Hi Bill,
I know what you mean.  I have 5 huge boxes of research that I'm entering into the computer one page at a time.  Yesterday I was working on my Kessler lines and today.  I have some of the pictures but when they printed out they had very pronounced lines in them.

Can anyone put up some Kessler pictures.

Kathryn

Kathryn,

Happy to see some action on the list. I have not been working on my
Kessler lines recently. I have been researching my wife's Swedish lines.

Cham is near the Checz border but I must tell you I have no proof that Ulrich Kessler's Family came from there.  My friend did pick up the Kessler Coat of Arms while he was there but I never received anything else except a manuscript that explained the colors  and what they meant in the Coat of Arms. I had an interpreter transcribe the meanings. I have misplaced this and I will have to find it in all of my stacks of papers in my attic  LOL

I have a Cousin who traveled extensively in the European area while he was in the service and he found that our Kesslers were in Cham, Germany and that there are many Kesslers living there.  He passed this info on to me many yeaers ago and now I am not in contact with him and I do not know exactly where he is now.  The last I have known about him that he married an English Lady and is residing in England.  His name is Joseph Kessler. He hasn't corresponded with me for several years.

Dear Sunday:
I really enjoyed hearing from you.
My family came from the Ulrich Kessler who came to the U.S. around 1750 to PA.  Later they went to Virginia and to North Carolina before coming up to Montgomery County. Ohio.  Later he had a son named Joseph K. Kessler and Joseph had a son named John Bowman Kessler and John had a son named Henry Kessler and then Henry had a son named Thomas Jefferson Kessler and then Thomas had a son named James W. Kessler and then James had a son named Floyd L. Kessler and then Floyd had a son named Floyd L. Kessler, Jr. (ME).  I haven't found anyone that comes from your family in my Family Files, however, there may be a chance that we are related.
Ulrich Kessler's family came from Southwestern Germany, Bavaria which was in CHAM.  Cham is about 15 miles from Czekoslavkia.  Ulrich's parents then went to Switzerland and then migrated to U.S. around the 1750 area?
There are many Kesslers' located all over the United States (10,000+) So I say that we are all probably related.

Hello,
My maiden name is Sunday Kessler and I am from Portland Oregon. Stumbled onto your site and it sparked my curiosity if there is any relation. My grandfather was Bernard Raymond Kessler, and had three sisters: Michael, George, William, Mary, Anne and Elizabeth (Bessie). Ben Kessler's parents were Anna and Stephen (we think) Kessler and settled in St. Johns, Oregon. The mother was from Germany and Stephen was a german settler on the borders of Russia and grew up in Russia. We are guessing that Stephen and Anna met and married in the U.S.

This is the information I have right now. Don't know if this helps at all.

Paul,

You need to give us some more information to be able to help you.

Because of privacy concerns genealogy protocol on the internet limits
information available on living people. Your parents likely were born
ibn the 1940s or 1950s and are still living. A google search on their
names either produced no hits or too many hits to be helpful.

The latest census records available for searching are 1930. The 1940
census will not be available for another five years or so.

The first step in constructing a family tree is to interview all the
living relatives you can locate. You want to find out where you parents
and grandparents and great-grandparents lived, when and where they were
born, married and died. You need to build your family tree at least back
to 1930 and earlier if you can, before we can see if your line connects
with ours.

If your parents are deceased and/or you don't know any living relatives,
then different techniques need to be used to trace your family tree. I
have used courthouse birth, marriage, and death records, newspaper
obituaries, city directories, telephone books, the social security death
index (on-line), deed and probate records, etc., to track people more
recent than 1930.

You can find a lot of help from people on the internet, but we need
enough information to be able to give you that help.

Kathryn,

I think that the two sets of Kesslers in Botetourt could be related.
But what we have from DNA testing of a patrilineal descendant of Ulrich
is the results of a 12 marker test. The results match 11 out of 12
markers with the descendant of John of Botetourt (1775-1850). Family
Tree DNA rates a 11 marker match out of 12 of two men with the same
surname as "possibly related."

The other two test comparisons between a descendant of Thomas of
Muhlhofen, Germany and John of Botetourt match 36 out of 37, hence they
are said to be "tightly related." This John of Botetourt almost
certainly descends from a Kessler in Muhlhofen, Germany.

Until we have the results of a 25 marker or 37 marker test of a
patrilinear descendant of Ulrich, there is some uncertainty that Ulrich
was closely related to the other two men.

If the two sets of Kesslers in Botetourt are related, was it coincidence
that they just happened to live close to each other? Or did the families
some how keep in touch after one or both of them migrated to the new
world? I have run into this with the Wrights. Now Wright is a common
surname, so two unrelated Wright families living in the same place at
the same time often happens. But when I see names like Gowdy and
McKittrick in Ireland living in the same area as Samuel Wright in
Ireland. (Samuel being a common given name among the early Wright
families.) And then I see a Wright-McKittrick marriage in Virginia of
second generation immigrants. Then in Illinois I find two Wright-Gowdy
marriages among fifth generation descendants, I start asking myself --
is this just coincidence? Northern Ireland is not large. But families
with these surnames were tenants working under the same landlord. They
were neighbors.

