SPECIAL NOTICE TO MEMBERS OF THE KRESY-SIBERIA GROUP

It is with heavy heart that I write this special message in memory
of group member Chris Gladun, who died earlier this month in
Toronto at the young age of 52, as a result of the brain tumour he
was battling for the past year. On behalf of the members of the
Kresy-Siberia Group, our deepest condolences go to Chris' wife,
Gail Tedford, and to all of his family.

I would like to take this opportunity to pay a special tribute to
Chris, who was a founding member of the Kresy-Siberia Group
in September 2001, and to the important contributions he has
made to our cause.

I first "met" Chris over the internet two years ago, when I found
his website http://www.polandsholocaust.org - which built on his
earlier feature article on "Poland's Holocaust" in the Toronto Star.
Chris was a pillar of strength in documenting and propagating
knowledge in the West of the Soviet genocide of the Polish
nation during World War 2.

Chris was born in 1951 in Paddington Hospital in England. This
is what his mother wrote about him at the time, shortly before his
family emigrated to Canada:

"Wonderful News! On the 17th of April, 1951, at sunrise our heir
to the throne saw the light of day! He brought Spring with him--it's
now the third day that the sun is shining and rain isn't falling. The
English are overjoyed, as all of England is underwater and
disaster was hanging over the country. Thrice Bless our heir to
the throne!

In truth our Jacek doesn't make much of all this. He expressed
his attitude to the world in the following way. First of all he
naturally screamed in terror; but later after he was washed and
placed beside me (still on the operating table) he looked around
and (I swear it!) let out three bubbles of saliva from his little
mouth, which meant: "I spit on the world and everyone here!"
Then for good luck, he gave a mighty sneeze. I wished him all
the best, and in this manner we entered a new life."

Indeed, Chris came from a remarkable family. His mother,
Janina Sulkowska-Gladun, joined the Polish underground in
1939 to fight the Soviets and Nazis, for which she was tortured by
the NKVD and deported to the Gulag. She dedicated her life to
finding her loved ones and honouring their memory, including
authoring the book "Wartime Memoirs, 1939-1949, published in
Warsaw, 1998.

Chris' father, Leon Gladun, was one of only 448 who survived the
murder of 27,000 Polish POW's in Katyn and other places, on
Stalin's orders, in one of the worst war crimes ever recorded. He
went on to fight the Germans in Italy, and kept a diary of his
wartime years from the 1939 Blitzkreig to V-E Day in 1945.
Though Leon died in 1973, the material in his diary is being
used as evidence by the Commission for the Investigation of
Crimes against the Polish Nation, in Warsaw.

With this background, Chris, a teacher and journalist based in
Toronto, Canada, spent years translating and researching his
family dairies, letters and documents, as well as conducting
interviews with relatives and survivors. As well as his writings
and his website, Chris also recently worked with Michael
Adamski as researcher and narrator on the film "Rescue from
Death in Siberia".

Chris dedicated all this work to his parents and to Poles
everywhere, as well as to Ukrainians, Balts, Russians, Jews and
countless others who suffered under Nazism and Communism.
His hope was that the material he presented would expand
knowledge of and interest about Poland and Poles during World
War Two, and that it would serve as an educational tool for both
laymen and historians to counteract deniers of the holocausts
perpetrated by both Hitler and Stalin.

Though Chris has been taken away from us, his work lives on in
his writings and in his website. We pay tribute to Chris as a
human being, a true son of Poland, and an everlasting
inspiration to us all.

Please  give  a warm welcome  to Jakub . He says his family suffered enormously under both the German and Soviet invaders of Poland during WWII. One  of the relatives who managed  to  escape was his aunt Janina Sulkowska Gladun . Her route was  via Teheran, to India, and then to England. Eventually she settled in Canada ( St Catherines near Niagara Fall) Her son Jacek  made documentary recordings and had a big file of historical documentation. After he died (at 50) his work was submitted to a few Universities in the USA, including the  University of California. To see his work on line type his name and The Holocaust of the Poles. 
I have just now looked up Christopher Jacek Gladun.  We in the group know him as Chris Gladun who had been a member of our group until his early death  and  he has produced a most impressive body of works. See message 4723 form Stefan when Chris's passing was announced. 
   Lolek Gladun, Janina’s  husband was one of the few lucky Soviet prisoners who manage to escape from the Katyn massacre! Although he did not want to talk about this, at his funeral in Canada there  was an international ceremony. At the time of his death  the orthodox communist regime still governed Poland  and Jakub says the younger generation were completely taken surprised to learn of such things and the revelations  came as a shock to him.
Jakub is now trying to get some more information about his uncle Lolek Gladun the Sibirak and his history.  He would welcome any help the group could give him.

