Dear Krystyna:

Thank you very much for the link and the church picture. I have a picture
of that church that my father kept with him. It shows the black madona- our
polish shrine that was kept in the church that my father served in as alter
boy... I am convinced it the the same church you have found.

If your father's family name is Wszol then his name is not on the list of
osadnicy (settlers) at Osada Krechowiecka. Is it possible that this was one
of the civilian families living on the osada, whose name we do not have?
this would be very interesting as it would be a previously unknown name we
could add to the list.
the link didn't work for me for some reason but you can find the list in our

Files on Yahoo, Personal Testimonies, Maczka Family documents,
OSADNICY ON THE OSADA KRECHOWIECKA. doc
This list and many photos from the Osada are on the Gallery but it doesn't
seem to be accessible at the moment.

Micha:

I think that Krechowiecka is Osada Krechowiecka which was one of a number of

settlements in the Kresy made up of veterans of the WWI and the
Polish-Bolshevik conflict. My grandfather, Kazimierz Morawski was associated

with this osada. The following link will take you to a document about the
osada written by Mrs. Gradosielska mother of Elzunia Olsen who is a

Dear Antoni:

You have given me a fantastic Christmas present. Yes that is exactly
correct. You have described my family well.. I did not know however, the
name of Krechowiecka, but I did know of rovne, powiat, wolyn. Now something
very scary that my dad told me and I tend to believe him. The Nowy obraz
Krolowej Korony Polskiej I Kosciola osadniczego w Karlowszczyznie na Wolyniu
was in town when the Russians came. My dad spoke that he,another alter boy
and the priest took and hid the gold frock, gold, jewels and scepter in
their little town on that day. That town just might have been Krechowiecka.

Thank you so much... It must be in Russia now as that part apparantly was

Morning Antoni / Elzunia,

If I may join this discussion and make one of my (these days)very rare
postings.

Osada Krechowiecka is / was probably midway between both Aleksandria and
Tuczyn - at the time of the Osada, the nearest village geographically was
perhaps Kozlin. All of these villages are on the River Horyn.

Another possibility is that Jan Wzsol may have been renting a plot from one
of the original settlers as this did happen in several instances. For
example the plot next to my Grandfathers (Stanislaw Armatys) was leased to a
German civilian settler for many years.

This was also verified by my own visit to the area in 2004 when the present
occupiers of my Grandfather's plot of land mentioned that "a German was
still living next door when they arrived in 1947."

Dear Elizabeth:

This is truly a small world when one can get this type of information, and
track right to the person, a moment in history that very few know. My
father indicated a place where they hid this obraz. He wrote the pope to
try to get permission for he, the priest and another alter boy to be able to
give it back to the Catholic church. The only thing he wanted was to have
his and their names included on a plaque indicating that they were the
guardians of this treasure. It never came about as the Vatican responded
but wanted the obraz to be transported to the Vatican city, but without any
media.

My father, sadly passed away in 1986. His name was

Hi Kazimierz
Yes there was a picture of Our Lady in the church at Karlowszczyzna, I have
photos of the church and of the picture I can let you have. (They are also
on the Gallery which we can't access at the moment.)
You are right about the picture being hidden when the Soviets invaded. I
believe my uncle was also involved in the secret, together with the Priest,
Ks. Kakol and another boy (your father?). The picture was moved and is now
hanging in a church in Augustow, Bialystok area.
Is your father still alive so you can ask him about this? I'm copying my
uncle to get his comments.

There are more Karlowszczyzna-related photos there, use the 'search' box at the

Karłowszczyzna (I'm sure yahoo will mess it up anyway).

Gosia Wozniacka and Wojciech Kosc
21 December 2009

Joining the EU brought many benefits to Poles and much harder lives for
those living just the other side of the bloc's new eastern border.

