1. NATIONAL NEWS: White House Pity Party Crashers
================================================

So a pair of party crashers crashed a party at the White House.

Yawn.

Frankly, I don't see the problem. The house belongs to them, after all. They
paid for it, just like millions of other taxpayers. Why can't a taxpayer rub
shoulders with his employee every once in a while?

Why should a few politicians even be worthy of a big chunk of the attention of a
billion-dollar paranoia machine we call the Secret Service? What makes the
president and the simpering elites he surrounds himself with so much more
important than any Average Joe? In the words of Jonathan Swift, "whoever could
make two ears of corn, or two blades of grass, to grow upon a spot of ground
where only one grew before, would deserve better of mankind, and do more
essential service to his country, than the whole race of politicians put
together."

Politicians are generally a corrupt and worthless lot. They produce no wealth,
they grow no food for people to eat, they can't even deliver mail or set up a
justice system that clears more than half of all violent crimes. They consume
everything the free market can produce, and more, and then blame it when it
staggers under the load.

For wanting to be in such low company, criminal charges are not indicated.
Perhaps pity.

================================================
2. NATIONAL NEWS: I Call a Hoax on All Your Houses!
================================================

The hype machine on human-caused climate change is still in hyperdrive, but the
intellectual case has suffered a "giant sucking sound" by the release of
internal emails from a server at Britain’s Climate Research Unit, University of
East Anglia.

The messages essentially verified what so-called "deniers" have been saying for
years: The the government-funded scientists promoting "Anthropogenerated Climate
Change" or "ACC" have made major efforts to freeze researchers who don't toe the
line from scholarly journals, have grossly overstated the case for ACC or global
warming, and that they have repeatedly faked the data that was plugged in to
their climate models.

http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-25061-Climate-Change-Examiner~y2009m11d21-Cli\
mateGate-emails-provide-unwanted-scrutiny-of-climate-scientists

Be sure to check out the link to the "Searchable database of the CRU emails",
and read them for yourself.

http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/jamesdelingpole/100017393/climategate-the-fina\
l-nail-in-the-coffin-of-anthropogenic-global-warming/

There have been cases in the United States where a researcher took money from
the government for his research, fudged the data, was discovered, and was
prosecuted for fraud. One would hope that the government of Britain has the
sense at least to sue for its money back.

I can't wait to see the next media hype-wave. It sure has been entertaining
watching the back-flips on climate. See "Fire and Ice - Journalists have warned
of climate change for 100 years, but can't decide weather we face an ice age or
warming" here:

http://www.businessandmedia.org/specialreports/2006/fireandice/fireandice.asp

================================================
3. NATIONAL NEWS: Stock Pick
================================================

With the above in mind, that old saw about rich men's utopias -- where the poor
can just walk -- comes to mind. But I digress. I was thinking now might be a
great time to short the stock of Al Gore's Fisker Automotive Inc (Finland).
Fiskar, with the help of a U.S. government loan of $529 million, will build a
hybrid sports car -- in Finland, paying Finnish workers -- that will sell for
about $89,000.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB125383160812639013.html

Waitaminute... We're bailing out Finnish auto manufacturing?

When Billionaire Gore and his merry band of con artists finish with the U.S.
economy, what's going to happen to the Fiskar and all these other plug-in hybrid
(or electric) cars? Every wall outlet has a smokestack behind it somewhere.
Utility companies use coal and give off carbon emissions are going to be
strangled to death. When the price of electricity predictably skyrockets as a
direct (and planned) result, how practical are these hybrids going to be? The
proletariat won't be able to afford the electricity.

Fiskar might therefore be a very tempestuous stock bet. If Fiskar fails as a
result, the money will never be repaid to the American government. But who
cares? Half a billion here, half a billion there... Gore will have sold his
shares before the carbon taxes kill Fiskar and all the others...

4. STATE NEWS: FREE OPH KITS for libertarian student groups!
================================================

From the President of the Advocates for Self-Government:

In case you haven't heard, there is a libertarian revolution brewing on
America's campuses! Hundreds of campuses now have groups affiliated with the
Libertarian Party, Students for Liberty, and Young Americans for Liberty.

