Hala,

This list is great. Thanks for popsting it. I wish I could read the rest of it.  I'm sure it will help a great many people. Unfortunately I do not read or understand Polish.  My great uncle, Stanislaw Sielecki served in the Polish Regular Army with the rank of Colonel.  He was awarded the Legion of Merit by the U.S. Do you know where these records might be found, by any chance?  I have found a list of American recipients on the internet, but I have not been able to find a list or any information on the foreign recipients. Doe anyone else have any information on this? As of 1951 he was living at 37 W. Cromwell Rd. , London SW5.  I think he died not too long after this.  I am also trying to find out when he died and where he is buried.  My guess would be somewhere in the Kensington area.  I have already contacted the local Catholic churches, but they do not have any records of him.

Much Thanks,

Dear Group,

Centralne Archiwum Wojskowe =Central Military Archives in Warsaw has
published a list of 1,648 soldiers of the Polish Armed Forces
(Anders Army) who died in the West during World War II (a few died
after the end of the war) and whose personal effects and service
files were returned to Poland in July of 2003 by the British
Ministry of Defence (MoD).

The list can be found at:  http://caw.wp.mil.pl/  When the site
opens, (1) click on Depozyty in the menu on the left; (2) then, go
to the bottom of the page and click on the letter (of the surname);
(3) the information is listed under the following 5 columns: 1st--
Surname, name, & father's name; 2nd--Date of birth; 3rd--Place of
birth; 4th--Military rank; 5th column--Military awards.

Family members (friends?) may write to request the return of the
personal effects (mostly consisting of medals, personal letters,
photographs) and copies of military files.  If you want to make
inquiries, e-mail  caw@...  The Polish archivists are grateful
to MoD for the care they took of the artifacts.  They hope all
records of the Polish Armed Forces under British command are
returned to Poland soon.  The main purpose for establishing this
list was to honor the soldiers' sacrifice and to attempt to return
the personal effects to their families.

CAW states that the British Ministry of Defence has 295,446 personal
files of individuals who served in the Polish Armed Forces under
British command.  Obviously some are duplicates.  The statistical
breakdown of the files is as follows:
40%  Polish Relocation Corps
30%  Polish Land Forces under British command
10%  Polish Air Force under British command
13%  Wartime Courts
4%  Support Units
3%  Other Polish soldiers

It may be useful to know that CAW's earliest records are from 1908.

Your letter is very thought provoking.  Maybe you could also send it to the West Hollywood City Council (if that doesn't interfere with the publication of your letter in the newspaper), because the city council members are the ones who sponsored and got funds for the Soviet memorial to be built in their city.

Ref: West Hollywood Russian Soldier Monument

To who it may concern:

It is estimate that about 50 million people were killed by the
Soviet/Russian killing machine led by the butcher Stalin. It is hard
to comprehend that Russia's own military during this time also killed
millions of their own countrymen without much if any remorse. I hope
that those in West Hollywood who have commissioned this monument will
include the above information of Russian soldier's deeds.

Thousands Lithuanians, Latvians, Estonians, Poles, Ukrainians and
many other ethnic groups who were rounded up in the middle of the
night by Soviet soldiers, crammed into unheated cattle cars and
driven for weeks into the Godforsaken tundra or taiga to work or
starve to death. Today there are some that are still living in fear
of being deported to the Slave Labor Camps better known as Gulags.
Millions were killed, starved, suffered or worked to death for no
reason other then to give glory and power to Russia and Stalin. Some
survived this ordeal with no mental scars. Others have deep mental
scars, still living in fear, in silence, afraid that someone is
listing to their phone calls, watching their movements and looking at
their letters, even though they reside in free countries all over the
world. They have scars so deep that 50 years of physical freedom has
not removed these tormented mental scars. Will this also be a part of
the monument testimonial?

I find that no Russian political, government, military leader or
private citizen has stood trial for these inhuman acts (in the world
courts) which mostly took place from 1939 to 1991. I assume that
those in West Hollywood want to include this information with pride
that the world knows that 50 million people were killed but has
chosen to look the other way and condone these past deeds by their
own inaction.

Today, we see and hear of many other monuments and statues being
erected to honor Stalin and his military killing machine. Sadly this
particular monument is planned on United States soil. What does this
say about us?

