The Coens return to tell a tale of a moral man who sees the world inexplicably turn against him in this darkest of comedies. Larry Nidus (Stuhlbarg) is a loving husband, committed father and dedicated professor who always does the right thing. But one day, everything starts to go wrong. His wife leaves him and her smug new lover has him move into a motel. Then his career is put in jeopardy by anonymous letters falsely accusing him of unnamed treacheries. And when his wife's new partner dies, she insists that he foot the funeral bill. We cannot help but laugh as we contemplate Larry's plight in a world with no silver linings, a world which might just seem uncomfortably familiar to us all.
Based on the Book of Job, perhaps? Meet in the bar by 9pm to buy tickets (show starts at 9pm but the ads are lengthy) or 8pm onwards for a crepe/drink. Helpful to know who to expect so please email/text if you are coming (07908 570748). Best wishes - Sarah
PS Remember The Truth about Love is on Weds evening, 7.30 S
LSM is a thriving Church community, which means inevitably, when organising an
LSM Social event, dates will clash with Church commitments for some people, and
for some more than others!
There is something happening every evening next week but I've had a couple of
requests to see An Education - Synopsis: Jenny (Carey Mulligan) a very bright
girl on the cusp of her 17th birthday, finds herself in a whirlwind romance with
the much older David (Peter Sarsgaard). Prior to meeting him, Jenny was working
hard at secondary school to ensure getting to Oxford University. When she sees
the lifestyle David can provide, one she never imagined could be hers, she's
hooked and thoughts of Oxford are forgotten. Then, when things are looking
pretty good for Jenny with the dashing David, the truth hits her like a ton of
bricks...... 'An Education' won the Audience Choice award and the
Cinematography award at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.
.......so the date for that will be Monday 16th, meeting in the bar at 8.15pm if
you want a crepe/drink, or 9pm to buy tickets for the 9.10pm show (which means
the Friends Committee members can join in).
On Wednesday 18th there is Traditional Folk Music at the University Centre from
8.30pm, which means that members of the PCC could join the fun after their
meeting!
The following week is similarly hectic but there is a free slot on Tuesday 24th
when we could see A Serious Man -
Synopsis: Imaginatively exploring questions of faith, familial responsibility,
delinquent behavior, dental phenomena, academia, mortality, and Judaism - and
intersections thereof - A Serious Man is the new film from Academy Award-winning
writer/directors Joel & Ethan Coen.
....... times for this film are not posted yet but, as usual, just email me if
you want to join us, so we know who we are waiting for, unless you particularly
want to turn up at the wrong cinema (in joke). POLITE NOTICE: Please don't
come to this if it puts you off coming to The Truth about Love at LSM the
following evening, Weds 25th, 7.30pm.
Best wishes - Sarah
Monday is clearly the least problematic day. Meet for crepe, served in the bar,
7.30 onwards, or meet at the Box Office, 8.45 (show time 9pm). It would be
helpful if you could confirm if you are joining us. Best wishes - Sarah (Mobile
no 07908 570748)
Tuesday of that week is Overseas Churches Link Group, and Thursday is
Deanery Synod, neither of which perhaps affect significant numbers of
people. However, I would be sorry if Wednesday 11th were chosen, as that
is the second autumn/winter course occasion. Personally I can only
manage the Monday. Fr Andrew

Jane Campion on BRIGHT STAR: The film is a kind of ballad, like Keats' Eve of
St Agnes – it is a story about the love affair of Fanny Brawne and John Keats.
It progresses in verses, charting their increasing involvement and attachment as
well as their deepening difficulties.
On our recent LSM visit to Hampstead and Highgate, a group visited Keat's House,
where Keat's and Fanny Brawne lived in neighbouring households. If you would
like to see this film, which has excellent reviews, w/b Nov 9th, please let me
know which day would suit you best (Mon - Thurs incl). We'll go whichever day
most people can manage. Sarah

Part ghost story, part psychological thriller and part love story, CREATION is
based on the complex and fascinating Annie?s Box written by Randal Hume Keynes,
the great-great-grandson of Charles Darwin. The film focuses on the relationship
between Darwin (Bettany, THE YOUNG VICTORIA) and his daughter Annie, whose
tragic early death had a pivotal effect on his research and his view of the
world as a Godless one. As his agnosticism grows, he is torn between his love
for his deeply religious wife (Connelly, A BEAUTIFUL MIND) and his revolutionary
theories. Rather than creating a historical document, director Amiel has crafted
a passionate portrait of an extraordinary mind in a state of extraordinary
conflict. The film is released to celebrate 150 years since the publication of
On the Origin of Species.
Screenings next week on Mon and Tues at 8.30pm and Wed and Thurs at 9pm. Film
2hrs duration. If you are interested in going as an LSM Social group, contact
me (Sarah Martin) and let me know which day is best for you. Personal
preference Mon or Tues with the earlier start time! Best wishes - Sarah

A photo on display in the parish room and on the LSM Photos website has been
correctly identified by Fr Nigel Hancock as one of Fr Cyril Patrick Hankey,
Vicar of LSM from 1925-1938 and later Dean of Ely. Previously it had been
incorrectly captioned as Fr Edward Maycock, Vicar from 1957-1966.
I have corrected the caption on the website and will return the photo with
corrected caption to the parish room this evening.

We have just had the disappointing news that Rig David, the Director of CRS, has not managed to get a visa in time to get here before Saturday. It seems that processing of visas in Delhi was put on hold for a couple of weeks - probably because of the recent security scare - and has only just restarted. Rig's is somewhere in the pipeline.
We are nonetheless going ahead as planned on Saturday: the Sung Mass will be at 11 am, and will be followed by a buffet lunch in the Parish Room, and a presentation about last November's visit to CRS in Calcutta in the afternoon.
We still expect an appreciable number of visitors, who are supporters of CRS, so please come and welcome them if you can.
This evening (Monday April 20th) at 1930, the Guild of All Souls sing their
office, followed by refreshments. All welcome.
Tuesday April 21st in St Bene't's church at 1145, Mere's Commemoration sermon,

year's preacher is Bishop Anthony of Hereford. Members of the University should
wear gowns.
Next Sunday, April 26th in West Wratting church (in our linked Balsham group of
parishes) there is a Bible-reading marathon. I understand that three
representatives from LSM will be taking part in the evening (2015-2145). I'm
sure spectators would be welcome, and transport could be co-ordinated leaving
from LSM after Evensong and Benediction.
