Sa June 28 1-3:30pm Francophile Bicycle SIG Free Event
Bicycle Safety Town Hall
Join us for this special town hall meeting to discuss
ways to reduce the large number of bicycle
injuries and fatalities that are steadily rising each year.
- WILL KEMPTON, Director of CalTrans
- CARL GUARDINO, President and CEO, Silicon Valley Leadership
Group---Moderator

How can bicyclists and motorists safely share the road? Over the
past 10 years, nearly 200 Bay Area bicyclists have been killed
and more than 25,000 injured, according to the California Highway
Patrol. CHP statistics also show that during that time, Santa
Clara County had the highest number of fatalities and injuries
compared to the nine other Bay Area counties. Bicycling advocates
say that one solution is to raise the awareness of motorists that
bicyclists are out there and enforce existing laws toward drivers
involved in fatal collisions with bicyclists.
In association with CalTrain, the City of San Jose, Guadalupe
River Park and Gardens, Caltrans, MTC, VTA, Silicon Valley

Tu Oct 14 4pm Francophile Culture SIG Free Lecture
Jean-Michel Espitallier, French poet
The French poet will talk about his work, his work processes, and
how his work relates to that of other contemporary French poets.

Espitallier was born in 1957; he played drums in various rock bands
while he was a student at Aix. In his writing he favors sampling and
cut-up techniques, re-mixing other people's words in with his own--
for example, words by the author of a 1902 manual on oil refining
(Gasoil, 2000). In Théorème d'Espitallier (2003), he recycles
and mixes in pieces of an arithmetic textbook.

He has energetically helped other poets via the review Java, and as
the compiler of a wide-ranging anthology of contemporary French
poetry, Pièces détachées (2000). He has become quite a widely
recognized and lively spokesman for current poetry in France.

Tu Dec 16 6:30-9pm Francophile Science SIG Free Event
The Swiss Experiment An innovative environmental project that
teams scientists with citizens to monitor climate change in the Swiss
Alps.

730 Montgomery Street, San Francisco, CA 94111

Free but RSVP mandatory
http://www.swissnexsanfrancisco.org/activities/events/swissexperiment

One of the primary limitations in environmental research today is
the lack of spatial and temporal environmental observations. The
high cost of conventional sensing instruments makes it difficult for
scientists to deploy a large number of sensing units.

The Swiss Experiment (SwissEx) was therefore initiated to foster
the creation of new wireless communication technologies, simpler
and less expensive sensors and, above all, the possibility to
capture,
transmit, save and automatically process huge amounts of data in
real-time. The goal of the SwissEx is to enhance our understanding
of what environmental change means for society from local to
regional scales and identify key mechanisms involved in natural
hazards.

Specific and unique strengths of the project are a truly
interdisciplinary
collaboration, the willingness to understand environmental processes
as a whole, the massive amount of in situ observations, the use of
new
generation wireless sensing devices (SensorScope), the integration
of heterogeneous data and the involvement of the community in
an innovative way.

Program:
6:30pm doors open
7:00pm swiss experiment overview by Marc Parlange
presentation and demonstration of SensorScope by Mounir Krichane and
Guillermo Barrenetxea
8:00pm networking
9:00pm doors close

The Swiss Experiment is a multidisciplinary consortium of Swiss
research institutions (ETHZ, EPFL, WSl/SLF, MICS and EAWAG)
and is supported by CCES, SNF and Microsoft Research.
