Subject: Book "Navies in Exile" by A S Divine

Dear group,

For those interested in the Polish Navy I recently bought the book recommended
to me on the forum:

"Navies in Exile" by A S Divine, published in 1944 by John Murray Publishers,
London.

Whilst there is only one chapter devoted to the Polish Navy it is incredibly
in-depth and provides some wonderful first-hand accounts. The author was a
sailor/officer with the British Navy and many of the accounts are his own
testimony.

My father servced on ORP Garland so I follow her with interest. This is a bit
off-topic but I am including a passage about an incident when Garland was on
convoy to Murmansk in May 1942. It's a great example of the Polish fighting
spirit.

Incidentally, from October 1942 approximately 800 new recruits to the Polish
Navy came via Russia / Persia:

"Toward the end of May 1942 (Garland took part in the escorting of a convoy to
Murmansk. In the words of the British Admiralty communique,

'The passage of this convoy was made in the face of U-boat attacks and heavy and
determined air attacks by bombers, dive-bombers and torpedo-carrying aircraft,
which were delivered almost continuously for five days and nights. Nevertheless
the convoy reached its destination with comparitively small losses'.

Garland's anti-aircraft fire throughout this time, on the statements of British
officers who were present at the action, was magnificent. Incessant attacks by
torpedo-carrying aircraft were held off by her barrage fire, and the aircraft
were compelled to drop their torpedoes at non-effective range.

On the fourth day Garland seemed to be singled out for terrific attacks, but,
for most of the day, neither bombs nor machine-gun fire hit her. Towards the
close of that day, however, a Junkers 88, diving through a curtain of fire,
dropped a stick of four bombs close alongside. Garland disappeared in a wall of
water and of smoke.
The commanding officers of one of the British escort vessels said 'When I saw
this happen, I said to my officers, "That's finished the Poles; what a tragedy;
they fought so magnificently". But I didn't have time to finish what I was
saying, as out from behind a wall of smoke and water emerged Garland, still
firing'.

Garland was not out of action, but she was badly damaged. Her hull and
superstructure were riddled with metal from high-fragmentation anti-personnel
bombs. Whole gun crews had been wiped out. Her decks were covered with dead and
dying. Yet she never ceased firing. Her Gunnery Officer, himself wounded,
organised crews of artificers and cooks to keep the guns in action. The
Paymaster, mortally wounded, handed over his keys to a colleague before he died.
One of her wounded, lying where he had been dragged to precarious safety, wrote
on the white paint-work above him "Poland - how sweet it is to die for thee!".

For eleven hours after that frantic moment Garland fought on. Towards morning
she was detached to try to get her wounded into Murmansk. On the way she sighted
a German submarine on the surface and attempted to engage it, but she could make
only 20 knots on her damaged engines, and the submarine escaped on the surface.
... For 32 hours her doctor, operating on the wardroom table, patched up the
wounded. With half her crew banaged and out of action, the fighting Garland came
into Murmanks.
She lived to fight again. "

Thank you for all the wonderful memories and stories from Pahlevi. I am adding
this transcript from the Survivor Testimony of Frank Kustra (Canberra,
Australia). You can see his full story in the new exhibition on the Virtual
Museum, People of the Polish Second Corps:

http://kresy-siberia.org/people-of-the-polish-second-corps/all-people/kustra-fra\
nek/

It is a direct transcript from Frank's wonderful interview so please read it
with a Polish accent :)

He is a wonderful storyteller and there are lots of excerpts in the link above.

"We embarked for Iran (from port Kras.). My brother was suffering from typhus
and the Polish Doctor told him "you will never get across the Caspian Sea to
Iran. It is very rough and they are not passenger ships. They are fishing
boats". And my brother said to me and the Doctor, "my brother is going. I know I
might die but at least I will die in a free country, not this land here". So
the Doctor said "I'm not advising you but if that is your wish, then you will
go". He didn't make it. When we arrived in Pahlevi I couldn't find my brother
and I myself was suffering at that time from malaria which I got on the cotton
fields (there was a lot of mosquitoes there), bad malaria.

