Dear LULAC Nation:

Honoring our Hispanic Leaders
LULAC District III encourages you to attend the next Dallas Independent School
District Board of Trustees Meeting at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, June 25, at DISD
Headquarters located on 3700 Ross Ave., Dallas, TX 75204. We need people there
to support the naming of two schools opening next year after people who have
fought for Hispanic civil rights all their lives: Attorney Adelfa Callejo and
the late Joe May who served on the DISD Board of Trustees. We will show up as
early as 4 p.m. to strategize. Hope to see you there.

Health Reform
The statistics are shocking. Thirty-five percent of Latinos in the U.S. are
uninsured. Hispanics are more likely to skip yearly check ups and our rates for
diabetes, cancer and HIV-infection outpace other groups. We need to become part
of the conversation on health care reform. LULAC supports universal health care
(http://www.lulac.org/advocacy/platform.html). Get educated on this issue and
take action to make health care accessible for all. For more information on this
important issue that affects every Latino family, visit www.healthreform.gov.

Quarterly Meeting
Mark your calendars for Saturday, July 25, from Noon to 5 p.m. LULAC District
III will hold its quarterly meeting. Unlike past quarterly meetings where only
LULAC District officers, council presidents and council vice presidents were
invited, we want to invite every District III Adult, Young Adult and Youth
member to this quarterly meeting. We will have a short meeting followed by a
cookout and sports competition. We are working on a location. Details to come
soon.

LULAC National Convention
As a reminder, the LULAC National Convention takes place July 13-18, in San
Juan, Puerto Rico. For more information, visit:
http://www.lulac.org/events/convention09.html. If you are planning on attending,
please let LULAC District III Deputy Director Jesse Garcia know:

White Rock Lake Clean Up
LULAC will once again volunteer at the Love of the Lake Clean Up Project,
Saturday, July 11, from 8 a.m. to Noon. The meeting place is 1152 N. Buckner
Blvd., Dallas, TX 75218 (NE Corner of Garland Road and Buckner Blvd. in Casa
Linda Plaza – facing Buckner & Doctors Hospital). Gloves and bags will be
provided. Training and direction will be provided by volunteers at the site.
Councils are encouraged to show up to help out each second Saturday of the
month. Special thanks to Skyline High School which has shown up each month this
year!

Lifewalk 5K – We Need You!
LULAC 4871 – The Dallas Rainbow Council is leading the effort this fall to raise
awareness and money for LifeWalk — a 5K Fun/Run where North Texas community
members can help nonprofits that provide health care for people with HIV/AIDS,
help spread education on preventing the disease and provide assistance in
testing individuals. You can join our team by visiting:
www.lifewalk.kintera.org/2009/lulac. This event takes place Sunday, Oct. 11,
Noon, at Lee Park, 3400 Turtle Creek Blvd., Dallas, TX 75219. Last year we
raised $500. This year our goal is $1,000. Special thanks to Garland LULAC for
helping last year.

living with AIDS – the fourth highest figure in the nation.
-- Dallas Hispanic HIV/AIDS Statistics: Dallas County Health and Human Services
