If you go to http://www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/loctown.htm and plug in KOLBISZOWA and select Russia you get over 20 potential candidates.  However, these 2 seem more likely given the spelling and pronounciation:

KOLBYCHEVO    54.24 N. 127.11 E.  Russia     3286.2 miles NE of Moscow
KOLBYSHEVO      56.27 N. 74.40  E.  Russia     1411.5 miles ENE of Moscow

and maybe CHALBYSHEVO    58.04 N. 91.54 E     Russia     1998.1 miles ENE of Moscow

Did your family have any documents from the British or Polish forces that might narrow down the region?

On the other hand, by July 1942 she would have already been released under the 1941 Sikorski-Majsky  agreement and this could well have been a place in transit.  For clues on the original holding place, it is worth looking for other clues.

Were your parents deported to the same place?  Did you already know that the Hoover Institution (Box 172) has the "Amnesty Certificate" of a Franciszek Piotrowski (surname recorded as "Pietrowski" due to inexact  translation from Russian), son of Michal, born in 1916 in Tarnopol province?  With sons Zbigniew born 1937 and Mieczyslaw born 1940?  It records that he was held captive at "Priluzskoie Raionnoie Otdelenie".

A Bogumila Klosowska, daughter of Jan and born in Miechow country, Kielce province in 1922, was also captive at "Priluzskoie Raionnoie Otdelenie" (Amnesty Certificate in Hoover, Box 162).  Perhaps a relative of your mother's (who I believe was born in Zembrocin, Miechow county on 26.6.1911)?

May be worth getting hold of those certificates if you do not have them yet....

Usually, 4-6 weeks to clear backlog when over, but we just don't know about this time. Christmas coming too!

Dear Group:

I would like to apologize for the September and October submissions not being placed on the Wall as yet.  Halina and I were basically on vacation in September.  At the beginning of October my computer had to be sent for service and was just returned to me this week.  Yesterday when I began adding two months of submissions, I realized there is a problem which will be taken care of, but it may take time.  I ask that all who recently submitted names to please bear with me.  I will inform you and the Group as soon as the names are online and viewable.

We will still be accepting new submissions during this hopefully short "down" time, so please do not hesitate to send in new names.  As usual, the Memorial Wall may be viewed here:

Hi Stefan!

I'd already referred Krystyna to the ShtetlSeeker, but I read your response to her and was interested in the comments you made about the Hoover Institution holding Amnesty Certificates. Do they have these for most families/individuals who were deported to, and released from, Siberia? I've no idea where my father's family were sent to. Perhaps these could tell me and how can copies be obtained.

Hi All!

Not everyone seems to know about the Jewishgen Shtetl(town/village) Seeker
and the Mormon, Family History websites. These are two excellent referrence
tools.

To find the location of a village/town go to
www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/ Click on 'search for towns by name'. You
can select exact spelling or soundex system(try both), and also select
individual country or all countries. When the list is brought up click on
the given co-ordinates.

The Mormon's have filmed millions of Parish records from all over the world.
These can be ordered (in person)through a local Mormon( Jesus Christ of
Latterday Saints) Church, Family History Library, and you can arrange to go
and view/search them. To find if they have filmed in the known Parish go to
www.familysearch.org Select 'search' then 'Family History Library
Catalogue'. Then go on to 'Place Search' to find if the Parish has been
filmed. If it has, details of some villages/towns covered are given.

Good Luck to everyone searching these for the first time.

Ken Fedzin.

Dear Group,
The wonderful book by authors Lynn Olson and Stanley Cloud entitled,
A Question of Honor in the US and For Your Freedom and Ours
elsewhere, can be purchased on amazon.com at significantly reduced
rates. In the US the book sells for $27+. I purchased it for
$13.00 with tax and shipping. The book is a must read and should be
given as a Christmas present to love ones. Additionally it should
be purchased and presented to local libraries for the general public
to know of the plight of Poles during WWII and how they were
cynically sold out by their allies.
Take care,

Hallo Stefan,

I got pleasantly surprised by your email.