The Advocates wants these student groups to grow -- fast. Young libertarians
are, after all, the future of our movement. So we've decided to give our
acclaimed OPH (Operation Political Homeless) outreach kits to libertarian
student groups FREE -- if they simply promise to use them a minimum of three
times a year and send us photos documenting their OPH activity.

Normally OPH sells for $50.00. In just the past few weeks, we've sent 23 free
OPH kits to libertarian student groups around the country that have requested
them. We estimate these 23 kits alone will identify over a *thousand* campus
libertarians in the next year.

OPH is the best recruiting tool in the libertarian movement. OPH transforms an
ordinary ho-hum outreach booth into a crowd-drawing *event*. OPH makes it easy
for just a couple of libertarians to discover new libertarians and
libertarian-leaning folk wherever people are gathered. Added bonus: OPH is
*fun* -- for both OPH boothers and the public.

To learn more about OPH, and see photos of OPH in action, visit:
http://www.theadvocates.org/oph.html

In October, Young Americans for Liberty -- which has over 175 high school and
college chapters -- recommended Operation Politically Homeless to their campus
affiliates seeking new members and an increased campus presence.
http://www.yaliberty.org/

Similarly, the Republican Liberty Caucus, which seeks to advance libertarian
ideas within the Republican Party, is urging campus activists to "host OPH
booths at Republican events on campus or in your community."
http://www.rlc.org/rlc-on-campus/

And for years, Libertarian Party campus chapters have used OPH with great
success. For example:
http://lpva.com/Archives/News/2003/20030929botetourt.shtml

Here's one recent real-world example of what OPH can do. The brand-new
libertarian group at Colorado State University *tripled* their membership in
just one day, after their very first OPH. They started with just three members.
Their first OPH found 20 new libertarians on campus; seven joined the group.
Needless to say, they'll be doing more OPHs.

Imagine every campus libertarian group in the country tripling in size -- while
spreading the ideas of liberty. And then doing so again. And again. And again.
That's the promise of OPH! Libertarian student groups: contact us for
information on getting your free OPH kit. Email: info@...

OPH will help libertarian student groups identify lots of new
libertarian-leaning recruits on their campuses -- and successfully turn many of
those recruits into members and activist libertarians.

And that's good news for liberty!

5. NATIONAL NEWS: LP National Convention Update
================================================

Dear Delegates to the 2010 National Convention:

Our Bylaws prescribe how we allocate seats to representatives of affiliates who
will attend our 2010 National Convention in St. Louis. Delegate allocations
depend upon 1) vote totals for Bob Barr in 2008 and 2) Membership totals as of,
in this case, October 31, 2009.

All members are welcome to download and review our "Delegation Chair’s Manual",
which has been updated to reflect our October 31 membership cutoff date. See
this link:

         http://www.lp.org/files/Delegation%20Chair%27s%20Manual%202010.pdf

Of course, it’s not necessary to be a state or delegation chair to download and
read the document. It contains information about delegates, delegations and
procedures we’ll use in the 2010 Convention. These are not procedures that the
LNC has dictated, but are ones we ourselves as members have codified in our
Bylaws and Convention Rules.

7. EXPLORING LIBERTY: The LP's "Monopolies and Corporations" Plank
================================================

This issue, we bring you the Libertarian Party's platform position # "2.6
Monopolies and Corporations", which reads:

--------
We defend the right of individuals to form corporations, cooperatives and other
types of companies based on voluntary association. We seek to divest government
of all functions that can be provided by non-governmental organizations or
private individuals. We oppose government subsidies to business, labor, or any
other special interest. Industries should be governed by free markets.

9. STATE NEWS: The "Government Behaving Badly" Files: This Issue's Criminal

collecting a government paycheck? Let us know about it! Send announcements and

By the way, you won't be able to get any reports (other than judical records,
when the crime is prosecuted) from government about any of its employees who
have been fired or disciplined for breaking the law. Government considers
criminal 'crats to be protected by the rubric "confidential personnel matter".
They claim it isn't subject to FOIA. They're glad to hand out statistics about
criminal priests, though -- who are statistically far more rare than criminal
teachers and other 'crats.