Stefan, thank you for posting this, as perhaps there are others like me, who do not have the skill to search through KS records and truly appreciate the reprint of your post for CHRIS GLADUN and now having Jakub with us will be an honour.

 

By reading all the information provided, I now understand more and have vindicated my assumptions that KS was and is a very special group because of its founders and Directors.

 

I am privileged to be part of such an honourable, respectful, educated group, with each of us having different skills and information to contribute, searching for our families, for truth and letting the world know of the very real injustice suffered by the Kresy people and to be informed that Chris was part of this beginning, is even more special.

 

Your explanation of how our funds and donations are used has made me aware of fragility and uniqueness of the information and material discovered about the Kresy people and if we do not grab it when available, then it will be lost forever.

 

Again thank you for your quick thinking and securing these valuable records. We have to be always on the lookout and have sufficient funds available, from donations of members and sponsors etc. to record and keep this information for our future and the future of our children and all who wish to research WWII and the Kresy people.

 

Kresy-Siberia group are a most special people, respected and honoured by all, with an amazing, yet horrific legacy to pass on to future generations so our loved ones lost will never be forgotten and we know who we are and where we come from.

Hello dear Lenarda,
 Finding your message, may you know the Leon Gladun record of both what he recorded and from ceremony of His  burial?
Although as I was told by his widowed wife, Janka Sulkowski Gladun, for his burial sombody from Australia arrived who is encounted for the only few who maned escape from Katyn. Who is/was? this Person? Is He til alive?
   More Q: do you know what happened to those refugees, who in 1940 managed  to survive fleeing via Japan. There were at least one hundred Poles... From what I found, few of them ended in Australia and New Zealand. But with the rest of them, and who were they?
Also, did Lithuania's gov. just after German's & Russian invasion to Kresy helped to our citizens? If it is true, in what number of individuals?

SPECIAL NOTICE TO MEMBERS OF THE KRESY-SIBERIA GROUP

It is with heavy heart that I write this special message in memory
of group member Chris Gladun, who died earlier this month in
Toronto at the young age of 52, as a result of the brain tumour he
was battling for the past year. On behalf of the members of the
Kresy-Siberia Group, our deepest condolences go to Chris' wife,
Gail Tedford, and to all of his family.

I would like to take this opportunity to pay a special tribute to
Chris, who was a founding member of the Kresy-Siberia Group
in September 2001, and to the important contributions he has
made to our cause.

I first "met" Chris over the internet two years ago, when I found
his website http://www.polandsholocaust.org - which built on his
earlier feature article on "Poland's Holocaust" in the Toronto Star.
Chris was a pillar of strength in documenting and propagating
knowledge in the West of the Soviet genocide of the Polish
nation during World War 2.

Chris was born in 1951 in Paddington Hospital in England. This
is what his mother wrote about him at the time, shortly before his
family emigrated to Canada:

"Wonderful News! On the 17th of April, 1951, at sunrise our heir
to the throne saw the light of day! He brought Spring with him--it's
now the third day that the sun is shining and rain isn't falling. The
English are overjoyed, as all of England is underwater and
disaster was hanging over the country. Thrice Bless our heir to
the throne!

In truth our Jacek doesn't make much of all this. He expressed
his attitude to the world in the following way. First of all he
naturally screamed in terror; but later after he was washed and
placed beside me (still on the operating table) he looked around
and (I swear it!) let out three bubbles of saliva from his little
mouth, which meant: "I spit on the world and everyone here!"
Then for good luck, he gave a mighty sneeze. I wished him all
the best, and in this manner we entered a new life."

