Stefan: I have been diligently reviewing all messages. I am still missing
some contact with the town of Busk and the village of Krasne where my friend
Henryk Birecki comes from. His story is the subject of my book "Exiled to
Siberia" and I know he would be only too happy to find some contact. Klaus

Hi Anne,
The harshness and brutality of the typical experiences may help explain why your father was not keen to talk about them.

You can write in English to both Karta and Memorial.  You can send them both e-mails to get started.  Be sure to also e-mail the Hoover Institution in Stanford California (asking both about your father and about info on Wilno) and write for your father's Polish Second Corps military service records.

Information and instructions are all at http://www.aforgottenodyssey.com/reference.html

Good luck!

My question is whether I need to write in Polish to the MEMORIAL Society in Moscow and to the KARTA Centre in Warsaw? Where would I look to find addresses for these? I have read so many articles from the links I have found on the Forgotten Odyssey site and am amazed that anyone could possibly survive such brutal conditions and treatment.

The osady (settlements) around Brody were in the woj. Tornopol.

I have uploaded a detailed map and satellite photo montage of the Brody area, which locates both Ewa's Osada of Hallerczyn and mine (and Barbara K and Kathleen's) of Warszawka.

It is called Brody detail.ppt and is in the folder at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Kresy-Siberia/files/Maps/

By the way my father told me today that Warszawka was a "mixed' settlement.  It had an east-west road (to Radziwillów) where the military veterans received land grants and a north-south road (between Brody and Klekotów) where the civilians (like ours) purchased their plots.

Stefan Wisniowski

Hi Eve

The books don't seem to include any osady south of Wolyn. I don't know
if that means that there weren't any military settlements there or that
there aren't any survivors from there in England that could have
contributed articles. Any ideas Stefan or Paul?

(I am working on a list of Osady, will be ready one of these days.)

Please welcome Barb Kwietniowski to the group. barb is Kathleen Brown's

Barb - thanks for writing a great introduction for other members.

From: "Barb Kwietniowski" <barbkwie@...>

My grandfather's name was Jozef Kurys. His family was originally from the
Nisko area. Due to his service in the first world war he received land, and
moved to Warszawka, a small village near Klekotow and Brody along with his
parents, Jan Kurys and Franciszka Oleksa .

There were six children
- Jozef 1899 - 1942,
- Maria 1901 - 1957,
- Aniela, 1904 - 1971,
- Valenty d.1994,
- Adam,
- Agnieszka, 1916

Before the second world war, Aniela emigrated to the U.S while Maria married
Joseph Klich and they emigrated to France leaving behind a son in the care
of his grandmother. Jozef married Ludwika Piastka (1906 – 1982) whose
family was originally from Makow Podhalanski in south central Poland. Her
parents were Jozef Piastka and Victoria Szczurek. Jozef died and Victoria
remarried a man with the last name Wicherek. They too lived in Warszawka.

Ludwika only had two sisters as far as we know, who both lived in Missouri.
Jozef and Ludwika had five children: Tadeusz (my dad), Czeslaw, Kostek,
Cela and Roza. My grandfather had been a soldier and worked for the KOP,
Korpus Ochrony Pogranicza, which likely led to his being included in the
first deportation to Siberia in February.

Jozef died of starvation in Taszkient, USSR and Ludwika was forced to leave
each of her children in turn, in various hospitals along the way, except for
Roza. Amazingly each of the children survived and eventually were reunited
with their mother.

Ludwika with Cela and Roza were transported to Africa and the boys were in
Egypt in the cadets. After the war, all of them lived in England,
originally in Melton Mowbray.

I'm sure that many of us heard stories of our family's experiences as we
grew up. I wish that I had paid more attention to the details that are now
so difficult to piece together. I am thrilled that the Internet has made it
possible for us to compare notes and access information. I am also thrilled
to have "met" Stefan whose family is from the same small village.

