Superb, Antoni! You come through yet again.
I tried both Hal~ucha (pasting the accented l) and Galuch (with and without the
accent on the l) at http://www.straty.pl/ but got nothing. I saw no place where
I could use the ID numbers that you provided.
I have also e-mailed Karta ( there are contacts listed at
http://www.karta.org.pl/ ) in hopes they can assist me, using the information
you bestowed.
Can you advise me what other avenues I could explore to get more details?
Should I be writing a snail-mail letter rather than relying on e-mail?
I wrote in English since Karta provides English versions of many of its web
pages, but should I be subjecting them to my terrible Polish-language efforts?
Thanks again, Antoni. Don't you ever sleep?

John, it is very important to look at all sorts of possibilities in
spelling family names and especialli when translating from Cyrillic.

On this issue I would like to mention that KARTA also follow this principle.

In your case Pani Irena guided you to a source of search.

Here again when using Karta site one must use Polish fonts otherwise it will not
work.

Your uncles details can be found in Karta with an ID 39363 for Jan son Jakuba
born 1915 and arrested in 1941.

For Jakub son Jakuba born 1919 and arrested in 1941 with an ID 39362. Please
contact Osrodek Karta for details of their files. Use the names of GALUCH
(?????).

This Marian has taken a stand and has called himself Marion Lush obviously
taking no chances with Marian.
I must confess that I and my generation has danced to his music. Not what I

It would be helpful to know what language the marriage certificate was
written in. If it was not written in Polish, it is possible that the
name was translated into the language of the certificate.

John,
thank you for your kind words and I am sorry you are having a little struggle.
In Straty there are
Galuch ,Marian son Antoniego/Marii b 11-2-1921 at Dabrowa Gornica ref
P0111113381 deported into German territory on 01-04-1940 till 01-04-1945 details
at UDSKIOR

Halucha Antoni syn Jana/Katarzyny born 31-03-1921 at Horyniec deported to
Germany 01-07-1942 till 01-04-1945 UDSKIOR P1032001651

deported to Germany on 01-09-1941 till01-04-1945.

I think that the Straty site is good and Karta give so much detail--if
available.

To contact Karta is easy, but the replies do not come swiftly.
It is good to write to them in Polish, but you can send an English e-mail to
Pani Katarzyna Janiak at k.janiak@...
Some KS members have been in contact with her and had replies. Please give as
much detail as possible to identify the person you are asking about.
Naturally, if you have a friend in Warsaw then they too can visit Karta

New Year greetings to all.
Many thanks Lucyna for recommending researcher Agnieszka Modrzejewska.
I received my package of documents on Christmas Eve. Copies of
documents covering the unit in which my Husband served,
dating from Christmas 1942 through Iraq, Palestine, Egypt, Italy ending
in the UK 1947.
It was strange that here I was, at Christmas 2007, looking at a report
from Christmas 1942.
We can only imagine what a wonderful Christmas that must have been for
them all.

I was disappointed that Agnieszka was unable to find anything of a
personal nature. I had hoped there might be a citation for
Tadek's medal - Cross of Merit with swords.
I have translated the Christmas report to the best of my ability but
there are some words that I have been unable to find in my
Polish dictionary or my book of verbs therefore some parts don't make
sense.
If I scan the pages, is there some kind person who would translate them
for me?

Also is there anyone in the group who knows about 2nd corps badges and
insignia?
I need help to identify some in Tadek's collection.

By the way have you contacted RAF Northolt for military records

You should get it for free. For relatives other than spouses there are
costs

This is their email and they have the military records of all the Polish

They are very helpful and efficient

Hi Antoni,

I'm really new to all this so I haven't looked anywhere else. My uncle applied
for those
records as he is the next of kin. I will look into whether there might be more
out there, it
would certainly be very useful to find more information as so little is known
about him -
he died when my father and uncle were very young.

Thanks so much for your help, Helen.

Antoni:
As usual, your posts are laden with delicious information. I took the liberty of
mentioning your name when I sent my message to Katarzyna Janiak, because I'm
sure you enjoy respect at Karta in at least equal measure as on this site.
The people you named here are not familiar to me, but Horyniec is in the Mlodow
neighbourhood so Antoni is probably my father's and uncle's cousin. Certainly,
these names will go into my growing file of new information to explore.
Thank you very much.

Is anyone able to tell how long I might wait before getting information from

have not received anything. I have been waiting since November 28. Is this
normal? Have I missed something?