Indeed, Chris came from a remarkable family. His mother,
Janina Sulkowska-Gladun, joined the Polish underground in
1939 to fight the Soviets and Nazis, for which she was tortured by
the NKVD and deported to the Gulag. She dedicated her life to
finding her loved ones and honouring their memory, including
authoring the book "Wartime Memoirs, 1939-1949, published in
Warsaw, 1998.

Chris' father, Leon Gladun, was one of only 448 who survived the
murder of 27,000 Polish POW's in Katyn and other places, on
Stalin's orders, in one of the worst war crimes ever recorded. He
went on to fight the Germans in Italy, and kept a diary of his
wartime years from the 1939 Blitzkreig to V-E Day in 1945.
Though Leon died in 1973, the material in his diary is being
used as evidence by the Commission for the Investigation of
Crimes against the Polish Nation, in Warsaw.

With this background, Chris, a teacher and journalist based in
Toronto, Canada, spent years translating and researching his
family dairies, letters and documents, as well as conducting
interviews with relatives and survivors. As well as his writings
and his website, Chris also recently worked with Michael
Adamski as researcher and narrator on the film "Rescue from
Death in Siberia".

Chris dedicated all this work to his parents and to Poles
everywhere, as well as to Ukrainians, Balts, Russians, Jews and
countless others who suffered under Nazism and Communism.
His hope was that the material he presented would expand
knowledge of and interest about Poland and Poles during World
War Two, and that it would serve as an educational tool for both
laymen and historians to counteract deniers of the holocausts
perpetrated by both Hitler and Stalin.

Though Chris has been taken away from us, his work lives on in
his writings and in his website. We pay tribute to Chris as a
human being, a true son of Poland, and an everlasting
inspiration to us all.

Please  give  a warm welcome  to Jakub . He says his family suffered enormously under both the German and Soviet invaders of Poland during WWII. One  of the relatives who managed  to  escape was his aunt Janina Sulkowska Gladun . Her route was  via Teheran, to India, and then to England. Eventually she settled in Canada ( St Catherines near Niagara Fall) Her son Jacek  made documentary recordings and had a big file of historical documentation. After he died (at 50) his work was submitted to a few Universities in the USA, including the  University of California. To see his work on line type his name and The Holocaust of the Poles. 

I have just now looked up Christopher Jacek Gladun.  We in the group know him as Chris Gladun who had been a member of our group until his early death  and  he has produced a most impressive body of works. See message 4723 form Stefan when Chris's passing was announced. 

   Lolek Gladun, Janina’s  husband was one of the few lucky Soviet prisoners who manage to escape from the Katyn massacre! Although he did not want to talk about this, at his funeral in Canada there  was an international ceremony. At the time of his death  the orthodox communist regime still governed Poland  and Jakub says the younger generation were completely taken surprised to learn of such things and the revelations  came as a shock to him.

Jakub is now trying to get some more information about his uncle Lolek Gladun the Sibirak and his history.  He would welcome any help the group could give him.

Hello Jakub,

 

These questions are of information not known by me, but you did trigger a memory of a Polish friend, who told me the story of his Polish father from Lwow,  Tarnopil, 54th  Rifle Regiment with Headquarters in Brest,  captured during the war and placed in several concentration camps, as he kept escaping and a double spy for the British, being sent to Japan in a Polish Regiment under American Control? To clean up Hiroshima after the bomb was dropped by the name of Wladyslaw Balanda, who did live in Australia and his military records were classified, even by the Australian Government.  He was my Godmothers’ husband until his death over 10 year ago.  Sadly they are all dying and only their children, if interested, will take up the challenge to find their history.  I was told this by his son, who is now in his 40’s. Is this truth or an old man ranting before his death? He became an alcoholic to hide his pain and died of Cancer of the lungs.   His son cannot find any information about his father.

 

Also, I have a Lithuanian friend who told me that during WWII, they welcomed the Germans Army coming through the front door, while the Soviets ran out the back door, they were fearful of the Soviet and happy to see them go.

 

I personally do not have great knowledge but in the group there are many wonderful educated people and those who have witnessed or are survivors of the horrors, keeping records of their family journey.  Perhaps they could take up these threads of research?

