To those wanting a well written odyssey book in English--

Read "Without Vodka: Adventures in Wartime Russia" by Aleksander
Topolski.
He was 16 in 1939 when he was taken captive by Soviet soldiers on the
southeast border of Poland. After time in Czortkow prisons, he was
taken to Russia, first to prisons and then to work in Gulag labor
camps until he was released under the "amnesty". He worked for a
while near Kirov in Northern Russia, then boarded a TransSiberian
train and travelled hither and yon until he found Anders's army in
Kermine (Navoi) in Uzbekhistan.
Topolski tells what happened to him and to so many Poles coping with
hunger, sickness and fear in the Soviet Union during the Second World
War. Other Sybiraki have praised "Without Vodka" as being true to
life, saying their experiences were similar.
The book was published first in Canada in 2000 by McArthur & Company
(ISBN: 1-55278-121-6) and then in the USA in 2001 by Steerforth Press
(ISBN: 1–58642-012-7). It has been well reviewed in English language
daily papers and periodicals (as well as Polish) and is available in
North American bookstores and worldwide online (eg from Amazon.com,
or Chapters) as well as in many libraries.
You can see the reviews, excerpts, photos, drawings, index of names
and places, etc. on his website www.withoutvodka.com. This has
links to other sites carrying reviews and further excerpts
from "Without Vodka."
If you have trouble reaching his site, go to the search engine Google
and look under Aleksander Topolski, or under Without Vodka.
Good reading!

Please offer a belated welcome to Maria (Rutkowska) Nolan, from Australia,
who subscribed last month but it looks to me like I forgot to forward her
introduction then.

Although not as directly related to the Soviet deportations as most of us,
Maria's family also suffered during the war and there is much we can learn
from each other.

...I received your page address from Chris Gladun - he thought I might be
interested in what you are doing with Polish History,

My name is Maria Nolan and I live in Goulburn, I used to live in Plumpton
also in NSW, moved to Goulburn 1 year ago for my husbands job. I retired
from my job as school assistant last year, but for this school term I have
been asked to work 2 days a week at my old school at Blackett which is a
suburb of Mt Druitt, NSW. I am writing a family history and am interested in
Polish History as well, I will send you what I sent to Chris.

I have also published a small article on Polish Connection page if you are
interested in reading it I am sending the page as well.
warm regards

Hello Chris,
I have just found your story and all related pages, It is so very
interesting and moving and a wonderful history lesson. Thank you so much for
all the hard work you have done to have this memorable story of your family
on the internet.

I am also Polish, born in Germany 1946 in a displaced persons camp, we
migrated as displaced refugees to Australia in 1950. My mum was a forced
labourer on a German farm and my dad was a prisoner in various concentration
camps in Poland, Germany and France.

Up until 4 years ago , I knew nothing about my parents past, as both wanted
to forget what happened, so they buried their past and never talked about it
only telling us when we were children that their families perished during
the war. 4 years ago my mother with the onset of dementia and no short term
memory, but her past memory was very vivid in her mind started to talk about
her past life and experiences. All the tragic horrific things that she went
through were very hard for us to comprehend. Not only did she live in
torture during the war, she then relived it all again during her illness.
This then started me on a road to Poland and a search for relatives and a
family history.

Reading your family story has given me so much insight as to what the
survivors of all these atrocities went through, It also helps me to
understand why when we were growing up I always felt that both my parents
had this enormous emotional brick wall in front of them. Since my search
started I have found relatives, I have a half brother and sister back in
Poland, and after finding my mothers son in 1999 , we invited him to visit
mum, and meet her for the first time in 60 years. all very emotional, and he
spent 4 beautiful days with her before she died. I now have this passion for
wanting to learn more and more, not only about our family history but Polish
history as well. Thanks once again for your contribution.
warm regards
Maria Nolan (Rutkowska) from Australia

Hello all group members and hello Stefan

Stefan, a small favour. Would you please translate the
following into English. I think you are probably
better at that than I am.

"Dzis we snie mnie nawiedzil aniol polskiej doli i
plakal szumiac w mroku skrzydlami srebrnymi, jak gdyby
chcial powiedzic: 'Umierasz powoli, samotny, tak
daleko od rodzinnej ziemi'. "Daleko? Co ty mowisz?
Mnie wszystkie zapachy ogrodow i pol naszych co dzien
niosa wiatry. We mnie jest wszystko: Mazowieckie
piachy, i jeziora litewskie i wisla i tatry".

Jan Lechom/zm. 1956r. w nowym jorku/ Rozmowa z
Aniolem.
Polonia Swiata.org

Please do not dissect this, and look at the positives
and negatives etc. etc etc.!
The essence of our polishness is here. Our romanticism
is here. The very heart of our parents is to be found
here.
This is partly why a group such as this exists. To
HONOUR and REMEMBER those who loved and lost their
beloved homeland in such tragic circumstances.

With good wishes to all

II: the saga of 380,000 Polish children deported to the Soviet Union
during the years 1939-41 ... of great value to historians of World
War II, but also of more general interest as a document of love,
courage, and of extraordinary human tragedy."

My mother said that she of course remembers your family very well from
the Osada and later. They seem to be keeping in touch now too. I scanned
the photo from Stalins Ethnic ..... I assume that they have exchanged
photos over the years so I don't really know who this photo belongs to
but it was with my Mother's article so ..... I'll ask her if she has any
more photos. I wrote to Bogus too but haven't heard anything back.

