Here are just a few random testimonies about archival documentary film: "For
Your Freedom and Ours" which shows what Polish people experienced in WW II .A
film which I think should be reviewed and seen by anyone talking and writing
about the 20 century tormented Polish history. This film is still available on
DVDs on the website: www.mdavideo.com Michael Adamski

"For Your Freedom and Ours" is an excellent film.J.Roy-Wojciechowski, Honorary

"For Your Freedom and Ours" is an excellent film, very well done. Our children
will finally see and understand what parents were talking about. It would be
nice if every library had it available for the students. L. Kozak, Tustin,

Has anyone had the 'pleasure' of flying into LVIV Airport in the last
few years?? Please tell me about it! Guess, if the only way to find
the answes that I need, is to go myself, then I'll try that way this
time, instead of Rzeszow, as last time.

I own this original WWII poster showing a Ukrainian Soldiers (probably a
Banderowcy member) as part of the German SS Units in Galicia.

So now, in 2008, to honor these SS Banderowcy units is quite painful to
those that suffered under their hands.

Dear Members

I've only just discovered, after looking at the back of a photo of my
great-grandfather, that he was born in a very small town called
Dziubolki, which is near Zolkwiew, about 30 kms north of the city of
Lwow.

Does anyone have any connections with or knowledge about this town?

I hope everyone has had a very enjoyable start to the New Year.

Dear Louise ~ Have you consulted the "Slownik Geograficzny" ? (on google) for
Dziubolki? I tried to do it for you but the site I used to use doesn't work of
me anymore for an unknown reason (to me) There is an alternate site with the
Slownik but it needs a DjVu plug in which I can't seem to download onto my
aging, 8years old, computer. However, the Slownik first came to my attention via
the Jewishgen group and is much used.

Let us know what you find. I am interested because my father was born in a
place in the same vicinity in the powiat of Sokal.

   Regards,
   Beata

Please bear in mind that there are more than one Dziubolki.
(Podlesnoye) or Dziubulki -both in Lwow region and very small places; some maps
do not show these -'villages'-I suppose. Zolkiew is the closes town.

Dear Louise,

Here is a 1935 map of your wioska (village) It is not that small actually.
It is spelled Dzibuki and it was a "Gmina" (Gm on the map) and it had a
post office (letter symbol on the map) . There were three churches in the
village. And there was a Folwark (Fw. On the map) which is a large farm
owned by usually a absentee landlord. Close by is a Leszniszwka ( circle
with deer horns on it and a letter L beside ) which is a Forester's home.
There is also a Gajwka (circle with horns and letter G. beside it) which is
a Game Warden's home).

Dzibuki is located about 12 km straight East of that much larger town of
kiew.

The little black squares are individual houses, buildings, barns, etc.. .
Probably one of those black squares is where he was born.

Happy New Year to everyone.

Regards

Zbigniew

Hi Linder
I flew into Lviv in Aug last year. The runway is very short!!!! but we
managed to stop in time. The airport is very small and the officials a bit
officious! Lots of filling out bits of paper and queuing, but I would go
again anytime. In fact I hope I will within the next 12 months. We were met
by Slav, who I think you have dealt with. The airport is very close to Lviv
and very convenient. We flew first to Warsaw and then on to Lviv all with
LOT airways. No complaints at all. Hope this helps

Dear Beata,Antoni and Zbigniew

Than you so much for your assistance. It is such a privilege being a
member of this group!

My grandma has typed Dziubolki kolo Zolkwi on the back of the photo
so I am pretty sure it is the Dziubolki near Lwow. My father's
family were all from the city of Lwow (or so I thought until now!).
When I did the Google search it did come up with other Dziubolki.

Zbigniew has sent me a fabulous map with incredible detail on it.
I'm assuming the town was fairly much the same as when he was born
in 1844? My 1770 map of Poland doesn't mention it but it does
mention Zulkiew which is in the same relative position to Lemberg as
Zolkwi is to Lwow.

The Slownik Geograficzny shows Zolkwi (now Zhuvkva) but doesn't
mention Dziubolki, nor does my 1994 map. More searching to do!

I am inspired now to write to the Lwow Archives and do a family
search and see what turns up.

Thank you again.

Morning,
Yes, we flew in Lviv Airport 18 months ago. There were no real problems. They
are sticklers regarding the amount of currency you have on you, and as long as
you fill in their currency form truthfully, there is absolutely no problem.
Otherwise like any other small airport. Hope you go well. Basia Garnier

Linder,

Copying DVD video is not that simple or easy as there are several different
formats and most of them a COPY PROTECTED.

