Tonight someone pointed me to the Captionfish website
http://www.captionfish.com/
To my surprise I notice the the subtitled foreign movies at Downtown West
are on that website.
One is *The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo* (a popular book and movie from
Sweden).
The book is too hard for me to read, so I'm going to try to go to the movie.

Reminder: Regal continues to show which films are OC on their website:
http://www.regmovies.com/nowshowing/opencaptionedshowtimes.aspx#TN

Have plans for the 4th of July? http://faithpromise.org/july
5 to 10 PM at Pellissippi Community College,
Faith Promise Church will have a fun and free party for the whole community:
  inflatable
games for the kids, free food, an interpreted concert, a program, and
fireworks. Hope to
see you there!

Betty

The newest movie testing the CC glasses at Knoxville Center is TRON:Legacy,
beginning today through Thursday 12/23/10.

The showtimes for this feature will be:

12:40 4:20 7:20 10:10

It is very very important to fill out the survey. That is why this theater
is permitting the deaf in free during this test. Only six glasses in the
theater (and I understand two aren't working).

As for the survey, the details Regal is seeking are very important to both
Regal and the manufacturer and while it seems long, it is what they want. I
am sending you the copy Randy Smith sent me.

Randy Smith of Regal said when you receive the glasses all you should have
to do nothing more than put them on in a comfortable position. The power is
supposed to be turned on and the other buttons, languages and font size
should not need adjusted, but we’ll see what we can do.

Please share this email with your local deaf friends.

You also can download a form here:

http://www.box.net/shared/4ypurf4hkt

If you forget the form, download it after the movie and mail it to KCD
(attn: Regal Theaters), 3731 Martin Mill Pike, Knoxville, TN 37920

Thanks for your help.

Ever wished you could watch 3-D and have captions too at the same time?
Here's your chance to test the equipment! Please forward this email to
other deaf people in Knoxville who are not on this mailing list.

Sony has now requested that Regal run a test of their 3 D captioning glasses
and get feedback. The arrangement will be the same: free movies, show up
at Knoxville Center and tell them that you are there for the 3 D glasses
test and they will give you entry to the film for free.

The first closed captioning 3 D film is Tron and the ShowTimes are:

   1:30 4:25 7:25 10:20 until February 3.

You will need to fill out a one-page survey after you see this film. The
survey is attached.

There are *only 3* pairs of 3-D CC glasses, so no more that 3 people who
need captions can watch at the same time. First come first served.

Randy Smith, Chief Administrative Officer and Counsel says: "Regal hopes
to get some additional films for the test and expect it to run about the
same time period of the last test, five or six weeks. Once again we really
need people to attend and we need the surveys completed.

And once again I really appreciate all of your help in this regard as this
all will help us increase overall access to all feature films, if we are
successful in our efforts."

long. But we will have Gnomeo and Juliet 3D available in closed caption
beginning this Friday 2/11/11. The show times for Saturday and Sunday will be

> I have made a lot of representations over the years and clearly no one had
grounds to believe my (Regal’s) intentions so it feels good to finally be able
to commit. We still have work to do with 3D and IMAX, as well as getting the
non-MPAA studios to provide content, but we are moving forward and as we
digitize our locations, we should be able to begin providing captioned product
at all show times where the data is made available by the studios. The only
other limit we have right now is the manufacturers of the captioning equipment
are limited in their production abilities.

deaf, hard of hearing and blind over the next 12 to 18 months nationwide at

Two people told me the attachment of Regal's Press Release was not included
-- probably cut out by yahoogroups.
Here is the press release below. Sorry for the inconvenience. - Betty

Knoxville, Tennessee – May 4, 2011 – Regal Entertainment Group (NYSE: RGC),
a leading motion
picture exhibitor owning and operating the largest theatre circuit in the
United States, today announced
plans to equip all digital cinema locations with personal captioning and
descriptive video technologies.

For years Regal has actively worked with various technology companies and
film distributors to create
opportunities to increase theatre access for deaf, hard of hearing and blind
moviegoers. The advent of
digital cinema technology offers new opportunities to increase access at all
digitally equipped theatres
and Regal expects to have practically all of its theatres converted to
digital cinema by the end of 2012.
In conjunction with its digital cinema rollout, Regal has developed a
strategy to also rollout these
adaptive technologies for widespread consumer use over the next 12 to 18
months. In addition, Regal
has partnered with Captionfish which is the internet's leading captioned
movies search engine that finds
open captioned, Rear Window® captioned, foreign/subtitled and
descriptively-narrated movies showing
at theatres across the United States.

