Dear Antoni, and everyone,

Thank you for your kind words.

Can I just point out that I didn't live on any of the camps and was born ten years after Hus Bos was shut down.  I'm coming to this history as someone who has heard her relatives talk about these places with the greatest of fondness. When I finally had the opportunity to visit the remains of the oboz, stand in the barrack that my parents and sister called home, see the remains of the church, talk to local people who remember this community, then I felt very strongly that this history had to be preserved - and not just because it the story of how my parents began life anew (after surviving the deportations and WW2). Here are the origins of the Polonia in the UK that I then grew up in - the clubs, the churches, the different organisations, the schools, Harcerstwo. This post-war history touches all of us, and its physicality is fast disappearing, because the National Assistance Board housed the refugees and their families on military bases that are now obsolete. There are no protection orders on the airfields, nor the outlying buildings. Hus Bos aerodrome has survived, to some extent, because it is home to the Coventry Gliding Club. Numerous outbuildings are standing, because local people have utilised them: the old church is a stable for horses, my parents barrack was a pigsty, the parachute-packers building is now a garage... I have flown over Hus Bos by glider and, for the reasons listed above, it is still possible to clearly see the footprint of the whole site. It's quite a rarity. As mentioned previously, other camps such as Lubbenham have completely disappeared.

I hope to continue recording the history of this camp for as long as there are people who want to share their memories. Although it is run-down and overgrown, there is something quite magical about the place.

Serdeczne pozdrowienia,
Halina

Dear Halina,
What an achievement and dedication in establishing your web and the description of life and history of this famous camp where you grew up.
CONGRATULATIONS!
I've just had a chance to look at some of it and marvel that you were able to collect so much memorable information about the life of Polish people. Your links to other camps are also important to all of us as we too had families there.

Dear Tadeusz,

The Melton Mowbray website does not belong to me, I'm afraid. It has been set up by the local library in the town, because people were coming in and asking for information about the oboz - and none existed in their archives!

The library wrote an article in a local English newspaper asking people to come forward with their memories of the camp. A friend of mine then read it and sent me the clipping out of interest. I then suggested to my sister that she should write about her time at Melton.

I believe that you can still submit

Dear all,
For the last year or so I've been collecting stories about life on the post-war camp of Husbands Bosworth in Northamptonshire  (which appears as Sulby Hostel in official documentation). Both sides of my family lived there, although for shorter periods they also resided at Ludford Magna, Northwick Park and Melton Mowbray camps.
Three of my articles were published this year in a local English paper - The Welford Bugle - about this Polish community. And I have now, subsequently, built a website around these pieces. (A fourth article is in the pipeline about Zaduszki on the camp).
I continue to collect people's stories in the hope of publishing a small booklet about Husbands Bosworth.
If anyone would like to contact me about this camp or with queries about my website, then that would be fantastic. My web URL is:
I've been a member of the KS-group for about the last 4/5 years and I know that the history of these resettlement camps has been referred to time and again. I believe this aspect of Polonia history is now re-emerging as the next generation of British-born Poles (like myself) starting asking how and why the Polish network (in the UK) came into existence.
Serdeczne pozdrowienia,
Halina Szulakowska UK

Dear Aniela,

I wonder if you remember a chap from Diddington school called Florian
Brodalka?

I'm afraid that I don't have any information about the Polish Hostel at
Maghull.

As to the address of the Husbands Bosworth camp... that's actually a tricky
one. The airfield was built straddling two counties: Leicestershire and
Northamptonshire. If you look at an old plan of the site, then you will find
that the main runway (now the Sibbertoft Road linking Welford and
Sibbertoft) roughly ran along the border of the two counties.

All the documentation that I have from this time, such as a copy of an
Alien's Registration Booklet, and severel summons letters to attend
interviews run by Immigration (held at the camp) have the address as the
"Polish Hostel Sulby".