Indeed, I am, like yourself, a solid rock of Polish stock - flesh, blood and
soul. Osadnika syn. Both, my "Lwowianka" wife and I (Wolyniak) went to the
"Afrykan" get together in Wroclaw, September gone. From there, we went to
the Shrine of Our Lady in Czestochowa to thank Her for all the graces
bestowed upon us during the troubled years; 10.02/1940, Swierdlowska Oblast,
1942, Tehran, Karachi, Mombassa, Nairobi, Masindi 1942-1948.

[...]

Yes, please count me in. I'd be delighted to join you in the Kresy-Siberia
Group. I could contribute to the Group with my memoirs. Our daughter,
Teresa, one of our three children, convinced me to write our life story.
That's why I wrote a book called "Human Traces", which needs editing and
revising, but I did publish some extracts in different papers and magazines.
I, also, write poetry, when I get inspiration and time. I'll gladly exchange
some of my stories with those from you and others.

Count me in.

Best wishes and regards, Witold Szymanski

Helena,

The Hoover Institution, on the grounds of the Stanford University campus, archives the Polish "Ministerstwo Informacji i Dokumentacji" (MID) collection. This introduction to the collection by Maciej Siekierski describes the origin of these records:

"The MID was the main information and propaganda unit of the Polish Government in Exile. One of its units, the Research Section headed by Wiktor Sukiennicki was assigned the task of systematically reviewing and summarizing the testimonies of former Polish prisoners and deportees to Soviet Russia with a view to document the entry of the Red Army into Poland, the first weeks of Soviet occupation, the October 1939 Śelections,ą and the consequent sovietization of the occupied territories. Thousands of original Soviet camp release certificates, statements of survivors and detailed summaries of Soviet occupation compiled by the Research Section for every county of eastern Poland, make up about forty percent of the volume of the Ministryąs collection."

The nearly 13,500 certificates archived in the Hoover were issued by the NKVD after the Polish-Soviet agreement of July 1941, releasing Polish deportees from forced labor camps and other places of detention. They were turned in to the Polish authorities when the arrived at their posts.

There are also nearly 12,000 questionnaires ("ankiety"), statements and depositions of Polish deportees (as well as of some Polish prisoners of war) collected by the Bureau of Documents of the Polish Armed Forces (Referat Historyczny Polskich Sil Zbrojnych) after evacuation to the Middle East.

Regarding your family, there is a report from a Stefan Danilczyk, a forester from Kosów Poleski (woj. Polesie).  Also there are release certificates from a Bronislaw Danilczuk or Danilczyk (son of Wasil) born in 1912 in Ladzkie Szlacheckie, (woj. Stanislawowskie) and a Wiktor Danilczuk, (son of Feliks) born in 1920 in Sverdlovsk.

Any relations?

Hi Linder!
I don't live in UK but in Poland. I had some problems to contact with MOD but one of our K-S members sent their new address and I think it woun't be a problem this time. I know I have to send my request in special form and I have to prove my kinship. All is understandable. I have only one problem. Nobody in my family knows when my grandfather was really born- he was changing his birthday date to avoid compulsory service in Wehrmacht, and he changed it during the WWII few times, too. I wander if he was sure for himself when was his real birthday? I hope MOD won't reject my request when I'll write  different date from that one in their record.

Cheers!

Irene,

The LDS library has fairly complete Catholic Church records for Zdzieciol and surrounding villages for 1866 to 1890.  These are found in the Slonim deanery. The marriage records are especially valuable, since they often give the parents of the bride and groom.  If you would like the film numbers, let me know.  The records are in handwritten Russian, unfortunately, including family names. My heart sank when I saw the first saw them.  They looked like a child's drawing of the ocean. But you can work around that and even translate a bit, including most family names, some villages, and dates, using an alphabet guide to 19th Century Russian and a Langenscheidt pocket Russian dictionary.  The indexes are incomplete, but the format for the records makes it easy to scan family names quickly, once you know what the family and village names look like in the Russian alphabet.  These records were a goldmine for me for 100+ relatives, and 2-3 generations of two extended families.