Before we build these monuments and statues the least we should
expect from the Russian people, soldiers and their government is that
they show the world that they are truly sorry for their past. They
should ask for forgiveness. They should then prove that they are
truly sorry for their past deeds by joining the free nations of the
world and help humanity at their expense and public shame.
Unfortunately, the opposite is true, what we see today is that
Russia, its leaders and its citizens are turning towards their past
history.

I ask those in charge who approve the Russian monuments and
statues "are you sure that you want to attach your name to these
monuments and statues that honor the soldiers of those inhumane
deeds?" By you approving these monuments and statues you are in
effect condoning those past deeds.

By approving these monuments and statues you have set in motion your
personal endorsement which says to our youth and the current world
leaders that it is OK to continue the past killing tradition of
Stalin and his military. We will look the other way and erect you
monuments in the future.

As a survivor of the Russian Death/Slave Camps or Gulags I
respectfully ask that those in power, the media and all good Russian
citizens including past military and government leaders, please
review your past and present decisions. Please reflect on the above
items and please make a decision that you and future generations of
your country can be proud to live with.

Respectfully,

Julek Plowy

Hi Lonia,

you are right. Jazlowiec is a small town in county (powiat) Buczacz
province Tarnopol. In this town is located covent. This convet was saved by
14 Ulanow regiment during the battle between Polish and Ukrainians army.
This battle took place in July 1919. To celebrate this event 14 Ulnow
regiment received name "Jazlowieckich" In this convet was famous statue of
Virgin Mary. Now this statue is in another convent in a small village
called Niepokalanow 50 kilometrs away from Warsaw. After WW II the convet in
Jazlowiec was closed by Soviets and the nuns moved to Niepokalanow . In the
1990s it was opened again and now there are again nuns from Poland.

Best regards

Hi Jacek,

My grandfather was in this regiment [14 Pulk Ulanow Jazlowieckich]
and my mother has said that it was quite famous in some respect
though I'm uncertain exactly why. I would love to read this book
but I'm not able to read Polish - here's hoping it will eventually
be published in English.

There appears to have been some crossed messages on this thread [but
no one person is actually confused!]. It all probably started from
a reference I made to my grandfather's Osada - Jazlowiecka. And
this is a name that does generate its own share of confusion.
Specifically, when I started enquiring about Jazlowiecka I
discovered that were four names to the mix:

1. Osada Jazlowiecka - the proper name of the settlement.
2. Jazlowce - the informal name by which my mother refers to the
locality.
3. Jazlowieckich - the name of the regiment after which the
settlement is named [about 100 families] and I'm presuming in which
most of the settlers had served. [their land being an award for
military service]
4. Jazlowiec - a similar sounding name, but a town quite some
distance away from Jazlowce which I believe Zbyszek has described
[13998].

Thank you to the many members of the forum who have educated me on
these details and provided further information on my family's Osada.

Hello Pamela,

I think there are 3 sources of information that you could pursue:
  1. Centralne Archiwum Wojskowe e-mail caw@... where you could request your great uncle's (Stanislaw Sielecki) Polish military service records.  Just give them whatever information you have: his name and his father's name, place of birth, date of birth, with what unit he served, his rank, etc.  I would also ask if they have any of his personal effects or if they know where he is buried...they probably will not have/know but it never hurts to ask.  Mention the American Legion of Honor medal as they might have that list.  You can write in English.  Their response may take a while--I think it took about 4-5 months for them to respond to me.  Do not forget to include your address as they will send you paper copies of his service file.
  2. You have probably written to MoD/British Ministry of Defense.  If not, this URL will give you information on how to contact them: http://www.aforgottenodyssey.com/mainref.html#r4  They probably have dates of death and places of burial only for those who died during WWII but CAW stated that several of the soldiers on the "1,648" list died after the war, so it might be worthwhile to ask.
  3. I did not find a list of foreign recipients of the Legion of Merit medal but write to the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and ask where you should make your inquiries:

Have you been to the Sikorski Museum in London?  A little while ago, there was a message thread on this forum re the Sikorski Museum.  Someone is planning to go there and volunteered to look for information for others.  If you do not live near London; perhaps, you can add you request to that thread.

Good luck with your search.