The camp seems to have aquired the name Husbands Bosworth, because the
aerodrome was known as 'Husbands Bosworth Airfield' during the war. But
actually, all the administrative and dormitory buildings belonging to the
RAF, and which later became the five 'Sites' of the Polish oboz, fall inside
Northamptonshire. And I do have a letter from immigration addressed to Site
1 (where my family orginally lived) Polish Hostel Sulby, Northamptonshire.
It might be that some of the other sites were addressed as being
Leicestershire. And Husbands Bosworth does fall in Leics. whereas Sulby,
Sibbertoft and Welford are all Northants.

But, for example, my sister didn't even know the camp was called Polish
Hostel Sulby until I showed her the documentation. Poles called it "Hus Bos
camp" and that's how everyone knows it.

Sorry to be so long winded, but this is why I've used both terms for the
camp on my website.

Serdeczne pozdrowienia,
Halina

It is indeed!

I've had the pleasure of flying over the remains of the camp by glider. It
was a really nice thing to do.

Also, if anyone ever visits The Soaring Centre, go to the clubhouse and on
the wall (as you enter) you will see a framed selection of my family photos
with a short write-up about the camp. A friend of my is a gliding instructor
and it was his idea that we preserve a bit of the oboz 'memory' in this
fashion.

Lulu,
The maps are part of a large map of central Russia - war period issue - showing mainly a section of Trans-Siberian rail line from Moscow via Samara to Krasnoyarsk with a link from Archangielsk via Vologda, Vietka and Perm escaping the Ural Mountains. Perm to Krasnoyarsk section has practically all major stations marked up and named.
The other portion of the map is of Cental/Southern Russia from Tambor to Penza to Samara and Uralsk. This section includes very important places for us; namely Buzuluk and Tockoye by Samara (Kuybishev) where Gen. Anders started to form the Polish Forces. The circles are around Penza, Samara, Saratov and Carycyn. Saratov was linked up to Tatishchevo where Polish hospital was established and again it was a major joining point for Poles entering the Army.
Penza and Carycyn are incidental line changing places, in my view.
The names of places on the maps are of old style and many have been changed on modern maps. The placenames are useful to us as many people have some kind of documents marked in that style.
These maps cover the area of Russia and not the present day Kazachstan.
I hope this helps.

Helena,

I would call them and tell them you just received the great news about the conference and exhibit and that surely they can find one more seat somewhere if they some way object or say it is sold out. You might also say that you were referred by the California museum people who will be hosting the gulag exhibit next year just yesterday. So it is not your fault that you are registering late.

Also, I have a film (DVD) about the deportation and the gulags that I can send you (at no charge) to give to them as an offering if they find one more seat for you.

In addition, if all fails tell them that you have access to thousands on the internet and you don’t want them or the exhibit to receive any bad publicity.

Please be nice but firm and don’t take a no. You might think about it and rather then calling just go there in person and us all of the above.

If they can’t give you a meal tell them that is OK and just bring a sandwich and order some water.

By the way the notice sent to me stated that pre registration was required. I just received the notice and made it public.

Please keep us informed. Thank you

Hope this helps you, good luck and God Bless You.

Julek. I would like to attend the conference but I have a question.
You say preregistration is required.
The internet site you refer to says it's not required, but seating is
limited, and Oct 20 was the deadline to preregister for a meal.
What do you recommend doing, to insure a seat at the conference at this
late date?

Thanks.

Dear All
I'm doing a solo show about my Polish roots at the Arts Theatre in 6-7Great
Newport
Street, near Leicester Square, in London, on 22, 24, 29 November at 9pm.
In it I talk about my mother's and grandfather's time in Siberia. I did it at
the Edinburgh
Festival this August - resulting in my making barszcz 21 times in 3 weeks! (I
serve up
soup at the end of the show). The show's former title was To Be and To Have.
More details are at www.karolagajda.org.uk
Tickets are at www.ticketmaster.co.uk or tel 0870 060 1742
Best wishes

Well, I've just listened to the repeat of the interview on UK Radio
4,from this morning. I think that now I'm very confused!

