This is a tantalizing article, Pan Antoni. As I understand it, the 8th Division started travelling to Guzar from Chok Pak on March 23. The journey is only about 315 km "as the crow flies" but probably farther by train through the mountains between. But even if it arrived on March 24, the article says: "It was not until the fourth day we were in Guzar that we were provisioned..." which indicates they were probably still at Guzar on March 27 or so.
When did the Division embark for Krasnovodsk, 1,720 kilometres to the west?
When did it arrive at Krasnovodsk, and when did it cross the Caspian Sea to Pahlevi? I know that my father was in the first exodus in March-April 1942, so it had to be around this time.
Since this information comes from Part 14 of the journal, these questions and more might be answered in following issues of Mleczko tygodnik polski. This one is Nr 36(114) 11.09.2010.
Could you explain how to find later editions to see if they have more of the journal? I can't even figure out how you found this one - that is some very impressive access to resources.
This may indeed be the journal to which Andrew Lopianowski was referring. I am still hoping to see Andrew's journal just in case it is different and has yet more information.
Thanks very much for sharing this link, Pan Antoni. It has opened a whole new path for detective work that may finally answer where my father was on March 30 when he is officially documented as having joined the 8th Infantry Division.

Hello John,

I am wondering if this is the journal you are referring to in your note;

http://content.yudu.com/Library/A1p4iy/tygodnikPolski114/resources/10.htm
I am not sure where this extract comes from, but it is in reference to the date you mentioned, namely 23rd March 1942.
Please check it out.

I verified that my father was in the first exodus (March-April 1942) by getting documentation about his military service from the British Ministry of Defence. If your relative was in the military under British Command and you haven't yet made the request, I recommend it highly.

Hello Terry

Thank you for the advice, and I will get in touch with Stanislaw for his help. I have had absolutely no luck (other than finding my paternal grandmother Anna Nikiel, on the List of Evacuees).  My paternal grandfather, Jan Nikiel was a policeman in the village of Troszyn near Ostrolenka, which is not in the Kresy and I wonder whether there are separate lists relating to those who were arrested/deported from the Kresy and those who were arrested/deported from the rest of Poland.  A few years ago, my late uncle Henry Nikiel let me know that Jan Nikiel's papers were found at Katyn, however I did not press for more info as uncle Henry was, at that time, dying from cancer.  My late father Stanislaw Nikiel was very vague whenever I asked questions about that time but he did tell me that his father Jan was arrested and taken to Lomza prison, held there for approximately 1 month and then, just disappeared.  After my father's death my uncle Henry told me the same, that he would take food to the prison and could speak to his father through the prison window, but when he arrived the last time with food, the prison was empty and he could not find out what had happened.  A few weeks later, my father, my uncle, my aunt Janina and my grandmother Anna, were arrested from their home in Troszyn and deported to Kazakstan, to a place called Wsiewolowodka.

I contacted Antoni who searched for and found a map of North Kazakstan and worked out approximately where Wsiewolowodka was situated.  This was the amazing news for me and I am forever grateful to Antoni for his help and his time.

Thank you again for giving me the nudge to contact Stanislaw Z.

Hi Beata,

I suspect you saw the message from Jan re:Nikiel on the 'Lists". Any luck? Has anyone ever looked at the Russian 'Memo' lists for you? If not ask Stanislaw Z. I asked him a few things and he was quite helpful for me.

Hello Terry

Are there any lists for "N"? I am looking specifically for NIKIEL (or anything close). I believe the Sikorski lists are missing List 3, being N-Z. Just my luck!!

There are some complications that can give a misleading understanding of when individuals actually crossed the Caspian if you only follow MOD info as to enlistment. My father enlisted at Kermine on 10 Feb 1942 so logic and the MOD date of his enlistment suggested he should have left USSR on the first ships out. However he contracted typhus in Kermine or another camp in the USSR so wasn’t able to leave when his colleagues left. He was left behind with other typhus sufferers until they either died or were well enough to leave. In Dad’s case this was probably early August though we don’t know for sure. So do try to get as much info from the MOD as you can but don’t necessarily add 2+2 and assume it makes 4 because all sorts of individual circumstances happened to make unique narratives.

If I am not mistaken in the US, a number of years ago, the same thing happened regarding the school curriculum. The Polish community did file some kind of law suit to include some polish references in the school curriculum and I think it won in court and I think some references were/are included but I do not believe in all the states.

At the time of the above event I was not involved in any Polish history or trying to correct errors or falsehood that were being spread against Poland or the Polish people so I have a vague relocation of this problem regarding the school curriculum. I am sure others in this group might have better information on this subject then I have. I think that some Polish groups in California were involved.

I personally have no objection to any group trying to include their history in a school setting or curriculum.

I do have an objection to specific groups trying to make their horrible plight shown as having a higher value in terms of the atrocities committed against them, than what others suffered during the same time in history by the same murders or as been the case in the past not even mentioning in any detail other nations sufferings and/or atrocities even if other's atrocities were greater.

Therefore,at thesometimeI believe a great responsibility falls on the Polish people to take positive action and see that its history is included everywhere and in this case the school curriculum by designing a curriculum and then submitting it to all the school systems. We should not depend on other groups to do that work for us or complain if their history is included and ours is not. Especially if during if we did not made any effort to present a detailed curriculum on Poland, its suffering and the atrocities that wereperpetratedon its people.

