Russians mark 61st anniversary of Victory over Nazism with parades and fireworks

The whole of Russia celebrated the 61st anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War which lasted for 1,418 days from 1941 till 1945. Moscow, the center of all V-Day festivities in Russia, started celebrating the holiday from the traditional grand Victory Day Parade on the Red Square. Over 5,700 servicemen took part in the parade.

Russian President Vladimir Putin today presided over the annual Red Square parade celebrating the Second World War victory over the Nazis. He paid homage to the elderly veterans who fought the battles that turned the tide for the anti-Hitler forces, but not once mentioned the Soviet Union’s allies.

Putin’s brief speech from a podium in front of Lenin’s Mausoleum reflected the current, uneasy period of discord with its one-time allies in the West. While the celebrations this year are unlikely to reach the level of last year, when the 60th anniversary of the war’s end brought 57 world leaders to Moscow, events to mark the date are nevertheless far-reaching. Television channels will air war movies and documentaries, opera houses are hosting concerts of patriotic songs, and a series of marches and parades will take place across the country, with the main event held traditionally on Red Square.

Putin called the holiday, Victory Day, “a day of great triumph of our people”. He said the war effort represented the people’s unity. “And history before had never seen such unity, such sacred brotherhood, such powerful faith in victory,” Putin said.

War veterans, Muscovites and guests of Moscow will have a possibility to attend numerous concerts and many other entertainment programs held all across the city today. Eleven special planes guarantee fine weather in the Russian capital. Each of the planes has been equipped with ecologically pure substances to make the clear-blue sky above Moscow and disperse clouds. Celebrations will end at 10:00 p.m. today with grand fireworks in many Russian cities such as Moscow, St.Petersburg, Volgograd, Novorossiisk, Tula, Smolensk, Murmansk and others.

Over the last year, much debate has been given to the topic of fascism, not just in its Nazi incarnation, but also a modern revival of its ideology, with some suggesting that it may be becoming a problem in Russia today.

Unlike most of the other holidays on the Russian calendar, this day is particularly important to the vast majority of Russians. It is a day when the remaining war veterans are given center stage, and one when Russians feel great pride in their country and the decisive role of the Red Army in defeating the Germans.

This weekend my wife and I are celebrating our 50th wedding
anniversary.  All of the family is here together for the first time
in more than 5 years.  (including my daughter who lives in Indiana
and my son who lives in Florida.)  We also are having close to 130
friends attend a party that our children are throwing for us,
complete with a Polish band and buffet spread.  That is on Saturday
night.  On Sunday afternoon I am proud to report that I will be one
of three recipients of the Siberian Cross at a special ceremony for
the 3rd of May at the White Eagles Hall in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
Next week my wife and I travel to Chicopee, Massachusetts to attend
the 60th anniversary of Fr. Krolikowski's ordination as a priest.

Below is a copy of my letter to the editor of the Connecticut Post.

As a reminder, here is the link to the original article, the author of which has
still not
responded to two of my emails asking for a correction:
http://www.connpost.com/ci_3756919

Here it is for those of you who'd like to write to the editor as well:

In her moving article "Witness To Horror", Susan Silvers refers to a Nazi German
concentration camp as a "Polish Concentration Camp".

Not only is this charecterization inaccurate, it is highly offensive, as many
Poles, Jews and
Christians alike, were murdered in concentration camps established and run by
German
Nazis.

The further and further away we move from the horrible events of WWII, and the
less and
less eyewitnesses that remain, the higher the danger of these types of
inacurracies serving
as revisions of history.

Recently a Jewish organization in Florida released a study demonstrating 63% of
a typical
United States city could not identify the infamous concentration camp called
Auschwitz.
(See: http://www.isfsp.org/press-study.html)

If one never heard of Auschwitz, he vey well may be susceptible to believing
inaccurate
information that tells him that the concentration camps were run by Poles.

I urge your writers to be more precise in their writings on history that is
remote to most
Americans.

In trying to keep with the objectives of the K-S group I have re-read the following statement and hope my subject falls into that category.

The "Kresy-Siberia Group" brings into contact people from countries around the world with a special interest in the tragedy of over one million Polish citizens of various faiths and ethnicities (Polish, Ukrainian, Belorussian, Catholic, Orthodox, Jewish, etc.) arrested or deported from eastern Poland (Kresy) in 1940-41 to special labour camps in Siberia, Kazakhstan and Soviet Asia.  The circumstances of their odyssey and the tragic history of the Polish citizens under Soviet occupation during the war was hushed up by the Allies during the war to protect the reputation of the Soviet Union, an important ally in the war against the Nazis.

Sixty years later the survivors have aged and many have died. With this list we hope to bring together surviving deportees and their descendants to remember, learn, discover and spread the word of their ordeal to the world and to future generations.