I would like to welcome Romuald Lipinski to the Group.  My grandfather's name was Wladyslaw Lipinski  who served in the army.  He married Stanislawa Kaminska and they had a farm on Osada  Hallerowa in Rowne, Wolyn. Eugenia, Edek, Zygmunt and Wladzia were their children's names. My Grandmother had a son, Mietek in a previous marriage.  Her husband died and then she remarried.  If this Wladyslaw is the same person this would mean that our family's are possibly related.

Welcome Romuald!

I think it is definitely worth writing to the parish in Brody, but it is
possible that their records are in the Archdiocese of Lubaczów in any case
due to the wartime disruptions.

Lubaczów was one of the few RC church centres in former Kresy that stayed in
Poland after the war and so had the surviving records from all the eastern
parishes sent there.

But I can not confirm that anybody has had a response in the past.

Paul and other members - do you have any information on that?

What a wonderful and respectful idea the Memorial Wall
is. I have had an e-mail from Eve telling me that she
has included my parent's names. The tears flowed, but
it makes me feel so good, to think that they will be
remembered. They, like thousands of others suffered
so much. I feel their pain. Why? I ask myself this
question so many times. There are no answers.

I encourage those who can, to forward the names of
their loved ones to Eve. Let there be an everlasting
memorial to all those who suffered these indignities
and may they all be remembered with love and honour.

Dear Group -
UPDATE YOUR ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE IMMEDIATELY.
DO NOT DOWNLOAD AN EMAIL YOU MAY RECEIVE FROM

This virus going around takes an address book and uses it as
a carrier.  It is called Bugbear, and it originated in Australia.

a Kresy-Siberia header and subject line.  This is the first time

Symantec has a fix for bugbear on its web-site.

I have uploaded some pictures of my grandfather Jozef Kurys into the
Kwietniowski folder. I believe that one is from the first world war
and the others are KOP pictures. Jozef was near the Romanian border
and from the writing on the back, it would seem he was stationed in
Paniowiec, Borszczow, which would put him in the Czortkow Regiment.
The picture shows his squadron. If anyone is familiar with the
uniforms and can confirm this, I would appreciate it. Our family was
fortunate that Jozef mailed pictures to his sister, Aniela
(Kathleen's grandmother) who lived in the U.S. and she kindly gave
them to us in the 60's.

Sally Boss of the Sarmatian Review has written to tell us about their
publication of the diaries of Zofia Ludwika Malachowska Ptasnik:

'A Polish Woman's Daily Struggle to Survive: Her Diary of Deportation,
Forced Labor, and Death in Kazakhstan: April 13, 1940-May 26, 1941"

Ptasnik perished in the Aktyubinsk Region of Kazakhstan, but her daily diary
was preserved by her son Mieczyslaw (now in Warszawa) and has now been
translated by Leszek M. Karpinski, and edited by John D. L. McIntosh, with
assistance from Bogdan Czaykowski and Kenneth Baulk .

Ptasnik's writings bring home not only the hardship, but also the
uncertainties about the fate of beloved family members that many of our
families endured.

They are being published by instalments. The first three parts so far are
on the Sarmatian Review website at:

Part 1 (Jan 2002): http://www.ruf.rice.edu/%7Esarmatia/102/221ptas.html

Part 2 (Apr 2002): http://www.ruf.rice.edu/%7Esarmatia/402/222ptas.html

Part 3 (Sep 2002): http://www.ruf.rice.edu/%7Esarmatia/902/223ptas.html

The Sarmatian Review, a triannual publication of the Polish Institute of
Houston, is a scholarly journal on the history, culture, and society of
Central and Eastern Europe, with strong attention to Poland, the post-Soviet
period, and American emigration and ethnic issues.

Recent issues have covered religion and state, the mass media, higher
education, literature, inter-ethnic relations, and government and politics.
The Sarmatian Review is published three times a year in January, April, and
September.

This e-mail was not sent from my computer, as I am on a Macintosh which is not affected by this viruses.

