Greetings all,
I wanted to share with the group a rental that I have available in
the neighborhood.
I'd love to find someone to lease the house through a neighborhood
friend or perhaps you are starting a remodel and need a place for 9
months to a year.
The house is on the corner of Bronson and Elmwood and has 2 bedrooms,
1 1/2 baths and an office or nursery off one of the bedrooms. There
are hardwood floors in the living room and dining room and neutral
carpets in the bedrooms. There is lots of closets and storage and the house
feels
very light and bright.
Street parking only. Water is paid along with gardening service. I'm
open to someone with pets.
The lease is $2700 a month and the house is available Jan. 1st.
You can reach me at lkeeler@... or 323.459.4086. Photos and
more info is on Craigslist.
Thanks,
Lynda Keeler
This is letter that I wrote to City Council on their pending decision to raise
our sewer fees.

Subject: Proposed Increase in Sewer Service Charge
My councilman is Tom LaBonge. I don’t know his position on this rate
increase but I suspect that he, like most of you are for it.
Why do I say this?
Because all of you are a product of a generation of politicians who thrived
in an atmosphere of tax and spend politics.
During the past forty years I have watched politics in California at the
State County and City level evolve around the mantras of tax and spend while
delivering less.
I am here to tell you that as a voter, as a ratepayer and as a constituent
I have been dismayed and I am opposed to this rate increases.
I am opposed to your politics as usual.
I am urging that you collectively make a decision to reverse this inertia
and adopt a precedent for delivering more and asking for less.
I am urging you to take your heed from the State government and examine
your programs for bureaucracies that we no longer need and for services that are
better performed by private enterprises, look for bureaucracies that put
unnecessary burdens on your average City residents.
Does Building and Safety need to be as expansive as it has been? Is a
Commission for Women still a necessity after all the politics for women that
we’ve seen during the past forty years? How many other commissions are there
that need to be eliminated?
Do any of the services that we currently pay for, needed? Are they cost
effective? Is it all necessary that we have all those redundant environmental
programs? Could we do without them and is it cost effective for those services
to be done by government? Could those functions better be left to people outside
government?

I just had to respond to this email.
While I also received the Sewer Service Charge, I am in favor of it. For you
information, the City of Los Angeles was sued by the State of California (the
Attorney General's office) for having an outdated infrastructure for sewage.
The City constantly reported major sewer spills over the last five years, but
due to their fear of constituents and the fear of raising fees, they never did
so. As a result, they failed to do a good job upgrading the sewer systems
throughout the city, especially in the poorer neighborhoods. I'm not sure that
you saw that the City prided itself on having one of the lowest sewage fees in
the nation-that was in the material they sent every month (except of course this
month.) So I applaud the City for raising the fees, and I hope that soon some
brave politicians will also raise taxes for schools, roads, parks, trash,
libraries and all the other types of infrastructures that make a community
livable. Thanks LVNA90004@yahoogroups.com writes:

