Disability Rights and Independent Living Movement icons include the late Ed Roberts, the first student in Cowell Hospital's residence program for physically disabled students and later director of California's Department of Rehabilitation; Joan Leon, who served as administrator for the Center for Independent Living and the California Department of Rehabilitation; and Berkeley graduate Judy Heumann, served as assistant secretary of the U.S. Department of Education,is currently the Director of the Department of Disability Services for the District of Columbia.
