Bingo
For December, you are welcome to join us for bingo every Friday and
Sunday, Saturdays 15th 22nd and 29th. Be ready for eyes down 20.45
for every session.
We regret that due to the Gambling Act 2005 we have had to have to
stop our Lucky Number draw on Saturdays. The reason is that we are at
risk of having to buy a licence costing £988.00 followed by an annual
fee currently at £1769.00 per year if we pay out more than £2000.00
in one week more than once a year. It is with great sadness that we
have to take yet another blow to the solar plexus from a Government
that seems to have no understanding of the value of our clubs to our
society.
After having listened to our loyal Saturday bingo players, the lucky
number will continue until it is won and £250 will be paid. The sum
will be paid out of the general fund and not out of ticket sales.
Please note that no money has gone missing. The decision to stop the
Lucky Number Draw is purely driven to safeguard your winnings for the
future. This should ensure we keep under the £2000 limit.

Festive Season dining
The Christmas menu is available from 1st December. You are invited to
partake of a magnificent feast for only £12.95 or only £8.95 for a
children's portion. If you are coming with a party, please telephone
and book a time and table so that Carolyn and her team can make sure
all is set up for you.
The kitchen will close 24th to 26th December inclusive and New Year's
Eve and New Year's Day.
Baguettes/Rolls will be available Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, New
Year's Eve and New Year's Day. A fresh batch will be made up every
day, but once gone there will be no facility to make up more. So, if
peckish, don't hold back!
Christmas Day
At the end of an exciting day, what better way to wind down than to
pop to the club for a pleasant convivial evening with your friends?
If you have already had a quiet day what better than to come to the
club for a friendly chat and a festive drink?
Lunchtime or evening, our staff will be here to help make this a very
merry Christmas day for you.
An evening of Irish Music
The time 20.00 to 23.00
The date Thursday 13th December
The Place The Concert Room
Bob & Geoff are delighted to present an evening of Irish Music by the
medium of the compact disc.
Come along. Sing along. Dance along and laugh along.
Just turn up. No fee.
Just Bob & Geoff doing their level best to give everyone a good night
out.
Entertainment-Fridays
Having looked at the overall result of the November trial of having
no entertainment on Fridays, the Committee has come to the conclusion
that it is the wish of the majority that we should have live
entertainment.
We are therefore pleased to announce that we will present three
evenings of live entertainment every weekend with effect from Friday
7th December.
Club Facilities
Concert Room
Why not hold your special family celebration at the club? With our
comfortable function room and magnificent catering facilities we can
offer a buffet from about £4.75 per head to a full sit-down meal for
up to 150 people.
Be it a Christening, Birthday, Wedding, Anniversary Reunion or any
other special event here is the place to hold it. It is regretted
that, due to unfortunate experiences in the past, we do not
facilitate 18th birthday celebrations.
The charge for the room is only £110.00 for the night on a Saturday
or £55.00 Monday to Thursday. You can pay these prices for an hour in
some venues!
This facility is only available to our own members for themselves and
close family. For 2008 we are making this facility available for more
Saturdays, but bookings are already coming in, so as soon as you have
a date in mind it will be best to write in to the Secretary and book.
Minibus
For that family day out or airport trip or transport to your holiday
destination in UK why not book our Minibus?
Our rates are competitive and our service as offered by Malcolm our
driver is second to none.
This facility is only open to our members and their families. The
only restrictions are that the bus is available, a member hires the
bus and that member must travel on the bus and payment must be made
seven days before the hire date.
Phone the Secretary for a quote and availability.
Mobile top up
Don't forget to always top up your phone at the Club. There is no
cost to you and the club benefits from a small commission. This is a
small way for members to help the club at no cost or inconvenience.
You know it makes sense.
Credit and Debit Card Payments
No need to worry about running out of cash while in the club.
You can pay now with your credit or debit cards and get cash back
with your debit card only.
