid growth,
there is more and more strain on the groundwater supply to satisfy the
needs of the community. At the present rate, coastal and inland growth
demands are expected to exceed the water producing capacity of
Florida's groundwater supply. When that happens, the groundwater, as
well as lakes, rivers and wetlands may be harmed by saltwater
intrusion as coastal and underground saltwater seeps in to replenish
what has been drawn out.
The VSWCD, which has the responsibility to protect the water resources
in Volusia County under chapter 582 Florida Statute adopted the
resolution which favors an alternative water supply, specifically the
desalinization of sea water, to meet the population growth demands and
take the strain off of the Floridan Aquifer.
The resolution was brought before the Association of Florida
Conservation Districts (AFCD) Board of Directors at the AFCD Annual
Meeting held July 29-31. The AFCD Board voted unanimously to support
the resolution at the State level. The Board of Directors agreed that
an alternative water supply such as outlined in the resolution should
be considered.
