This was sent to all students:
As a reminder: Students with vehicles on Campus are encouraged to remove those
vehicles from City Streets onto College Parking Lots PRIOR to departing the
Campus for Winter Break. During the break period there will undoubtedly (and
unfortunately) be periods of cold and snow which may result in the declaration
of a Snow Emergency by the City of Galesburg.
During such Snow Emergencies all vehicles parked on city Streets are required to
be moved to parking lots or other off-street locations to permit City snow plows
to clear the streets. Vehicles not moved may be subject to a $25 Snow Emergency
ticket. Additionally (and most importantly), unmoved vehicles in violation will
also be subject to $50.00 towing fees (and subsequent storage fees of a $25.00
per day) by the City during and after the snow emergency period.
Please share this info with others who have vehicles on Campus and are planning
to depart for the break period. Please contact Campus Safety (7979) with any
questions/concerns regarding this matter.
Thanks. jhs
FYI, the shuttles from Knox connect to a stopping point for Peoria Charter
Coach, which is a regional bus carrier. The Knox shuttles take students over to
the Bradley University Student center in Peoria, where the bus picks up
passengers to O'Hare and Midway. I don't know what the current rate for students
is, but I know there is a student discount. You can see the times of the buses
at http://www.peoriacharter.com/. Your student MUST sign up in the student
development office to book a shuttle to connect with the buses.
I have also heard that the Southwest Chief train is sometimes behind schedule.
Amtrak is pretty good about changing trains if you find that you need to do that
- or I think you have a year to use the ticket if you cannot make the original
train that you intended to take.
Thanks, everyone, for your great suggestions!
Jennifer
My daughter is a senior, and we have found that using the shuttle to Moline and
flying out of Quad Cities airport is the easiest route. Getting from Union
Station to O'Hare or Midway is a hassle, and I can usually get her home from
Moline with 2 flights. (We live in New Hampshire.)
Good luck!
Fran
PS: I recommend booking flights early! Price goes up wildly as you get closer to
the time, even when it is not a holiday.

Hello Jenny,
Thank you very much for your response. I think this time my daughter
will have to take the Southwest Chief and cross her fingers. I found
out last night that she has a friend who is taking the same train, who
lives in Napier(?), and whose parents will pick them up, take them
home, and then drive my daughter to O'Hare. That is very kind on
their part, and makes me feel reassured that at least she won't be
alone in Chicago, whatever happens. Lily is a freshman and this is
her first time making the trip by herself.
I've scheduled her to get from Knox to Chicago by train, trying to
avoid the flight from Peoria to Chicago, because it is very expensive
at this point, and because I worry about her more on a small plane,
but the logistics have, surprisingly, turned out to be very
difficult. I think next time I might consider the Peoria to Chicago
flight. If I can buy it very far in advance it is not that much more
expensive than just the flight from Chicago to Los Angeles.
I think it's great that they have such a long winter break. I hope
you and your family have a wonderful holiday!

Perhaps someone that she knows from the Chicago area is coming home on
Sunday and can get her to a local Metra station (to get to Union station she
would need to check the schedule for the times from the location) or a
station on the Blue CTA line that goes straight to O'Hare.

Yes, it's complicated taking the train, but usually cheaper than flying out
of Moline, and my son has gotten used to taking the el train to the
airport. This is his 3rd year, and now he actually prefers taking the very
long train ride to California (maybe because I made him schlep across
Chicago with his suitcases to the airport, LOL). We're in Berkeley, so he
takes the California Zephyr directly from Galesburg.
I love the long winter break, too! I couldn't fly him home for Thanksgiving
if he had to go back. I especially loved it when he was a freshman and away
from home for the first time, and it was only for 10 weeks.
You have a great holiday too! :-)

My son played basketball his freshman year and only got to come home for 9
days over the holidays and no Thanksgiving. That was tough on everyone but
especially him. California boy, adjusting to the cold, on an empty campus
and missing most of the holidays with his family. He decided not to play
basketball this year…for other reasons…but we are looking forward to having
him home for the whole winter break.
He is actually driving home with his roomate whose family lives in Oakland.
He will be staying with us for the Thanksgiving and then flying home to
Oakland on Sunday.
BTW, what does it cost to take the train all the way to California and how
long does it take?

It's about $120 one way, with the student discount, and it takes a little
over 48 hours IF it's on time. So that's 2 nights in the seat, but the
seats on the long distance trains are big, and they recline pretty far, and
so far I've never seen the train more than half full at night, so you get 2
seats. It's really expensive if you get a bed. The atmosphere on the cross
country trains is very friendly and relaxed.
I've heard the athletes hardly get a break! That must be really hard on
them, and their parents.

My son (soph) will be on that same Southwest Chief train that day. He's going
to the Bears game with his dad who will pick him up at Union Station. They've
got a couple of hours to spare so it should be fine either way.
You can check this website for historical information about delays.
http://www.amtrakdelays.com/cgi-bin/train.cgi Based on that site, the Chief has
actually been consistently early for the past 4 weeks! Of course, the upcoming
holiday may impact that.
Good luck!

There are upsides to being and college athlete and definite downsides.
The price of the train sounds reasonable. It is costing us way more than
that for gas and lodging for a couple of nights on the road. Then he has to
get back to school! He is splitting the room costs with his friends but we
are picking up the gas. It is cheaper to fly round trip than to drive. He
really wanted his car while he was home this break so we agreed.
However...we may think twice about that next year.

