Thanks so much for your responses. They definitely give me hope for him
succeeding…
Orientation/drop off day was wonderful - I was so impressed by the
school and the students. I just hope he steps up to the plate!

helpful. They will do everything possible to ensure your son is
successful. The biggest challenge may be coming to an agreement with
your son on how he wants to handle his ADD. Do you intervene or will he
talk to his teachers and advisor...? Once they are "in the loop" I would
guess all will go well. But I do think it is something that should be
discussed with his advisor, right from the beginning. If you feel he
will be reluctant to approach this subject, I might consider scheduling
a (family) meeting with an advisor. Knox is a very close-knit group.
It's not unusual for a professor to contact you if you miss more than
one class. They are invested in his success.

a student's success is their "comfort level" at school...Finding people
he/she is happy to hang out with. It's best to keep busy, try
everything! In the first month of school, Knox has a club day where
students can sign up for various on campus clubs. I recommend
encouraging your son to check out the possibilities. It would be a great
way to meet more people. We found Knox did an excellent job of
assembling good, compatible dorm groups. My daughter is ending her
junior year and is still good friends with many of her original suite
mates. Another way to meet more people is to join a fraternity. I don't
know much about them, but that might offer a good support group of
friends as well.

Any advice? My daughter suffers from severe depression. She withdrew from the
spring 2012 term and had to be hospitalized. She now called me 1 week before the
fall term ends that she is in a severe funk. I brought her home Saturday night.
She has 2 papers and a final this week. She said she will email her professors.
I asked her if she would like me to talk to them. She said she wants to handle
it. My question is this to you all... would you get involved? And if you would
who would you contact? Yikes...I thought we had everything under control this
fall......

Thanks for any input...I am very distraught right now and just looking for some
direction.

Thanks, Kathy

Dear Kathy,

This is so hard. I send you love, prayers and support. Depression is a tough
opponent. The fact that a) your daughter got this far this semester and b)
called you for help are GREAT signs. This is a very, very stressful time for
kids. It is my son's 3rd year at Knox and finals just flatten him. He also
deals with depression.

I don't know how far away from Knox you are. If she can get papers in (even
late) and take that final, it will be so helpful. Depression is a heavier load
when there is work hanging over your head. It will give her a sense of relief,
although maybe not of accomplishment. If she is like my son, she is a bit of a
perfectionist, wants to do her absolute best on these things and will be
reluctant to "just get them done."

What will be most helpful, since she is home, is to see her doctor/counselor.

It is VERY hard to decide when to get involved and when not to. Depression, in
many ways, is like any other illness. If a child has diabetes, there comes a
point when the child has to learn when he needs help, and how to get it on his
own. He has to learn to prevent problems and handle them when they occur. When
we step in, sometimes we deny our kids that skill...and the confidence that
comes with it. And goodness knows, folks with depression need that skill and
that confidence.

It is possible that her doctor/counselor will meet with you too...that would be
wonderful.

If her doctor/counselor determines that she is in need of intervention, that may
change what happens. If she is just worn out and anxious (which can be
powerfully overwhelming for anyone, but particularly for someone with
depression/anxiety) then being home and having a little peace and quiet to get
things done may be enough. If the latter is the case, what has worked for me
is to kindly, calmly, but firmly, give my son a deadline for the action. "I
understand that you want to do this on your own, and you should. However, it
really needs to by done by ________, or you may lose credit for the semester.
Let me know when you've taken care of it."

Having said that, one summer he lost credit for a course he was taking here at
home and I had to make sure that it was his money that he lost in order for him
to understand the "cost."

As you can see, I can't really offer you advice; it is a decision you will
ultimately have to make...but if you can meet/talk with her doctor, that will
help all of you.

Hi There,
My daughter is a junior at Knox and is away on study abroad, she suffered from
depression all through High school, but managed to get herself together
, although i can sympathize, my older daughter has withdrawn from another
school after having had a major meltdown. My general advice would be
to talk to everyone you can. Debbie Southern is the Dean of Students and is i
believe very helpful. She can put you in touch with whoever you need to be
discussing things with. I know your daughter has said that she wants to talk to
her professors herself, but my experience here,( and it is quite extensive-
albeit from dealing with a larger and somewhat more intransigent school and a
child in a major crisis) is they , when they are in the middle of a serious
crisis , they say that whey want to do things themselves, but put them aside
because they are too stressful to deal with. You need to talk to the
school personally, the school should be able to put you in touch with whoever
you need to be talking to in order to help with getting your daughter through
this terrible time she seems to be having. If they are not fully aware of the
extent of the problem they will not necessarily be able to help with the
academic side of waiving semester grades or whatever is appropriate. Or any
other issues you might be having associated with the school.

I hope this of some use to you and i wish you good luck and your daughter a
speedy and smooth recovery
  my thoughts are with you

Jane

Hi Kathy,

So sorry to hear about your daughter. If it were my daughter, I would see if
she is taking immediate action to contact her professors and, most
importantly, the Associate Dean of College, Lori Haslem at (309) 341-7214
(lhaslem@...) because Ms. Haslem is supposed to help figure out
situations where the student misses tests/papers. If your daughter is too
disabled by her depression to make contact ASAP, I would call the Dean
myself, explain the situation and ask for advice. Good luck to you and your
daughter.

Best,
Debra

I'm so sorry to hear that your daughter is having such a hard time. I'm only
a freshman parent, but I have taught at the college level for 20 years. I
would suggest letting her handle the interaction with her teachers. If you
feel that you should talk to someone at the school, I'd start by contacting
the mental health professionals that your child has been working with at
Knox, or who she could work with l if she hasn't been receiving counseling
up to now. They might be able to help you navigate what should be her
responsibility, and how you might be able to help her.

Good luck,
Kristen

Thank you all so much for your words of support! You are wonderful. I just got
an email from Lori Haslem and she is going to help me. I will keep you all
posted. I keep trying to tell my daughter that people are so supportive if you
give them a chance! And that she is not alone.

Dear Kathy,

Is your daughter seeing a counselor and a psychiatrist in Galesburg and
at home? Is she on anti-depressant medication? I'm so sorry to hear of
your daughter's depressive illness. I know first hand that this can be
devastating, both for your daughter and your family. In addition to an
anti-depressant, Cognitive therapy has had a lot of success for many,
many people with depression.

I hope your daughter can get the help she needs. My prayers are with
you and your family.

Susan

Kathy,
I hope the new meds work,we have been down the road of differing medications
with my eldest, it can be difficult to find the right one. I t can take time. If
she quit therapy because she thought it wasn't helping, might i suggest that
you try a different therapist. I might take several, but once you find the
right one, the effect they can have can be quite dramatic. My daughter didn't
really respond at all well to therapy until she found a therapist that she was
totally comfortable with.(she went through several) She is now progressing
really well and is looking to return to a college environment next fall. It
really is a slow process and difficult for all involved in it. They
need encouragement, but also some sort of structure to work in and if they are
returning to college, a plan is a must.

Best of luck, I hope it all goes well.

Jane

I'm glad to hear that you are trying other medications. It can be so
difficult to find the right combination of meds and therapy. From my own
experience, I certainly can second the comment others have made about how
important it is to find the right therapist. But, also from experience,
sometimes a person will say that therapy isn't working precisely BECAUSE it
is working‹it is getting at the root cause of the problem which can be a
very difficult process to go through, and one that some people resist for a
while because it truly gets worse before it gets better.

Good luck to your whole family. It is not easy on anyone to go through all
of this,

Kristen

Update: She went to Galesburg Thursday so she could personally talk to her
