My Letter to City Council re: LBCTelevision - from KaRi   Message List
Reply Message #23734 of 26504 |
Cable Access is in jeopardy. This is the letter I sent to City
Council the day of the council meeting where LBCT was added as line
item # 36... Karen LaMantia is trying to get use of LB's Library
Channel and is brainstorming about a new studio.

I myself have a quick & easy & free fix - read below. I have
no qualms about boycotting verizon & ATT who paid a politician
(Nunez) to change the cable access laws) and also boycotting all
cable TV providers who are NOT supportive of community. Although I've
been promoting Charter like heck for years (people contact ME for
info on Charter ex/employees because they find me via google AND yelp
cancelled my account(!) because I gave Charter such a rave review
their reason was that is sounded "too commercial"!!)

My brand new LIVE TV Show had 42 viewers this past Wednesday and I
didn't even tell anyone I was going live! Find it on my website,
www.LBweeklyOnline.com and watch this Sunday 9-11am!

ALSO: Speical Thanks to www.Long-
Beach-Arts.org, LB's oldest art org who is offering to let us
(LBCTelevision Producers) use their nonProfit status if needed...

RE: Saving Cable Access TV in Long Beach + Signal Hill, CA

Watch this video: http://alliancecm.blip.tv/file/1278920 Also 4
hours of LBCTelevision programming can be viewed here:

www.youtube.com/LBCaccess - clips from 29 LBCT shows!

Today is an awesome day! That is because Long Beach cable access
channels 65, 69 and 95 still exist! Before you plan on NOT watching
local TV in January, please keep in mind the wonderful things that
COULD happen if those who are affiliated with LBCT continued as usual
in 2009:

1). The City Council members COULD establish a stronger tie with
producers by including them on a mailing list for issues in their
area (districts) and by giving them a "heads up" in extreme cases of
emergency to further the word (ie. fires, earthquakes, bird flu,
insect swarms, missing childen, etc.). LOCAL IMPORTANT INFORMATION
that needs to be conveyed in a timely and professional manner.

2). The LBCT Producers of LOCAL TV here in Long Beach and Signal
Hill, California COULD spread the word MORE THAN EVER that the
company Charter Communications not only PROVIDES local TV, they have
been doing so for quite sometime and - Thank You! Imagine if Charter
Communications realized that LBCT Producers COULD be free walking
advertisements for their company in this very competitive market!

3). Local EMERGENCY numbers COULD be listed on the Community
Calendar (when TV programming is off) as well as when all of the
Neighborhood and City Council meetings take place. Flu Shots,
Grafitti Hotlines... This Channel COULD be a hotbed for resources.

4). The LBCT Channel COULD inform viewers when local VOTING takes
place, indicating where and when with websites for those wanting to
learn further about the issue. We all know local politicians who
have had good exposure and their views broadcasted over LBCT Channels
65, 69 or 95. Even via Video On Demand!

5). The LBCT Channels provide guidance and faith to the homebound
and penned up. LBCT is a teaching tool and for many years it has
taught not only the viewers, but the producers themselves that (we)
can live as ONE COMMUNITY using the same resources: Public Access
TV : What a wonderful way to gather people! Long Beach TV
Community is a shining example of "passionate people with opposing
opinions" as I'd say on TPSradio via LBCTelevision and it COULD stay
the "strongest cable access station in the nation." (See
www.LBCTawards.com )

6.) LBCTelevision COULD push special programming on the City Channel
and vice-versa, especially when the show topic fits the agenda -
vice-versa! It COULD be used in the classroom and SHOULD be
available in hospitals and hotels - YES, where viewers are
very "open" to taking in new information! (The hospitals don't
appear to have cable TV - hint! Charter - and the hotels are using
OnDemand.com). WHY LOCAL PROGRAMMING isn't on JetBlue Airlines is
also beyond me...

7). The current Long Beach Community Television Producers are a
great bunch of people. (We) have varied opinions and beliefs but I
personally believe we don't have any pure jerks on board that would
do anything to harm this City. Imagine if LOCAL NEWS came from an
(internet) production source run by dimwit boneheads or opportunists
from ANYwhere reporting on and exposing Long Beach's dark side? NOW
IS THE TIME to embrace these local content providers! As I stated,
(you) have a really great group of LEADERS taking part in LBCT as it
is today. (Okay, some of us could be a little loony... I resemble
that remark). Imagine how locals COULD get their local entertainment
& news and improve on that!

8). Collaborating with The Library Channel COULD only increase the
knowledge of (our) people and expose Higher Learning for what it is:
Opportunity! The more you know, the more places you can go!We should
also collaborate with the police (perhaps showing LB's Most Wanted
photos when TV programming is off). LBCT is such a diverse
community, imagine learning a little spanish or khmer on local TV?
There are current shows teaching yoga and sign language....

9). Resources: Imagine programming that hooks that kid about to
leave his house with a shotgun and a bag of badnews.
Something "local" on TV captures his attention, next thing you know
it he's learning about getting out of gangs AND even mental health
resources... He realizes how BIG Long Beach really is and imagines
beyond the city lines as he becomes A Bigger Man...This COULD be your
cousin's kid! (Note: we have a parent in LBCT that keeps his
offspring preoocupied with local TV programming and off the streets! )

10). We COULD be an example to every other city around the world.
LBCT - Long Beach Community Television has worked seamlessly because
of the direction and support from Judy Baker who, in my opinion
should just take the "Top Ten" award for a local making a BIG
DIFFERENCE in our community. I'd like to thank her for her role in
that at this time and also Engineer Doug Wood for broadcasting my
internet radio show from csulb on Charter Communications'
LBCTelevision.
Oh, what it COULD be!

Most importantly, I think Long Beach City Council's brainstorming
about LBCT and unanimously overriding the self-centered actions of a
politician not even from Long Beach who affected the Law involving
PEGS (Public/Edu/Gov't channels) will show the community of LB and
the world that LB is not a pushover! I motion to continue with LBCT
as usual until this issue is settled without the need for an attorney
and a cost of thousands to protect First Amendment Rights.
(Especially in this economy, you know households will scrounge to
keep traditional TV programing/basic cable rather than buy into high
tech/internet).

City Council members, I urge you to come up with a mutually
beneficial solution for local programming with LBCTproducers Karen
Ashikeh LaManria, Ed Wode and Dr. Marshall Blesofsky.

If their recommendations do not happen, I personally suggest that 1/3
of the P.E.G. monies go towards buying every producer the equipment
to broadcast via a site like www.stickam.com/theprimespotcom

Thanks for your time, it's all up to YOU!

Note: Please forward to Alan and Bonnie Lowenthal, PAUL ALLEN
Founder of Charter and also the 3 Top Honchos who make business
decisions for Charter Communications in California.