If this list group can play even a small role in that effort, it will have been an important achievement.

There is still a generation of  WW II survivors and their decendants in Belarus today.  Belarus is the last dictatorship in that part of the world.  Many in this group still have relatives in Belarus who are living under a repressive and oppressive regime.  As they strive to fight for their freedom they are imposed with more restrictions such as arrests of peaceful demonstrations and increases in the loss of freedoms such as free press.

In remembering and learning from the tragedy of Poland and the betrayal from its' allies, I'm hoping that we can bring more light to the situation in Belarus even if by writing letters to our own governments.  Can we contribute to keep the hope alive for the people of Belarus so that they can finally achieve their right to freedom.  Even though the Soviet Union has broken up, Russia strongly supports the regime in Belarus today.

The following site offers daily updates on the political situation in Belarus.

the latest posting on this site seems to indicate to me that the Soviet regime is still revered as saviours.

May 9, 2006 -- Belarusian President Alyaksandr Lukashenka marked the anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany by attacking the West for allegedly trying to destroy his country "from within."  The comments, made in a Victory Day speech, follow signs of support given by the United States and the European Union to the opposition following Lukashenka's reelection in a March poll deemed fraudulent by the West.  Also today, police detained three opposition activists handing out prodemocracy pamphlets to World War II veterans in Minsk.

For those people who live in Scotland or plan to go to the Edinburgh
fringe, I would to point out this excellent show. I saw it last year
in London when it was titled "To Be and to Have"

Basically Karola uses a combination of videos, stills, animation and
talking to the audience about her working class background and her
Polish roots whilst making Barszcz. It not all about her family in
Siberia (Mother) and under Nazi occupation (Father) but it is what the
show is about.

12pm

I also saw the performance, and thought it most moving and intelligent - the way she weaves in her mother's Siberian story is brilliant! More importantly, my sixteen year old daughter, as an Anglo-Polish child, truly identified with Karola's feelings. Well worth seeing.

I see that you joined the Polish Army in Dzal-Al-Abad on 9th March, 1942.  That is the day that my aunt's father, Kazimierz Puczko, died in Dzal-Al-Abad of typhus.  I wonder if you know anyone who was with the 5th Infantry Division.

Hello Lucyna:
Thank you for bring up timely topics. I can’t fault the Russians for wanting to celebrate their victory over Germany, but there is something missing in all of the Russian celebrations. Too many pieces of this puzzle are missing. Few if any Russians know of their role in starting WWII. How many speakers commemorated the fate of the 2 million plus Soviet  POWs who were forcibly returned to Russia by the allies? Or what ever happened to all the prisoners of war that the Russians captured? Did any Russians celebrate the “liberation” of Warsaw or Wilno or of Slovakia?

It is hard to join in a celebration of people who do not know their history and don’t want to know it.

Lucyna Artymiuk <lartymiuk@...> wrote:

It is an old Polish city with lots of wonderful history, roots, etc...

And yes, and I especially like the giant desolate statue the Russians left
behind after they ran off
in 1989 in the center of the city. It's a bit of a joke. Your typical

Most of the citizens wanted to tear it down, burn it, blow it up, but some smart

leave it as is, to remind them of the horrors it symbolized. So it remains as

I believe that Zbyszek is referring to the Pomnik Czynu Rewolucyjnego
(Revolutionary
Action Monument), which was erected by Polish Communists in Rzeszow in 1974.

According to Wikipedia, the First Secretary of the Communist Party in Rzeszow
came up
with the idea. The sculptor was also Polish, Marian Konieczny, who also designed
the
famous Nike in Warsaw.

Some have suggested it be demolished, others that it be used as a wall for
climbing...

My mother met a baker in Siberia.   He was originally a blacksmith but he converted to a Baker” in Siberia.  When asked why he was no longer a blacksmith, he said  “one can’t eat steel”.    Food was incredibly hard to come by in those Siberian places.  Unfortunately his surname was not Jankowski but ironically it was  “Twardochleb”.   First name was Franciszek.

Seems maybe a few more other Polish people “volunteered to be deported to Siberia so as not to be left alone , without their loved ones.  My uncle was one of them. When he saw the long procession of Polish Civilians, mothers, children, grandparents being herded by Russians (and others) through the open fields in the snow of Feb 10, 1940, he came out of the forest and went ‘willingly’ towards the unknown.

Lwów, now called Lviv, is/was a wonderful city with centuries of Polish people, Polish History, Polish  tradition,  Polish architecture, etc.  Ha, ha,  did I also say that it had a Polish name ?   Wish I could see it too.  Oh yes, it had a third name.  When we (Poland ) was occupied by the Austro –Hungarians, they called it Lemberg.  Here is a map of the old city from the era  (pre WWI)

All the best

Zbigniew
