Hey LV Neighbor's,
We would appreciate your help in locating a digital camera that went
missing Halloween night around a house that we are staying at on
Beechwood Blvd. If you or any of your children came across a digital
camera near 533 N. Beechwood Blvd., please call or e-mail us at the
contact information below. There are digital photos of our one year old
boy, Jordan, who was dressed up as Elvis in a blue sequined outfit.

Hope all of you had a great Halloween. Jordan thoroughly enjoyed
meeting all of you on Beechwood Blvd. last night. Please check with
your children though regarding the camera. This was Jordan's first
Halloween so the photos are very dear to us.

Thanks for your help.

Hi all,

I hope you all had a good Thanksgiving.  We would like you all to be aware of
another robbery in our
neighborhood.  At approximately 10:00am on Wed. Nov 26th, someone
entered our back gate and broke in our master bedroom window.  They
ransacked our house and stole a camcorder and laptop computer
and even went so far as to empty out our kids piggy banks.  The police
think I scared them off when I came home because there were items
stacked up waiting to be taken.  We were very impressed by how quickly
a helicopter and police arrived.  Unfortunately no one was caught.

Please be extra safe during this holiday season!

Julie this really terrible news and unfortunately not isolated at this
point.

I walk at night for fitness and have felt uncomfortable lately and
noticed suspicious people lately. To be clear, I have not witnessed any
crimes in progress however individuals that appear to be "looking
around."

One evening I was outside speaking with my neighbor, who happens to be a
LAPD officer and we noticed a young tall male with a backpack walking
several times around the block... this was around midnight! He
suggested I carry a flashlight and pepper spray when I walk at night, it
sounded a bit extreme at the time, however with the recent rash of
incidents, I am beginning to consider it.

I have been thinking about a way to make our neighborhood safer and have
brainstormed with several residents and even thought about a way to set
up a patrol service as a possible for profit service or a volunteer
"fitness" neighborhood watch or a volunteer bike patrol... I have not
been able to come up with anything tangible and will leave it our block
captains, private patrol and LAPD to handle it? Any ideas?

Does anyone know how we can get neighborhood watch signs for the LVNA
area or if we can get custom signs made for LVNA and approved to post
around the area? Maybe LVNA patrol or neighborhood watch signs for the
front yards. any ideas?

Our neighbor to the south, on Van Ness, Frank Badami, notes: "We have a Sign
problem right here on the 500 Block of South Van Ness Avenue. The following is
related to this problem.  Your attendance and support is needed."

I am urging you to attend the Wednesday, Dec. 3, Town Hall meeting to support
Councilman Tom LaBonge's efforts to prevent more Billboards and Lighted
advertisements from going up in and around our community.

The following is a copy of John Welborne's important message detailing this
situation.

Attend: and Support Tom in his efforts to Stop our neighborhood from looking
like "Times Square".

DATE:       DECEMBER 3RD, 2008

TIME:        WEDNESDAY EVENING – 7:00 PM

WHERE:    WILSHIRE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

  300 S. Western Avenue

       Los Angeles, California 90020

Southwest corner of 3rd & Western

Ave.

PARKING:  In the Lot AT 3RD & OXFORD

(Be sure not to park behind cars and

block others)

Greater Wilshire Neighborhood Association Stakeholders, Larchmont VIllage
Neighborhood Assn and others:

Councilmember Tom LaBonge's staff has asked neighborhood associations to
distribute a flier to neighbors about a "Town Hall" meeting that Councilmember
LaBonge has organized for this coming Wednesday, December 3. Field Deputy Nikki
Ezhari wrote that this will be a chance to meet the per
sonnel of the new Olympic Division of the LAPD and to "discuss possible capital
improvements" to the Wilshire Center / Koreatown area.

The Council District 4 flier can be found on the Windsor Square Association web
site:

http://www.windsorsquare.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/town-hall.pdf

As you probably know, Councilmember LaBonge is the elected representative for
much of the Greater Wilshire neighborhood (and much of the northern part of
Wilshire Center (AKA "Koreatown").