Friends,

This is a monthly announcement describing the LPVA-Forum discussion mailing
list.

Be conversational -- we encourage members of this list to introduce themselves
when they join. Tell us who & where (county/city) you are and what you do, and
perhaps a few words about how and when you discovered you were a Libertarian.
Also feel free to note what locale you're in when you sign off of your message;
you might find a Libertarian "buddy" in your area to help you form a local group
by doing so. You just never know.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------\
----

This list was created & is maintained by LPVA member Marc Montoni, to benefit
members of the Libertarian Party of Virginia and other interested individuals.

Participants may post & discuss articles, opinions, comments and other items
relevant to the Libertarian Party to this list.

Has your local LP recently sponsored an outreach table? Tell us about it. Did
you run for office? Tell us what you learned. Have tips for successful outreach,
stories of conversations with legislators, or how to approach particular
interest groups? Share it! Have you written a Letter to the Editor recently?
Show it to us!

Thank you for your interest in the Libertarian Party!

Please direct all inquiries or comments regarding list policies to the list
owner (address on the home page). LPVA is not affiliated with this list and
bears no responsibility for the content posted to this list or the management
thereof.

Opinions or positions stated on this list are not necessarily Libertarian Party
positions, nor necessarily positions of the list owner.

Basic list guidelines are as follows:

-- Posts must be of interest to other Virginia LP members.

-- Please use polite language -- find a diplomatic way to say what you want to
say. Above all, remember it's always easier to complain from the sidelines.

-- List recipients who are not Virginia residents (or not LP members) MAY BE
ALLOWED to join and post to this list, as long as they stay on-topic.

-- Replies to any posting are welcome. But please don't re-post the entire

Dear folks -
This is important. Please pass it on to
everyone you know who is affected by it.
          Our belovedand benevolent Guv, Timothy
Kaine, has just announced that peole who have
been convicted of felonies in the past who would
like their civil rights restored should submit
their applications during his term -- that is, NOW.
For non-violent felonies -- such as drug
possessionand drug dealing -- the restoration
should be quick and much easier than it has been in the past.
The link to the news story on this is
<http://tinyurl.com/yg7l5fr>. Sorry to say that
I do not have a link to the original announcement.
Again, please pass this on. We have a
limited period of time to get those applications submitted.

Also feel free to note what locale you're in when you sign off of your message;
you might find a Libertarian "buddy" in your area to help you form a local group
by doing so.

--------------------------------------

Dear Friend of Liberty,

On November 14, Virginia Campaign for Liberty will host a Political
Effectiveness Seminar from 9am - 5pm at the Powhatan Village Building
Auditorium, located at 3910 Old Buckingham Rd., Powhatan, VA 23139.

Training at this seminar will start off with a course led by me on "Developing
Your Lobby Plan" and will be followed by one on the "Real Nature of Politics &
Elections" taught by Dimitri Kesari. This grassroots training is just in time
to prepare you for effectiveness in the upcoming legislative session in the
Virginia General Assembly.

The cost is $49 per person and includes a box lunch. You can register and
purchase your ticket online

in the mail. You will be checked in at the door when you arrive.

The deadline to purchase your ticket is November 7 so we can get in the order
for the box lunches. No tickets will be sold at the door.

I hope to see you there!

1. HARRISONBURG NEWS: Speech Code of the Month: James Madison University
================================================

From Samantha Harris at Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE):
James Madison University (JMU) has made a seemingly small change to one of its
policies that actually has significant implications for student expression. Last
year, JMU's policy on "Obscene Conduct" stated that: "No student shall engage in
lewd, indecent or obscene conduct or expression on university property or in
university-owned or operated buildings."

This year, the policy states that: "No student shall engage in lewd, indecent or
obscene conduct or expression, regardless of proximity to campus."

Given that "lewd" and "indecent" are - unlike "obscene" - terms that do not have
a clear legal definition, this policy could easily apply to expression that is
crude or vulgar but still constitutionally protected (as most crude and vulgar
expression is.)

4. MUST-SEE TV: Whole Foods' CEO John Mackey: Conscious Capitalism
================================================

http://reason.tv/video/show/918

John Mackey's Conscious Capitalism: The Whole Foods CEO on health care,
veganism, and free markets.

