Hi people,

This is my question & reply from Alexander. Now I know what to try next!

Could I ask for anyone's help/suggestions in trying to find out any possible 'route' dad may have taken from Lwow [captured by Russian's] to ISDUD where he enlisted in Anders-Sikorski Polsh Army?.

Dear Linder,
Unfortunately, your father Michal Stachnik does not appear in the database "Polish
citizens deported to Arkhangelsk region (1940-1941)" disposed by our Polish
Committee of the "Memorial" Society, as well as no one with the surname Stachnik at all or Putko or Kurzynski.

May be, your father was deported to the other region, not Arkhangelsk?

The other possibility is that he might be rather arrested, sentenced and imprisoned in one of the penal "corrective labour camp" (of GULAG's system) instead of being deported (the term of deportation in its strict meaning has to be applied only to the forced expulsion). But we have no database on the imprisoned Poles except the database "Poles and Polish citizens imprisoned in camps of Vorkuta region (1939-1956)". I have made sure that your father as well as Jan Putko and Bronislav Kurzynski are not listed in the "Vorkuta database".

In such a situation the only way is to make the requests to the archives of Internal Affairs Office of Arkhangelsk region (if the camp was really located in this region) or to the Main Informational Center of Russian Internal Affairs Ministry (but we may have some difficulties with the request to the Ministry). Our Polish Committee can make these requests on your behalf, but we need the letter signed by you with your ask to Polish Committe and the personal data of your father. Such a letter is necessary because it is obligatory for us to attach the paper copy of it to each our request to archives.
Our address is:

Polish Committee of the "Memorial" Society,
Russia, 103051 Moscow, Malyi Karetnyi Pereulok 12

Finally, I have to notice that the waiting for answer of archives is usually rather long, lasting several months.
Sincerely yours - Alexander Gur'yanov, member of the Polish Committee of the "Memorial" Society

Question;  From Linder Stachnik in England

    Dear Alexander,

I am a member of the 'Kresy-Siberia' list and have been following your good work for us on the list. When you have the time, would you be kind enough to take a look and see if you have any details of my father? For this I would be very grateful.

    Michal Stachnik
    Born; 18th July 1914
    At; Nachaczow, Jaworow, Lwow, Poland
    Farmer before 1939
    Parents; Michal [also] & Katarzyna
    Roman Catholic
Deported to 'Former USSR' in 1940
Released from 'camp' to join Anders-Sikorski Army
Enlisted - 05-03-1942 at ISDUD [Palestine?]
known to have at least one brother JAN/JOHN, but I believe he was one of 4/6 siblings.
Came to England in 1946 with JAN PUTKO and BRONISLAW KURZINSKI, I understand they were all together in 'camps'. ARKHANGLSK CAMP has been mentioned by our family?

I'm sorry that I have no other information than this, from dad's Polish Army War Records from London.

    Thank you for your time

    Linder Ladbrooke [Stachnik]

Thanks Stefan
Linder

Linder,
The mystery to me is how enlisted in Isdud (which is a village in Palestine) on 3 May 1942 (how could it be 5 March if the army was still in the USSR?).  If this is so,  how could he have made his way out of Russia (probably around 26 March 1942) if he was not already in the army, unless his brother or another family member was already enrolled - as I believe that it was only civilians who were family members of soldiers or orphans who were allowed out with the army in March '42. He was nearly 28 years old then, so should have been eligible to enlist in Soviet Russia...

Sorry, more questions for our experts...

Hello Mohammad
Thank you for your message about Isdud in 1942.
You musty have been a young man then!

As you may know, the Polish Army was attached to the British 8th Army.
Your recollection about Polish camps at Barbara accords with the
recollections many of our families have of being there (including my own
father).

It may be possible that Linder's father enlisted at the British camp for the
Polish Army. Or perhaps the documents were recorded at Isdud.

Linder did you ever find out more about this?

Remember I got a little map that Margaret [MOD] drew for me? Sent you a
copy, with the front cover of that book they use all the time + some copied
pages from that book, all sabout ISDUD? No, buried in your piles to stuff to
be filed?, like me?
Thing is, I can't openly say where I got it, anyway, Bogdan never did get
round to giving me the short Eng version of what it says, but, it's supposed
to be all about the men enlsting and the routes most took to get there - I
can't read Polish! I can send again if your 'piles' are too high?

Another subject; other folk's beside you, suspect my dad's War Records are
in the wrong order. The MOD doesn't type anything out until they've got the
£25.00, so, it's poss that they just got it in the wrong order, but I can't
ask Margaret MOD until I know what's wrong with them. Have you still got a
copy to look at, or shall I type those bits out? I think it looks like he
went back on himself. Would you take a look when you're on the night shift
please? Perhaps then, it will help the fellow above and me too?