It is a lot harder than copying the old low density music CD that only
occupied about 650 Mbytes of data.

One had to RIP the CD first then copy it to new CD.

The single sided, single Density DVD have about 4.7 Gbytes on them.

Same thing with DVD but lot more complex than CD becasue the DVD format
inventors had to make the process a lot more difficult for people to copy
right?

Your best bet is maybe to go to your local PC repair shop and ask them for
help and offer them some reasonable compensation. These guys are very
skillful at such things. You can copy it yourself but it will take a while
because you have to find out what DVD format you have DVD-R or DVD+R, is the
DVD in PAL or NTSC then is it DivX or etc. see what I mean ? If you are
sending it to Canada, it must be in NTSC format. PAL and NTSC are the
Television broadcast standard formats.

If you send it in PAL to Canada the person will not be able to play it at
all unless they have an expensive , or uncommon format TV DVD player.

To play a normal DVD in either a NTSC or PAL type DVD format in a Computer
DVD, one must have a special driver ( one has to buys such a thing as it
does not come free with Windows ) installed in the computer. Otherwise you
can't play it.

The other solution is you take several weeks to try to figure out all the
stuff you need to do to copy a DVD yourself.

Or ,. Go to a professional Video/Sound Studio and pay hundreds of whatever

I also recommend having this professionally copied because you may lose
something doing it yourself. Also when sending to Ukraine.....it must be PAL. I
had copies professionally done and told the Video company where I was sending
these tapes and they made a mistake by not using the right systen "PAL", and I
sent them not knowing and then of course my relatives had difficulties and
colour was lost on the movies. Very, very frustrating. Check this thoroughly
with your video duplicator.

Or ,. Go to a professional Video/Sound Studio and pay hundreds of whatever
currency you use in England, . These people will schedule you in , and in
several weeks you will get a copy.

Or, if you have the original Video camera tape, upload it into your PC
again, then create a new DVD in NTSC format for Canada.

hi

linder, i do alot of video copying to dvd and its not that difficult if you
have a stand alone dvd recorder and a video recorder.the tape of your family
etc wont carry any copyright protection on board so its just a straight
forward copy, for playing in canada , the canadians like ourselves in the uk
can
get multiformat dvd recorders cheaply . even to the problem of ntsc should be
overcome with these. the ukraine may use the pal format but the audio is set
to a different frequency than the uk.

if you require any further assistance in getting the film converted, please
feel free to mail me. theres also companies and individuals on the web that
does this service if you need the conversion done to ntsc.

best regards

mark

Hello all!

I am glad to have finally joined the Kresy-Siberia Group.

My mother, Maria Podolska, is an orphan from a small settlement in the Pinsk
region who was sent along with her father, mother and two sisters to a camp
in the Arckhangel region in 1940. She alone made it to Colonia Santa Rosa
before coming to the United States. She was quite young during this time as
she was born in 1936. Her memories are pretty good, but there is a lot of
mystery about our family.

I came across this group some time ago when searching for information on the
Colonia Santa Rosa or other things my mother had mentioned. I have been in
touch with a few members including Julian over the past year or so and
finally have time to join up and do some more research here. I can see there
is a LOT to read and I'll be doing a bit of searching and reading when I can
to see if I can find out what might have happened to the rest of our family.

We believe that Daniel Podolski, my grandfather, might have joined Anders
Army, but have no further information on him other than he is believed to be
deceased. We have no other solid information on the rest of the family,
except she believes her mother died in the Soviet Union. Of course we are
looking for any information on them and the rest of our family. I have found
Mom's name on several of the lists in the photo archives, but not the rest
of the family so far.

Anyway, I'll be reading a lot, and may ask a few questions here and there.

Thanks to all of you who are keeping this history alive! If Mom has anything
of interest to add I'll be sure to add to the efforts

Kevin,

Welcome to the group. Your mom was born the same year as my father. In Feb.
1940 they were sent to Siberia. My grandfather was also with Anders and we also
have our mysteries to sort through. My grandmother passed away shortly after
Siberia and my father made his back to England (where his father was) from So.
Africa. In 1951 they exiled to the USA. I reside in Connecticut where I was born
and raised. I hope we can help you along the path we are on.