 Finding your message, may you know the Leon Gladun record of both what he recorded and from ceremony of His  burial?
Although as I was told by his widowed wife, Janka Sulkowski Gladun, for his burial sombody from Australia arrived who is encounted for the only few who maned escape from Katyn. Who is/was? this Person? Is He til alive?
   More Q: do you know what happened to those refugees, who in 1940 managed  to survive fleeing via Japan. There were at least one hundred Poles... From what I found, few of them ended in Australia and New Zealand. But with the rest of them, and who were they?
Also, did Lithuania's gov. just after German's & Russian invasion to Kresy helped to our citizens? If it is true, in what number of individuals?

Stefan, thank you for posting this, as perhaps there are others like me, who do not have the skill to search through KS records and truly appreciate the reprint of your post for CHRIS GLADUN and now having Jakub with us will be an honour.

Hello and Good night Dear Lenarda!
That's very interesting, what you say.  I am in a weak touch with some relative of the Polish heroes in America, and it is something about what you have just mentioning; Children of those, who already passed away are not very happy to keep in a touch to spread the documents of history, in which participated their parents/ relatives even close friends... Why, - I do remember the one who is a Polish family descendant
 who said " I'm American, and actually I gonna to forget all the drama and ethos  I was born at. We have to live not depressed by it. History is one thing and reality of daily life - another!".
   Well thanks God, some others left their records, manuscripts and verbal stories to past down to next generations.
   I do not know how it is in Australia, but in the UK, every next wave of Polish immigrants keep away of the older Poles.  This makes me upset, and this is a cause of separation and lack of communication among us...
It is that only those who really experienced tragedy on their own, can be friendly to you.

It is with heavy heart that I write this special message in memory
of group member Chris Gladun, who died earlier this month in
Toronto at the young age of 52, as a result of the brain tumour he
was battling for the past year. On behalf of the members of the
Kresy-Siberia Group, our deepest condolences go to Chris' wife,
Gail Tedford, and to all of his family.

I would like to take this opportunity to pay a special tribute to
Chris, who was a founding member of the Kresy-Siberia Group
in September 2001, and to the important contributions he has
made to our cause.

I first "met" Chris over the internet two years ago, when I found
his website http://www.polandsholocaust.org - which built on his
earlier feature article on "Poland's Holocaust" in the Toronto Star.
Chris was a pillar of strength in documenting and propagating
knowledge in the West of the Soviet genocide of the Polish
nation during World War 2.

Chris was born in 1951 in Paddington Hospital in England. This
is what his mother wrote about him at the time, shortly before his
family emigrated to Canada:

"Wonderful News! On the 17th of April, 1951, at sunrise our heir
to the throne saw the light of day! He brought Spring with him--it's
now the third day that the sun is shining and rain isn't falling. The
English are overjoyed, as all of England is underwater and
disaster was hanging over the country. Thrice Bless our heir to
the throne!

In truth our Jacek doesn't make much of all this. He expressed
his attitude to the world in the following way. First of all he
naturally screamed in terror; but later after he was washed and
placed beside me (still on the operating table) he looked around
and (I swear it!) let out three bubbles of saliva from his little
mouth, which meant: "I spit on the world and everyone here!"
Then for good luck, he gave a mighty sneeze. I wished him all
the best, and in this manner we entered a new life."

Indeed, Chris came from a remarkable family. His mother,
Janina Sulkowska-Gladun, joined the Polish underground in
1939 to fight the Soviets and Nazis, for which she was tortured by
the NKVD and deported to the Gulag. She dedicated her life to
finding her loved ones and honouring their memory, including
authoring the book "Wartime Memoirs, 1939-1949, published in
Warsaw, 1998.

Chris' father, Leon Gladun, was one of only 448 who survived the
murder of 27,000 Polish POW's in Katyn and other places, on
Stalin's orders, in one of the worst war crimes ever recorded. He
went on to fight the Germans in Italy, and kept a diary of his
wartime years from the 1939 Blitzkreig to V-E Day in 1945.
Though Leon died in 1973, the material in his diary is being
used as evidence by the Commission for the Investigation of
Crimes against the Polish Nation, in Warsaw.

