Hey neighbors. I noticed - on the Larchmont Charter School website - that we
can hook up our Pavillions, Ralphs and Target store cards so that LCS gets a cut
of the cash we spend. Cool, huh? Jim and I spend a lot at those places and
would love to see the school benefit.
<http://www.larchmontcharter.org/fundraising.html>

(Just so I don't step on any toes... the rewards can go to up to 3
places/schools if you choose.)

Can someone associated with LCS elaborate on this for us? Is it worth doing?
Does the school really get a significant amount if we take a few minutes to sign
up our cards?

Thanks!

Yes - It's worth doing no matter what school you choose. Pretty much all local
schools participate and while the direct dollar earnings aren't gigantic (a
couple thousand dollars a year - still they need every dollar), it costs YOU
nothing, the businesses need to donate the money (why not to a local school of
your choosing), and more importantly they check participation in these programs
when issuing grants to local schools. However, you need to sign up every
September for your charity of choice, and if I didn't get an update from my
child's school I wouldn't remember. It's linked to your existing club card for
most grocery chains - you go online and fill out a form. I'm sure whatever
organization you choose would be very thankful.

My mother has stayed there and it is inexpensive ($50 per night) and nice.
It is an old building and has the issues of old buildings. Bathroom windows
that don't shut easily, two few outlets. Have to unplug the fridge to turn
on the coffee maker. That sort of thing.

Hi Karen,

Just wanted to let you and neighbors know that around a week ago, there was a
man walking around our place, walking up the driveway and looking around. Chuck
confronted him and asked what he wanted. The man (latino guy in his late 30s)
answered that he was looking for an address. Chuck said he didn't buy his
answer and that the man needed to move on - which, he did. Then two nights ago,
Chuck caught the same man walking up the back staircase to our upstairs
neighbors' apartment (Frankie and Meredith). Again, Chuck asked him what he was
doing and the guy again said he was looking for an address. Chuck threatened to
call the police. The guy left and then moments later, Chuck watched a somewhat
new, white Toyota 4-Runner speed away.

No police report has been made yet.

I was in touch with them when we needed housing for friends and relatives
visiting this summer. Their elevator isn't working and their parking lot isn't
secure, but the prices are wonderful and the rooms look just fine from the
photos. I found them a little bit hard to reach by phone; hope that has changed.
Their website wasn't taking reservations when I tried in July and August; hence
I tried by phone.
Looks cool.
Will be interested to hear from others w/ any experience, too.

Great information but a little late getting it out to neighbors and police. If
it happened a week ago. We need to phone the police in a case like this. Its
a prowler or trespass at the least. Could also be reported as a possible
burglary suspect. Officers can respond and have cause to stop and identify the
person as well as question him and check him for warrants.