Kevin,
Welcome to the group; as you know Podolski name is plentiful in Poland; it is
somewhat of a task to isolate your relatives as you have not given us patronymic
names. I attempted to list all those who, I beliewe were your relatives and you
will have to select them as well.
All were from Dobra Wola near Pinsk and were deported to two places in
Archangeskaja oblast.
To posiolek no 31--Pieriekop; arriving there on 22nd Feb. 1940; Train from
Dziatkowicze- Kobryn ?
Daniel 1912 s Pawla;
Restaw ? possibly Czeslaw? 1940 son Andrzeja born at posiolek.
Jozef 1926 son Boleslawa;
Alfreda 1939, c Daniela;
Anna 1914 c Michala;
Wasia 1938 c Andrzeja;
Eugenia 1928 c Bolslawa;
Maria 1924 c Bolelawa;
Maria 1936 c Daniela;
Stanislawa c Wincentego;
Jozefa 1892 c Jozefa.
All were 'amnestied' on 31st August 1941.

Second part of Podolski family from Dobra Wola deported on the same day/train, I
believe, but sent to posiolek no 33 at Glubokoje arriving on 22nd Feb 1940,
were;
Agata 1933 c Edwarda;
Anna-Danuta  1937 c Edwarda;
Maria 1910 c Stefana;
Zofia 1935 c Edwarda.
All were 'amnestied' on 31st August 1941.

Kevin, I might have missed someone; if so please let me know so that i can check
up in the RU list.

To all that offered help on my 'copy DVD' problem - I had some films
from my camcorder put onto DVD in PAL, about 4 years ago. On it, was
an interview wih the 'Mayor' of dad's village, BUT spoken in Ukranian,
which I don't speak! I needed to copy that DVD to send to a pal in
Canada to translate for me. This 'Mayor' has all the papers in front
of him regarding my family's arrest/deportation/sentence etc. I hear
him say place names I've heard before/family members names - and it's
been laying in a pile for 4 years!!! I even found a 2nd copy, ready
done

If I post a copy to Winnipeg, you just walk into a 'photo-shop' and
they change it into NSTC - clever stuff!

I'll keep everything that you all told me. I might not get out of
bother so easily next time.

If I've hit the 'jackpot'I'll tell you all.

Hi all,

I am still plodding on with researching my family history. I have managed to get
hold of his
war records but as I speak no Polish and am only armed with a Collins dictionary
it is proving
tough going!

Would anyone be willing to take a look at them for me? It is a 16 page A5
document but the
amount of text is very minimal. I have an electronic version so can email them.

If anyone would be willing to help me with translating these, please get in

Thanks, Helen Ochyra.

Sorry to hear about your parents Hela - I guess all the survivors are
getting to that age now that bad health is more the rule than the exception.

Shame about not getting the meeting organised, of course I should have
realised that silence was a message in itself.

I was sort of planning on coming over for it - I wonder how many other
members were too?

Is it too late to organise something else, in London instead?

Reactions? Suggestions? Please respond!!!

I am hoping that you may be able to advise me or at least send me in
the right direction, as I am trying to find out more about my Polish
family, as my late Grandfather rarely spoke about them and the war,
and why he could not go home after the war. I do not even know if we
have any family left in Poland.

I am trying to learn more about the country that I was denied the
opportunity to call home by war and communism, but a country which I
am proud to have as part of my heritage. I would also like to be able
to tell my two nieces about the Polish Grandfather they never knew
and why they should be proud to have Polish heritage.

I know very little about my Grandfather's heritage other than the
names of his parents his father's job and that his mother was
transported to Siberia in 1940.

My Grandfather's information is as follows

Ludwik Podolanski

Born -2nd August 1921

Place Podwoloczyska

Parents Marianne and Stanislawa Podolanski

Marianne Podolanski was a member and Captain in the Polish Police
Force and prior to 1940 lived in Lemberg

Stanislawa Podolanski was arrested at 2.00am, 13th April 1940.

At the time of her arrest by soviet authorities they were living in
Lemberg. In 1957 in an interview with a British newspaper on her
arrival she said that "On April 13, 1940 at 2.00am the house was
surrounded and I was arrested without warning, and the reason given
was that "Your husband is a captain in the Polish Police and your son
is in the Army". She was sent to the salt mines in Siberia, not sure
where exactly. He brother bribed Red Army officers to get her out in
1944/5.

We are not sure of the correct spelling of Stanislawa's maiden name
but we think it was Oborska or Oborski.

I do realise that Podwoloczyska is now in the Ukraine, but my family,
I believe had ties in Lublin, Krakow and Zacopane as well as Warsaw.
My late great grandfather died Marianne Podolanski died in Warsaw in
1970 we believe. He may have had family there we do not know about,
just as I know nothing about the family that we had before the war.

I hope that you can advise me where to look and research, or who I
may need to approach for further information. So that I may unpick
the mysteries of my families Polish past I hope that you are able to
point me in the right direction or give me some help and advice.