As in many cases funds are needed to do this type of work, a great deal of volunteer work needs done and the Polish people need to be well organized. We don't even have a complete mailing or e-mail list of the Polish people through the world to start organizing them. That should have been one of the first steps taken years ago by different Polish organizations throughout the world.

You will note that the total world population of the group mentioned earlier is about 15 million yet theirorganizationsfunction at a higherprecision then most of the world's groups, countries or populations.

For example the funds that flow to this group from the US isunbelievably highwhen compared to what any other nation or group receives annually. That is not the fault of this group that they receive all that money with no strings attached. They worked for this by properly organizingthemselves. We should not be envious but learn from their example and successes.

Note they as a group never have admitted to any error or wrong doing in their historical past.

We on theother handseem to fight over smalldetails which have no major barring on the end results.

If we wish to receive the same amount of funds or have our suffering included in any schoolcurriculumwe must review theirstrategy. It is really our fault that we have not learned how toorganize our people and our strengths to havesimilarresults in many different areas of life and government.

Currently as far as this group (Kresy-Siberia ) is concerned we are having a difficult time collecting funds and volunteers for our Virtual Museum which really should have been completed months ago.

Will we have the energy, time, volunteers or funds to do the next project one being creating a curriculum for the many different school systems in the world and then pushing them through the correct channels?

I hope we can complete the Virtual Museum soon and then work on one of the next BIG PROJECTS. but who will step up to these great important tasks?

That would be correct. Each state is wholly independent (at least for

The joke among WW2 scholars is that American high school kids know two
things about the Second World War:

1) That the Americans bombed Hiroshima, and

2) That the Japanese retaliated by bombing Pearl Harbor.

Dear Helen

Thank you for your invitation to join the group. My Father's story is shared by many, many others. I am trying very belatedly to find more information about where my family came from and its history but unfortunately all we have is the stories my Father told us.

My Father was born in 1931 and the family had a small farm on the outskirts of Dolhinow. The nearest city I believe was Vilnius. My Grandfather Piotr had fought with or in the Polish Army that had driven the Russians out of what was to become Eastern Poland. My Father told me Piotr ' was given more land' because he had been in the army. All I know is Piotr Nadolski was born in Zarzecze - Dolhinowon 29th June 1896  the son of Ludwick Nadolski and Maria nee Sokolowska. My Grandmother was Helena Sielicka , daughter of Florian Sielicki and Petronela nee Lazaronek. She was also born in Dolhinow.

My Father told me the family lived under Russian occupation for a while. My Father always believed an informant told the Russians that my Grandfather had fought agains them previously so like many others were given half an hour to pack what they could carry and taken from their farm. My Grandfather was imprisoned and the family put on cattle trucks to Siberia.

My Father thought this happened just prior the the German's sudden attack on their Russian allies.

From here the story resembles that of many others. My Grandfather as freed from prison and joined the Free Polish Army and the family released from Siberia to travel through the southern Russian states, sailing from Persia (Iran) to Karachi. The family spent a month there before sailing to Africa landing in Mombassa. They were settled in Massindi for the duration of the war.

Piotr Nadolski served in Egypt. He arrived with his regiment at Leek, England in 1947 and the family arrived in Southampton in 1948. The family were then relocated to a Polish camp at RAF St Mawgan, just outside Newquay, Cornwall.

Does anyone know if it is possible to trace family records in what is now Belarus? And is it possible to trace military records in Poland  to find out Piotr's army record. The family took no documentation with them when they left there farm.

This is really the start of my research journey. I am greatly encouraged to find the Kresy-Siberia group and Museum. Any help or pointers the group could give me would be really appreciated.

I have a few copies of group pictures from Massindi I could post if anyone is interested.

Best wishes

Andrew

Hi Lucyna

Wiktor Nadolski is my Uncle, my Father's oldest brother. Unfortunately I cannot
speak, or read Polsh so don't know what the words after his name mean. The area
of Derby is correct so I know it is him.
My Father Czeslaw, brother Wiktor and sister Aniela ended up in Derby. The
youngest brother Boguslaw moved to Canada. Only Boguslaw and Wiktor are still
alive

Hi Lucyna

Wiktor Nadolski is my Uncle, my Father's oldest brother. Unfortunately I cannot speak, or read Polsh so don't know what the words after his name mean. The area of Derby is correct so I know it is him.
My Father Czeslaw, brother Wiktor and sister Aniela ended up in Derby. The youngest brother Boguslaw moved to Canada. Only Boguslaw and Wiktor are still alive

John,

The Tygodnik Polski is published by Pan Mleczko, who owns a chain of Polish delicatessens in West London.

Pan Mleczko was a deportee, and his father was an Osadnik. The magazine usually includes an article about the experiences of the deported.

You can see the back issues here http://tygodnikpolski.co.uk/archiwum-2/

Hello John,

I am wondering if this is the journal you are referring to in your note;

http://content.yudu.com/Library/A1p4iy/tygodnikPolski114/resources/10.htm
I am not sure where this extract comes from, but it is in reference to the date you mentioned, namely 23rd March 1942.
Please check it out.

As I recollect; more research is needed.

The 8th Division (or at least part of it, including my father) made the crossing in that period, so I am curious to know when the 8th Division left Chokpak, boarded the ship(s) and / or landed in Pahlevi.

Julian Siedlecki does not mention of any movement of forces in his book.