When he started his first organic food store in Austin, Texas in 1978, Whole
Foods Market CEO and co-founder John Mackey had no idea that he would eventually
usher in not just a revolution in how we shop but what we buy. If you dig being
able to buy dozens of types of once-exotic apples, or cheese, or wine, or soaps,
or countless other items, you can thank Mackey in part for helping to create
cathedrals of commerce that have vastly enriched our day-to-day lives and vastly
expanded our palates. (Full disclosure: Mackey has contributed to Reason
Foundation, the nonprofit that publishes this website.)

In August, Mackey became one of the most controversial businessmen in America
when he penned an op-ed for The Wall Street Journal outlining his company's
free-market-oriented health care system and offering eight concrete reforms that
would reduce costs and improve access. Noting that health care is not "a right"
as that term is properly understood, Mackey forcefully argued that increasing
government intervention into health care is precisely the wrong thing to do:
"The last thing our country needs is a massive new health-care entitlement that
will create hundreds of billions of dollars of new unfunded deficits and move us
much closer to a government takeover of our health-care system. Instead, we
should be trying to achieve reforms by moving in the opposite direction—toward
less government control and more individual empowerment."

The response from the left to Mackey's op-ed was swift: Advocates of
single-payer health care, union activists, and others called for protests at and
boycotts of Whole Foods, despite the fact that the company provides affordable
and well-regarded coverage to its employees.

As a cutting-edge entrepreneur who is comfortable quoting astrological signs and
Ludwig von Mises, who practices veganism and sells some of the best meat in
America, and who chases profits and is an outspoken advocate of charitable
giving, Mackey confounds conventional political categories. As an advocate of
what he calls "conscious capitalism," Mackey is that rarest of businessman: an
articulate and passionate defender of free enterprise and free individuals.

In late September, Mackey sat down with Reason's Matt Welch and Nick Gillespie
to talk about health care reform, corporate social responsibility (on which
Mackey has written for Reason), why government interventions rarely achieve
their goals, and how Mackey came to his unstinting belief in free markets.

================================================
5. EXPLORING LIBERTY: The LP's "Government Finance and Spending" Plank
================================================

This issue, we bring you an exploration of the Libertarian Party's platform
position # "2.5: Money and Financial Markets", which reads:

--------
We favor free-market banking, with unrestricted competition among banks and
depository institutions of all types. Individuals engaged in voluntary exchange
should be free to use as money any mutually agreeable commodity or item. We
support a halt to inflationary monetary policies, the repeal of legal tender
laws and compulsory governmental units of account.
--------

Just as a reminder, there's a nice-looking sticker you can buy that expresses
the "Abolish the Fed" sentiment right here:

The next meeting of the state committee will occur on Sunday, October 25, 2009
at 12:00 pm, with an 11:00 am lunch preceding.

October 4th is backup date, depending on the availability of a couple of SCC
members who may have scheduling conflicts with the later date. As soon as those
scheduling uncertainties are resolved, the date will be finalized.

The meeting will be at:

Pronto Italian Bistro & Pizzeria

pleased -- this is the real thing. Of course they have other American fare
available as well. PLEASE Remember -- if we don't purchase meals, we won't be
able to continue meeting in the private sector. Please buy a meal from the
restaurant SO THAT THEY CAN AFFORD TO KEEP GIVING US A FREE MEETING ROOM.

Minutes of previous meetings are posted at:

Bring your appetite, your ideas, be ready to roll up your sleeves, and help us
win a free country!

7. STATE NEWS: The "Government Behaving Badly" Files: This week's Criminal
Bureaucrats
================================================

Seen any government employees facing justice for crimes committed while
collecting a government paycheck? Let us know about it! Send announcements and
news to <ODLL@...> or <mailto:ODLL@...?Subject=Criminal_Bureaucrats> !

11. Deep Thoughts
================================================

"Whenever I start getting sad about where I am in my life, I think about the
last words of my favorite uncle: 'A truck!'"