With this background, Chris, a teacher and journalist based in
Toronto, Canada, spent years translating and researching his
family dairies, letters and documents, as well as conducting
interviews with relatives and survivors. As well as his writings
and his website, Chris also recently worked with Michael
Adamski as researcher and narrator on the film "Rescue from
Death in Siberia".

Chris dedicated all this work to his parents and to Poles
everywhere, as well as to Ukrainians, Balts, Russians, Jews and
countless others who suffered under Nazism and Communism.
His hope was that the material he presented would expand
knowledge of and interest about Poland and Poles during World
War Two, and that it would serve as an educational tool for both
laymen and historians to counteract deniers of the holocausts
perpetrated by both Hitler and Stalin.

Though Chris has been taken away from us, his work lives on in
his writings and in his website. We pay tribute to Chris as a
human being, a true son of Poland, and an everlasting
inspiration to us all.

Dear group
Please  give  a warm welcome  to Jakub . He says his family suffered enormously under both the German and Soviet invaders of Poland during WWII. One  of the relatives who managed  to  escape was his aunt Janina Sulkowska Gladun . Her route was  via Teheran, to India, and then to England. Eventually she settled in Canada ( St Catherines near Niagara Fall) Her son Jacek  made documentary recordings and had a big file of historical documentation. After he died (at 50) his work was submitted to a few Universities in the USA, including the  University of California. To see his work on line type his name and The Holocaust of the Poles. 
I have just now looked up Christopher Jacek Gladun.  We in the group know him as Chris Gladun who had been a member of our group until his early death  and  he has produced a most impressive body of works. See message 4723 form Stefan when Chris's passing was announced. 
   Lolek Gladun, Janina’s  husband was one of the few lucky Soviet prisoners who manage to escape from the Katyn massacre! Although he did not want to talk about this, at his funeral in Canada there  was an international ceremony. At the time of his death  the orthodox communist regime still governed Poland  and Jakub says the younger generation were completely taken surprised to learn of such things and the revelations  came as a shock to him.
Jakub is now trying to get some more information about his uncle Lolek Gladun the Sibirak and his history.  He would welcome any help the group could give him.

That's very interesting, what you say.  I am in a weak touch with some relative of the Polish heroes in America, and it is something about what you have just mentioning; Children of those, who already passed away are not very happy to keep in a touch to spread the documents of history, in which participated their parents/ relatives even close friends... Why, - I do remember the one who is a Polish family descendant

 who said " I'm American, and actually I gonna to forget all the drama and ethos  I was born at. We have to live not depressed by it. History is one thing and reality of daily life - another!".

   Well thanks God, some others left their records, manuscripts and verbal stories to past down to next generations.

   I do not know how it is in Australia, but in the UK, every next wave of Polish immigrants keep away of the older Poles.  This makes me upset, and this is a cause of separation and lack of communication among us...

It is that only those who really experienced tragedy on their own, can be friendly to you.

Hello Jakub,

 

These questions are of information not known by me, but you did trigger a memory of a Polish friend, who told me the story of his Polish father from Lwow,  Tarnopil, 54th  Rifle Regiment with Headquarters in Brest,  captured during the war and placed in several concentration camps, as he kept escaping and a double spy for the British, being sent to Japan in a Polish Regiment under American Control? To clean up Hiroshima after the bomb was dropped by the name of Wladyslaw Balanda, who did live in Australia and his military records were classified, even by the Australian Government.  He was my Godmothers’ husband until his death over 10 year ago.  Sadly they are all dying and only their children, if interested, will take up the challenge to find their history.  I was told this by his son, who is now in his 40’s. Is this truth or an old man ranting before his death? He became an alcoholic to hide his pain and died of Cancer of the lungs.   His son cannot find any information about his father.

 

Also, I have a Lithuanian friend who told me that during WWII, they welcomed the Germans Army coming through the front door, while the Soviets ran out the back door, they were fearful of the Soviet and happy to see them go.

 

I personally do not have great knowledge but in the group there are many wonderful educated people and those who have witnessed or are survivors of the horrors, keeping records of their family journey.  Perhaps they could take up these threads of research?