Also, if you haven't seen this already on the Larchmont Buzz, starting this

The length of time cards are available in stores will vary depending on the

One of our Olympic Division officers - Eric Mollinedo #31754 - is bicycling in

the police who have died in the line of duty. The event is in May and runs from

Officer Mollenedo needs to raise $1,800 for the National Law Enforcement

Charles H. Kim Elementary School was the site of a neighborhood meeting designed
to address the prostitution issue that exists along Western Avenue.
The prostitution along Western has impacted parts of our neighborhood in a
variety of ways over the years, but late last year the activity intensified and
expanded into the morning hours. The tipping point – young girls are regularly
seen working the streets near two local elementary schools – Charles H. Kim and
St. Brendan School. Neighbors and concerned parents issued a challenge to
Council Member Tom LaBonge – to help them take back their streets.
Thursday evening's meeting was essentially a progress report. And it's clear
that Council Member Tom LaBonge has made it a top priority for his office and
for the LAPD. Greater Wilshire Area Field Deputy, Ben Seinfeld, and LAPD's
Olympic Division – led by Olympic Area Commanding Officer, Captain Tina Nieto
and Olympic Area Patrol Commanding Officer, Captain Robert Arcos – have made a
lot of progress over the past few weeks.
The meeting was in 3 parts – Public Safety, City Attorney Office, Traffic
Changes.
Public Safety
Sergeant Dohmen, Supervisor for the LAPD Olympic Division Vice Unit, addressed
the role of the Vice Unit in patrolling the area. As an example, he shared that
Vice took 5 girls off the street earlier in the day. But those 5 girls were
probably back on the street later in the day due to the overcrowding in our
jails. LAPD is up against a never ending supply of desperate young women.
Vice will also run a reverse trick task force to catch the prostitutes'
clients…female LAPD officers dress up and reel in the guys soliciting the girls.
But there seems to be a never ending supply of them, too.
It's Vice's job to make sure that the girls who work the area know that LAPD
intends to be vigilant about patrolling and taking the girls in when they are in
violation of the law.
Senior Lead Officer Joseph Pelayo addressed some things we as citizens should
know:
• Call 911. When you call 911 the call gets logged and resources are diverted to
areas where crime is greater.
• Lighting! Lighting is a great deterrent to this kind of crime.
• Never approach a vehicle. The girls all carry something (like a knife) to
protect themselves and there is always someone watching out for them.
• LAPD Olympic Division Roll Call – every morning, Captain Arcos issues the
challenge to his officers to make Western Avenue a part of their morning
routine. To make their presence known.
City Attorney Office
Deputy City Attorney Tamar Galatzan addressed what goes on with these girls once
they are arrested. It used to be that a prostitute would get 90 days or less and
serve 10-25% of that sentence. Now…with the jail system full-up, a prostitute
will be booked and released in the same day.
Galatzan acknowledged that the City Attorney's Office recognizes they have to
find a better solution and change up the penalties for this crime. They are
working on some sentencing that might have a better result – e.g. sentencing
them to working for Caltrans, or cleaning up trash, etc.
The City Attorney's Office also has some diversion programs – but they work
better for the prostitutes' customers than they do for the women. Users must
plead guilty to the crime and then they are fined and sentenced to "reform"
school. After a period of time, the client can plead their case and get their
record cleaned up.
Traffic Changes
Field Deputy Ben Seinfeld is working the plan. He has taken his role in being
accountable to the community very seriously. Together with LAPD Senior Lead
Officer Pelayo, Seinfeld addressed proposed traffic engineering changes for
Western Avenue that have worked in other communities and should work for our
neighborhood.
Essentially, signs would be posted limiting left/right turns off Western Avenue
between 5th and Clinton and between the hours of 11p-6a. What this does is make
it more difficult for prostitutes' clients to turn into our neighborhoods and an
illegal turn gives the LAPD Officers a reason to pull over a potential Vice
crime in progress.
All in all, the problem is getting a lot of attention – and that's a good thing.
But it's a problem that is like a weed…you think you have it taken care of and
very quickly, it will be back with a bunch of friends. Right now, a lot of City
resources are focused on making Western Avenue prostitute-free. Stay tuned for
more.
A special thanks to Charles H. Kim Principal Kerry Kehrley who hosted the
meeting. What a great representative for LAUSD!

Good morning!
The update on Paramount is as follows:
We are in the stage of waiting for the City to do and release the Environmental
Impact Report ("EIR"). Then the public will have a chance to comment on the
content on the "EIR."
We give input on what issues may or may not have been considered fully enough.

Nothing happens construction-wise until the City Planning office has held
hearing, taken input, given all neighbors and businesses within 500 feet an
"adequate notice" of hearing dates and plans.

This process is likely to take 2 years, even for the part leading to approval of
the two 3-story parking structures on Melrose between Windsor and Plymouth and
between Bronson and Irving.

When construction is approved to begin, the hours will likely be 7 a.m to 6 p.m.
weekdays, slightly less on weekends (and we can advocate for restricted hours on
weekends.)

Please stay tuned to your mailbox, your local advocates on the street where you
live (where do you live, Sara? feel free to reply privately and I'll connect
you), to the Larchmont Buzz and to the lvna90004 yahoo group. Larchmont
Chronicle is following the story as well. Jonathan Brand in the CD 4 office, new
on the staff, joins Renee Weitzer in covering land use issues and also welcomes
your calls.

Does anyone know when Paramount is planning to start their big
construction project? And what the noise impact will be for the neighborhood -
what time in the morning the construction will start during weekdays and whether
they plan to work on weekends?

We are at 404 N. Van Ness Ave., and yes, our street lights have been out
for some time (at least one week). I called 311 numerous times, in fact it
is so dark here at night that last Tuesday morning I found a homeless man
sleeping on my neighbor's driveway behind his or her (they were completely
wrapped) cart. This is not a usual occurrence, and I believe it to be a
direct result of no street lights.

The third time I called 311 (Friday), I was told that they were out due to
stolen wiring and was not given a timeframe regarding repairs.

Thanks!

Hi, I'm at the 500 block of North Bronson and our street lights are
intermittent. The one on the corner of Rosewood and Bronson flickers on and off
and never quite stays on.