================================================
12. P.E.S.T. - "Portable Electro-Shock Torture" Devices
================================================

A writer on LewRockwell.com recently suggested that Tasers be renamed
"P.E.S.T."'s - "Portable Electro-Shock Torture" Devices. Excellent advice.

It's now simply a matter of recorded history that tobacco companies lied about
the hazards of smoking. Not that I care -- people generally knew the risks
beginning in the forties, and many decided to smoke anyway. Had there not been
the possibility that people who ignored the risks of cigarettes for their entire
lives then later running to trial lawyers to get money when the risks bore
fruit, it is likely that cigarette manufacturers wouldn't have continued lying
for so many decades after the game was widely known as being rigged; but
liability concerns are mostly a function of our inept government. Smoking is a
voluntary choice anyone should be able to make; and they should be allowed to
live with the consequences of doing so.

On the other hand, being tasered (PEST'ed) isn't a voluntary thing. Yet despite
the lessons of history, PEST manufacturers, such as Taser International's Tom
Smith (see
http://www.cbc.ca/gfx/images/news/photos/2008/01/30/smith-cp-4259614.jpg ) have
taken pages from the old tobacco playbooks and have been lying through their
collective teeth for over a decade about the dangers of hitting people with
PEST's:

	 http://www.yourlawyer.com/articles/read/11338

Now, I'm not a fan of get-rich-quick litigation schemes by any stretch. I think
a huge percentage of lawsuits are outright fraudulent (like those that made
Democrat John Edwards rich); and the ones that are legitimate often win
outrageous awards. However, PEST manufacturers by overstating the safety of
PEST's are simply *begging* to be dragged into court and stripped clean of all
wealth. And eventually, trial lawyers are also going to start winning liability
cases against PEST *users* - police departments. And that puts taxpayers on the
hook.

Tasers should be banned until:

1) Manufacturers are willing to admit their dangers; and,

2) Police forces that use tasers are likewise willing to accept full liability
for deaths and injuries due to PEST's; and,

3) Individual LEO's are criminally charged with assault, manslaughter, and
murder when they taser anyone who wasn't directly threatening them with
life-threatening harm.

If these reforms aren't accepted, Portable Electro-Shock Torture Devices should
be banned. Law enforcement officers can wait for the arrival of a *truly* safe
product.

In any discussion of PEST's, it must be remembered that NO studies have been
done about whether there is increased likelihood to draw and fire the Taser
among government officers who carry them. Do such studies exist? It is
reasonable to assume that, of the 400 deaths attributable to PEST's, some amount
(possibly most) were situations that would NOT have involved escalating to a gun
(although these days one never knows).

Such information would reveal whether the true crime of the PEST is that it
tends to escalate, rather than mitigate, violence. Are any or all of the 400
deaths attributable wholly or in part to taser use since 1999 above and beyond
the already-gory background rate of police gun violence?

Many of the 400-plus deadly tasings are multiple tasings by several officers
against a single subject. Expecting the officers to report accurately what
happened, when hospitalization and/or death results, would be a idiotically
naive expectation. Police officers generally aren't stupid, and are very good
at colluding -- indeed, they're trained to collude.

If it is demonstrably true statistically, PEST's are just another tool to enable
the passive to get aggressive immediately and thus raise the overall level of
lethal violence. But government doesn't *need* any more tools of violence -- it
needs far fewer. But a more permanent solution is the single best solution for
overzealous triggers: get policing out of the hands of government altogether.
There are already thousands of private police providers in every city in the
country -- they're listed in your Yellow Pages under the category "security".
And unlike government police, private police providers would be expected to be
fully liabile for their employees' actions.

13. VIRGINIA TASER TALLY: Something for the Police State to be proud of

Repeats:   This event repeats every year.
Notes:   On this day in 1991, Bulgaria became the last of the former Soviet client states in Eastern Europe to repeal [most of] communism.

In Bulgaria's case, the issue was decided by an election.

The next day, people were seen dancing in the streets, singing, "Ding-dong, the Ding-dongs are Gone!" to the tune of the Wizard of Oz' "Ding Dong, the Witch is Dead".

In retrospect, the ding-dongs weren't gone long; they later re-appeared, teaching at universities in the United States.