Dear Group,

This list of soldiers, just on K-S - I'm pretty sure that it's the
same list, that 1 yr ago, was found buried at the RAF Polish HQ in
Scotland, UK. Mrs Berk [who took contents to Warsaw], rang me early
one morning to say that 'no, I couldn't have a copy of the list of
names for the K-S Group and the men were all RAF soldiers'. I
couldn't persude her. But, she did give me an address and said that
families would have to prove they were 'family' to get any
info/possesions of their loved ones. Same number of names to that,
that she told me. She led me to believe that they were all RAF men.

Thank you for your email.  I feel obliged to offer a clarification about the monument to be built honoring West Hollywood’s Russian-speaking veterans.

First of all, it is not a "war memorial." Secondly, it is not a memorial honoring the Red Army or the former Soviet Union. Finally, it is not attempt to gloss over the war time atrocities of the dictator Josef Stalin.

This will be a monument honoring American citizens - citizens who live in and around West Hollywood. It will honor their efforts as American allies in the defeat of fascism and their contributions our local community.

While these Americans may have fought in the Soviet military services during the war, today, they stand proud and erect when the US national anthem plays, and they speak the words of the Pledge of Allegiance with greater enthusiasm and reverence than most native born Americans. With incredible pride, they recollect their military service as allies of the Americans, standing side by side in common cause.

These now-American, Russian-speaking veterans of World War II are predominantly Jewish and from the Ukraine. Many survived themselves and lost loved ones in the Holocaust; they endured Nazi occupation and destruction of their homeland; they were then oppressed and persecuted under Stalin and the communists. They moved to the United States as refugees - the "Refuseniks" - and helped build West Hollywood as a city.

West Hollywood is proud to honor the service and contributions of these "new" Americans who chose our country as their home.

Krystyna Szypowska has submitted the following comments through the city web site.

Please register my protest to the memorial that you are having built in West Hollywood.  I can only assume that no one did any research into this subject before going ahead with the approval.  You did not research the 50 MILLION + people (Lithuanian, Latvian, Polish, Ukrainian, Czechoslovakian, etc.) who were murdered by these very Russian soldiers or were roused from their beds in the middle of the night in minus 40 temperatures and stuffed into cattle cars and transported into the depths of Siberia as disposable slave labour (men, women, children, elderly alike). Dying along the way - their bodies tossed out of the cattle cars and left in the snow along the train tracks - by these very soldiers that you honor with your monument. Your monument will (perhaps unwittingly) be a monument to these horrors and inhumane treatments.  By your actions you are applauding the monsters who perpetrated these crimes and who have never been made to face any International Court for these crimes.  I am the child of a survivor of such inhumane acts and I can assure you that my mother is horrified to learn of your monument to her torturers; the executioners of her family.  As long as people such as yourselves exist, people who act without thinking and proper ressearch, there will be more murders and more bloodshed and further monuments built to the perpetrators.  Unless these monstrous crimes are unveiled alongside this monument, then by your actions you will be an accessory to these crimes.

Elizabeth Olsson has submitted the following comments through the city web site.

A memorial to Russian soldiers would be an insult to all the millions of people who have suffered under the Russians during WWII and the communist years after.
My father was in a Russian PoW camp in Siberia. My (then 14 year old) mother was one of the 1,7 million people deported into Russia in 1940 from eastern Poland to labour camps in Siberia. To chop trees in -40oC temperatures! Starvation, sickness and death for half of these deportees.

Memorials to Russian soldiers belong in Russia, nowhere else!! Please think again!!!

Subject: [Kresy-Siberia] List of 1,648 soldiers of Anders Army who died during
WWII (CAW)

The list can be found at: http://caw.wp.mil.pl/ When the site
opens, (1) click on Depozyty in the menu on the left; (2) then, go
to the bottom of the page and click on the letter (of the surname);

Cordially,

Hala T.

Lonia

For your interest Below is my response to Coucilmen Prang.

Hello Coucilmen Prang,

I was recently made aware of some clarification you offered regarding
the monument to be built honoring West Hollywood's Russian-speaking
Veterans.

I understand and appreciate the clarifications that you offered. I'm
sure it was no ones intention to honor the Red Army or the former Soviet
Union. I think the difficulty arises from the very real fact that these
Russian Veterans served under the flag and at the behest of a regime
which murdered and persecuted untold millions of people from many
nationalities, including more than a few of their fellow Jews. Clearly
these men (veterans) were in many ways themselves betrayed.

