Humanitarian Law in Times of Armed Conflict
Dealing with non-state groups involved in armed conflicts who challenge
international humanitarian law, examples from Afghanistan.
Free - RSVP Required
http://swissnexsanfrancisco.org/Ourwork/events/ontrackforthefuture

International human rights and international humanitarian law both
work to protect individuals from abuse. While human rights apply at
any and all times, however, international humanitarian law applies
only during armed conflicts. To discuss this divide, and to explore
what happens when armed, non-state groups involved in conflicts
challenge international law treaties, UC Berkeley law professor
Kirk Boyd introduces the concepts of international human rights
and international humanitarian law and explains how, in times of
armed conflict, both apply in complementary ways. Boyd is the
founder of the 2048 Project, an effort to draft an international
framework for enforceable human rights.

To illustrate the challenge presented by non-state actors, Annyssa
Bellal and Gilles Giacca from the Geneva Academy of International
Humanitarian Law and Human Rights (ADH), analyze the applicability
of and issues related to humanitarian law in the Afghanistan conflict.
They describe the Rule of Law in Armed Conflict (RULAC) project,
a publicly accessible website that serves as an independent and apolitical
source of information on conflicts around the world and
their status with regard to international law.

Sleep is essential—try just to go without it for a while. But few
understand what sleep really is and how it works at a physiological
level. To understand what happens when we sleep and why it is so
crucial, swissnex San Francisco invites Swiss sleep scientist
Mehdi Tafti to present the state of sleep research today.

Looking at sleep through the lens of history and philosophy,
Willis Regier, Director of the University of Illinois Press,
discusses how individual differences in sleep habits may modify
the way we see fundamental questions. According to Regier,
philosophy has a longstanding quarrel with sleep and vice versa.
Case in point: philosopher E. M. Cioran, an insomniac who's
lack of z's may have dramatically influenced his vision of
the world—and animosity—for the philosophical establishment.

Th June 17 19 6:30-9:30pm Francophile Science SIG Free Event
Disney Research Zurich: Not Your Father's Mickey Mouse
Disney computer scientists working at the ETH Zurich are creating
the entertainment technologies of tomorrow, from hyper-realistic
facial modeling to video retargeting and 3-D animation.
Free - RSVP Required
http://www.swissnexsanfrancisco.org/Ourwork/events/disneyresearchzurich

The future of entertainment is here. Well, it's in Zurich, Switzerland, anyway.

Everyone knows The Walt Disney Company's famous mouse, Mickey.
Most also know Disney-Pixar characters like Nemo, Mr. Incredible, and
Wall-E. But perhaps Disney's most fascinating players are the ones
working behind the scenes on the entertainment technologies of tomorro
—scientists like those at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in
Zurich (ETH Zurich), where Disney established a research laboratory
18 months ago called Disney Research Zurich, inaugurated at the end of April,
2010.

In honor of the unique partnership, swissnex San Francisco and the
Greater Zurich Area welcome two of the main researchers involved.
Markus Gross, Disney Research Zurich's director and head of the
computer graphics laboratory at ETH Zurich, explains the novel
relationship between Disney and ETH as well as some of the results
already coming out of the collaboration. For example, the video
retargeting algorithm developed in the lab that scales video for smaller
screens (an iPad, say) by keeping important parts of the image in
proportion while distorting less meaningful views.

Bob Sumner, Disney Research Zurich's associate director and head of
the animation and interactive graphics research group, presents the lab's
work on computer-assisted techniques for artists working in traditional,
hand-drawn animation. He also describes new techniques for modeling
human faces down to pore level for believable, hyper-realistic visages,
the holy grail of special effects.

'Google Prediction API: Machine Learning as a Service on the Cloud'
by Max Lin, Google Research
Using machine learning tools to analyze big data
is no longer a question of when, but rather how soon. Analyzing
big data, however, is challenging: large resources need to be
provisioned, algorithms need to be scaled, and predictive
models need to be integrated with existing software.
The Google Prediction API now adds Google's machine learning
solutions to developers' toolkits through a simple, three-step
process. In this talk we will introduce the advantages of
machine learning on the cloud, present strategies of training
classifiers on terabytes of data, and discuss how the Google
Prediction API alleviates the restrictions of resource
provisioning, scalability, and integration in big data analysis.

Sa-Su 14-15 7:30pm Francophile Theatre SIG Free Show
Free Shakespeare in the Park 2010 presents:
"Two Gentlemen of Verona"
Best friends Valentine and Proteus are two gentlemen of Verona, and youthful
love is in the air. Proteus falls for Valentine's glamorous new girlfriend,
Silvia
and dumps the faithful Julia. To win back her man, she must (like all good
Shakespearean heroines) dress up as a boy. With three outrageous outlaws, a
misbehaving dog, and fun 60's tunes in the mix, Shakespeare's Two Gentlemen
of Verona is a zany comic caper that's sure to delight the whole family.

Free Shakespeare in the Park began in 1983, with its debut production
of The Tempest in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. It is now one of
the major free Shakespeare programs in the nation. Produced every
year in San Francisco, Pleasanton, and Cupertino
from July through September, Free Shakespeare in the Park provides
an opportunity for everyone to see high quality, professional theater
free of of charge.

Sa-Su 21-22 7:30pm Francophile Theatre SIG Free Show
Free Shakespeare in the Park 2010 presents:

Creative Déliaison: Literature, Philosophy, Psychoanalysis
by
Evelyne Grossman, Prof. Modern & Contemporary French Literature,
Université Paris Diderot - Paris 7

Many 20th century writers and philosophers have explored th
painful modern experience of the destruction of "déliaison"
between the psychic, linguistic, cultural, social, and political.
Grossman uses the term "déliaison" in the sense of the negative
processes which dissociate thought, opening it to other logical
systems of rationality and creation.
