I spoke to the Bel Air Patrol guard who was around yesterday and he said they
caught 4 robbers at a house on S. Lorraine yesterday morning before his shift
started. (Yay!) I don't know the details or if that's the same story..

The BAP guard also mentioned that robberies have been way up in our area.

As anyone who drives or walks northern Van Ness Avenue can tell you, there's
been a spate of very visible, large tagging going on from Elmwood north to
Melrose (not coincidentally also part of the area where a young man was shot to
death several months ago).

HBT and most of the landlords and residents have been on case with paintouts and
repairs and we're working with the remaining property owners to respond and
respond quickly to the tags. We're also communicating with our Olympic Senior
Lead Officer Joe Pelayo who sent over the following update which contains
valuable information - PLEASE READ:
___________________________________________________________
Good Morning Charlie,

The Olympic gang unit is actively pursuing this. There was an arrest made of a
gang member link to that crime late Thursday. We are also working closely with
the Hollywood gang unit that patrol the area north of Melrose. Although patience
is running thin amongst the community, I still believe that if we all work
together we eliminate the presence of graffiti in our area.

Thank you for your input. Please advise your neighbors to report any suspicious
activity immediately to the police.

Off. Joseph Pelayo

____________________________________________________

If you should happen to be out at night and see suspicious activity PLEASE call
the police immediately at 911, the gang units are actively engaged in pursuing
this.

If you see tagging after the fact, PLEASE call 311 so it can be dealt with
promptly, shortcircuiting the tit for tat mess that will result if it's not.

Hey Charlie,

FYI, two of the St Andrews Boys gang were arrested this morning. They were

current.
His family is heartbroken. Please keep your eyes open for Frankie.

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to write a quick post to let everyone know that my car was broken into
yesterday at around 2:45pm. It was parked on the street between Plymouth and
Rosewood. There were two witnesses that saw a young man about 19 or 20 walk by,
break the window, grab my gps and run off to a car that "looked like a mustang."
They weren't able to get a license plate, but one of the witnesses said that
they had seen this young man walking around the block beforehand casing out all
of the cars to see what people had left on the seats. One of the witness also
saw someone else that same day jump over a fence on our block. We called the
police to file a report and the refused to come out even thought my gps had my
home address in it. I then had to wait 4 1/2 hours to file a report when I was
told, (after calling 6 times and was told to call back) we will call you when we
get a chance. We are all okay, and no one was injured, but I wanted to let
everyone know as this was quite brazen.

Hi Gina,
Maybe the police did not come out because they have higher priorities
for their limited resources like going after prostitution and drug offenses,
which potentially can bring in revenue for their department as well through
asset confiscation.
The incentives for investigating property theft or even mugging are
little in comparison for LAPD.

Thank you very much for letting people know about such events in the
neighborhood and I am sorry it happened to you. I have been there as well.

Best Regards.

This is a great idea if any of us can attend tomorrow night (Weds., 4/29) ?--

If disaster strikes, we will literally be on our own for up to 2 weeks. This is

Last night, we had a babysitter watching the kids. We got a call while we were
at dinner that someone was knocking on my side kitchen door (clearly not the
main entry door) for about 1-2 minutes. Babysitter knew not to answer the door,
but my wife and I both found it really odd to have someone knocking at 9:15pm on
a Saturday.

I ended driving back to check out the house and the street, and didn't see
anything suspicious.

We'll called ADT to check out the area, and of course I never saw a patrol car
drive to check our street. They are less and and less effective the longer I
continue to pay. Somewhat Frustrating to be honest.

Anyone else get an odd knocker last night?

Dear LVNA neighbors,
Our neighborhood association is watching this carefully and individuals are
participating in communicating with the City Council. Please read the details
below to become better informed and potentially take action this week.

This is an extremely important issue and if the proposed budget cut proceeds,
neighborhood councils will be virtually crippled.

If you agree that the funding for our Neighborhood Council should be at
the level proposed by the Mayor in his budget (a 10% reduction,
consistent with other city departments) and not slashed by 78% as
suggested by selected members of the Budget & Finance Committee of the
City Council who want to silence the Neighborhood Councils, hit REPLY

-------------
NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL FUNDING CUTS:

The big news for the Greater Wilshire Neighborhood Council - and NCs
across the City - this week is the proposal to severely cut Neighborhood
Council funding for the coming year.