January 2005.....
The Board held elections last week and here are the new officers:
Charlie Hutchinson- President
Vince Cox- Vice-President
Winnie Mosa- Treasurer
Judy Horning- Secretary
Congratulations to all!
Also, be on the look out for criminals in our neighborhood using
the "lost pet" scam to get into your back yard. The Suspects act as
a pair with one knocking on your door asking to look in your back
yard for a lost pet. Meanwhile, the other suspect attempts to enter
house while resident is looking in back yard with other suspect.
Please be aware that this type of activity has been reported in the
Windsor Square area.
Lastly,
There is a meeting worth trying to attend. We're one of the few areas
of the city still without a neighborhood council, which weakens our
position in dealing with city government, particularly on planning
and zoning issues (the councils were specifically envisioned as
having power in these areas). Meeting is on this Thursday January 20,
2005, at John Burroughs Middle School in the Multipurpose Room from
6:30 pm to 9:30 pm to begin planning for the GWNC election. Details
are below.......
In July, 2004, the Board of Neighborhood Commissioners (BONC) invited
us to explain why we had not held elections in the eight months since
we had become certified. All sides attended a BONC meeting on August
3, 2004 and explained their actions/inaction regarding failure of the
Interim Board to attain a quorum at a meeting to elect a committee to
begin planning our official neighborhood council elections. After
hearing from all sides, BONC asked the Department of Neighborhood
Empowerment (DONE) to try and mediate differences and get elections
started and report back at its September 28th meeting.
On September 14, DONE held an open community meeting to take the
pulse of the neighborhood. 105 people attended and participated in a
discussion of what had transpired over the years, GWNCs
certification, the current status of GWNC and what GWNC should do
next. At the end of the meeting, survey forms were passed out and
collected to measure the opinion of attendees as a representative of
our neighborhood council. An overwhelming 72% of the 105 survey
forms returned asked that the City arrange for an independent third
party to help GWNC organize and hold the initial election of its
board of directors. Subsequently, DONE staff reported these results
to BONC. The Commissioners reacted favorably to the Community
Meeting and the survey.
At the September 28th meeting BONC unanimously voted to have DONE
staff prepare draft policy recommendations for BONC to consider,
regarding the procedure of how DONE will intervene as a third party
when the interim board of any neighborhood council cannot make up a
quorum in order to carry out its mandate to hold elections. DONE
staff presented its draft recommendations at the October 19th BONC
meeting. BONC approved the policy DONE had created. Since then,
over the holidays, DONE has been working on how to approach the
election process in our case. They now appear ready to go, as
described in their invitation, below.
GWNC already has City approved Bylaws. GWNC also has an agreed upon
set of election procedures. DONE staff and the City Attorney,
working with various neighborhood council representatives over the
last year, have developed Election procedures and guidelines. DONE
has decided to hold a series of open community meetings, this month
and next, beginning with a meeting at John Burroughs Middle School,
on Thursday evening, January 20, 2005 to begin working on our
election procedures, tweaking them if necessary and helping us move
forward toward the open election of our first Board of Directors. We
now need all of our neighbors to set aside differences and
participate to make sure our elections are a success.
Again, the Department of Neighborhood Empowerment (DONE) is holding
another Community Meeting (described below) one week from this
Thursday, on January 20, 2005, at John Burroughs Middle School in the
Multipurpose Room from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm to begin planning for the
GWNC election. PLEASE MAKE PLANS TO ATTEND! TELL YOUR NEIGHBORS!
Once again, the City, through DONE, needs to hear your voice as they
try to help our neighborhood move to the next step forward toward
full and fair elections in our neighborhood council, Greater Wilshire
Neighborhood Council. This is a very important meeting for as many
stakeholders as possible to attend.
If you have any questions, please email Deanna or Mark Lewis. The
official email invitation to GWNC stakeholders is below along with
their contact information. Or feel free to contact me if you prefer
and I will try to obtain an answer for you. READ THE MESSAGE BELOW!
IMPORTANT NOTE: IF YOU WOULD LIKE TRANSLATION PROVIDED YOU MUST
CONTACT DONE AT (866) LA HELPS OR (323) 789-2810, NO LATER THAN
FRIDAY, JANUARY 14, 2005.
John Gresham
Interim Co-Chair
Greater Wilshire Neighborhood Council
I wanted to inform you of an attempted break-in in the neighborhood
yesterday.
About 3:30PM Tuesday:
a male
white/light skinned
about 5"10" tall
thin build
short dark hair
unshaven
wearing shorts & sleeveless top
was on (or pretending to be on) a cell phone
was wearing some sort of bag worn across the front of his body
I say ATTEMPTED break-in, due to 2 neighbors being vigilant watching
someone they knew not to belong in the neighborhood. They approached
the guy while he was attempting to force his way into our neighbors
side door. They asked him what he was doing and he pretended to be
speaking to someone in the back yard. While telling him they knew no
one was home, they started to approach him and told him to get out of
there. He then ran into the backyard. We immediately called both LAPD
main # and the Hollywood Division # directly. Within 15 minutes 2
black & whites showed up, but the suspect had jumped a very tall fence
and ran off and exited through a yard on Windsor.
Oddly enough when the guy was trying to enter the home, there were a
couple guys on the block distributing flyers/door hangers.
Coincidence? Who knows, just be aware and make mental notes of
suspicious behavior in the neighborhood. Due to two women doing just
that, a break-in was averted.
IF YOU SEE UNUSUAL ACTIVITY:
Write down all pertinent information (height, weight, hair color,
build, clothing), anything unusual, car license #, etc.
Call LAPD when you see any suspicious activity. Better to be safe than
sorry.
IF POSSIBLE, TRY TO CALL YOUR LAPD STATION DIRECTLY, (EITHER THE
HOLLYWOOD OR WILSHIRE DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU LIVE
Most of Larchmont is under the Hollywood station, which covers the
streets from the East side of Gower to Wilton. The area from the West
side of Gower to Arden is covered by the Wilshire station.

In response to crimes reported in our neighborhood in Nov/Dec., the
Hollywood station took action.
LAPD sent out a unit that specializes in plain clothes and unmarked
cars, to cruise Larchmont Village area. In the course of looking out
for us, the LAPD was able to arrest two parolees. One of the guys
confessed to several of the robberies in our area. Both of these men
were working under the guise of being homeless/trash can
collectors/transients.
When they were arrested, one of the men had burglary tools on him and
both were in possession of shopping carts. The LAPD informed me that
one of the M.O of these types is to root through the trash bins in the
back of the house then if the opportunity arises, they attempt to
break in the house.
Both men are in jail and are expected to be there for quite a while.

