Please welcome Tamara Batory to the group.

Tamara, your story is so common amongst members of our group, as our
parents often could not speak of this devastating and often horrific
experience that is sometimes called "The Polish Gehenna" or literally
"HELL". (see
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Kresy-Siberia/surveys?id=10822393 for a
members poll on this naming topic).

I know that you will learn so much just by surfing through our website
links, looking at the files in our FILES archive, the photos and
documents in our image GALLERY and reading some of our archived
messages.

Please feel free to ask the group anything... we like to be a friendly
and supportive family of interest.

By the way, when the war broke out is it likely that your father's
family was in Poland not Ukraine - these "borderlands" (the "Kresy
Wschodnie") only changed hands after the Soviets invaded Poland in 1939
under their alliance with Nazi Germany.

In September, it will be 60 years ago that Operation Marketgarden
took place, the Battle of Arnhem, and the largest airborne operation
ever.

As always, Poles will play a prominent part in its commemoration.

When people consider Polish war exploits during WWII, they
invariably think of brave Polish pilots during the Battle for
Britain and of places like Monte Casino.

It is generally less known that Polish soldiers were instrumental in
the liberation of the Low Countries, in particular the southern part
of the Netherlands.

Each year on 5 May, when the Dutch celebrate their freedom from the
Nazi occupiers, Polish soldiers and their descendants take up a
place of honour in proud recognition of their valiant efforts.
Quite a number of Polish soldiers fell in love with the country,
with Dutch girls or with both, and stayed on when it became obvious
that Poland was being enslaved by the Soviet Union.

During the Battle of Arnhem, paratroopers of the 1st Polish
Independent Parachute Brigade under the command of Major-General SF
Sosabowski were dropped over the battle zone.
Ironically, the Brigade had been formed with the aim of liberating
Poland itself.
But the Allies never allowed it!

There are many interesting websites about the battle of Arnhem.
Some of the most interesting are:
www.fireandfury.com/britinfo/polesarnhem.pdf
www.wingsofliberation.nl/mg-chrono-uk.html
www.marketgarden.com
The latter also contains a Roll of Honour.

Funny you should mention it.

I'm in the middle of a book by an American who was a
platoon leader in the 82nd Airborne and was in the
Waal river crossing durning Market Garden - about 15
km from Arnhem.

He writes about how British tanks crossed the Waal
over the bridge his unit took, and stopped on the
other side.

The 82nd people knew that the Polish and British
airborne lads were getting chopped up at Arnhem, and
thought the Brit tankers would head there, but they
didn't.

The Americans were delirious with rage over this lack
of action on the Brits. One of American officers
sergeants threatened to shoot one of the tank
commanders, and drive it away himself.

The Brits eventually did move off to Arnhem and had
their lead tank nailed by a German 88. Rather than
pushing the dead tank off the road and continuing,
they returned to the bridghead on the Waal, and
refused to proceed to Arnhem without direct orders to
do so.

This is the opinion of one lowly US junior officer
with a limited view of what was happening. There
might have been good reason not to send the Brit
tankers to Arnhem. I don't know enough about Market
Garden to have an informed view.

Also a mention should be given to Breda in Holland as it was the Polish Armoured Div that took the town

You are right, but the liberation of Breda was not part
of 'Operation Marketgarden' (the Battle of Arnhem) which was
essentially the airborne operation to try and seize the Dutch
bridges across the River Rhine and its tributaries.

Each year the southern Dutch city of Breda honours the Polish troops
who liberated it during WWII.

I am not sure if the mines near Dudinka were salt mines. My fiance, a pilot
who was later killed flying over France, spent some time there and I believe
that they were nickel mines, not salt mines. I would like to have some first

removing pine tree stumps with long roots. It made me a pretty strong

In this age, if anyone owns a computer, one "HAS TO" buy and use an
anti-Virus software!!! I use Norton Utilities. There are others and some
are free. It is not acceptable not to have such a program!!

Else it is for certain you will get a Virus, Worm or Trojan sooner or later
which will ruin your computer and you'll loose your documents. Then you'll
INFECT everybody else. Your computer will be the "Virus Host " . A lot of
times you may not know or notice that you are the Virus Host. These hackers
are very clever how they disguise and infect the world with their evil
programs.

Once you install and use an Anti-virus, you still have to be religious and
download at least once a week, the new 'Virus Definitions" from the
manufacturer's web site. Because there are many new viruses worms, etc .
being written by these criminals every day.

It is the best $30 you will spend so please buy and use it.

Wladyslaw,

Your date (13/04/40) and place of deportation (near Semipalatinsk) are the same as mine. I wander, however, whether you remember exactly where you were "near Semipalatinsk. My mother and I were dropped off in Kanonierka, a little village 60 km from Semipalatinsk. I remember also that the village was surrounded on three sides by a rather large lake. Do you have any memories from the region? Are there any good websites from the area?

Very briefly, my name is Wladyslaw Milkowski (where l read l with /) . When I was 9 my mother, brother and I were deported on 13.4.1940 from Lwow to Kazakhstan (near Semipalatinsk). In August 1942 we left USSR together with Polish Forces to Persia. Later on to Palestine where my brother and I joined Polish Cadets. In 1947 I arrived in England where I have been living since. My wife is also Polish and our daughter speaks fluent Polish.

Dear Jan,

Are you a descendant of a Polish soldier who helped to liberate the
Netherlands?

The memorial which you saw in the Dutch village of Driel is
dedicated to the First Independent Polish Parachute Brigade. It
bears the inscription `Surge Polonia' – Poland Rise, and
a plaque with the names of 94 Polish soldiers who died here during
WWII.