It turns out (according to CD4 staff) that discussing "possible capital
improvements" is to discuss, and get feedback about, community reaction to
LIFTING -- for much of the Wilshire Center area between St. Andrews Place and
beyond Vermont Avenue -- the EXISTING BAN ON NEW BILLBOARDS. This would allow
the giant, lighted signs that are causing so much commotion in passing vehicles
and living rooms and bedrooms throughout other parts of Los Angeles (as well as
large building-covering "super graphic" advertisements) to shine bright in OUR
windows. For more information, see:

http://outside.in/Koreatown_Los_Angeles_CA/tags/billboards

http://www.laweekly.com/2008-04-24/news/billboards-gone-wild/2

http://articles.latimes.com/2008/apr/18/local/me-billboard18

Councilmember LaBonge is to be commended for seeking community feedback on this
important issue. Although the district boundary separating his (4th) and
Councilmember Wesson's (10th) districts is the centerline of Sixth Street . . .
the bright lights and visual impacts will not respect that imaginary boundary.
All the residents and drivers and walkers
to the north, east, west, and south of any new BILLBOARD DISTRICT (technically
called a Supplemental Sign District) will be impacted by the new billboards and
super-signs.

One informed Angeleno, when told of this situation, opined that the Greater
Wilshire Neighborhood Council board of directors and other Wilshire-area leaders
should be alerted, going on the say:

"I am sure that the meeting topic is of vital interest. It is to discuss a
proposed Electronic Billboard District for all of Koreatown. We will all be
impacted. As City Hall knows, the Koreatown residential community is a silent
one. Meetings on Koreatown land use issues are attended only by developers. The
Koreatown NC is similarly home only to business interests, mostly nightclub
owners. This is why it falls to us, the residential community on the western
border of Koreatown, to speak up."

Well, Wednesday's meeting is the time to speak up!

Wednesday, December 3, 2008
7:00 pm
Wilshire Presbyterian Church
300 South Western Avenue (at Third Street)

Parking: Please park in the lot at 3rd and Oxford

If you believe that it is inappropriate for one elected official to permanently
change the look of much of what is generally regarded as the "main street" of
Los Angeles -- Wilshire Boulevard -- just because that Councilmember is
temporarily holding office in the district that temporarily includes this part
of Wilshire Center (the elected officials and the district boundaries changing
every 10-12 years), then SPEAK UP NOW.

If you believe that anyone (you
, other residents, visitors) walking or driving EAST of Saint Andrews Place --
on Sixth Street, Wilshire Boulevard, or Olympic Bouleveard -- has RIGHTS . . .
vested interests . . . in what this part of OUR community looks like, SPEAK UP
NOW.

If you believe the many historic buildings existing in Wilshire Center deserve
to be VIEWED -- rather than wrapped in vinyl advertisements or covered with
bright, changing signs -- SPEAK UP NOW.

Please try to attend the meeting on December 3d. (I have a conflict.) It IS
important that many residents of Greater Wilshire show up to support
Councilmember LaBonge's effort to get community feedback.

Once the billboard ban for this area is lifted -- the genie will be out of the
lamp FOREVER (and the bright LED bulbs will be with us and all future
generations FOREVER). What sort of Los Angeles do YOU want for our future?

Please speak out next Wednesday evening.

And, I hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving!

-- John

Subject: Update to CD 4 Neighbors Concerning December 3 "Town Hall" Meeting

Dear Neighbors:

Councilmember Tom LaBonge's staff last week asked neighborhood associations to
distribute a flier to neighbors about a "Town Hall" meeting that Councilmember
LaBonge has organized for this coming Wednesday, December 3. The staff member
wrote that this will be a chance to meet the personnel of the new Olympic
Division of the LAPD and to "discuss possible capital improvements" to the
Wilshire Center / Koreatown area.
?
The flier can be found on the Windsor Square Association web site:
?
http://www.windsorsquare.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/town-hall.pdf
?
As you probably know, Councilmember LaBonge is the elected representative for
much of the Greater Wilshire neighborhood (and much of the northern part of
Wilshire Center (AKA "Koreatown").
?
It turns out (according to an e-mail received today from CD4 staff) that
discussing "possible capital improvements" is NOT to discuss, and get feedback
about, community reaction to lifting -- for much of the Wilshire Center area
between St. Andrews Place and beyond Vermont Avenue -- the existing ban on new
billboards. However, "enforcement of illegal billboards is also on the agenda.
(There is a specific program called PACE - Pro-Active Code Enforcement - which
will be discussed.)"
?
The CD 4 staff wishes us to emphasize that Councilmember LaBonge did NOT intend
this meeting to be one to discuss Councilmember Wesson's proposal to create a
sign district in Koreatown, although Councilmember LaBonge "is very concerned
about the proposal." The office adds that "Councilmember LaBonge does not
support the creation of ANY new sign districts in Los Angeles."??
?
We've been asked to clarify this because CD4 staff does not want to disappoint
folks who attend the December 3d meeting when the Koreatown billboard proposal
is NOT a part of the agenda. On that subject, CD 4 staff advises:
?
"Anyone who is concerned about the creation of new billboard sign districts,
(which, again, Tom does NOT support)," should please write or email:
?
Gail Goldberg, Director of Planning
City Hall Mail Stop 395
200 North Spring Street
Los Angeles, CA 90012-2601
?
gail.goldberg@...
?
We hope this clarifies matters . . . and that you are able to attend this
important community meeting.
?
Sincerely,
?
John H. Welborne
Vice President for Planning and Land Use
Windsor Square Association
?

