Dear group,
I am working on the Gallery overview for Evacuation and want to corroborate some
figures before I send it to the Academic advisory committee. For all our
"numbers" experts in the group, what is your view on the following numbers:
- First evacuation to Pahlevi 33,039 military and 10,789 civilians
- Second evacuation to Pahlevi 44,832 military and 25,437 civilians
- Overland 701 military and 1,936 civilians

total 116,663

Kind regards, Anna Pacewicz
Sydney Australia

Hi Anna,
Keith Sword,  "Deportation and Exile"  p. 71  - 1st arrival , March 25-April 5  -  43,858.  Page 81 states 69,247 in second evacuation.
Hope the numbers match in at least two sources.
Thanks for the monumental task you have undertaken.

Halik Kochanski uses these numbers:

March-April: 31,189 soldiers and 12,408 civilians

August: 26,094 civilians and 43,476 soldiers

"A further 2,694, mostly children, came by road...."

She also notes there were 4,226 Jewish soldiers among the military evacuees.

I have found that it is awfully difficult to be precise about anything,
once you are dealing with more than one hundred. For that reason, I
generally prefer to round off to the nearest 100 or even 1000, except in
cases like the Katyn massacres where I think it's probably better to be
precise and wrong than to be vague.

Note that in the case of the evacuees that some died upon arrival at
Pahlevi. That in itself could explain some of the discrepancies, where
the NKVD gives the number loaded onto the boats and the British army
gives the number cleaned up and sent on. (Besides, WHO IS GOING TO COUNT
people in such distress? Counting is just not the first priority in a
situation like that, even for a bureaucrat.)

Dear Anna

Swords figure  113,103. I don't think he included the overland route in his calculations.

-----------------

Polish Government Report dated 1943:

Point 1. Commissar Wyszynski [Andrei Yanuaryevich Vyshinsky – Deputy Foreign Minister] in a press interview on 6th May, 1943 said that 75,491 military personnel and 37,756 military family members left the USSR in '42. Total 113,247. This number concurs with the data held by Polish institutions in Teheran. After adding the numbers evacuated directly by the Embassy in '41, '42 and '43 we get the round number of 115,000.       http://www.szukajwarchiwach.pl/800/35/0/-/44/str/1/52#tab2 519.JPG

-----------------

There is also this from 1946:

Left the USSR in two evacuations 1942: 114,500  But it is not clear if this is just by sea or if it includes the overland numbers.

http://pism.co.uk/A7307/A7_307_9c.pdf  Document 229

----------------

Wikipedia states:

About 77,000 combatants and 41,000 civilians   Total [118,000] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish_Armed_Forces_in_the_East

----------------

The Polish language version of the Kresy Syberia Wirtualne Muzeum has:

Evac 1: 44,000: 33,000 soldiers+ 11,000 civilians

Evac 2: 70,000: 45,000 soldiers+ 25,000 civilians.

Total Evac: 116,000 78,000 soldiers +38,000 civilians

http://kresy-siberia.org/anders/

Which, given a bit of rounding here and there are the same as your figures.

Best regards, Mark Ostrowski

Dear Anna

British Army figures give:
(Pahlevi)
in the first evacuation
12,408 Civilian
31,189 Military
43,597 Total

In the second evacuation
26,094 Civilian
43,746 Military
69,840 Total

Add in the Group from Meshed
2,694 Total

116,131 Grand Total

Note 3,231 military personnel were discharged upon arrival.

Whilst there are differences in the numbers in each category the overall total
corresponds closely to yours.

I hope this is of help.

Best Wishes,

Robert Ostrycharz

What was that? Is it a reference to the three thousand Jews (including
Menachim Begin!) who deserted in Palestine to fight for a Jewish state?

Dear all,
I knew I could count on the knowledge and goodwill reservoir within the group to
help me with the figures. They all seem to roughly corroborate and Dan I think
that you are right to either approximate to the nearest 100 or 1000, or to quote
the actual ranges.
Many thanks,
Anna Pacewicz