Neighbors,
This is just a fore-warning, that this afternoon around 3:30 when I
came home there was a black man mid 20's early 30's thin build, white
longsleve shirt & tie with dark pants loitering by my house. He watched
me pull into my garage. Then when it got dark he rang my doorbell. I did
not answer it. I watched him walk away .He was hanging out on Rosewood
between Gower & Beachwood. He was here for hours I called the police. He
headed down Rosewood (east) towards Beachwood & Plymouth about a half
hour ago. I just did't get a good feeling about him. Don't know if the
police patroled the neighborhood yet.
I think this same person might have rung my doorbell
at 6:30pm last night as well - on Beachwood b/t
Beverly & Rosewood. I just opened the peep hole and
told him I wasn't interested. I couldn't really tell
what he was saying/selling. His speech wasn't very
clear.....

Some sad news. John, the owner of the Larchmont wine shop, says his
partner Geoffrey Senior (Geoff was the big guy that wore the Hawaiian
shirts) died yesterday.
John says Geoffrey suffered a heart attack in the back of the
shop Monday. He underwent a triple bypass Tuesday, but complications
of some sort killed him yesterday.
Jeffrey was patient, encouraging and cheerful with every
customer. He was never a wine snob, even with those who were.
Our thoughts are with his family at this time.......
So where does Georgea live for those of us near Beachwood and Rosewood. And
weren't we thinking about hiring a security service to patrol the neighborhood?
What ever happened to that? Thanks Marilyn 523 N. Beachwood Dr.
Also, did anyone attend the Neighborhood Council meeting yesterday. It would be
great to get a report. ML
I realized my post (in answer to Marilyn's last week) never showed up.
I'm resending it:
Marilyn,
Lindsay and I had discussed setting up some type of security for Beachwood but
between
work, holidays and the charter school, we didn't get it together. (Sorry! :-)
There are
several of us on Beachwood who would like to have our block made a "no
solicitation"
block, and/or get a neighborhood watch going.
We'd like to know if there are neighbors on other streets who are also
interested. We could
have a meeting with just Beachwood people (where we have a lot of support for
those
ideas) or we could have a meeting with the block captains from all of Larchmont
if others
are interested too.

Hello Everyone,
We live on Arden Blvd., and experienced some roof and skylight rain damage
during the last deluge.
Does anyone know of good contractors and repairman who service our area?
We'll need a new skylight, roof and wall repair just for a start.
So much for older homes and repair!
Thanks for any input.
All the Best,
Barbara Hiser
I wouldn't mind finding out the contractor information as well. Marilyn Levin

Also, info on great nanny. Marina Garcia Alvarez was our nanny when David was
six months-6 years. He is now 16. Since that time she has only worked for a
few other people, and I am sure has great references. I know she worked for two
people, half time each for many years after she left our home. Her number is
323-666-6199. Her answering machine was in Spanish last time I called, but she
speaks English and you can leave a messge in English. Marilyn
Nextel Corp is proposing to add 12 screened panel antennas on the
top of the 324 N. Larchmont Blvd building. Those directly effected
are in the 300 block of North Gower. The board met last night to
discuss our position. We are recommending that the Homeowners in
the area attend the Feb. 15th hearing at 10 am. If you cannot
attend, please write a letter. We do not feel that Nextel has
adequetly disclosed the details of this addition and it's impact on
the surrounding residential area. We are opposing their request for
a variance until they further clarify their request. Please send
all communications to show your opinion to:
Office of Zoning Administration
200 Spring St, 7th floor
LA, CA 90012
Case No. ZA 2004-6678 (CU)
Applicant: Nextel Communication
If you'd like to attend the address is the same. The meeting will
be held in Room 1020 on feb. 15th at 10 am.
Regards,
LVNA Board
If possible, providing a fax # would be helpful as I doubt that any letter
that isn't hand delivered will be received in time for the Feb. 15th meeting.

The hearing was held this week, and the hearing office agreed to
pend the file for 30 days in order for Nextel to fully explain it's
proposal to those residents that are closest to the building.
Apparently, there was confusion in what it is they are proposing to
erect on the top of the Cerell Building and how tall it will be.
The LVNA is attempting to find a meeting space for those interested
in Nextel's explaination. We are tenatively scheduled for a March
8th meeting. If anyone can suggest/volunteer a space for March 8th,
it would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
LVNA Board
How about the Cerell building.

After conferring with Councilmember Labonge's office we have
scheduled a meeting for Tuesday, March 8th at 7:00p.m.
Young-Gi at Labonge's office has secured the meeting site at the
Hollywood Field Office at 6501 Fountain Ave. in the community Room
known as the Blue Room.
There will be parking on the streets as well as behind the
building.
LVNA Board
If anyone attended the Nextel Meeting last night regarding the
proposed addition to the Cerell building on Larchmont Blvd, it would
be great if they would give their impressions of the meeting.
thanks