Hi everyone,

A sweet young dog followed my husband and dog home just after 10 pm on
New Year's Eve. My husband first noticed him in the 500 block of North
Lucerne. The dog is a short-haired male (possibly an Akita mix), tan
with big ears and some white markings on chest and paws. He seems to
be in good health and is friendly, so I'm sure he belongs to someone.
Unfortunately he was not wearing a collar or tag, and he is not
microchipped.

If you hear anything about someone looking for a lost dog or see any
signs or think of anything else that would help us get this pup back
home, please let us know. My cell number is (323) 445-9659.

Thanks so much, and Happy New Year.

Yesterday (1/19) a suspected home-invasion burglar was apprehended in the 300
block of
North Norton. The Olympic Division PD responded to a call about a suspicious
man sitting in
a car for hours. When they checked him out, they found that the car was stolen
in Dec. in
Rampart Division, the man had a stolen wallet, stolen ID, stolen credit cards on
him...AND
they found burglary tools and property from at least five different people in
the trunk of the
car. I heard there was a break in on Plymouth on Sunday (?) - perhaps this is
the guy!
HOORAY for Det. Chong and his colleagues - they were great to deal with - very
approachable and informative.

I just received this e-mail, and thought I should post it on the board. I have
been trying
to get in touch with our block captain, so our block can receive e-mails similar
to these,
but no luck so far. Do we have anything like this connected with our area? I
live on
Plymouth, just north of Beverly. Thank You!

This is a security alert
The following e mail was sent to us regarding a home invasion that occurred
earlier today.
Please take note an use caution when someone is knocking at your door. If
someone is
knocking, you ar not suspecting anyone or you did not request any service calls,
immediately call our car to respond as well as LAPD.

Thanks
Jerry & Terry, SSA Security
Dear Neighbors --
The following is a preliminary crime report. Captain Matt Blake, who commands
our LAPD
Olympic Division, called immediately to inform us, reassure us, and seek our
calm
assistance, as follows:

1. Around 9 AM this morning, Friday, a home invasion robbery occurred in the 200
south
block of Norton Street. The details come from the female homeowner, who reported
the
crime to the LAPD.

2. The suspects are two male Hispanics who were wearing orange jumpsuits of the
kind
you might see on roadside litter collection crews. They knocked on the front
door and
conducted themselves as if they were government employees seeking a signature on
paperwork. They then drew a gun, entered the home, and tied up and injured the
homeowner. They did not use their weapon. They departed with a large sum of
cash.

3. The LAPD is on the scene in full force. They are and will aggressively pursue
all leads,
including DNA, canvassing, witness statements. A veteran detective with a great
success
record is on the case.

4. If you have seen the suspects or similarly dressed/acting individuals, please
call the
Olympic Division with your details. Front desk: (213) 382-9102; Detectives Desk:
(213)
382-9380.

Many thanks for your calm cooperation.

Hello everyone - Just got another SSA report about an incident that took place
today.