Maybe you can go along to the "Krechowiecka reunions" that are held
annually at Fenton, England (where's Fenton?) and meet these people
yourself!

Ela,
Thanks for the poet in your Polish soul.

I must say that my cousin in Kraków, Teresa Baluk Ulewicz, is the poetry
translator 'par excelance' in the famliy - She even translated Jan
Kochanowski!

Anyway, here is my sad little attempt (there is no sense translating a poem
word for word). But it would be great to read other renditions (now how can
I coax something out of Teresa...?)

"In my dreams, the angel of Polish sorrow visited me,
and rustling silver wings in the dusk, wept bitterly,
as if to say: 'You are dying so slowly, so lonely,
so far from the land that gave birth to your family"

"Far? What is it that you mean to say?
All the smells of our gardens and fields, every day,
are brought me by the winds, [that lovingly blow],
Within me is everything, [that I love so]:
The sands of Mazovia, the Lithuanian lakes,
the Vistula River, the great Tatra peaks."

Book Description
A story of "the other holocaust." In 1939, the Russian invasion of Poland marked the beginning of the massive deportation of Polish civilians to the dreaded labor camps of Siberia-Stalin's "re-education" of the masses. By 1942, one third of them had died, mostly the very old and very young. Goodybye Tomorrow is a story of extreme hardship, perseverance, hope, and faith, told by a remarkable woman who experienced the horror. Her family was unceremoniously deported and spent two years in a labor camp near Archangel in Northern Siberia. It's the story of one family's struggle to survive the harsh and subhuman conditions of deportation and labor camp; their travels as refugees over four continents; the strength they discover and cling to when all around is despair; and their triumphs in overcoming their oppressors and their many trials and tribulations. Niezapomniane Jutro is the Polish language version of this book.

From the Publisher
The crimes against Polish civilians by the Soviet Union during and after WWII have received little attention. The focus of Western media was on the Holocaust. "The other holocaust" was ignored because its victims had either perished or could not tell their story from behind the Iron Curtain. Those who were lucky enough to survive the Siberian Labor Camps and get out of the Soviet Union were dispersed into many lands. They had no pictures or film to show of their ordeal - only their terrible, painful memories of the brutalities they witnessed and suffered. This is the gripping story of one family's deportation and fight for survival. An important story - a witness to history -- as this book speaks for thousands of others who shared a similar fate.

About the Author
Gryzelda Niziol Lachocki was born in Poland, educated on four continents, and came to the USA as a young bride. The beginning was rather difficult, but drawing on her experiences in a labor camp in Siberia, and refugee camps in Iran and Lebanon, she was well equipped to overcome life's hurdles. With the support from her husband Eugene, an electronic engineer, she managed to become a bookkeeper and a registered nurse; she obtained her MA in Secondary Education and became a biology teacher. She taught in High School and in Jr. College from which she retired. She lives in Florida with her husband. The author spends her retirement doing charity work, writing, corresponding with her many friends all over the world, traveling, and reading.

"We left Poland in February. It was already the end of April. We reached the end of the railroad tracks. The train stopped in an open field. The soldiers went from car to car and ordered everybody out. People fell into deep snow. Many had difficulty getting up. The elderly tried to keep up, but cold, deep snow, and hunger sapped their energy. They fell frequently. Immediately, the victorious soldiers beat them with their guns. Many of them didn't get up at all. Mothers carried small children. Older children helped each other. Mother carried Thad on her back. Our neighbor Ed Adamski, only sixteen, carried Josephine on his back. The rest of us walked. We marched the whole night in the direction of lights from a distant city flickering on the snow."

Hello Elizabeth:

Fenton is in Lincolnshire. My Uncle, has asked me to accompany him to
the next "Krechowiecka Reunion" which, I understand, are normally
held in September each year.

I hope to meet your mother, amongst others, then.

Best wishes

Hello all,

I stumbled across this Polish Business Directory from 1929 quite by accident and thought some of you may find it helpful also.

It is an amazing resource and contains not only individual's names but also some information about towns, and cities, like which "gmina" and "powiat" a town belonged to, etc.  (Unfortunately, information cannot be printed yet, until completion of phase two - data entry of individual names from each town).

Dear Colleauges,
I came across this web page:
which has an index of people, (priests/nuns etc), from the Kresy areas, who were arrested/imprisoned/sent to labour camps, or faced death penalties.
The site is in Polish only, some of the obituaries are rather gruesome, and depict clearly the atrocities of the NKWD...indeed the name I am researching (a priest), was arrested, had an effigy of the cross burnt on his back, tied to a cart, and made to walk 100s of miles, therafter, attempts to extract his bishops ring, resulted in having his finger hacked off..........finally to be buried alive.
Kind Regards
Bogdan (Derby,East Midlands.UK)

Stefan,

Thank you for forwarding the photograph of the Polish cemetary in Teheran
and, through you, my thanks also to Wladyslaw. That is very kind and
thoughtful of him. This is the only general photograph I have of the
cemetary where my sister and grandmother are buried. Thaks again.

I'm just curious as to whether, providing Germany had not been conquered by
the Allies and USSR, and when it could have attained nuclear capabilities?

Germany already had v2, and v3 rockets, as well as air-surface missiles.
Would it have conceived a bomb, or would Germany have had a nuclear warhead
on a missile?