The decade that is drawing to a close saw its share of revolutions, whether
on the street, at the ballot box, or by the stroke of a bureaucrat's pen.
From now through Wednesday, 23 December, TOL will look at how we covered
some of the most significant events of the past 10 years - today, the "big
bang" accession of 10 new countries to the European Union in 2004. We will
then halt publication until 4 January. We wish our readers a joyous holiday
season.

This article originally ran on 10 September 2004.

TOKARY, Poland | Down Napoleon Highway, where the French emperor marched his
troops to Moscow, a road winds through thick forest, barren fields, and
hamlets cocooned in lingering morning mist. Wooden huts perch on the edge of
clearings.

Around the bend, the village of Tokary appears almost out of nowhere. A
Catholic cemetery, guarded by an Orthodox wooden cross, marks the entrance.
At the crossroads, two border patrolmen chat next to their jeep on the empty
and wind-swept road.

The main street of Tokary.

A mile into town, Eugeniusz Wichowski is having a hearty mid-day meal. He's
42 and in his fourth term as mayor for a cluster of villages on the
Polish-Belarusian border. His family is one of the oldest and most respected
in Tokary - his grandfather was granted land here in recognition for
fighting against the Germans in World War II.

Wichowski's mother, Antonina Wichowska, 72, shuffles around the kitchen
serving pancakes and tea with lemon. Thanks to the mayor's efforts, his
parents' house - like 99 percent of households here - has running water and
electricity. And the village, like most others, has paved roads and
telephone booths.

But it is only half the picture. The other half peeks out from behind the
trees a few hundred meters away, in Belarusian Tokary. The Polish-Belarusian
border slices the village in two, and, as of 1 May, that border gained added
significance. With Polish Tokary now in the EU, its Belarusian twin - though
within walking distance - is worlds apart, and the border may additionally
become a dividing line between prosperity and stagnation.

EU membership has not been officially discussed for Belarus, or for another
of Poland's former Soviet neighbors, Ukraine. Some fear that Tokary's
impoverished Belarusian counterpart - and the villages like it that dot the
borderlands - will be sealed for years to come behind a new "iron curtain."

AN OPEN AND SHUT CASE

The frontier.

Antonina, perched on a wooden stool by the white-tile stove, says the best
thing her son ever did as mayor was to unite the two Tokarys, if only
briefly. Her husband, Konstanty, has four brothers on the Belarusian side of
the village and a sister in Brest. During the course of Konstanty's
lifetime, Tokary belonged to Poland, briefly to Germany, then to the Soviet
Union, again to Germany, and, finally returned - or half was - to Poland.

As mayor, Wichowski was able to open the border in Tokary on two occasions
during religious holidays, in the early 1990s. Prior to this, Konstanty had
not seen his relatives for 40 years. His wife and son had never met them.

"You should have seen it when we met again for the first time," Antonina
recounts. "We were all kissing each other and cursing those who had divided
us. My husband was crying. They [the relatives from Belarus] slept here; the
house was full with three generations of our family."

Things are more complicated now. To cross from one Tokary to the other,
Poles now need to go to Bialystok, the province's capital city 130
kilometers away, to get a visa. And the nearest border crossing is in
Polowce, 25 kilometers away.

Minority populations live on both sides of the border. There are Catholic
Belarusians and Orthodox Poles. In Tokary, as in many towns and villages in
this area, a Catholic church and an Orthodox chapel coexist. Despite past
misunderstandings, the Catholic and Orthodox adherents of today attend each
other's services, especially weddings, funerals, and major religious
holidays. Many villagers here speak a local dialect, a mixture of Polish,
Ukrainian, and Belarusian, and on the Belarusian side, some still speak
Polish.

HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVES

A mile into the forest, a little past a sky-blue Orthodox chapel, a razed
tract of earth stretches like a phantom road. From behind an iron gate,
Belarusian Tokary is visible through the trees. Occasionally, the border
patrol rumbles by in a jeep.

Ireneusz Koziejuk by Tokary's Orthodox church.

