Hi Cindy,

The photo reads: "In the house of the Banasiow's during my birthday
celebrations. This is I and the Kaczmarczyks."

I extrapolated a bit at the end re "zabowy" which in this context
means "zabawa" (festivities or celebration) and "urodziu" which
certainly is urodziny (birthday).

Good Luck

To All,

Thank you for all your comments positive and negative regarding the
translation programs.
Our community never fails to have a lively discussion on many topics
which helps all sides in reviewing their positions and in most cases
brings out the best in us. I hope that we look out for the best in
each other rather then the worst. I hope that our goal is to help
each other rather then to tear down what we have established here in
this community.

So I again thank you all.

There are a few comments that I would like to make as to this issue
and these will be my last comments.

1. I have no vested interest one way or another if someone buys
or does not buy this product. For those who are interested an
excellent price was negotiated.
2. This product is a translation product. Some of us don't like
its limitations but it does what is says it does.
3. Some call this product a glorified dictionary. Some claim
that we should spend our funds on a paper home dictionary or
electronic dictionaries. A paper or electronic dictionary has some
limitations also. You have to look up each word one at a time. If
you can't spell it gives you no hints. The process of looking up 200
to 1000 words one at a time is a daunting task and I have done this
in the past and don't like it. This program looks up the entire
document all at one time.
4. If we were to buy 3 good dictionaries the cost could be
almost equal to the price of this program maybe a little less but
this program does so much more.
5. I will submit to Michael the final list of interested people
on March 22nd.
6. I also use the dictionary in Microsoft word program. Many
times I have to ask my wife how do you spell…….. It seems that
dictionaries also have limitations or is it I who has these
limitations?
7. We are at the 150.00 level

Thank you all for your indulgence and I hope I have not offended
greatly any who might have different views, reservations on the
perceived or real limitations regarding this offer.

As an added bonus Michael said any future upgrades will be free to
our group.

Regards,
Julek

Hi everyone,
I would like to add some comments about our discussion on
translation programs. I assume/hope that the translation program
works through using 'cut and paste'. So a sentence written in
English will be translated into Polish, Russian or Ukrainian and it
can then be cut and pasted into the target document. Even if I knew
Russian or Ukrainian I would find it extremly difficult/impossible
to write anything in these languages as I only possess a standard
QWERTY keyboard. A dictionary would require knowing the Russian /
Ukrainian alphabet to be of any use.

Hi Val,

Almost worried abou explaing this, I might get reprimanded again! Oh! what
the hell!!

No, it's much easier than that, NO 'cut & paste' at all.
When you install these progs, they go straight into your 'web browser' and
into 'Word'

For use on the Net; on your top row, in TOOLS, drop down, it will have added
PARS to the list. from here you have the choice of 3 languages, either FROM
or TO that language, click a small square box, OK.
It'll disappear then, go up to where the address at the top, click the green
GO and wait a few moments - that's it

In 'Word';
On the very top, it will have added 'TRANSLATE', type your letter in Eng
[rembering short/precise sentencces, key words are important, not all the
extra words that we stick in a sentece]. SAVE Eng version, or you'll never
remember what you wrote to who, about what!! Then opp click,to make it go
black, up to TRANSLATE, drop down, choose which one. Another screen will
appear on botton half, maximise, SAVE again. ALWAYS print off 2 x
Russian/Ukraine + 1 Eng = 1 Rus to send + 1 of each for yourself.

There is something called 'varients' which means [when turned on to work].
that any word it's not sure of, will have a * at each end of that word.
Click an * and a choice of 3 words will come up, You can then check in yor
Russian/Ukr dictionary to decide. I don't bother with them any more after
3-4 years

I have, in 'Word', a half page of exactly what is under each key, in each of
the languages, each in a different colour. When I started playing with
languages I printed it off, glued it to cardboard, propped it up by the
keyboard. I'm sure I can't send attachments via K-S? so, if anybody wants
it, you'll have to email my addy [ladbrooke@...].