I was just contacted by the Admission Office and they are looking for some
parents to assist with an Admission event in Oakbrook, Illinois, this Sunday,
Dec. 6. I am not sure of all the details (such as time or place)but if you are
interested, please let me know and I can put you in touch with Zach George, the
Admissions counselor. Go ahead and e-mail me at jgallas@....
Thanks!
Jennifer
I see that it has been a while since anyone has posted, but I am so glad to be a
part of this list. My son, Anthony, will be arriving next week as a sophomore
transfer student from our home in the Finger Lakes region of NY State...13 hours
away. :o) It helps to know that I have some sort of parent/Knox connection
with this group!!
Laurie
Hi Laurie! My son George will be getting on the train here in Oakland,
Caifornia this Thursday to go back for his senior year as a computer science
major.
Will Anthony be driving? I assume he'll be part of the new students'
orientation, even tho he's a sophomore, because obviously he's new...;-)
You can go to that too, there are tons of parents the 1st couple of days.
Anyway, welcome, and I hope he has a great time!

My advice is to be a good listener, but don't get too emotionally involved. It
is a common stage that many freshman go through. My daighter's first month at
her college was sad and lonely. She then connected with a great group of like
minded kids and she has lobed college ever since.
Good luck!

I suggest Skype as a way to talk to her. It can be done by simultaneous typed
messages or by telephone between your computer and her computer. You can also
see her when you talk if you have a web cam. The newer computers have web cams
built in.
What is good about Skype is that you can leave it on and when she wants to type
a message to you, she can do so and feel a connection to home without you having
to be too involved.
Skype is free and can be downloaded from their website.
I am the mother of a current student of Knox and a recent graduate of Knox.

This weekend may be a little hard, but with classes really starting they will be
able to establish a routine and that really helps. They have had a lot of neat
activities, but that can get overwhelming after a week. Getting into a settled
routine will make Knox seem a little more like "home". Remind her that,
although it feels weird, and even painful at times, that nearly everyone goes
through it...even if they aren't showing it. It's part of learning to recognize
and honor what is important in our lives. That and reminders that deep breaths,
a walk, something to laugh at every day (youtube videos?), prayer, and
journaling can all be a great way to get through this time. I tell my graduates
from high school, 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months...all turning points!!

My daughter is a Sophomore this year. Last year we found Skype communication,
both web-video and IM-chat to be a great way to stay in touch. I think the IM
was particularly helpful. Just a line or two to say "Hi, we're thinking of
you." seemed to make a big difference.
We also sent a lot of small packages with goodies from home to her. I think
getting something from home once every week or two really lifts a kid's spirits
when they are away from home for the first time.
Good luck,

Microsoft Live Messenger also works well , is free, and you can send photos
while you are video conferencing and typing messages at the same time.- good for
kids who like to multi task, and you can have a video chat with one child and a
text conversation with another at the same time, something I find useful as I
also have a daughter who is a freshman at Knox, and another who is a sophomore
at Tulane in New Orleans.
My daughter (Knox) has also set up an arrangement with her best friend who has
stayed here at home for college to Skype each other at certain times when they
are both going to be available, and so far it seems to be working and keeping
them both happy. They wanted to keep some continuity and stay in touch to make
the transition easier for them both.

Thanks to everyone for your great suggestions on how to cope with homesickness.
We have been using Skype for chats and it's worked out great. You gave me a lot
of ideas to try - I very much appreciate your sharing your experiences!
A local Galesburg church, Ladies of Mary Immaculate Heart of Mary is once again
baking and delivering cakes, cupcakes, brownies, cookies and fudge made-to-order
to Knox students. Yesterday they mailed 1,375 letters to parents so we should
receive them soon. I ordered brownies last year for my daughter and she was so
surprised and loved them! I completed the form, indicated a delivery date and
mailed a check to them. They need a few weeks' notice and you have options such
as types of icing, types of cookies and types of cakes. They contacted my
daughter via cell phone and made delivery plans with her. What a great way to
celebrate birthdays, holidays and special occasions!
My contact at the church will send me an attachment once she receives it and
I'll post here also. Your letter should be arriving soon!

Since this is our first semester here, and Knox uses the trimester system , so
that they finish finals just before Thanksgiving, we need some advice on how the
college closing works, as we have to book her flight home. And since so close to
Thanksgiving , we need to book early. We know she can book a shuttle to Moline
or Preoria through the school, but any advice anyone could send our way would be
appreciated.
I know we may be getting ahead of ourselves here, but we usually book on
air-miles, and they need to be booked well in advance.
And if anyone knows anyone who kid is heading into Texas, Houston, Dallas, San
Antonio, Austin?, we would love to hear from them.
Hi parents,
My daughter is a freshman and I'm curious how things like local baked goods are
delivered. I ordered the snack boxes (or whatever it was) from the Galesburg
Women's Club and talked to the nice folks handing out cupcakes, Sweet Intentions
by the Morgans, at the President's house on move-in day. They said they deliver
to Knox frequently. My question is how do these things get into the hands of
the students? Back in my day I lived in a dorm with a front desk and that is to
where fresh items were delivered.
Thanks for any information. So far so good with the faraway freshman.
Tia
Check with the school for the days and times that they run the shuttle to
Moline and Peoria, and then make sure she reserves a spot. My son takes
Amtrak into Chicago, then takes local transit to the airport, which gives
him more flexibility. That's a long schlep, tho.

As I indicated in a previous message, I placed an order last year and my
daughter loved it! They contacted her via cell and made delivery arrangements.