“Regal once again has bolstered their commitment to providing movies that
are accessible to people with
hearing and vision loss. Regal was the first to provide a comprehensive
website, advertised show times,
theatre manager training program and free screenings to deaf and hard of
hearing children. Regal has
always been a strong advocate for the deaf and hard of hearing and remains
the most committed exhibitor
in the U.S. to support captioned programming and providing the deaf and hard
of hearing community
access to feature films. This announcement demonstrates their continuing
leadership in accessible
entertainment,” said Nanci Linke Ellis, of Captionfish.com. Partner Brendan
Gramer added, “We are
thrilled that they have chosen to partner with Captionfish as a resource for
disseminating accessible
showtimes.”

“After years of working to ensure that personal captioning solutions would
be available through digital
cinema, as well as meet the needs and expectations of the deaf, hard of
hearing and blind, we are pleased
to begin efforts now to offer this access at theatres converted to the
all-digital format,” stated Randy
Smith, Regal Entertainment Group, Chief Administrative Officer & Counsel.
“Regal is now ordering
and, depending on product availability, will be installing these new
technologies at our fully digitized
locations. Our intentions are to offer captioning and descriptive video for
every film that comes with
such content, at all show times, at every theatre equipped and to be
equipped with digital cinema systems
over the next 12 to 18 months. By the end of 2012, almost every Regal
location nationwide will be fully
equipped with digital cinema systems and be further equipped to provide
closed captions and descriptive
video for our deaf, hard of hearing and blind guests.”

Regal Entertainment Group is grateful for the many years of aid, insight and
support provided by
numerous individuals and advocates within the deaf, hard of hearing and
blind communities. While
obstacles remain for some large format presentations, 3D films and the
limited availability of captioned
film product from some studios, Regal is eagerly entering a new era of
unparalleled access for the deaf,
hard of hearing and blind.

Good afternoon Everyone,****

** **

The BBC ran a story on the Sony Glasses I referenced below so I thought I
would share the link with everyone. Let me know what you think if you have
not seen them before.

Dear Friends and Associates:****

** **

I write you today to obtain your feedback on our ultimate rollout of digital
closed captioning systems and descriptive video to all of our currently and
soon to be fully digitized theatre locations. As many of you are probably
aware, Regal announced our incorporation of a total access solution for our
digitized theatres and hope to have all of them outfitted by no later than
the end of 2012 or sooner if possible. While Regal is ready and has
committed to purchase and install the necessary equipment, our vendors are
not. Specifically, we have committed to a system primarily based on closed
captioning glasses developed by Sony Corporation. We also would like to
provide the option of seat mount closed captioning systems but they are
still in the development/production stage, either the existing systems as
modified to work with Sony distribution systems or Sony developed systems.
While we would like to provide the option of either type device, we selected
the Sony glasses based on consumer feedback which focused on the ease of
use, lack of eye and neck strain and the ability to have captions in a
direct line of sight to the screen. In addition to captioning, these
systems are being designed to enable provision of descriptive video for the
blind and visually impaired.****

** **

Initially we were under the impression that once an order was made, the
equipment would be produced. Sony, unfortunately, suffered a few setbacks
and was impacted by the natural disasters that struck Japan earlier this
year. Regardless, we have pressed Sony to identify some form of delivery
schedule for their products and they have advised us that they believe they
can deliver an additional 20-30 prototypes by December 2011, another 20
pre-production units by January 2012 and hope to be in full production
sufficient to deliver an additional 500 final production units each month by
the end of February 2012. ****

** **

With this delivery schedule, we have developed what we believe to be the
best way to distribute these new systems based on our effort to meet the
needs of the majority of deaf and hard of hearing and blind until we have
sufficient capacity to outfit all of our digitized locations. In a
nutshell, our proposed roll out schedule is as follows:****

** **

**1. **Phase one – Those existing digital locations that have the
highest attendance at open captioned films as well as those that service the
greatest number of blind and visually impaired guests. ****

**2. **Phase two – Varying digital locations in the top 50 DMA’s where
the available population data reflects the highest density of those who
could utilize these services; and, ****