 Finding your message, may you know the Leon Gladun record of both what he recorded and from ceremony of His  burial?
Although as I was told by his widowed wife, Janka Sulkowski Gladun, for his burial sombody from Australia arrived who is encounted for the only few who maned escape from Katyn. Who is/was? this Person? Is He til alive?
   More Q: do you know what happened to those refugees, who in 1940 managed  to survive fleeing via Japan. There were at least one hundred Poles... From what I found, few of them ended in Australia and New Zealand. But with the rest of them, and who were they?
Also, did Lithuania's gov. just after German's & Russian invasion to Kresy helped to our citizens? If it is true, in what number of individuals?

Stefan, thank you for posting this, as perhaps there are others like me, who do not have the skill to search through KS records and truly appreciate the reprint of your post for CHRIS GLADUN and now having Jakub with us will be an honour.

 

By reading all the information provided, I now understand more and have vindicated my assumptions that KS was and is a very special group because of its founders and Directors.

 

I am privileged to be part of such an honourable, respectful, educated group, with each of us having different skills and information to contribute, searching for our families, for truth and letting the world know of the very real injustice suffered by the Kresy people and to be informed that Chris was part of this beginning, is even more special.

 

Your explanation of how our funds and donations are used has made me aware of fragility and uniqueness of the information and material discovered about the Kresy people and if we do not grab it when available, then it will be lost forever.

We have to be always on the lookout and have sufficient funds available, from donations of members and sponsors etc. to record and keep this information for our future and the future of our children and all who wish to research WWII and the Kresy people.

Thank you very much for sharing this dissertation about construction of the Kotlas-Pechora railway in Komi, Stan.
My father was enslaved in that region and helped to build that railway.
For those who have not yet read the document but are interested in this location, I am attaching a raw Google translation to save you some time. I don't speak Russian, less say read Russian, so cannot speak to the accuracy of the translation. However, it seems to read quite well and no doubt we can extract at least the broad meaning. Someone with a working knowledge of Russian may find it useful as a preliminary stage and undertake to do a better translation.
This is a scholarly work short on conditions in the camps and long on underlying political decisions. The main lesson I took from it is that slave labour for development of Komi, particularly the railway through the region, was the motivation for incarcerating people like my father - the "corrective" element of imprisonment was a cynical front. The author does not shy away from emphasizing the cruelty and violence inherent in the repressions.

John, wish you could send some of that snow to Aussie land as we have just survived a record heatwave of 45.8 celcius, at a guess about 116 Fahrenheit,   in Sydney Central, with the last known recording of equal temperature back in 1939. Paramedics and hospitals run off their feet with victims of heat stroke. We survived locked inside with airconditioner on freezing and lots of rehydrating salty fluids, with the garden turning into crispy chips.

Thank you very much for sharing this dissertation about construction of the Kotlas-Pechora railway in Komi, Stan.
My father was enslaved in that region and helped to build that railway.
For those who have not yet read the document but are interested in this location, I am attaching a raw Google translation to save you some time. I don't speak Russian, less say read Russian, so cannot speak to the accuracy of the translation. However, it seems to read quite well and no doubt we can extract at least the broad meaning. Someone with a working knowledge of Russian may find it useful as a preliminary stage and undertake to do a better translation.
This is a scholarly work short on conditions in the camps and long on underlying political decisions. The main lesson I took from it is that slave labour for development of Komi, particularly the railway through the region, was the motivation for incarcerating people like my father - the "corrective" element of imprisonment was a cynical front. The author does not shy away from emphasizing the cruelty and violence inherent in the repressions.
Again, thank you Stan for this interesting window into the minds of the perpetrators.

Hi John,
Thanks for the tranlation. It isnt easy reading for me, stuffy one-sided insensitive arrogance.
To say this article is 'short on conditions in the camp' and not reference the fact that the labor came from illegally kidnapped prisoners is like saying that my wonderful cotton sheets came from an American industry grown and developed by people who happened to get a good tan while at work picking cotton.
Does the end justify the means and is development of Soviet economic development so important that it should occur at the expense of everyone by force under any conditions?
I fully agree it gives us a look into the minds of the perpetrators but only a russian would enjoy it in seeking relief from guilt.
Maybe I should kidnap and starve someone and when before the judge, point to how much weight my captive lost.
Alot of our kids run to Northern Alberta to develop the oilfields but only because they benefit from outstanding pay and they go by choice.
Maybe I had too many Zywiecs.

