Subject: [Dstar] July 2008 Australian D-STAR Survey

Hi All,

Firstly a thank you to everyone who participated in our first Australian D-STAR survey conducted during July.  Sorry it has taken a while to summarise the responses, but it has been very busy here during the last month.

Thanks to Robert VK3KRB who's original D-STAR Registration Form scripts I hacked around to produce the survey.

I've sorted the responses to each of the questions into individual States and Territories to assist with analysis of the data.  It should be noted that the target audience for the first survey was current D-STAR users who had access to existing D-STAR repeaters.  It was understood at the time that the survey was produced that the target audience would be limited as only a few States / Territories had operational systems.  The reason this was done was so that we could benchmark the situation at that time and then compare it again next year when it was expected that there would be D-STAR repeaters in most States / Territories.  It was interesting to see that as soon as the survey was announced through the WIA (thanks Robert) and WARG (thanks Heath) email lists that we suddenly had a lot of responses from people who were not currently D-STAR users, and therefore not part of the target audience.  We also had one response from Singapore, so have included it in the results for completeness.

In preparing the summaries it should also be noted that there are a few anomalous responses, for example a few people listed that they had access to a local D-STAR repeater even when it hadn't been installed yet.  Another example is when we asked if people supported the concept of a National D-STAR Link and then more people from a given State / Territory indicated what their preferred band would be, than had said Yes to supporting the concept.

Thanks also to everyone who contributed comments regarding the system.  There were a number of very useful comments that will help with planning as well as a number of anonymous personal attacks on individuals and organisations which was unfortunate to see.  The comments have not been included in the survey results but will be de-identified and provided to each of the respective groups for their consideration over the next week.

The survey results can be seen at:  www.dstar.org.au/survey-results.htm

Regards,

David Tilson,
VK3UR
