Is no one protesting at the moment regarding this Soviet memorial in California?? Are there no Polish people in California?

The devestation the Russian army caused which led to 50 plus years of regression is "memorial enough in itself"...who needs a statue?  Unless of course there is a Soviet-style statue erected to commemorate their occupations and war crimes.

Perhaps we should be writing to the "termnator" directly, since an Austrian from birth, and influential in California, he might understand what an insult this is to all the immigrants who dreamed of freedom and had to flee that part of Europe to finally get it.  And this should include any Russian who immigrated to America from the Iron Curtain as well. I feel for the Russian soldier who put his life on the line for his country...and lost it.....he had no choice either..but a statue commemorating him for what he fought for belongs in Russia...not here.  Any statue representing the Soviet Union is not representative of the Freedom that North Americans fight for,  in any way..  I cannot understand the blindness of American people....although... there are more ignorant of this time in history, than aware of it....and it simply is not an issue one way or the other to them.

Dear Anne,
I for one have written a letter of protest to the local rag, The Los Angeles Times, that we in the Polish community refer to as the LA Pravda.   Don't know if they will publish it but what the heck.  There is an old rule of thumb that for every person who takes the time to put pen to paper there are ten thousand who have thought about it but never got further than the thought.
Anyhow there was a outraged Lithuanian lady whose letter was published in the rag last week.   She had had family deported to Siberia and railed against the Soviets.  Over the weekend I received a phone call from a Latvian fellow and encouraged him to write.  His mother had survived deportation to the gulag.  I also turned him onto the K-S site.
For those of you in various parts of the world who like to share your input and collective indignation the e-mail address of the LA Times is letters@...
Please include your name, mailing address, and daytime telephone number, and with e-mail don't send attachments because of they fear viruses (they'll just delete it).
I think a little world wide protest might just wake the buggers up.
Take care.

Hi,

I'll share Just a few friendly suggestions about this matter for
whatever they're worth. First make sure not to present your objections
in personal terms pitting yourself against these veterans. This will be
a no win situation and it will just paint you in a negative light.
Second, as much as possible try to remain positive - that you just
demand that this memorial present a factual and truthful portrayal of
the historical context within which the service of these veterans took
place and not a distorion, in the interest of educating the public about
this important history. Also that this memorial if not placed in proper
historical context it is highly objectionable not only to Poles but also
to countless others who suffered greatly at the hands of Soviet
government. I would try to broaden it out and make it not simply a
Polish thing. Though of course I understand the particularly Polish
aspect of this. Hopefully you can find some allies. . . . just some
suggestions.

Tilford

I think harnessing the support for the protests of the other deportees - people from the Baltic Republics, Ukraine, Chechnya, Byelorussia, even persecuted Russians, is a very good idea. Have read that Polish Euro MPs in Brussels are doing this already, in order to bring back the issue of Yalta on the public agennda.

An answer from a British journalist met at a party, to my question why Polish letters, for instance protesting against 'Polish concentration camps' are almost never printed. He said: if we get six such letters and two hundred on the best recepies on how to cook squirrels (yes, this is England!), we will print the squirell in raising sauce or grilled with mushrooms, and not one on an obviously more important subject, because squirrells obviously elicit more passion amongst our leaders. If there were, let's say, sixty Polish letters, we might start thinking.

I trust his explanation, except that, as Rich rightly points out, this is the main problem with the Polish community - to actually grab a pen and write.. So, let's try to change our lethargic compatriots - it can be done, I am sure...

Jagna - I no longer reside in England, but visit my mother in Bradford, often.  If I was still residing there I would suggest putting a petition  together, i.e. letter signed by all after mass on Sunday, or maybe at the Polish club,.  This should get some kind of response?  Krystyna

My mother is Janina Migowska.  She lives behind Moore Avenue. on Beldon Park Avenue.  She's a little frail as she had a heart attack last year and doesn't get around as well as she used to.  I know she usually picks up the polish paper at church on Sundays.  Do you know Krysia Rybakowska?

Dear Hela,

Please look up the 24th February issue of Dziennik Polski.
On page nine you will find, what I assume to be, your report of the 13th
February Event you organised, in its full glory.
As I promised you, on the 16th February, I also sent my report of the Event
to the Editor Of Dziennik Polski.

Kind regards,

Eugene Krajewski

Thank you, I certainly will Jagna.  Where do you live in England?  If you ever come to America, especially Florida, maybe you can stop on by and visit for a while.  Krystyna

These seem very sensible suggestions, Tilford - not to keep these protests confined to Polish suffering only. And your article is great!

Well, I'm sure there is larger community of people out there who would find this memorial objectionable if it indeed is what it appears to be. It the objections are all "parochial Polish" ones I think it is easier for the monuments supporters to deal with.

Personally I don't have any problem with these veterans themselves. I'm willing to assume that they volunteered or were conscripted into the Soviet Army during the war with much the same spirit that my father had when he went into the American Army during the war.

When you put up a public memorial with tax dollars you need to try hard to be acceptable and  fair to the broadest possible section of the public, and not cater to one small slice. That's my opinion. And in putting up a memorial like this they need to put it in a truthful historcial context. This appears to be what is lacking.

Tilford