CZERKAWSKI, Emil - Aged 87 years died at home January 17th, 2013 surrounded by family. Born in Poland he experienced the full horror of the Second World War. He served first with the underground Home Army (AK) and fought in the Warsaw Uprising of 1944, initially interned as a POW, he escaped, was arrested by the GESTAPO and was sent to the Buchenwald concentration camp in Weimer, Germany. He was liberated by advance units of U.S. 3rd Army and joined the free Polish forces in Italy, serving with General Anders' 2nd Polish Corps as a junior officer. After he was discharged from the army he settled in England where he met his wife, Anna. They were married in 1948. He received his Bsc. Eng. at the University of London and moved to Canada in 1951, eventually settling in London, Ontario where he joined the M.M. Dillon firm in 1958. First as an associate and eventually becoming a senior partner and head of Electrical Engineering, he spent 32 rewarding years with Dillon. He is survived by his children Barbara and Mark (Annette) and grandchildren Samuel and James. He was a man of great strength, tolerance and understanding and will be fondly remembered by many. Visitation will be held at the WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, on Monday from 7:00-9:00 p.m. with prayers at 6:45 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Michael's Parish, 511 Cheapside Street, London, on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. Interment, Woodland Cemetery. Dear Basia!

I have the same job - to find, in which camp (and beyond - camp punkt, item) was my grandfather. I only know that he spent 1.5 years in Komi, was exhausted to utmost and a miracle (as I now realize) was in reserve grade "C" in 3 DSK. I understand that he was helped by the fact that he fought and had a reward for  war 1918-20.

So I will do everything possible to find traces of my grandfather. Resistance is great - I wrote 5 letters and everywhere one answer. But I'm not giving up. I breaking them.
As I wrote after 2011 case of Professor Suprun from Arkhangelsk, MVD almost closed its archives. I am in contact with Mikhail Rogachev - head of the Memorial Society in Komi. But even for him archives are now closed.
This year will be released the last, so call "people" tom of Memorial Komi, there may be something. This information is collected by different people literally bit by bit, went to homes, sat in the library. Tremendous work and voluntary.

Basia, as I wrote in 1940-41, in Komi 5 large camps. UhtiZhemLag - one of them. But I think there must be sought in the last turn. There are several reasons
1. Prisoners UhtiZhemLag are most revealed in the writings Rogachev with friends and made in Memorial Komi. This he told me  - the work was in the early 2000's, when archives were still open.
2. According to my preliminary estimates, in UhtiZhemLage sat  minimum percentage of Poles.
3. Some confusing town of Ukhta. But the center of this camp was in a different place.

Basia, kindly tell me all known information about your father. Whether he was convicted (key word - sentence) or prisoners of war remained without penalty. When he was arrested. When released.

I have included a Word copy of the pdf on 'Bajonówka'. What I did was select all-copy-paste into a word file and then corrected the spacing and copied the word document into google translate.   Now let's work on Krechowiecka and say maybe something on Hallerowo?
Is there an ability to search within the osadnicy site? I was unable to find a way. I have also not yet read the translated version.
Jackie R. there is mention of the 45th-I have not forgotten I owe you something on that but I have to find my notes.

I don't speak Russian, less say read Russian, so cannot speak to the accuracy of the translation. However, it seems to read quite well and no doubt we can extract at least the broad meaning. Someone with a working knowledge of Russian may find it useful as a preliminary stage and undertake to do a better translation.
This is a scholarly work short on conditions in the camps and long on underlying political decisions. The main lesson I took from it is that slave labour for development of Komi, particularly the railway through the region, was the motivation for incarcerating people like my father - the "corrective" element of imprisonment was a cynical front. The author does not shy away from emphasizing the cruelty and violence inherent in the repressions.
Again, thank you Stan for this interesting window into the minds of the perpetrators.

thanks for this, I will print and give to grandmother, tommorrow there is
grandma's day - I hope she will be very happy while reading it.

one more interesting is that as many information I'm getting and speak to her,
then more things she is recalls herself.
last week I got details about her baptismals and parents friends - Czerniszewicz
family.
