Subject: News from Southside!
What do you get when you combine Michigan’s largest sprint triathlon,
a new weekly farmers market, a popular community festival, and a
growing number of neighborhood park projects? A very busy summer in
South Lansing!
Even though we’ve increased the number and size of our programs, South
Lansing CDA still operates with a small, dedicated staff. As a
result, we put the newsletter on hold for a few months to better
manage our resources. We hope you enjoy the return of
SouthLansing.Org with this special edition highlighting our 2009
summer activities.
Finally, anyone interested in improving the physical environment in
Lansing (streetscapes, transportation, building designs, land use,
etc.) please take note of the Community Character Workshop being held
on October 29 (see pg. 4). I participated in a “dry run” of the
workshop, and I think anyone interested in master planning will find
it fascinating.

Glad to have you join. I live on the far west end of Glenburne and do my best to post anything I see or hear that may interest the neighborhood.

7. There are so many Website’s on the internet that allows one to express themselves for fun, entertainment or to promote. Date: Wed, Jun 3, 2009 at 9:36 PM Subject: New Farmers Market & Trail Opening Saturday at Davis Park
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Catie Parker,
SLCDA Health Initiatives Coordinator
NEW!!! South Lansing Community Farmers Market and Paved Trail at Davis Park
Every Saturday, Benjamin
Davis Park is the place to be for Fresh Food, Fitness, and Fun!
Lansing, MI – June 3, 2009 – For years,
residents across South Lansing have wanted a farmers market where they could
purchase fresh, locally grown produce. In addition, residents in Southeast
Lansing have wanted a safe place to walk and bike in an area that lacks
sidewalks on several major roads. Thanks to the South Lansing Community
Development Association, both dreams are about to become reality.
What: South
Lansing Community Farmers Market
When: Every Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., June
through September
What: Grand
Opening of Paved Path at Benjamin Davis Park
When: Saturday, June 6, 10 a.m.
Where: Benjamin Davis Park, 5614 Pleasant Grove
Rd. (between Jolly and Miller)
Join us as we officially open our new market and the new
3/4 mile paved path. Shop at the market, meet local growers, learn about food
preservation, try new recipes, stroll along the newly paved walking path and
visit with neighbors. Our market is unlike any other because it offers produce
from community growers and urban yard gardeners as well as local farmers.
This Saturday, the market will offer early harvest
produce, including asparagus, radishes, rhubarb, salad greens, spinach, Swiss
chard, and turnip greens, as well as garden starts and potted perennials.
We’ll also have a children’s activity table and information on food
preservation presented by MSU Extension.
Throughout the season, we’ll offer a growing
variety of fruits and vegetables, as well as value-added products like dips and
sauces, jams and jellies, honey, maple syrup, baked goods, and soaps.
The market and the path were made possible with support
from the Michigan Department of Community Health, the Ingham County Health
Department, the Lansing Parks & Recreation Department, MSU Extension, and
members of the South Lansing community.
5. Secure all windows, door locks, garage doors, patios, etc. when you leave your home, if briefly or lengthy. Make sure you have good sturdy doors with good deadbolts.
4. If you are out gardening or doing lawn maintenance, please either be aware of your surroundings at all times or make sure you lock your doors. Someone could enter your premises while your back is turned or catch you off guard.
3. Tell a trusted friend, neighbor or family members you are going out of town or will be away for a specific amount of time. If you have someone you can trust, please make sure you reiterate the importance of them not sharing your information with the whole world (smile). Please refer to the going away pamphlet that was passed out in the past.
2. Be careful who you share your personal business or information with. Yes, unfortunately it is sad but true. We are in a time and era where we have to be careful who we trust and reveal information too. The people whom you entrust with personal information may be safe or trustworthy, but their teenagers or the other people they reveal your personal information too may NOT be! You catch my drift?Of course the entrusted may or do not mean you any harm, but unknowingly they may be setting you up or locking in your fate.
The tips that I am about to give you are my very own personal tips over a period of time that I have experience from observations as well as personally monitoring residence when I have visited or distributed literature. You have received pamphlets from me that I felt may or will benefit you or someone in the future or possibly even save You or Someone else’s life. Do not take the pamphlets or my tips lightly....
1. Keep your home/apartment doors locked at all times (this includes garage doors). If you have your front door open please make sure your screen door is locked and secure. Members to be honest many of YOU are guilty of not locking your screen or front doors. Yes, I checked! When I passed out literature, I cannot begin to count how many of you had your screen doors (including main/side doors) unlock. The numbers were staggering. I was thinking to myself if I was a criminal this is just way too easy.....no one probably would have known and I could have gotten away with murder-rape-or robbery. Yes, I want you to be afraid, please be very afraid. Okay, some might say people don’t know what type of protection a person has in their residence such as; dog, gun, alarms other person’s living there, etc. (9 times out of 10 you will be caught off guard). I can almost bet it is 10 out of 10 but I am throwing luck in.What good is having
all this protection if you are not near it or the dog(s) is out in the back yard? Even if others are there what can they do if they are caught off guard with a gun pointed at them? So having people there does not make you completely safe. Did you know there are criminals in and out of your neighborhood that case? Casing are criminals who survey residential areas and folk’s habits to see who or what is most vulnerable.
A block captain just informed me that there is a black male wearing a hoodie (age-height is uncertain because it was dark outside) knocking on folks door asking if they ordered a pizza and he has what is believe to be a pizza container or box. The contents inside of the container/box is unknown. This happen at around quarter to ten this evening. The male was caught in someones backyard that was not at home lurking, when neighbors yelled to him asking what was he doing and he ran through the common fields.
The police has been notified, but the male is still at large.
In the upcoming future I will offer tips that I have given to my neighborhood watch members that I would like to pass on regarding safety from my past experience and observations. If some of you have seen these tips, please use them as a refresher.
Good day to you neighborhood watch members & neighbors. Unfortunately, I decided to cancel future neighborhood watch meetings due to such low turn out. The past neighborhood watch meetings were always informative with police officersalways readily available to answer questions. I considered inviting prosecutors & other City Officials to attend future meetings to answer questions regarding city/county procedures, ( some even volunteered) but it would have been pointless because of the lack of participation. This meeting basically was provided for not only neighborhood watch members, but for the entire surrounding subdivis ions to get a familiar repertoire with police, problem solve or share concerns. Repeatedly , in
the past folks would mention that not enough police were patrolling or their lack of involvement. People need to realize that you must also show support and pride in your neighborhood by attending neighborhood meetings whenever possible even if you only can stay a short while. I do realize we are all busy and could probably find other things better to do, but regardless you should and can always make time for change, regarding the safety and betterment of your neighborhood. Hopefully, folks will continue their participation with neighborhood watch by at least calling the police of any suspicious activities/behavior s and keep their eyes and ears open. I will continue being a coordinator and always be available to answer questions, concerns or direct you toward the proper channels. People also need to realize that although I will help assist you with concerns, as I have mention
before in the past the procedure is for YOU to call the proper authorities or officials first, and then after unsuccessful attempts, notify the coordinator with dated documentation of the concern(s) with your name, address & phone number and I will pass on your concern(s) to the proper channels. Remember all information as always passed unto me is strictly confidential and will not be shared with other watch members (unless you give me permission to do so-with written permission of course). I will remain involved because I have actually seen a positive change in the neighborhood( s) and I will continue to pass on valuable information and I LOVE WHAT I DO! United we stand, divided we fall and criminals look for signs of weakness or uncaring neighborhoods. They test the waters, next they plunge in. *Food for thought*. Thanks a bunch Darla for opening up your facilities for me to use
:).
