Dear Karaites and Friends,

After a careful search of the skies around Jerusalem and reports from
other new moon observers, we can conclude that the new moon marking the
beginning of the seventh biblical month has not been seen over the Land
of Israel. We can expect it to be easily visible tomorrow over all of
the Land of Israel, meaning that Yom HaTeruah (The Day of Noise Making)
will begin tomorrow evening (Fri 10 Sep) at sunset.

Before closing, a brief note about new moon observations. There was a
group of Karaites who traveled to the Eilat area (near the Red Sea)
hoping that better viewing conditions there would allow them to see the
new moon this evening. As it turns out, they were not able to see the
new moon, but had they indeed seen the new moon, Karaite Insights would
have rejected their new moon observation, for the following reasons:

1. The observation of the new moon is meant to be a sign for all of
Israel, not an event for a limited number of specialists who are viewing
it from a specific location. Therefore, for the new moon to be declared
visible, it (is my strong opinion that it) must meet the following
criteria: (a) the new moon must be visible to the average naked-eye
observer and not just to well-trained specialists or those with
exceptional eyesight, and (b) the new moon must be generally visible
over the Land of Israel, and not just from specific, limited locations.
Let us remember what it says in Genesis 1:14, "And God said, 'Let there
be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night,
and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years.'"

2. A secondary reason, although the first reason is already enough to
reject any sighting of the new moon tonight , is that Eilat is outside
the Biblical borders of the Land of Israel, and may very well be outside
of the promised, extended borders of the Land of Israel, "from the river
of Egypt to the ... Euphrates" (see Genesis 15:18) -- depending on what
is meant by "the river of Egypt". In fact, it is arguably far more
appropriate to witness the new moon from the current country of Jordan,
parts of which encompass the original territory of the Israelite tribes
(Reuven, Gad and half of the tribe of Menashe.)

Wishing you all a good evening and with the help of Yehowah, I will be
back tomorrow to report on the sighting of the new moon.

May Yehowah Be With You,
Melech ben Ya'aqov
Jerusalem, Israel