Particulary for those of us who have some personal family connection to
this tragic history, but who since birth have breathed the freedom of
America and know in detail the truth of this horrible period, it's very
objectionable to see this truth ignored, denied, or minimized. I'm sure
these veterans for the most part served with good intentions, honorably,
and in many instances heroically to defeat a great evil common enemy.
But they did so as part of a military and political force that did not
offer liberation but rather subjugation, and opression not freedom. I
sincerely hope that your monument and associated programming will be
very truthful and clear about this distinction, otherwise it will be a
shame and a sham.

As a Jew myself I hope you will keep the Red Army and the Soviet Union
completely out of any honoring of these men. Let's honor America, and
thank her and god that these men have been able to come here. And it is
only here in America that they have been finally liberated, where their
children and grand children will be truly free to participate in and
enrich an imperfect but blessed nation that's led the struggle for
democracy and human rights.

Please make it very clear what's being honored in West Hollywood.

Hello everyone,

Sorry to have missed the last 2 weeks of what looks like very interesting
discussions.

I was away participating in the 5'th Polonia Golf and Tennis Open. If anyone is
interested it was
held in West Palm Beach in Florida USA and it included about 160 Polish golfers
from all over the
world. Lots of fun and discussion about every subject including some about
Kresy and Siberia.

It's an annual event. So if you or someone you know would like to participate
next year, please
visit the web site:

http://www.poloniaopen.com/

It was sponsored by Zywiec, a great Polish beer.

All the best.

Hi Jacek,

Thank you for a very interesting piece of history. My mother has a
very interesting studio photograph of her father and a fellow
cavalryman in full uniform complete with very long swords. Perhaps
it was the winning pose after the triumphs of battle.

Barbara, this is outside of what I've learnt to date. However a
quick search of google has thrown up this very interesting piece on
the
history of the area, which tends to suggest that maybe the two names
are referring to the same locality.

Dear All,
I am pleased to annouce that thanks to Mrs. Malwina Z. Schwieters (Auckland) generosity I was able to computerise a unique book which her father aquired during his service in Anders' Army and brought to New Zealand in his soldier's gear.
It is a very unique edition of Polish soldiers' songs composed and sang by the Anders' Polish Army published in 1944 in Jerusalem.
You will find in it Polish old patriotic songs and WWII songs composed in different places known to you from your own experience, like Buzuluk, Dzalal-Abad, Szachriziabs, Kirkuk, Kanakin, Quzil-Ribat, and also camps in Palestine, Egypt and England.
All songs are in Polish with music scores.
You may read the book (102 pages) "W marszu; Zbior piesni zolnierskich, Spiewnik dla zolnierza polskiego Armii Polskiej na Wschodzie"; (z nutami), Jerozolima, 1944) at:

Group,
I have good news today.  I printed a letter to the Journal regarding the story on Monday and they printed my letter today.  So we got a little more exposure with a big bold title " Untold Holocaust Finally Gets Attention"....that nobody can miss.  Yippee!!Yippeee!!  Also was printed Krystyna Szypowsk'a letter of thanks.  Unbeknownst to me early this morning while I was in bed dreaming( of a copyright issue if you can imagine) my phone rings and wakes me up.  A gentleman who is involved with Canada-Polish relations asked for my permission to reprint my letter for Polski Glos, in Toronto.  I thought he was referring to Monday's story. When I got to work I saw the article in today's paper and realized he meant my letter.  So I called him and told him to run with it as far as he could.  So we got three published articles out of this endeavor. I am just thrilled.

Just some thoughts on this West Hollywood Monument.

How long ago did these ex-Russian soldiers move to West Hollywood?
If it was long ago, like after WWII, it was impossible to leave Soviet
Controlled lands freely
especially with money. So how did they leave? And it sounds like there are a
lot of them.

If they started to live in West Hollywood recently, after the fall of Communism,
then how is it
possible for 'refugees' to move to a very expensive part of USA like this? If
they moved to West
Hollywood recently then they could not possibly have an impact in building the
city as claimed
below. Most refugees are poor as I understand it. If they had money, lots of
money such as to "help
to build West Hollywood:" then where did they get all this money ?!!! And how
could they leave
Russia with all this money? Only Communists had/have control, power and lots of
money in that part
of the world.