I made my initial request on Dec. 4 and the information was put in the mail
exactly a week later, Dec. 11. It arrived at my home a few days later. Perhaps
my situation was extraordinarily simple and was easy to accommodate so quickly;
certainly, the response I received was cheerful in addition to being highly
professional and quick.
I don't know with whom you were connecting, but on the advice of members of this
forum (especially Antoni) I contacted Irena Czernichowska at

Hello Elzunia,
Thank you so much for the speedy reply to my request for SEC.
I will look forward to hearing from you- I know I must be patient
but I just wish I could find a breakthrough to my searches.
Like Michael used to say to me "be patient Dear there is always a
silver lining round the corner".
  Kind Regards,

Carol,
it occured to me following my answer to your questions regarding delayed answers
from Memorial in Moscow, that if one sends a request by e-mail the
Stowarzyszenie Memorialu tend to ignore it, but when a request is in writing in
a letter form, then they regard it as proof that a genuine relative is looking
for an answer. E-mail is not a proof of identity. I read this long time
ago--just cannot recollect where, for the time being. Please write in Polish and
the address on the letter/envelope can be in English.
Have any of our members had a similar experience?
I mean delayed reply from Memorial or even a reply to an e-mail.

Antoni,

I did write and mail to them. I had tried to email and the link didn't work. I
think it may have something to do with the holidays. Not to mention you said it
could take 6 months, it's only been 4.

I will let you know if I recieve anything and give them a few more months.

   Thank you, Carol Celinska Dove

Antoni,

I think this is indeed the case as I have made two requests by e-mail but have
not had any response. What you say does make sense with regard to e-mail being
no proof of identity. I shall also follow the advice you have given to Carol
and see what happens. I'll feed back to the group if and when I get any further

John, Antoni,

I just thought I'd let you know that I received a response today from Pani
Janiak from Karta. She replied very promptly to my e-mail. Her English is
excellent! She confirmed to me that Karta holds only the basic details regarding
my Grandfather, Kazimierz Gwozdz, but has helpfully informed me that his records
are stored in the Belarus archives. Pani Janiak directed me to write to the
Polish Consulate in Grodno, Belarus and says that they will assist me in
obtaining details from the files.

Pani Janiak gave me the full address for the consulatein Grodno if any other
group members are interested.

A word of caution though - her e-mail arrived in my 'spam' box. If you have
e-mailed remember to check your spam/junk mail box just in case your reply ends
up there too!

And so my search goes on!

Regards

Lucyna

John,
thank you for your kind words and I am sorry you are having a little struggle.
In Straty there are

I think that the Straty site is good and Karta give so much detail--if
available.

To contact Karta is easy, but the replies do not come swiftly.
It is good to write to them in Polish, but you can send an English e-mail to
Pani Katarzyna Janiak at k.janiak@karta. org.pl

Hi Group

I am looking for a location in Poland. My great grandmother of surname,
Filimowski/Lehner was born 07/04/1882 in Pobog, Filimowskich. I do not knoew if
this is the correct spelling as the handwriting is very old. also sorry but i
do not speak polish. Any information on this area would be fantastic.

Also any information on her Uncle Leonardo Tarnowski & Aunt Wincenta and Marian
Tarnowski from an unknown area of residence. The writing states a Ledichowski
refugee camp near a castle in maybe Olomnia? This is all the info I have.

thank you

Michelle.

Hi Folks

Just to let you know the Certificate of Kinship that is posted else
where on the site is still required but they have tightened up the
rules here as of the Data Protection Act.

Proof required is as follows

Death Certificate of ex-serviceman (in the case of the widow)

Birth Certificate (children) + Death certificate of mother if
applicable or written consent if informatin is to be released to a
person other than the widow

Any other documents, which will prove kinship

Photocopies are acceptable!

For example as I am the grandchild I am required to supply death
certificates of both Grandparents, my mothers birth and wedding
certificates as different name and a written letter from her as the
next of kin giving authority to release the documents to me.

Also there is a charge of Ł30 sterling (widows of exservicemen get
this free of charge), this can be paid by cheque, UK Postal Order or
International Money Order and made payable to the "Ministry of
Defence - Accounting Officer"

oh and the address is as follows if you require it and must be done
by letter

Ministry of Defence
APC Polish Enquiries
Building 28B, RAF Northolt
West End Road,
Ruislip, Middlesex HA4 6NG
(United Kingdom)

hope that helps

Paul

Jakub,
jest o wiele lepiej napisac do Konsulatu i Memorialu. E-maila czasami nie
odpowiadaja. Prosze pisac po Polsku do Moskwy i Kijowa i podac jak najwiecej
wiadomosci o osobie wyszukiwanej, podajac imiona i nazwiska, daty i miasto
urodzenia, miasto przezycia przed deportacja, daty wywiezienia, i gdzie byli w
Siberii.
Rowniez bardzo wazne podac ze Ty jestes rodzenstwem osoby wyszukiwanej.

Michelle,
judging from your description I imagine here we are not dealing with
deportations to Russia, but from Poland to some concentration/forced labour camp
in Germany from Western Poland. You mention camp Ledichow-- could it possibly be
Lellichow (Ledichowski refugee camp in your note). There is a place Ledykhov
near Lwow, but I am not sure if there was a refugee camp there.
Could you please also mention the period in time we are looking at ?
As regards Pobog ? could it be Pobórz, which is in Lódzkie wojewodztwo where
your grandmother was born. As regards Olomnia it is a mystery, as the only one I
am aware of is near St Petersburg. The other possible similarity is Slonim
castle, but no Ledichow there.
