Dear Lucyna and the family of Tadeusz Kryzstek, the loss is great, may he rest in peace and the members who knew Tadeusz and had contact that honour will always stay with highest respect in their and our memory forever.

Do you know who has taken over his lifes’ work of keeping the list up to date, recording and researching further information to benefit those who are searching?

Warmest wishes

We just heard on the internet grapevine  that Tadeusz Krzystek – the Sibirak  air force veteran who maintained the Polish air force list has passed on

At the age of 93 – it was a matter of time

But I am in shock

I had the great pleasure in meeting him  and had my last email contact with him 2 days ago

Hello Tracy

I travelled to Belarus in September of last year from London but with my sister from Australia.  (My NZ sister could not make it).  We are Scottish.

We had a wonderful time and the people were as kind as they could be.

We crossed the border in the wonderful Bialowieza forest, by foot.  The Belarusian guards were brilliant, the Polish guards were a disgrace and had it been the same ones on my return I would have made my thoughts known (back on European soil!!!).

The border controls are generally trying to prevent cigarettes and fuel being shipped over.  Hire cars get an extraordinary amount of investigation and I would say not worth the trouble.  The roads I travelled on in Belarus were quiet but much better than the Polish roads.

USD is king currency

I would say Russian and Polish is useful depending on the age of the people you speak with.  The young do not speak Polish.

You do need someone to read the grave stones.  For example, my name is Kuzmicki.  Because my Grandparents are in the same grave, the stone reads Jan and Ola Kuzmiccy.  I would not have recognised this as my family name without being told.

In fact there are many different endings to your name depending on a number of factors and everyone will have a Christened name and the name they used.

You are probably much more knowledgeable.

The people, the food and the kindness was extraordinary.

Like you, I was fortunate enough to find my family and roots only recently, hence my trip.  I am close friends with a priest there now so if you have any questions I can ask him for you.  I have already asked him if he knows your local priest as that can help. You may be Orthodox.  The local Girls (in their 80’s and 90’s) are your best source of knowledge as they will know everyone in the graveyard and the history of your family.  Undoubtedly they will still attend church as it is the mainstay of the community.   Our Girls were overwhelmingly wonderful.

If you want to have a chat about my experience I am happy to speak with you.  Send me a direct email.

Good Luck.  Enjoy the vodka!!!

Virginia

Hello there Stan,

I can understand your concern! The place we wish to travel to is very tiny - virtually unpopulated, and is located in the Wilno area - now Belarus. The nearest main city happens to be Vilnius in Lithuania - Radizule is 50 km away across the border to the East of Vilnius.

My cousin Mary-Anne Morgan visited Radizule four years ago, and we have google map coordinates plus Mary-Anne's handwritten map. I now wish to make the same trip and have been advised that we are best to hire a driver and car as obviously no buses are available, and as you quite rightly point out, the Belarussian authoriies can be a bit sticky!

We plan to base our stay from Vilnius in Lithuania, and will probably only need to be in Belarus for a day.

One more thing, I think you will have to do your visas by post as there is not a Belarusian Embassy in NZ or Australia so don’t leave it too late to get you passport back.

Hello,

Through the assistance of the Kresy Siberia group, I have been fortunate in being on a wonderful journey of discovery - finding out about my Polish heritage, including meeting up with family members (aunts and cousins) living right here in New Zealand. I now wish to travel over to Lithuania and Belarus in June this year in in order to visit my father's birthplace.

The place my father is from is the small village of Radizule which is located in the province of Hrodzyenskaya Voblasts' in Belarus. We are thinking of making Vilnius our main stop off as this is the nearest main city.

I would be grateful of anyone has an travel advice for me, as it is proving somewhat challenging for the travel companies I have been in contact with to even locate the place!

Has anyone got any advice on how to find a car with driver? Unfortunately, neither my partner or I speak any Polish or Russian, and so we will require someone who can speak English.

I am hoping to also try to locate the church and cemetery in Radizule. I am not sure if it even exists.

Any advice on accommodation also close to Radizule would also be appreciated.

"The book will be available in the USA and Canada in a few months and in
Australia in the next few weeks. It won’t be available in India at all. If
you have people overseas that want to buy it we recommend the Book

I have just come back from Friday's event of "Who Do You Think You Are? Live" in Olympia and felt compelled to write to you all to say what a wonderful experience it was.  If you are planning to go, then you won't be disappointed and, for those of you who are still undecided, I can highly recommend it.  Please don't miss the opportunity.

I was delighted to meet Halik Kochanowski and Zosia and Jurek Biegus and to buy signed copies of their books: 'The Eagle Unbowed' and 'Polish Resettlement Camps in England and Wales 1946-1969', respectively.

The day flew by.  As well as having the opportunity to meet up with UK members, those already known and familiar and those known only through the forum, the day offered opportunities to buy books and other Kresy-Siberia memorabilia, catch up with the latest developments but, more importantly, to meet with many, many individuals curious about some inexplicable part of their background or past, about a father now long-deceased, who had refused to speak of the war years, about another father who relates snapshots of experiences which are disjointed and incoherent.