Mere regular Russian Soldiers would not have money to emigrate out of Russia,
nor enough money to
live in wealthy West Hollywood, nor enough money to help to build West
Hollywood. So they must have
been high ranking Russian Soldiers with the power and money to move around
freely. Hardly refugee
types I would think?

Zbig

Dear Mr. Plowy

I feel obliged to offer a clarification about the monument to be
built honoring West Hollywood's Russian-speaking veterans.
First of all, it is not a "war memorial." Secondly, it is not a
memorial honoring the Red Army or the former Soviet Union. Finally,
it is not attempt to gloss over the war time atrocities of the
dictator Josef Stalin.

This will be a monument honoring American citizens - citizens who
live in and around West Hollywood. It will honor their efforts as
American allies in the defeat of fascism and their contributions our
local community.

While these Americans may have fought in the Soviet military
services during the war, today, they stand proud and erect when the
US national anthem plays, and they speak the words of the Pledge of
Allegiance with greater enthusiasm and reverence than most native
born Americans. With incredible pride, they recollect their military
service as allies of the Americans, standing side by side in common
cause.

These now-American, Russian-speaking veterans of World War II are
predominantly Jewish and from the Ukraine. Many survived themselves
and lost loved ones in the Holocaust; they endured Nazi occupation
and destruction of their homeland; they were then oppressed and
persecuted under Stalin and the communists. They moved to the United
States as refugees - the "Refuseniks" - and helped build West
Hollywood as a city.

West Hollywood is proud to honor the service and contributions of
these "new" Americans who chose our country as their home.

Sincerely,

JEFFREY PRANG

Councilmember, City West Hollywood

I was reading this wonderful  book on my flights to and from Arizona this week.  A pilot (returning from his holiday) sitting next to me got interested (probably in the pictures) and asked me what I was reading. Of course this gave me the opportunity (for the next half hour ) to tell our story ...........my husband whispered to me "well you have educated one more person." The pilot was totally taken aback as he never heard of the "Forgotten Odyssey." Hopefully he will tell others about it.

Dear  Group,

"Wspomnienia  polonijnych Sybirakow" IS published by Siberian  Society in USA – Chicago. Chicago and Krakow at  Druk:Wydawnictwo Radamsa, Krakow, ul.Szymanowskiego 10. ISBN 83-86552-25-5.

Available for US$15, including postage, from:

Zwiazek Sybirakow w USA
President Mr Henryk Scigala
29 West 530,Forrest View Drive
Warren Ville, Il. 60555 USA
 tel +1 630 393 7262

As most of our older members memories fade the society decided to collect the accounts to be recorded; it is similar to The Stalin's Ethnic Cleansing book published earlier.Accounts of many contributors, in Polish and it is thought it might be   translated. I am certain that the many queries raised by the  younger  members of the group will be answered. From a number  of messages I  see posted I find confused accounts , dates  and locations in Russia  are mixed up; probably our  memories are faded or sometimes we are  influenced by what we read in the papers. This book is worth reading.

I am pleased to extend gratitude to the organisers, authors and publishers for their efforts. They hope people will respond and purchase it so as to be able to translate it into English. The supplies were moved from Poland for general distribution.
Antoni

If it was long ago, like after WWII, it was impossible to leave Soviet
Controlled lands freely
especially with money. So how did they leave? And it sounds like there are
a lot of them.

If they started to live in West Hollywood recently, after the fall of
Communism, then how is it
possible for 'refugees' to move to a very expensive part of USA like this?
If they moved to West
Hollywood recently then they could not possibly have an impact in building
the city as claimed
below. Most refugees are poor as I understand it. If they had money, lots
of money such as to "help
to build West Hollywood:" then where did they get all this money ?!!! And
how could they leave
Russia with all this money? Only Communists had/have control, power and
lots of money in that part
of the world.

Mere regular Russian Soldiers would not have money to emigrate out of
Russia, nor enough money to
live in wealthy West Hollywood, nor enough money to help to build West
Hollywood. So they must have
been high ranking Russian Soldiers with the power and money to move around
freely. Hardly refugee
types I would think?

Regards

Zbig

Dear Mr.