When I landed they sent me to Pahlevi hospital and this hospital couldn't cope
with so many sick people. I remember first time I saw an Australian soldier
because he wore a big hat. Later on I found out that they volunteered to fly the
ambulances from Palestine to Iran to help evacuate the Polish Army and the sick
people. When I was in Canberra I went to the Museum and asked them … yes they
were there and volunteered. This ambulance with the Australian driver took me to
Tehran (it was called the King's Hospital) but at that time I was unconscious.

When I woke up in the hospital and I saw white walls and music playing and I had
PJs on and I said to myself "I am dead, this is heaven, I must have died" and
then I saw 2 Iranian sisters. I was watching them to see whether they had any
wings! I called them over but I couldn't understand them and I said to myself "I
wonder what language they speak in heaven". But they said hold on, hold on and
they brought a Polish sister. I said "where am I sister? Am I still alive? What
happened to me? I've got pjs on and I haven't had these since I left Poland".
All my head was shaved and I was all clean, I was washed. I was unconscious and
I didn't know what happened to me but I was very happy. She says "this is not
heaven, you are not dead, but you have been very sick and you have passed and
when you feel better we are going to send you Kirkuck in Iraq. There is a Polish
Army station there. There is a hospital there and they will look after you". So
after a few weeks I went to the hospital in Tehran.

They put a convoy of trucks with Polish soldiers who were going to Iraq so they
took me and some other people who were also in the hospital and off we went. But
some funny things happened there. The soviets occupied a part of Iran as well
and on the border of Iran the soviet soldiers that were on the border, tossed
their rifles into the bush and shout "I am Polish, I am Polish, take me with
you". So we took them in and dressed them in Polish uniform in case there is
another check-point and they came with us those Russians, they were so happy.
They were kissing us "freedom, freedom!"

Kind regards

Quote - Some personalities mentioned in the list you can find additional information in "The Book of Remembrance of the Victims of Political Repression" , published in various regions of Russia, on the other - in the directory "Who led the NKVD" - many security officers were also on the list along with their victims.

LIST OF VICTIMS OF POLITICAL REPRESSION

One of the main tasks of the "Memorial" has always considered the establishment of the names of all the victims of political repression, and the publication of these names.

Began in 1988-89. publication in the media of lists of victims of Soviet repression of the early 1990's. almost ceased. In many (but unfortunately not all) regions have started to prepare - usually at the initiative of the "Memorial" and with his participation - the "Book of Memory" : the special edition, which contains not only names, but also brief biographies of victims, and sometimes even photos.

By the end of 2008, published in the former USSR books contain only about 2 million names, while even according to official data, only to Stalin's death, and only in cases of the Authority of the Cheka-MGB had been convicted of at least 4 million people; If we consider the dispossessed, deported, sent, the total number of victims of terror is more than 12 million.

But even these are not full of tiny details are published and copies are available only in a few major libraries.

Since 1998, the "Memorial" has been working to integrate information about the victims of political terror of memory books and more from unpublished sources into a single database.

October 30, 2006 we have placed on our server list including almost half a million names - all of this content, the third edition of the disc "The victims of political terror in the USSR."

On October 30, 2008 updated resource - list now includes about 2.7 million names. This amended the 4th edition CD "Victims of Political Terror in the USSR", which was released a year ago.

In addition, some of these names are on our server
separate lists by region

Warning some photos may cause distress.

Katyn. Belarusian list

In 1994, the Security Service of Ukraine has been found and handed over to Poland, the so-called "Ukrainian Katyn list" document, which contained the names of 3,435 Polish citizens who were shot in the NKVD of the USSR. Most Polish and Belarusian researchers Stalinist crimes believe that there must be a similar "Belarusian Katyn list", which contains the names of about four thousand Polish citizens who were shot in the BSSR.

Janusz,

Welcome. My grandfather was also interned in Lithuania on the same date. I
have a photo of a group of mem in the Photos section here and I am able only to
identify two people in it. You never know, you may find your grandfather in
that picture.