I know from experience of the honour and recognition bestowed upon
Polish forces for their part in the liberation of the Netherlands.
All Polish war veterans who took part in its liberation, were
awarded the freedom of the Dutch city of Breda.
Every year, Polish soldiers take a place of honour at liberation
commemorations all over the country.
Polish Lieutenant-General Stanislaw Maczek (born in Lwov!),
commander of the First Armoured Polish Division which landed in
Normandy in 1944, and who died in Scotland at the ripe old age of
102 years, chose to be interred among his men at the Polish military
cemetery at Breda – the Netherlands.
(In a stunning display of valour, the Polish soldiers of this
Division sealed the fate of the German forces in Normandy. But they
paid a heavy price: 2,300 dead!).

I contacted the official Dutch War Graves Commission for their
comments on your remarks that Polish soldiers were buried
`somewhere on the side', and by implication had `no
normal place' in one of the Dutch cemeteries that you visited.

The Commission denies emphatically that Polish soldiers are buried
separately from others.
Firstly, the Commission says that no Polish soldiers are buried in
the village of Driel; only Commonwealth soldiers.
Secondly, that in all other Dutch war cemeteries, including the
largest one at Oosterbeek near Arnhem, where 1,600 British soldiers
are buried as well as 80 Polish soldiers, no separation whatsoever
has taken place on grounds of nationality.

I felt that I should set the record straight.

Kind regards,

I am the son of a Polish soldier who was in Anders Army. He came to the Netherlands in May 1947.

The graves we saw were probably in Oosterbeek. Especially one younger person in the group was surprised to see all Poles buried at the side of the cemetry while all other soldiers had a more prominent and unseperated place. They were working at the cemetry, maybe some things have changed now.
I mail this also to the people who were there with me so that they can confirm what I saw.

notice it in the village because of street names and I think there
was a statue or something like that. The most striking was that the
other allies had a normal place at the cemetry and the Poles were
somewhere on the side of it.

I remember now that the Poles were aside as it had something to do with the cemetry being foreign property and Poland was not an owner of the soil in which the soldiers were buried.

I looked for old maps, WWII, type, but all I could find is these extremely detailed modern day maps of Russia. The Arkangel Oblast is here:

http://mapy.mk.cvut.cz/data/Rusko-Russia/Arkhangelsk/

all the other ones are here:

http://mapy.mk.cvut.cz/news.htm

If you don’t have these, then I hope they help you. They are in Russian however.

You can get translation tables at :

http://pages.prodigy.net/l.hodges/translint.htm

So Kotlas would be written as: KOT^AC   where ^ looks like a pi symbol.

Aleks. who was in Signals with Anders HQ during World War II, and I plan to
go to Italy for the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Cassino. We hope our
younger son, Gregory, will be able to take time off from his project in
Brussels to join us. The celebrations go on for one week, with days
allocated to different nationalities who fought there, including the
Germans. The day for the Poles to commemorate and remember is Tuesday May
18th but there will be an international parade of all veterans on Friday May
21.
We are wondering if any other K-S listers will be there. If so, it
would be good to meet in person. Let's plan to get together in Cassino.
On the way back to Canada in early June, we are thinking of stopping
over in London and thereabouts for a week. Again we would be pleased to meet
people there, possibly at POSK. We will give you more definite dates in a
couple of weeks once we confirm our flights.
Looking forward to meeting more of you in person,

Joan,
Do you have any idea of what kind of accomodations are possible around there? I
suppose
everything has been booked for ages already? How far is it from Rome? I just
looked on the
map and Cassino looked about halfway between Rome and Naples.

I've found several members too.

Just "left" click on the specific page (two times) until you see the
highest resolution image on your screen. Then RIGHT click on the image. A
new windows opens up, now choose "Save Picture As...". A new window opens up
again. You can now name this file anything you want, and save it as a JPG
file or a BMP. The file will be around 800Kbytes.
Now you can use windows paint or any other program to zoom in on this saved
file.

=PWlist&id=01_2_A0441_B0450

Another way is: To whatever you are viewing on your screen, you can save it
to the "Paste Buffer" by holding down the "Alt" Key and pressing the "Print
Screen SysRq" button. Once the image is in the "Paste Buffer" , then you can
open any application you want, like Word, or Paint, etc.. and paste the
buffer into the document (Ctrl V). This gives you limited resolution
however.

I just did it to this page :

I too may be interested in a trip to Cassino although I think
accomodation may well be the problem. Any info would be greatly
appreciated.

I'm also thinking about traveling to Warsaw for the Uprising
commemorations in August. Does anyone have any idea as to what will
be happening apart from the customary candlelit vigil?

Thanks,

Jurek.

Bert,
It could be your file size is too large.

My scanner is only is capable of saving scanned pictures/documents as BMP
types. These files are not compressed and extremely large. BMP file types
are a fixed size. A normal 8.5 by 11 inch page might be several Mbytes
depending on scan resolution. I have some scanned at 600 dots per inch
which are 98Mbytes.

To email or post files on a web site I always have to change their format
to a JPG type. It'll be good to get it under 1 Mbyte.

Open the BMP file with an application like Adobe Photoshop. Once opened on
your desktop, simply go to "File" , then select, "Save As ...". A new
window opens up. Now under format, click on the down arrow and select JPG.
Now click on "Save". A new window pops up and now you can select how much
compression you want to apply to this file. It's a compromise between a
large detailed file vs. small less resolution file. If you select a number
like 5 or medium it should be a nice compromise.

If you don't have an application like Photoshop, you can use "Paint" which
comes with every windows for free. Open the file with Paint, then "Save
As...". Paint however does not have an elastic compression choice. It has a
fixed Medium compression as the default.

Hopefully this helps.
Zbyszek