Ireneusz Koziejuk, 35, an Orthodox priest based in Polish Tokary, says he
sometimes sees people driving up with old maps and waiting. "They sleep in
their cars, and in the morning they are baffled as to why the gate is not
rising. [I imagine] it used to be so nice, people going back and forth, back
and forth. Now that's just a memory."

The border crossing between the two Tokarys was officially closed in 1948
after the turmoil of World War II - though a crossing operated regularly on
special occasions. When Poland became a democracy in 1989, the border was
again firmly secured until the mayor was occasionally allowed to open it
again.

At least at first sight, Belarusian Tokary looks no different than Polish
Tokary. In a wooden house that's only 10 years his junior, Jan Gorbaczuk,
78, looks at the telephone, his gaze mixing resignation and sadness. "These
were my friends, my guys," he says of his lost relatives and neighbors. "We
used to go see girls together. Now I don't even have a telephone number for
Kostek [Konstanty Wichowski]." Jan and Konstanty's fathers were brothers.

Maria Zajec, who runs the kolkhoz, the village collective farm of about 160
workers, says financial reality won't allow villagers like Gorbaczuk to
visit Poland. Belarusians live on an average monthly salary of $50, and a
single-entry visa costs $12.

"The European Union will not do us any good," she announces categorically
standing in her driveway. "We won't be going to Brest anytime soon to get a
visa, because most people here don't even have a car, and if we did, we
couldn't afford to pay the [visa] fee."

Zajec, in her late 40s, believes the West is out to exploit countries from
the former Eastern Bloc. "We'll all become their slaves," she says. "The
West doesn't need your goods. It only needs your land and labor."

"But if I had the choice," Zajec adds quickly, "I would like to live in
Poland. I often watch Polish soap operas on TV. It's so nice there. In
Poland you can be the master of your own life. There is something to look
forward to. Here, it's the collective."

By the fence of Zajec's house, an old woman pushes a rusted bicycle down the
asphalt road. Weronika Samczuk, 78, got married three months before the
border closed in 1948. Her house, which stood in the borderline strip, was
dismantled. She was stuck with her husband in Belarus and never made it back
to Poland. "Please, tell me how everyone on the other side is," she
implores.

Mayor Wichowski calls the closing of the border in Tokary "a mistake." For
years he has been working to re-open the crossing. "I feel like Don Quixote
tilting at windmills, especially now that the European Union is here," he
says. "The new visa regulations have created so many problems. Contacts
between people [on both sides of the village] used to be easier. Today it's
worse than ever before. People have stopped visiting each other.

"Contact with the Belarusian border region is one of my priorities as
mayor," he adds.

SERVING COWS IN APRONS

Kazimierz Zalewski in front of his house.

Wearing a stretched, gray sweater marked with holes and pieces of earth,
Kazimierz Zalewski, the Tokary village administrator or soltys, has just
finished mucking out the pigsty. He smiles heartily from under his thick
moustache when he speaks. Zalewski, 48, has 23 hectares of poor-quality
farmland from which he must sustain his wife, their six children, and his
parents. He produces about 80 percent of the food his family needs on his
farm.

According to Zalewski, farmers in Tokary are not enthusiastic about the
changes the EU is to bring.

"They don't have any hope," he says, pulling on his moustache as he stands
on the steps of his white-brick house. "They don't believe in the EU."

Zalewski says the EU will be beneficial for Warsaw, but not for fringe
villages like Tokary, citing the cumbersome regulations that farmers must
fulfill to operate in the new market as the main reason for his pessimism.
Using his own case as an example, the soltys says he might have to give up
milk production and sell his four cows, even though they now bring him about
$250 per month in income through milk sales. He simply can't afford to build
the modern, roofed cowshed separate from other buildings in his farmyard
that EU regulations dictate.

"This is baloney," he sneers. "What are we supposed to do? Take care of the
cows in white aprons?"