For UK only;
If anyone needs to know how to make your Microsoft computer receive email in
other languages, from different parts of the world [not just ????? only] eg;
Central/Western/Eastern Zones/HTML/ASC11/RICH TXT/PL;AIN TXT, and also to
alter your keyboards for Russian or Ukranian, Polish, just ask. I have not
'played' with Polish much yet, but I've done all that's needed be ready to.

Hope this helps Val

Thanks Linder,
I am happy to have as much information as you are willing to give.
Everyone has their own methods of doing things and what works for
one person does not work for another. ('One man's meat is another
man's poison'). I will try anything and I will print your
instructions for when I get the programs. For now, I have managed
to follow Antoni's instruction and I can now get Russian/Ukranian
equivalents of the English alphabet into Word documents using the
QWERTY keyboard. I would like to be able to have the extra Polish
letters added to my keyboard. I use the Symbols option in word when
I am making titles for my album and it would be useful to have them
on the keyboard. I have changed my Yahoo membership to accept
individual emails and I am now receiving attachments with no
problems.

all the best

Great news:
At the last minute we received order to put us at the 11 purchases
to reach the 100.00 price.

Anyone who has sent their funds in earlier will receive a refund
with the program.

Anyone who wishs to contact Michael direct regarding any questions
his e-mail is below.

Please follow the instructions below when sending in the funds;

Michael will enclose a $50.00 refund check with the CDs if the
customer's check is for $150.00.

Again, the customer's check is to be made payble to Lingvistica '98
Inc. NB:

Michael said the following:
I have just received a check drawn to a 'Michael Blekham'. Of course
I can't take it to the bank. The funny thing is that I was
named 'Bleckman' on the envelope.

NB: my last name is Blekhman, not 'Blekham' or 'Bleckman'.

Thanks again, Julek!

Przeworsk, region Podkarpackie (Subcarpathian) with its main town
Rzeszow, country of Poland. Manasterz lies at the foot of low hills
called Dynowkie Foothills, along the Przeworsk -- Dynow Road, and
along the small river Mleczka. The village is large, 8 kilometres long
and has several settlements: Rzeki, Oblaskek, Mijow, Niewazka. These
are groupings of farms lying in the hills and above the main village.
Manasterz is a typical agricultural village (siolo?) of south-eastern
Poland.

History of the family:
During the partitions of Poland in the years 1795-1914, Manasterz was
under Prussian administration. In the village, the Germans had large
agricultural holdings called Kolonies. Towards the end of the 19th
century, when Poland was recovering her independence, the Germans were
selling entire farms and leaving for Germany. Maciej (Matthew)
Pawelek, the son of Jozef (Joseph)) bought one of the larger farms
lying in the middle of the village of Manasterz. Maciej bought the
dwelling house, agricultural buildings and about 20 hectares of fields.
The heads of the family -- Maciej was married to Maria (Kisiel)
Pawelek -- were respected landlords. The villagers trusted the
landlord and chose him as head of the district Manasterz. Maciej
carried out these functions for many years, despite being illiterate,
and had a secretary to help him, who took care of paperwork.

Dear Uncle!!!
I am sending a part of what my mother wrote. See if you can read
something and understand something of it. The next section on specific
people I will send in a few days. I have CD's in my computer at home
so there is no problem, you can send a CD.
For the time being I won't send you any snow. You have enough of your
own. Mama described the history of the family, where the Pawelek
family comes from Bystrowice. Write back to tell us whether you can
understand what we wrote. Where there are mistakes we will underline
in bold face.

Greetings to the whole family,

Maciej and Maria were Catholics, all their children were baptized in
the Catholic church in Manasterz. When the children grew up, Maciej
decided that the sons would remain on the family holding in Manasterz
and would receive fields equally. However for the daughters (Katarzyna
and Jozefa) they bought 20 hectares of fields in Bystrowice, district
Jaroslaw. This field was being sold a [sorry - don't know what an
obszarnik -- petty noble is] from Pantalowic. This petty noble had
lost a lot of money at cards and had to sell his field. Maciej bought
up an entire farm in Bystrowicach: a dwelling house, farm buildings
and 10 hectares of fields. Katarzyna received all of this. Josefa also
got 10 hectares of fields but without buildings.