According to SSA this incident happened this afternoon in the 300 block of South
McCadden Pl., at 4:30 pm. The victim, via e-mail, advises the following:

This afternoon at approximately 4:15 there was an attempted home invasion at our
residence, 3 __ South McCadden Place.
I was the only person home, although I am usually at work at this hour but had
taken the
day off.
2 males, early 20's 1 Black, 1 Hispanic or light-skinned
Black, drove into our driveway, rang our front door bell several times
(which I did not answer) and they then moved their car from the
driveway to park across the street, a bit 'catty corner'. Watching out the
window, I saw
them leave the car, put on black hooded sweatshirts,
( I was in full alarm mode by now!) and they proceeded to walk down our
driveway to the back of our property. I then heard attempts to get into
the back doors/windows, and immediately called 911. Simultaneously,
--and while scared out of my wits!!--they continued their jimmying and
then I could tell they had gotten onto a single story roof from which
they could access several rooms upstairs. I fled our home, and called
back 911. While watching from behind the neighbor's wall, I soon
watched 2 black females, late teens/early 20's also dressed in jeans
and hooded colored sweatshirts, get into the car (I had no idea they
where they came from! (maybe 'spotters' ??), then out immediately and
(saunter!!) down the street, not wanting to attract attention.

Just at this time the police helicopter came overhead, and several
police cars were attempting to cordon off the area streets-- but one of
the hooded males streaked down the side of our property, jumped into
the car ( a golden-taupe new model Nissan, maybe Altima? no plates,
but Galpin Ford new paper plates on the front, broken passenger side
mirror)......and screeched/burned rubber down the street towards 4th
Street. The 2 females rounded the corner and then male #2 raced down
4th Street (apparently he had escaped the property by jumping the back
fence and headed south on Las Palmas to get onto 4th street--and (I
assume) they all--the 2 girls and male #2-- were picked up on 4th
heading toward Highland and undoubtedly eluded the police in the area.

I must say that, all things considered, the police responded quite
promptly, professionally, and on the ready line. Once they investigated
the property, they went through each room on all 3 floors and cleared
the house to my great comfort.

I write full details to let you know that there were several factors
that I believe contributed to the 'selection' of our home":

#1 My housekeeper had just left the house--a bit early-- and headed to the
bus stop (might have they been watching for her exit??).

#2 I suspect that they drove into the driveway to view the back portion of our
driveway, to determine if any cars were there and, hence, people were in
the house. Not sure what they would have done had I answered the
doorbell though !?!

#3 The property directly behind us is posted For Lease and it is apparent that
it is presently unoccupied, hence, the additional opportunity for no
'surveillance'
to the back of our house.

I thank G-d and my lucky stars that I did not crumble in the midst of
this, and managed to keep my wits. I write with the hope that this note
may alert my neighbors near and far that there are bonafide "no
goodniks" lurking out there--even in broad daylight!-- and I encourage
everybody not to drop their guard nor become too casual about the
security of their property.

Kind regards,

Rachel

This incident, had the victim remained in the residence, would certainly have
had the
potential of going from a Residential Burglary to a "Home Invasion Robbery", or
even
worse.

In the last couple of weeks there have at least 2 home invasion type
burglary attempts in Windsor Square/Hancock Park. While I never
counsel people panicking, now is certainly the time for everyone to
make sure they're being both smart and careful.

Make sure your locks are used, make sure your neighbors know when
you're going away, make sure you have the necessary emergency numbers
handy (use the Links section to your left if you need to look 'em up)
and don't be afraid to notify LAPD if your radar makes you think
something is amiss on your street.

All,
An email was posted, I believe on another list I'm on, with a helpful
suggestion from someone from the City Attorney's office: get an email/phone
tree gathered of your entire block, or as many folks as you can gather.
When someone "suspicious" knocks on your door, immediately notify the
neighbors. Last night I was babysitting for a friend and a young girl
knocked on the door around 8:45 and stated, "Can I talk to you?" I did not
open the door and sent her away. Turns out she knocked on several doors on
their block last night, with varying stories of needing money for school,
selling newspapers, etc., and exhibited some odd behavior.

So, when you see something odd, you can alert your neighbors! Hate to be
overly suspicious or unfriendly, but these days... -- Tara, North Gower

Greetings,

I'm searching for a local dog walker who can come to my office on Larchmont
Blvd. in the afternoon and take Lenny, our 2 year old puggle, for a half hour to
an hour walk. I'm open to a neighborhood teen or young adult who'd like to do
this or referrals to professional services.

Thanks in advance,
Lynda