**3. **Phase three – The remainder of our digital facilities.****

** **

Please also know that we are being pressed to outfit certain markets and
certain states by certain advocacy groups and state governments. While I
appreciate their desire to service their constituents/members, we are
seeking a method that services the greatest number of deaf, hard of hearing,
blind and visually impaired across the country, not based on local or
specialized interests to the detriment of others. Obviously it would be
preferable to have all the equipment and roll it all out at one time, but we
are at the mercy of the manufacturer and they have advised that this is the
best they can do to meet our needs. ****

** **

You have been of great assistance in the past and I value your opinions so
please let me know what you think of this rollout plan and what, if
anything, you think we should consider as an alternative. ****

** **

Sincerely,****

** **

Update from Regal

> From: "Randy Smith" <Randy.Smith@...>
> Date: January 31, 2012 4:20:03 PM EST
> Good Afternoon Everyone:
> I wanted to follow up on my past correspondence and, once again, make certain
that Regal obtains feedback, to the extent possible, on our personal captioning
system roll out. Last I contacted you I advised as to our three phase roll out
strategy. Hearing no objections or counter suggestions, we have moved forward
with the logistics associated with same. Before addressing one of the areas of
concern, the number of units available at any give theatre, I want to give you a
quick update on our progress.
>
> Sony did not meet their schedule and was unable to provide any additional
prototypes in 2011 as previously advised. However, we have had some productive
meetings with their representatives and we have confirmed our previous order by
assigning purchase orders for the captioned glasses and peripheral equipment.
As of today, Sony advises that they should be able to produce 500 units to our
attention by mid March 2012 and an additional 500 a month thereafter until all
our needs are met. Assuming this rollout schedule is met, we will complete our
digital personal captioning rollout by the first quarter 2013. While this is
longer than we desired or anticipated, the majority of our digital locations
will be converted by the end of 2012. Once again, we selected the Sony devices
(which per unit cost approximately three times more than the other available
seat mount devices) because of their ease in use as well as the ability to place
the captions in the direct line of sight of the user, much like in home
captioning. For those of you that may be unfamiliar with the Sony product, this
link leads to a BBC story regarding same:
>
>
>
> http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-14654339
>
> One of the issues that has come up pertains to the number of units to be
issued to each location. Some of our competitors are providing, or planning to
provide, between 6 to 8 seat mount devices at each location. One competitor has
already done so and advises that they have not experienced a shortage as of yet
for any particular Showtime. While this is good news, since Regal has been
providing scheduled open captioned shows for so long, we are concerned that in a
limited number of our locations our deaf and hearing impaired guests may have
become used to attending shows in groups that exceed 10 people.
>
> Assuming Sony meets their first delivery date, we will begin converting our
highest attendance locations with personal captioning systems by the end of
March 2012. In an effort to educate our guests on the change of captioned film
availability, we intend to begin handing out materials to any guest that
purchases a ticket to an open caption show advising the guests that within 30
days the theatre will cease scheduled open captioned shows and will make
available personal captioning systems that will, to the extent a film comes with
captioning content, make all films available at all Showtime’s. we will
further advise each guest that to the extent that they desire to see a film with
a group that exceeds 10 individuals, they should contact us ten days in advance
and we will make reasonable efforts to accommodate the request with additional
equipment or a scheduled open captioned Showtime.
>
> As you know, it is very difficult to meet every ones expectations. However,
we are trying to put together a positive transition from open captioned to
personalized captioned films and make all such films available at all
Showtime’s. Consequently, once again I welcome any comments or suggestions
you may have about this conversion. In addition, once we confirm that the
rollout is beginning, basically once Sony supplies the first month delivery
which I will confirm to you, we would appreciate you notifying your members of
this change such that we can get the word out to as many deaf and hard of
hearing individuals as possible and avoid confusion during the conversion.

right in front of your eyes
>
> Sony is working with American theater chain Regal Entertainment to introduce a
new kind of glasses technology that can display closed captions for those with
hearing problems. The new Access Glasses can show text in six different
languages, which is then placed directly in the viewer's field of vision so that
they don't have to constantly look at the bottom of the screen. The information
is streamed wirelessly, and the location of the text can be adjusted to make
things more comfortable. The glasses also include features for the blind or
visually impaired, as they can be used alongside headphones to provide extra
audio detail about just what's happening on screen.

> Regal — the largest theater chain in the US — started rolling the Access
Glasses out this month, and expects to have them available in "practically all
of its fully digitized theater locations" by early 2013.