Along with his family, Maciej used to go to Bystrowic to deal with
buying the field. As neighbours, wealthy farmers from Wola
Rozwienicka, Jaroslaw district were fixing up the field. Katarzyna
married the son of these farmers in 1920. The wedding took place at
the Catholic church in Manasterz and they lived in Bystrowice in
buildings bought by Maciej. They ran a large farm. As rich farmers,
they could afford servants. They were planning to build a large wooden
house, but unfortunately Michal died at the age of 39.

Julek,
I notice that your Polish letter mentions a village by the name of
Manasterz, province of Rzeszow and County of Przeworsk. Well, my
family was also from around that area and I have done lots of
research recently. I don't know who is wrong here, but my notes and
my maps show that the area in question was under Astrian/Habsburg
Empire rule and not under Prussian. Here's a quote from one of my
research papers "the fall of Rzeszow was speeded by the conquest of
Malopolska by the Austarian army, and, together with the extensive

part of the Habsburg Empire for the next 146 years."
You may want to check on that. Do let me know your findings.

Julek,
While I was doing the translation, I too thought that the Rzeszow area
was more likely to be under Austro-Hungarian administration, given its
location in south-eastern Poland. Perhaps your relatives called them
"Prussians" because the settlers were German-speaking?

Is there anyone who can translate the following: eszt Betinek?  I am not even sure what language it is.  Polish? Russian?

Thank you.

Joy,
It looks like Hungarian. "eszt" means Estonian, as far as I've been
able to figure out. "Betinek" is probably a name. Sounds Slavic to
me, Czech or Slovak perhaps, though I see it mentioned mostly on
Hungarian sites in Google.

Have a look at some words with the root "eszt":

language=hu&search=eszt&allow=true"

Did you copy these words down or did you hear them ? What is the
context ?

Joy,
I spoke with a Hungarian friend of mine, who said that "eszt" may be
short for the name "Eszter".

Andy,
Thank you! I was going through some old photos of my father-in-law's (unfortunately, people often didn't write names or dates on the backs of photos way back when!!) and found a really old one with those words on the back.

One side of his family came from Hungary and the other, we think, from Czechoslovakia.  Unfortunately, there is no way now of identifying who the people are in the photo.

Thanks again, Andy.

Andy,

Thank you!  That could be it.  Do Hungarian names normally use lower case for the first letter?

No, but then again, look how many people write "polish" instead of "Polish".
Perhaps there are some Hungarian resources where you live, which is ?

As i remember from my long ago  polish school days you used capital letters for nouns as in proprietary names but you used small letters in all other cases. In english oops should have written English all such names are capitalized even if the are adjectives or adverbs, or just poor grammar? Dziadzius

Hello Antoni,
No I have not emigrated &so sorry for the long delay in sending this e-
mail; due to the fact I wrote to the Hoover Archives in California,USA
hoping to receive news of my husband Michal Pukiello you may recall I
e-mailed you after I had purchased my laptop at the tender age of 83.
i am very into it now and cannot believe what I have found out & also
I read all your replies to other members-SUPERB.
I wonder if I sent you the details the Archives sent, could you please
translate for me , or tell me howto go about it as my Polish is very
limited.
I have it on my laptop & will send it if that is OK.
Look forward in anticipation, hope you are well.
Regards Cynthia.

Joy,

Translated into English, the statement means: "Register of killed and
deceased soldiers of the Polish Armed Forces abroad (or in exile) in the
years 1939-1946, London 1952 - page."

Beata, Olga & Rys

Thank you so much for the translations. After all these years I now know what the writer wished to say. As you observe Beata, a "very poignant dedication" indeed. Sadly my late father never made the journey back to his homeland. He had nothing & nobody left to return to. I am attaching the actual photograph bearing this inscription, in the hope that somebody may just recognise the young lady who wrote this message.
