Keep Austin Weird Song Contest
"KEEP AUSTIN WEIRD" started appearing a couple years ago around
Austin on bumper stickers and T-shirts. It's sort of a backlash to
all the changes going on around Austin. There are many unique
eclectic weird people, places, and things about
Austin that make it special. Progress sometimes makes them disappear.
Austin American Statesman columnist John Kelso did a feature on the
phrase. The person who is trying to trademark it and the person who
claims he created it.

This ruckus inspired the New York Times article
by Jim Yardley which has been reprinted in several newspapers around
the country.

"Keep Austin Weird" lyric. (below)
Monday Dec 9, 2002 KVET 98.1 FM morning personality

He said "I'd like to hear a CD of the song and hopefully it's
country."

verse 1
I saw a guy at Eeyores birthday
wearing a sock as his costume
I smelled a girl at Spamorama
wearing spam as her perfume
Leslie on Sixth and Congress
has the best two legs in town
Crazy Carl in front of Esthers
Keeps Carnations spinnin round
climb
But Austin's lost the Armadillo,
Liberty Lunch, and Hole in the Wall
Here's what we need to tell those folks
down at city hall
Chorus
We oughta Keep Austin Weird
We oughta keep Austin strange
There's things about this town
That we never oughta change
We oughta Keep Austin Weird
Before we lose what we love
If Austin keeps evolving
It won't stay the way it was
or you can do the last 4 lines this way too
If Austin keeps evolving
It won't stay the way it was
We oughta Keep Austin Weird
Before we lose what we love
verse 2
Austin still has hippy hollow
and lights on Thirty Seventh Street
we've got Sweet Sara on mount bonnell road
serving beers over at dry creek
And seven eight seven o four
hasn't lost its eclectic charm
We've all seen things at Barton springs
We can only call bizarre
climb repeat
Chorus Repeat
Bridge
Austinites unite
Together we are strong
Let's protect our odd legacies
or soon they'll all be gone
Chorus Repeat