EU membership will bring with it EU agricultural subsidies, but at only half
the level that Western farmers receive. That inequality will continue until
2013, when subsidies will finally level up. According to a study by the
European Commission, Zalewski and other local farmers like him can count on
receiving up to $300 a month.

SURVIVING, NOT THRIVING

With or without the subsidies, people in Tokary are trying to make do. Some
have jobs in the neighboring village of Adamowo, where they're helping
expand the local oil pumping station, a part of the "Friendship" pipeline
that runs from Russia to central Poland. Others work at the post office or
at the juice plant Hortex in the town of Siemiatycze, 30 kilometers away.
Still others cultivate their own small plots of land. But many, Zalewski
says, have already left.

For some, it all comes back to the dormant border crossing.

"Young people leave because they don't see a future here," Bohdan Sawicki,
the village's Catholic priest, says. "I am quietly hoping that the border
crossing will reopen here in Tokary. This would mean increased movement and
trade, hence a hope for monetary gains. People here are strong, capable.
They just need a chance."

Without a border crossing, the 48-year-old priest says, this village may
die. Only two baptisms were celebrated this year, but he's presided over
four funerals.

Jan Gorbaczuk, of Belarusian Tokary, waits for a phone call from his
relatives.

Despite ambivalence about both their future in the EU and the increasing
formalization of the dividing line between the two Tokarys, people here
still chose to vote yes in the referendum on Poland's accession to the EU in
June 2003. Anemic turnout aside, 67 percent of villagers in border towns
like Tokary who did choose to go to the polling station cast a yes vote. And
in April, Mayor Wichowski hired two advisors to help local farmers fill out
paperwork for EU projects and subsidies.

But even the optimistic Wichowski sounds worried about the future of the
tiny place where he was born. The divided village's Polish part - even
though it is most certainly better off than its Belarusian twin - is still a
long way from prosperity. While he busies himself with learning how to fill
out forms for EU benefits, Wichowski says he sometimes wonders about the
wisdom of it all. Maybe if villagers in the Belarusian and Polish parts of
Tokary were given the chance to stick together, Wichowski muses back in his
office, both Tokarys could make it.

"When a poor guy gets together with another poor guy, they both get rich,"
he says, coining an aphorism. "But when a poor guy gets together with rich
guys, the poor man only gets poorer."

Homes plan for former Polish camp thrown out

Wednesday, December 23, 2009, 14:23

MAJOR plans to build 450 homes, retail and employment units on a former
Polish refugee camp at Newton Abbot have been thrown out despite offering up
to 1,000 new jobs.

Trago Mills boss Bruce Robertson was among the dozens of objectors to the
'inappropriate and opportunistic' plans submitted by Arnold White Estates.

Councillors voted almost unanimously to refuse permission for the plans
which include a new road network, and a biomass power station on the 91
acres of land owned by mineral giants Sibelco.

But AWE say the project would provide much-needed housing and employment for
Teignbridge and it is likely they will appeal.

Teignbridge Council's development control committee heard AWE had offered
only 15 per cent affordable housing, instead of the 40 per cent required by
the council, blaming the recession for the low percentage.

Development control committee chairman Cllr Howard Milton said: "I do
believe this application is inappropriate and opportunistic. The offer of 15
per cent affordable housing is insufficient."

Councillors also heard AWE was millions of pounds short of covering the
costs associated with necessary infrastructure improvements including water
treatment works and not enough provision had been made for education or
community facilities.

Councillors were also shocked to hear the homes could be demolished if and
when Sibelco needed to access minerals underneath the site as they own the
right to mine the land.

So far more than 50 people, including dozens of Trago employees, have
objected to the plans.

Cllr Humphrey Clemens said he was baffled at the developers' decision to
spend money creating a community only to 'knock it down'.

He asked councillors: "Would you buy a freehold property with that hanging
over you? If it could be established one day that these minerals will be
needed then the land should be left well alone."