Excellent photos are available, courtesy of  Tomek Wisniewski, at www.aforgottenodyssey.com.

Excellent inexpensive maps from the 1930s are available from the Library of Congress.

Slownik Geograficzny Krolestwa Polskiego has entries, in Polish, for Zdzieciol and surrounding villages from the late 19th Century.  Also, Skorowidz Miejscowosci Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej has aggregated census data, in Polish and without individual names, from the early 1920s.  It breaks down population data by religion, ethnicity, and village.  Both of these sources are available from the LDS Library. The latter is easy to decipher with a Polish dictionary, while the former is tough for those not fluent in Polish.  A guide is available, however, from the Polish Genealogical Society of America (www.pgsa.org).

Hope this helps,

Tom Sajwaj

Mary,
A good book from a woman's perspective is "Just Say a Hail Mary" The story
of Maria and Jedrzej Giertych by Barbara O'Driscoll ISBN 0953515400
Published by the author
175 Carlingford Road
London N.15 3ET
The author describes life before the war, survival during the war and
relocation afterwards in England. Much of this concerns itself with Maria's
experiences as she cared for the children and elderly women she was left
alone with, and her concern for the survival of various family members(over
600 pages)

Hello,

I have found this group to be such a wonderful, supportive source! I so look forward to reading everyone's emails.

I have recently uncovered some of my father's records.

I understand I should contact the ministry for definitives, but is there anything I can learn from reading these? I have his army card - can I identify which branch he was in?

I also have his marriage certificate. I can not read all- but :Niedawrade- Krakow.
Are there any other clues I can look for on these documents?
I also have a copy of someone's birth certificate other than my father's - I think his sister's daughter. Perhaps the name on here can help some others?Dziadura, Maria 9/15/49
Our last name is Wosko.

This is not entirely true.  There is post in and out of the UK!  There are some post boxes sealed in the London area and some business mail is affected BUT there are talks on at the moment to try to reach a satisfactory conclusion.  It DOES NOT take 4 - 6 weeks to clear backlogs.  Please try to keep a sense of proportion about this, thanks.  There is no need not to send mail to the MOD.

Thanks

Linder sends this update in reference to requests to the UK Minsitry of Defense.

URGENT MESSAGE TO GO ON K-S PLEASE

NO POST MOVING IN UK, because of 'union strike' about wages. Post collection boxes sealed by Post Office for the first time in 20 years. Nothing out of/into UK - don't send anything, don't expect any replies group!
Usually, 4-6 weeks to clear backlog when over, but we just don't know about this time. Christmas coming too!
Still, on the bright side, we needn't buy Xmas card stamps..

Linder

Please welcome Jalaine Madura to the group.

Jalaine, thanks for the feedback.  The website has been a group effort, and is especially a credit to our consecutive webmasters Steve Roy, Halina Szulakowska and Ron Bereznicki.

You can spot Wolpa on the map in Belarus at the following link (spelled VOUPA now).
http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?latlongtype=decimal&latitude=53.3667&longitude=24.3667

Also look at http://www.belarusguide.com/cities/cities-voupa.html and http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/volpa/volpa-main.html

This will give you a start on where it is and surrounding towns and centres.  If you need more info, let me know.

Regards
Stefan Wisniowski

Dear Mr. Wisniowski:

The Forgotten Odyssey web site is excellent!  I have only started studying it but am very impressed with how well it is put together and how comprehensive it is. This is very important for bringing the tragedy of this time into the public eye.

As I begin my research, may I ask one question:  my grandparents' family was from Wolpa and I have located the jpg image in the album, but I am having difficulty determining the right province or geographic subdistrict for further research.  Could you help, or direct me to the right place to ask?

Many thanks, and thank you again for this website and the great care you and others have obviously taken in preparing it.

Jalaine Madura