Some fellow has followed the 'supposed' route the writer took [with
modern aids, [sat-nav, mobile phone, food, water etc]and was told,
almost at the end of his journey, that the writer couldn't have done
this 'long walk'. He was amazed to say the least.

Papers from Russian Archives, 'Memorial', Sikorski, NKVD, other
documents
show him to be in a different place, at a different time. Plus there
are two different versions of his background before 1939.

There was nothing about this in any papers he left with his family,
before he died 2 years ago. When he was with Alexander Topolski, at
a 'question & answer' night, he couldn't answer any direct questions
about this.

My conclusion; I still don't know of it's all true, but with back-up
papers from Sikorski, 'Memorial', NKVD, his Amensty + he filled in
the forms himself to join Ander's Army - what do we believe? But it's
a darn good story anyway.

It may be be on 'wwwbbc.co.uk/radio 4', to catch again,[half-hour] up
to 7 days from original recording.[Some progs are]

Well,it will boost book sales, if nothing else!

Maria,

Thank you for your e-mail

The film that I have is the film produced by Jagna Wright and Aneta Naszynska . It is called A forgotten Odyssey. You can order it from Jagna direct. She is a member of this group.

I am not sure of the price at the present time.

I have an extra copy or two but I wish to follow the Gulag exhibit in every place (city) that it will be presented and make sure that I have a copy to send to each location, if that location will use the copy during the gulag exhibit tour to try and tell the complete story.

From my understanding the exhibit is slanted in a fashion that does not tell a complete story and that the exhibit uses the gulags as a comparison. That is to say that the exhibit tries to compare the past US historical problems concerning the Japanese, Blacks and Indians with the people who were deported to the Russian Gulags.

Needless to say we all know this type of comparison should not be permitted because it is a false inaccurate comparison. I also know that the Japanese, Blacks and Indians suffered in the US at the hands of the US population and its government. The Japanese, Black and Indian suffering should be presented by each on each of their own merit rather then reducing the impact of the horrors that the Polish people and others suffered at the hands of the Russians. There is a major difference and none should be compared to the other.

I have not seen the exhibit myself, so I am only relying on past newspaper reports describing the exhibit and some personal contacts. I have spoken on many occasions to people in charge at the future exhibit site in California. I have had personal meetings with them and sent the above mentioned film to the people in charge. I also referred  books to them that I felt they should read regarding the gulags. I also received information from the people in charge in California that there is a comparison that is made as stated above but they feel that people viewing the exhibit understand the difference. Unless the exhibit makes it very clear I feel the exhibit will dilute the gulag experience while elevating the Japanese, Black and Indian experiences.

I hope someone representing the Polish people’s experiences will be asked to speak at any ceremony or discussions held during the time the exhibit runs in California. The people in charge in California have requested mementoes from or about the gulags to be loaned to them which I am trying to see how that can be arranged. I have asked if just photos will be sufficient.

Hi Julian. I'm Maria. I read you had a film about the deportation and the Gulags.

Well, as I'm carrying out a project on this topic, I'd be really interested in getting this video somehow.

Could you send it to me, please? Thanks in advance.

What do you recommend doing, to insure a seat at the conference at this
late date?

Thanks.

Yes, it is very helpful. I had always assumed that the circles marked places where my father, grandmother and great-grandfather were interred.

But now it seems that my grandmother has circled areas where the Polish army was forming.  My father, who was 17 at the time of the Amnesty, went on first. I am not sure where he first joined up, but I know from his Service history it was in the USSR on 26 September 1941. My grandmother stayed on to look after my great-grandfather who subsequently died. I have a Russian death certificate but cannot translate it, so I cannot ascertain where he died. I also have a Summons from the People’s Court addressed to my grandmother who was prosecuted for coming late to work (she worked as a seamstress in town), which may indicate where they were, but again, I cannot translate it. I also have a “Kwit” signed by a Br….  Kwiatkowsky? Dated 16 IV 1942 Semipalatinsk, which I know is one place they were in. I understand my father dug alabaster, but the maps on the site do not mention alabaster.