Not knowing what to expect, I was surprised to find myself kept busy chatting to strangers and doing my best to fill in the missing pieces to their life's jigsaw or, at the very least, to point them in the right direction which very often quite simply meant the Kresy-Siberia website, Hoover, Karta, as well as the Sikorski Museaum, the MOD etc. etc.  They all appeared to be very grateful for any information or advice they were given.

Of course, it goes without saying that this event would not have taken place without the determination, hard work and commitment of Eva and Mirka and their team of very active UK members.  My sincere thanks to them all.

Dear UK Members,

Next week on Friday 22-Sunday 24 February K-S (UK) will be exhibiting at the Who Do You Think You Are Live show in Olympia, London (see our listing on www.whodoyouthinkyouarelive.com).

I am attaching below a copy of our English version press release which is being sent to a number of Polish and English newspapers and magazines in the UK and also in Poland and I would be extremely grateful if you could please pass the message around to your contacts and circulate it within your local Polish/English community, parish church, school, SPK or other relevant group or organisation that may be interested and encourage people to come and see us at stand No. 74/75 in the new 'Migration Zone'.  It would be particularly good to see more of our London members at this event and I hope that you will make a big effort to come and support us.

On Friday 22 February at 11.30 am we will be presenting a workshop talk on Polish Resettlement Camps in the UK and on the day British historian Halik Kochanski will be signing copies of her new book The Eagle Unbowed.  We will also have representatives attending throughout the 3-days from some of the major UK Polish organisations such as the London Embassy/Consulate, SPK HQ, as well as our WW2 veterans/survivors.

The press and media will be present throughout the event so make sure you don't miss out on this memorable event.

Opening times are:
Friday 22 February - 10.00am-6.30pm
Saturday 23 February - 9.30am-5.30pm
Sunday 24 February - 9.30am-4.30pm

Please contact me directly if you are able to help with the manning of our stand or if you can help us in any other way.

Looking forward to seeing you all there and to a great event!
Best regards.

Dear Basia

Writing this report and sharing it with other members is of the highest importance, allowing us to know and be involved, even from a distance of meeting of same people and by the sounds of it, KS work is only beginning and the group will grow each year.  Thank you.

Lenarda, Australia

Thank you for this link.
I was in a couple of resettlement camps, 10 years in Fairford and almost 2 more in Daglingworth.
It must have been terribly difficult for my parents, but for my age group, as kids, it was the only thing we knew.

Dear  Frances, the pilots of Polish special squadron 1586 are not forget to you, at least here in Puglia. We have found their history, their missions of courage in order to carry the aids to Warsaw, some of they are buried in the Polish military cemetary of Casamassima and have had the pleasure and the honor to tell their history to the boys of the Polish schools of Rome that have come in visit.
I would want to ask to you if you can write something to me on your father, what you know, for me is an honor to be able to insert it in my book in preparation and also in my exibition.

Hello Anna

One group of Forgotten Heroes are those brave men in Polish Special Duties Squadron 1586 who flew supplies into Warsaw during the Warsaw Uprising from August 1 1944. After a long journey at night from Brindisi, Italy, they had to fly at heights of only 300 meters over Warsaw to drop their supplies, risking attack by Nazis from ground and air.
Many attacks occurred along the route from Brindisi by the German night fighters - and and many crews were shot down, some lucky enough to escape. Others were either incarcerated by the Nazis or tragically lost their lives.

In my father's crew of seven there were four men who had been arrested/deported to USSR, my own father included. After being released from labour camps under 'amnesty' they joined the Polish Air Force to fight for their homeland. Tragically they were shot down on their fifth mission to Warsaw - none of the crew survived.

I would like to know of any AK/Partisan "heroes" from Kresy, any Polish citizens who helped to save Jewish people during the German occupation of Kresy etc Also Polish Airforce "Aces" from the Battle of Britain.

Hello Lucyna
I have looked at every list ever posted and have never found my parents, who I believe arrive separately!
I am in New Zealand with family, but will look up exact dates of arrival in notes I have and try from that perspective

Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make the Kresy-Siberia stall at the Who Do You Think You Are exhibition at London's Olympia such a success.

Some great books, videos and cups on offer and it was really nice to meet everybody. So many stories to tell.

I look forward to the next non-virtual meet-up!

Best

Hi

While at the WDYTYA exhibition at London's Olympia various people mentioned a Siberia medal. It was mentioned there was a link to the application document somewhere on the museum site or KS yahoo groups. I can't find it. Can anyone help?

Thanks

I have just come across the record on 'Find my Past' archived records of a Maria Jachimiak marriage in Leek, Staffordshire to a Maksymilian Kopec in 1949. I would very much like to know more about Maria as perhaps she is related to me? Can any member provide some more information on this, do we have any KS members who are part of this Kopec family?

Best regards,
Julie (Jachimiak) Sheppard