Natural England and Devon County Highways also objected to the scheme which
includes a network of roads and several new roundabouts creating a diversion
of the A382.

Trago chairman Mr Robertson told the committee he was concerned on highways
grounds believing the re-routing of the road network would lead to long
tailbacks.

"The route is very congested at times already. The problem is one of
geography."

AWE representative Rebecca McAlistar hit back at Teignbridge Council saying:
"We have had to appeal after every application we have submitted to
Teignbridge at great cost to us and to the council, and we have won six of
those appeals.

"I know traffic is a major issue and Trago Mills is a major generator of
traffic on the A382 and the A38, but they have not contributed to improving
traffic conditions.

"Without the improvements in this proposal the situation will get a lot
worse."

AWE has already secured planning permission for a service station, budget
hotel and pub and a 300-pitch caravan park in the vicinity of Ilford Park.

Demolition of the former Polish camp has already begun. However, the new
plans would do away with the caravans.

Speaking after the meeting Mr Robertson, who has just invested 10.5million
on a new gardening centre at Trago, said: "I would be surprised if AWE

Donna,
I had a look at the Russian lists of the repressed with Sokol Stanislaw's name.
There are several Sokols and one who might be Stanislaw from Pietrakow nr Pinsk
(no age given or father's name either)seems to fit some of the description.
There is no mention of Stanislaw Sokol son Wojciecha.
Was arrested in Pinsk on 29th December 1939 , sentenced to 8years of ITL (hard
labour) and deported to Workutalag. Amnestied and released as far as I can
gather; eventually rehabilitated on 6th June 1989 by the National Procurator in
Brzesc, where his details of arrest are held. In Polish Karta records there is a
mention of Stanislaw Sokol son Piotra born 1916 but nothing else so far.

Why not write to Karta and Memorial in Moscow for further details.

I found this

http://wolyn. ovh.org/opisy/ dubowka-09. html

but not much detail here – how many people etc

I want to get some detail – maybe photos of place

My mothers sister Wanda was born here and died here as an infant. Wandzia
is a ghost haunting me – I have no date of birth or death – i am guessing
she was between my mother and her brother Jurek – somewhere between 1919 and
1926 -- but i know nothing more

My grandfather was teacher here until 1928 the family moved to Krakow when
Dzadek became the head accountant at the Monopol Spiritusowy there

Czarist Origins of Communism
....Perhaps the most dangerous aspect of Great Russian nationalism was the
ideology of Pan-Slavism. Russophile thinkers often argued that all of the Slavic
peoples ought to live under the rule of the Czar, and become assimilated to
Russian culture and religion. Pan-Slavism provided a recurring impetus for war
with Turkey and Austria-Hungary, both of which contained large Slavic
minorities.

(It should give one pause to realize that in 1945, Stalin's conquests
essentially completed the Pan-Slavists' programs) !!!!!

Hello Donna welcome to the group. In Bitwa o Monte Cassino Vol III on pg 278
there is mention of a PCHR Sokol 6 Panc (PCHR is abbr for PODCHORAZY Officer
Cadet). Do you have any photos of him standing or sitting on an armored vehicle?
I've books with photos of the 6 Armoured Regiment(Dzieci Lwowskich)some in
Piedimonte 1944 and at the Loreto parade 1946 that I can scan for you, might be
able to give you some context about his life in Italy. Can you scan and send a
photo? Use your Yahoo e-mail.

Hi Donna,
Welcome to the group. You mentioned that your dad was wounded at Piedimonte. I
was in the 12 Podolski Lancers Rgmt and remember that battle very well. It was
the second line of German defense about 10 km north of Monte Cassino. The
trouble was that when our artillery practically pulverized the town, there was a
lot of rubble from the destroyed houses and our tanks could move through the
rubble and got stuck. Germans had several Panther tanks that could kill our
Shermans easily. So, our tanks were like sitting ducks exposed to German fire
and the 6th Tank Rgmt suffered heavy losses. There is a monument at Piedimonte
to honor soldiers from the 6th Rgmt who were killed there (see attachments).
Pozdrowienia

Dear Donna,

It is a small world. Your father probably met my grandfather who was a medical
orderly at 5 (Polish) Casualty Clearing Station. He was working in the reception
so more than likely was one of the first to meet your father as they brought him
in. The hospital was stationed at Venafro during the Cassino/Piedmonte battles.