Of course, when it comes to the Kesslers, if the two Kessler families in
Botetourt were related and had somehow kept in touch over the years,
what does that say about the fanciful stories the county history says
about Ulrich's immigration?

At this point until we can see more DNA evidence, we need to avoid
jumping to conclusions. The 12-marker tests are a start, but they are
subject to many false positives and a few false negatives.

It had been thought that there were two sets of Kesslers at Botetourt.  Could this be implicating that the two families are related?
I have always thought that that was possibly the case.

Subject: [Kessler-Ulrich] DNA test for a descendant of Ulrich

Yesterday, I was searching ysearch.org for DNA matches to that of my
ancestor John Lewis who was in Westerly, RI, in 1661. Among the matches
was the surname Kessler. I clicked on the link and it was David Kessler,
a descendant of Ulrich.

Only 12 markers were reported for David on ysearch. The 12 marker tests
produce a lot of false positives and even some false negatives. So the
match with different surnames does not mean anything.

But finding a DNA test for a descendant of Ulrich does. So I checked for
DNA matches between David and others with the Kessler surname. This
produced two additional matches. Both these additional tests were for 37
markers. These two men matched 11 out of 12 with David saying that they
were possibly related. These two other Kessler men matched 36 out of 37
markers with each other. They almost certainly share a recent common
ancestor.

Here is the information from ysearch on these two men's ancestry.
Ysearch ID G4G5J
First Name: Thomas
Last Name: Kessler
Year Born: About 1623
Year Died: 1686
Country of Origin: Muhlhofen, Germany

Ysearch ID ZMSPK
First Name: John
Last Name: Kessler
Year Born: About 1775
Year Died: 1850
Additional information about Paternal Line:
John Kessler m. 8 March 1794 Nancy Waskey Fredrick Co., MD. John Kessler
died Botetourt Co., VA. They had seven children

So we have a possible nephew or cousin of Ulrich who lived in Frederick
Co, MD; and a possible ancestor or uncle of some sort of Ulrich who
lived in Germany in the 1600s.

To prove up these possible relationships we need David to upgrade his
test to 25-37+ markers or one or more patrilineal descendants of Ulrich
to step forward and be tested for 25+ markers.

Family Tree DNA has three surname projects that accept the Kessler
surname. The Kessler project does not publish its results on the project
webpage. Most projects do. I really can't recommend joining the Kessler
project because you handicap yourself with respect to being able to
compare results with other possible relatives. But both the Kepler and
Castle projects do publish results and accept particpants surnamed Kessler.

Only about half the people tested take the trouble to post their results
on ysearch.

Let me show you why I think posting results is important. I will use the
Wrights as an example. Here is the website:
<http://www.wright-dna.org/dna/R1b1Results.html>
If you scroll down or search for "1776 William," you will find a group
of six men who have been tested and have closely matching DNA. On my
computer this group is colored tan.

The two labeled "1776 William" are myself and a proven sixth cousin. We
got the results for the 12 markers back first. We matched 10 out of 12.
Probably not related! That shook us up, but when we got the results back
for the next 13 markers we matched perfectly on them, proving that we
share a recent common ancestor.

The next result to come back was Kit 51030. Another sixth cousin. His
fell midway between the first two of us to be tested.

Then we received a notice of a match from N6463. This guy does not fit
anywhere in our family tree. He descends from a different Wright
immigrant. But there are enough similarities in what we know about the
two immigrants that we believe that both immigrants share a common
ancestor back in Ireland.

Kit #94268 is another sixth cousin of mine and a fifth cousin of Kit
13074. This is Bob Wright and his DNA appears to be the signature DNA
for the group and represents that of our immigrant William Wright.

The last match kit N48391 is interesting. We have no indication that he
is of Scotch-Irish descent like the rest of us. We have not found the
original immigrant, and his family tree does not connect with either of
the other two trees. Yet with a 25 out of 25 match with our signature
DNA, he has a recent common ancestor with us somewhere back in the "old
country."

One more test is not shown in our group, but one of the markers came up
with a wild card reading. About six lines above is John Kit 11697+,
aclose relative of N48391. He matches 24 out of 25 markers with the
signature DNA, but the one mismatch is off by a count of 4 from the rest
of us. FamTrDNA has double checked the reading and confirmed it. This
suggests that he is not related. The mismatch is such that he did not
receive a notice of a match from FamTrDNA when our tests were done and
we did not receive a notice of a match when he upgraded from 12 to 25
markers.

So what do we have. The DNA test results have given the Wrights two
additional family lines who immigrated at different times to different
colonies and for whom no paper record exists that says we are related.
But DNA tests show we are.

So I hope to see some more Kessler men with DNA tests so we can prove or
disprove these additional links.

Bill Wright

I am still here, but have sort of given up on finding anything more on my line
which goes back to Joseph(?) buried in Ohio, then seems to disappear with the
Philadelphia story and the Dunkards, etc. It has been awhile since I have
worked on my heritage scrapbook and I kind of forget the details now.

Always interested in anything new. My name and address changed a while ago -
from Carolyn Kissel to Carolyn Hassall and address is now in North Carolina
instead of Florida.

Lots of cancellations (250) of schools and other organizations. I have thought about the Kessler DNA a few times, however, I haven't as yet pursued anything as yet????

<http://www.wright-dna.org/dna/R1b1Results.html>