The Budget & Finance Committee will be recommending to the City Council
that the NC funding program be reduced to a total of $1M for next year -
which means each NC would receive roughly $11,200 instead of the $45,000
that we have been allocated by the Mayor in his budget, a 10% cut from
the $50,000 we've traditionally been granted.

That level of funding would mean our expenditures next year would be
limited to little more than keeping our organization running...there
would be almost no money to fund the community projects - such as
improvements to Robert Burns Park and the new sensory garden at the
Frances Blend School - that we've been proud to support in recent years.

The Budget and Finance Committee will convene on Tuesday, May 12, 2009
to finalize its complete recommendations to send forward to the City
Council.? The full City Council will then begin holding special meetings
to consider the Committee's budget recommendations on Monday, May 18,
2009.?

This is blatant attempt by certain members of the City Council to
silence the Neighborhood Councils.?

If you wish to express your opposition to these last minute cuts, send
an e mail to our Council Member, Tom LaBonge <
labonge@... >. You can also attend and make a public
comment at the Budget & Finance Committee (Tuesday @ 1 PM at City Hall)
or the City Council (Tuesday @ 10 AM).

Weirdest thing happened Saturday night/Sunday morning at approx 1:30 am.
Someone (an approx early 20s man) jumped out of a 1991/92 black Acura Integra
(there were 2-3 other young men (?) in the car) ran halfway up my front walk and
threw a glass Orange Crush soda bottle which had been filled with ketchup
striking my front door. The broken glass and ketchup aside, the force of the
bottle actually cracked the center panel on the door... you'd be surprised the
damage a soda bottle and condiment mix can do.

I'm completely flummoxed as to why anyone would do this (weirdo offshoot off the
recent gang activity? Wrong address? Somebody not like the landscaping?) but
want to mention it to everyone in the neighborhood for awareness... keep your
eyes out for suspicious activity. (I only have many of the details about the
perps because my neighbor across the street was in his driveway and saw the
whole thing.)

East of Plymouth - Joe Pelayo, 31762@..., and phone 213-793-0709
West of Plymouth it's Wilshire Division, SLO is Dave Cordova, email

Additionally, we maintain a direct link to the two divisions who cover our

We need your help

The Larchmont Village Neighborhood Association (LVNA) needs to expand the number
of Block Captains asap. Do you love this neighborhood and want to help preserve
the special nature of our homes and shops? But are you busy and can’t commit
to a large project? Being a Block Captain is an easy way to participate.

WHAT DOES THE BLOCK CAPTAIN DO?
We need Block Captains to distribute flyers to their neighbors three times a
year for the two meetings and for our summer party. You are also the point
person for any important neighborhood information.
If you have time you can also create a phone tree, start a neighborhood watch or
participate on the LVNA board.

HOW TO VOLUNTEER?
Please send an email with your block and street to Lynda Keeler,
Lynda@... and I will get you more information.

WHERE DO WE NEED BLOCK CAPTAINS?
Every block could use an additional or new Captain!
So if you want a way to participate let me know and I hope to see you and all of
our neighbors at the May 20th event.

Per Nikki Ezrahi:

Why do we slurry seal street that are in good condition?
Slurry Seal's are applied to street's that are in relatively good condition so
that they last longer. A slurry sealed street will last over 10 years longer
than ones that are not sealed.

Why was there a lack of notice for the work?
Notice is given three days prior to the work being done. There are suppose to be
signs as well as fliers that are placed on doors and cars. I did contact Street
Services and asked that they look in to the notice, or lack there of, with the
supervisors.

Tire marks from drivers that have driven through the seal when wet have left
marks.
I personally saw the evidence of what your neighbor was referring to on my way
home that evening. Again, I have reported Windsor Ave. to Street Services, I'm
not sure how they will address the issue but they are aware. They assured me
that they would not removed the barricades prior to the seal being dried and
that on some occasions people remove the barricades, drive through he seal and
place them back.

Hi,
Our car was broken into Friday early morning. The drivers side window shattered
and a quick ransack. My sons iPod was stolen while my 100 pound guard dog was
fast asleep! This happened in front of our home on Gower and Rosewood. Just a
heads up there still out there...

Be Safe, Georgea