Best regards, Mark Ostrowski

By the way, Happy New Year to you and the Group.

Hey Mark could I impose upon you to provide a brief synopsis of the referance to
PCHR Sokol in Bitwa o Monte Cassino Vol III on pg 278? There's an even chance
it's him and I would like to include it in a scan those pages that I would like
to send.

Even though I did comparative Slavic studies at university I resisted
doing any Cyrillic (call it the obstinant Western Slav in me) until I ran
out of units in 4th year and had no option but to do OLD Church Slavonic

Then it was a crash course (1 week) of learning to read Cyrillic I can
real but it is slow and tiring process

Where many Kresowiacy migrated to the area from other parts of Poland my
family are rodowici Kresowiacy so when I read Trilogia I think that some
of my forefathers were in those historical events

I have this badge in amongst my father Jan Lewcun's memorabilia from the war,
though he was in the 1st/11th Signals. I always wondered what it was and what
the initials stood for. Maybe it was given to him if he was attached to the
5th Kresowa as a signaller. Can anyone out there confirm if this sort of thing
happened?

Frank, thank you for that.

Would anyone in the group be able to identify the sleeve emblem on the man
in uniform 3mins, 15 seconds in? He seems to have walked in front of the
camera, so it's quite close up.

It's the only thing on his sleeve, apart from the Poland flash, a dark
buffalo/bull on a white background.

I would appreciate any help.

Many thanks

I am also reasonably sure that the Sokol mentioned on Page 278 is Donna’s
father. She mentioned that her father was wounded on 23rd May. Page 278 is part
of Chapter198 “The Attack of 23 May " the Death of Captain Kuczma”. Page
278 It doesn’t say much. The reference you give is a list of the 15 tanks that
were put out of action during the assault. Pchor Sokol’s tank immobilised by
enemy fire. Wankowicz uses the word “pocisk” which would indicate an
explosiveshell/panzerfaust. Possibly by the sunken Panther tank in the area or
by anti-tank artillery.

Further to this, and this is very cool, if you look at Page 247 there is a photo
of his tank in action, firing on “Durlik’s Tower” in Piedimonte (named
after 2nd Lt Durlik who was stuck in the tower earlier with his assault group).
Sokol’s tank has the name “Msciciel” " “The Avenger” By the way, all
the tanks in the assault group had names beginning with M... Morus, Merkury,
Magnat, Maczuga painted in large blue letters. This would put the them in the
3rd Squadron of 6th Armoured Regiment. This would also give them a blue circle
on the turret too.

If you look at Page 258 there is a overview map of the assault showing the
position of Pchor Sokol’s tank [Number 7 on the plan]

Best regards, Mark Ostrowski

PS,
By the way for anyone who’s interested, 2nd Armoured Brigade tanks were named
as follows:

4th Regiment HQ/recce Squadron names with G (Regimental colour Red) Turret
Diamond
1 Squadron names with T Turret Triangle
2 Squadron names with p Turret Square
3 Squadron names with ? Turret Circle [Still working on this one!]

1st Regiment HQ/recce Squadron names with K (Regimental colour Yellow) Turret
Diamond
1 Squadron names with B Turret Triangle
2 Squadron names with R Turret Square
3 Squadron names with Z Turret Circle

6th Regiment HQ/recce Squadron names with L (Regimental colour Blue) Turret
Diamond
1 Squadron names with P Turret Triangle
2 Squadron names with J Turret Square
3 Squadron names with M Turret Circle

This might be of some help in photo recognition.