However, this sounds like the latest "bugbear" virus that seems to take messages filed in  your mailbox and just twist them a bit to make them seem legitimate.  The message Eve got was one found in our archives at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Kresy-Siberia/message/950 and was sent on April 8 from me to the group.

One of our group members has it in their saved mail.  The virus found it, changed the "from" address by putting a different back end on it.  Because the new domain is @australia.care2.com it is possible that this is from one of our members in Australia.

I have just had reports of other Kresy-Siberia messages being sent to people not on the list, and the senders e-mails were similarly "recombined".

Everybody please run an updated virus scan on your computers.  Please send any notifications of viruses to me at Kresy-Siberia-owner@yahoogroups.com rather than to the full list.

I also was almost infected but thanks to Norton it stopped it
Go to quarantine and kill this file it should be in the backup folder. I've also sent Stefan

This is a very dangerous virus as it stops firewall and AV software if it's not up to date

Hi,
Thank you stefan and Micheal for your help. Some explanation:
Moskalewszczyzna was the very small village where my Grand-Father and
my Uncle were born, as well as some other members of my Father's
family. I know for sure it was in Lepel powiat beacuse I have some
writen documents about the history of the family and I found this
information there.

Jelno you found, Micheal, can not be the one I was looking for. My
grand-father build there a mill on the river Jelenka. It has to be in
the Wilenszczyzna, in the Hermanowicze, Braslaw, Miory, Glebokie
region because this is where my family was located during the period
between the wars.

Why I'm asking these questions? I'm writng a book about my Father and
I want to have as much information as possible. My Father was 24
years old when Hitler and Stalin attacked Poland, he
was "zmobilizowany do" 13 Wilenski Pulk Kawalerii, in 1939 was first
time disarmed by the Soviets, then "internowany" by Lithouanians,
then worked legally and illegaly in Wilno, in July 1944 second time
disarmed by the Soviets and finally was forced ("repatriacja") to
leave everything and move to Poland. He was an architect, lived in
Poland, France and Canada and was very unusual, highly talented,
incredibly honest person.

I spent a week this summer in Bialorus and Wilno trying to find
something from the past and had a very emotional encounters with
people and places.

Thank-you Paul.
The pictures are in Photos/Members/Kwietniowski. One is called 3
szwadron and the other is called soldiers. The resolution is not
great so if they are unclear let me know and I can rescan and re-
upload.

Stefan,
I have looked at the map of Brody in the files and have the following
problems:
1. I have found Brody and Klekotow but cannot find Warszawka - I'm
told it would be spelled BAPWABKA. Can you tell me its proximity to
Klekotow or Brody? (My parents made me speak Polish but they didn't
think I would need Russian too!)
2. I was hoping to save the map and possibly print the part that I
need, to show my dad but I can only manage to save the top left hand
corner. Any suggestions?
3. My dad says he will work on a list of the names he remembers as
residents of Warszawka and on a map of the village.

Please welcome Eddy Pieniazek to the group.

Eddy, I still have some family survivors living in Slough (Berks), where
there a large community of Polish exiles settled after the war. Are you
connected at all with that Polish group?

My name is Eddy, I am based in Berkshire, UK, and my interests are in
exploring the events surrounding my mothers and grandmothers family (surname
Sobania), who were moved east from their lands in Targowice, Wolyn during
the war, and who then joined the 120,000 who were transferred via Tehran to
camps in Uganda (Masindi), before ending up in the UK.

Looking forward to participating in the group

Eddy

Hello Paul,
great to hear from you - I was going to contact you soon anyway as I
have recently come across your website, which is an awesome and
excellent effort. I am in Wokingham, so I am probably a much nearer
neighbour than you thought!

I expect the group members have already discussed many of the topics
I hope to raise, and maybe already have many answers to the questions
I have.

I look forward to joining in.
Eddy

Jannette: to your question about "place of choice".... in my interviews
with a number of people, many indicated preference for the U.S. as the
paradise of their imaginations. Few placed Canada as a priority, thinking
of it as stepping stone. However, once here, contentment and community and
family life and jobs kept them here. Helen.