Hi Carol, Oh sorry :(

I haven't used dropbox before so maybe it only lets one person per email access
them? I have sent you the link direct to your email.

If anyone else would like to see the photographs and cannot access them - I'm
sorry I'll try to fix the link. Please email me and I will send you the link

I wonder where your father got the photos?
I guess my grandfather would not be able to attend those gatherings with living in such a small town in Lancashire. There seemed to be a lot of Poles that lived there. I remember being taken to various Polish clubs as a child. When he died those that were left attended his funeral.
It is only during the last couple of years that I thought about trying to find some information. After my mother died I had a few photos and some religious pictures he carried around throughout the war years and the small amount of information she told me.
I am happy to have found this group and the help of some of the missing pieces.
Thank you all for that.

German propaganda or real event?  Original film footage of 1943

It seems that my dad's army photos are at the Sikorski museum so I'm not sure
what is there. I've taken home one album (I was in London a couple of weeks ago)
but haven't had time to look at it, there are some army photos in it. I would
assume that he collected photos from his army buddies to include in the book and
then gave them back.
I also have an exercise book he used as a diary from his scout days before the
war, handwritten with tiny, tiny photos - so cute.

Hi Carol, Oh sorry :(

I haven't used dropbox before so maybe it only lets one person per email access them? I have sent you the link direct to your email.

If anyone else would like to see the photographs and cannot access them - I'm sorry I'll try to fix the link. Please email me and I will send you the link directly.

Kind regards

It seems that my dad's army photos are at the Sikorski museum so I'm not sure what is there. I've taken home one album (I was in London a couple of weeks ago) but haven't had time to look at it, there are some army photos in it. I would assume that he collected photos from his army buddies to include in the book and then gave them back.
I also have an exercise book he used as a diary from his scout days before the war, handwritten with tiny, tiny photos - so cute.

Alas, when I click on that link, all I get is a request to create an
account, and when I do that, I don't see anything relevant. When I put
Bykownia & Poland in the search box, I get No Results Found. Same for

German propaganda or real event?  Original film footage of 1943

December 1943. Descheg Monatsschau No. 22.Translation by LustitiaPax. About 600 Polish soldiers from the Polish 1st Tadeusz Kościuszko Infantry Division (which was the Berling Army in service of the Soviets) who succeeded in fleeing from the Bolsheviks and deserting to the German Wehrmacht side of the Eastern front, deep into Axis-occupied Soviet territory. A commission of Polish and German journalists and authors visit the military camp, and are convinced of the immaculate housing, care and nutrition offered to the Poles. Views of soup provided to the Polish deserters who fled the forces of Bolshevism. For the first time after many years (under Soviet atheism), the first Holy Mass in the field offered for these Poles. Thanks Anna, if 800 recruits to the Polish Navy came via Russia-Persia that accounts for roughly one third or at least one quarter of all navy personnel (the two figures I’ve read of naval personnel were 2500 and 3200).

I wonder if this helps the executive team of Kresy-Siberia Virtual Museum decide whether to set up a new bespoke room in the website for Navy people and photos. Perhaps the present Polish Navy or other organisation could fund or sponsor such a new project?

Warm regards
Martin

Hi Anna,

I'd love to see your photos, but don't wish to download DropBox. Is there any
way you can send a link to me privately maybe?

Hi Krystyna, oh no not at all - I think that it's probably just the program will
only let one person open the folder so my apologies. I have not done dropbox
before. I am just sending the link on directly.
Thanks so much - it was an amazing experience.
Kind regards

Hi Martin,

I would love to have a Polish Navy exhibition/gallery in KSVM... it is
definately a personal passion and objective.

Unfortunately we are looking at a very lean funding year for 2013 (nothing so
far from MSZ and the Senate in Poland who we have traditionally relied upon for
the bulk of our grants).

We are exploring alternative avenues of funding and will also be relying upon
member donations to keep us afloat for 2013... but if anyone has any suggestions
or would like to help with fundraising we would love the assistance.

I don't know if there is a Ministry of Defence/Polish Navy avenue for funding
such a project but I will look into it.

Kind regards,
Anna Pacewicz