Linder Hello ;

Krystyna , here sorry to be interjecting into your correspondence, I am not an active member or something now, but still read some of the emails of interest.

I have heard of a young man who was born in Estonia of Estonian mother and Russian father found himself deported to some gulag in Syberiain in the 1940's, escaped walked back home. Re-arrested sent to the Syberian gulags ( we calll them that becasue the are sooo very far from Moscow, joke  ha ha ). Walked about en route to Europe and evetually to England. As much as I found this story told to me  interesting at the time I did not think it unususal. ( sorry the person who shared this is deceased and his wife who is this man's sister has Alzheimers. I will try to find him and verify his story now that we think it unusual/

My dearest mother walked  500 km to visit her sister in  the  Syberian country side  during winter. My mother  was a teenager and moved without permission or any papers.  She relates that one never stops walking or you'd fall asleep and freeze.. so do  keep walking no matter what. She did hitch a ride between wagon trains and hung on for dear life to something for a few miles to get away from her gulag. then she walked and walked. Consequently I have heard two stories and they sound plausible cause if one need to get away from HARM then one  just does with much purpose !!!
best of luck to sort this story out
Hugs and blessings

What fun!

I have never visited Hus Bos on the ground although I have flown over
it quite a few times in a glider, once or twice I got to inspect it
from very low down, but got away again. :-)
I used to fly from High Wycombe.

Elzunia,
Thank you for adding comments to the maps; also to say how well they are scanned and one can read practically all the station names after 67 years, at least, in the life of these maps. Map 2 is important as it shows how far East we had to travel into the depth of Russia because the Western lines were extremely busy with military traffic both to and from the front; so as not to interfere with the military trains. Traffic around Moscow was overloaded and dangerous because of possible attacs by the German forces. The result of all this was the extended time of travel, starvation, all sorts of health problem causing many unnecessary deaths especially for the weak.
Thank you Louise for sharing the maps with us.

This is the direct link to the BBC Radio 4 "listen again" service to
hear the programme. (You'll need to have Real Player installed.)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/mainframe.shtml?http://www.bbc.co.uk/
radio/aod/radio4_aod.shtml?radio4/thelongwalk

Normally, as Linder said, it remains available for 7 days after
broadcast.
Hope this may be of use,
                          Joe.

I want to intoduce myself. My name is Christopher Szymel. I go by
Chris. My father and his family are from Noworódek, Poland. Their
story is the same as a lot of people you see in this group. They were
deported to Syberia on Feb.10 1940. The reason I wanted to join this
group is to see if I could find out any information on what happened
to my grandfather. His name is Stanislaw Szymel. He was arrested on
October 9,1939. The last time they had any contact with him was just
before they were deported. My father, Zbigniew and his brother
Adam, and his two sisters, Zosia and Bogoslawa are still alive. They
are get up in age and I thought that maybe I could try to get them
some information on what happened to their father before it's to late.

That's all for now.
Cześć,
Chris

Welcome to the group Chris and best of luck in your search.  I have always wondered what happened to my grandfather as I was told that he was arrested in the labour camp and that's the last anyone heard of him.  I now have a better idea of what happened and where he died.   I plan to erect a memorial stone and place it on my grandmother's grave where she is buried in Poland.  .  It's too bad his family never knew what happened to him and now they are all gone too but at least I, his grand-daughter, have some closure.

Have you tried the karta indeks of the repressed ? http://www.indeks.kara.orgpl/    Press 'wyszukiwanie' and enter your grandfather's name.

By the way where do you live?