There is no charge to you for this service, but it does cost the club
about £100 per month. Whilst there is no formal limit for use, a
minimum spend of £5.00 for use of your card will be greatly
appreciated.
Email Newsletter
If you want a copy of the newsletter Emailed to you every month, just
let the Editor have your Email address. This may also be used for any
stop press items that may arise between newsletters. Benefit from the
new technology and be in the know.
Dave Yates Steps Down
It is with sincere regret that we report that Dave has stepped down
from his position on the Committee. Dave's service to the Club spans
back over decades. As doorman, his reputation was legend. His record
keeping was reported on in "The Journal" and his firm but fair
treatment of all who entered the Club is still remembered fondly by
many. His work on the Committee has always been exemplary; this along
with his courteousness and dry sense of humour made him a welcome
asset on the management team.
Our thanks go to Dave for his past service and we look forward to his
regular visits to the Club as a member who can hold his head up
proudly knowing he has always been a giving member who has done us
proud.
We are pleased to announce that Matt Wright has been co-opted on to
the Committee. Matt has been a member since 1977 and been a
contributor to the newsletter in the past. We wish him well in his
endeavours on our behalf.
Games News
The magnificent duo strikes again!
It is with great pride we can announce that Jimmy Kane and Andrew
Harris reached the quarterfinals of the National Cribbage Pairs
Championship this year.
Unfortunately the cards were evil to them in the quarterfinal match
and they were beaten.
The Leisure Secretary of the CIU wrote stating, "It was an excellent
performance to reach this stage of the Contest".
Skittles K O Cup for Kingsley Members and Off Duty Bar Staff only
This popular annual event will be held on Friday 21st December at
20.00.
The entry form is on the skittles notice board in the games room and
the £1.00 entrance fee must be paid to Geoff Friday by Friday 14th
December.
A good time is always had by all, including your Secretary who
invariably gets knocked out in the first round. A recommended event!
Youth Pool Club
The club for 8 to 18 year olds is taking a break until the New Year
when it will restart on Saturdays from 13.00 to 16.00.
Young people are taught the rules, the skills and the etiquette of
the game. They are taught how to properly maintain their equipment.
Great importance is laid on respect for opponents, property and
equipment. The emphasis is on enjoying the game and the competition
Many of the original members have gone on to the County League. If
your children are interested please bring them along on 5th January.
Parents are requested to stay on the premises. They may stay in the
room where the bar is open. This is the one time when under 18's are
served at the bar (with pop and sweets!)
Offers of help from parents who can give their time regularly are
welcome.
Obituaries
It is with deep regret that we announce the sudden death of Stella
Austin. Stella, with her husband Bill, has been a regular at the club
for decades. She always came to the club looking immaculate and had a
sharp mind and sense of humour. She will be sorely missed by all.
Bill would like to thank the Committee, members and especially the
Friday lunchtime gang for their kind thoughts and floral tribute.
Also we regret to announce the death of John Leatherland. John has
been a member since 1970. We understand poor health stopped him
coming to the club in recent years.
Our sympathy and thoughts go to the family, friends and loved ones of
these two special people.
Charitable Donations
We have donated £50.00 for a charitable event in aid of cancer
support run by our neighbours "First 4 Blinds"
We have also donated £50.00 to Mencap to help in fitting out their
purpose built facility in the grounds of Delapre Abbey
Recommended winter exercise plan for all
No matter what our age, we all need to keep fit over the winter. We
take the liberty of offering some timely advice.
1. Take one Weetabix
2. Take one Aero Chocolate Bar
3. Crumble the Aero over the Weetabix
Voila! Winter Aerobix

Smoking Ban
In accordance with their legal requirements, the Committee has had to
charge a member with smoking on club premises. This is the first case
and the perpetrator was given a severe reprimand.
The Committee wish it to be known that any further cases brought
before them will be dealt with, with ever increasing severity.
The law lays the burden of being upheld on the Committee and
transgression of the law cannot be treated lightly.

Editorial
The smoking ban is now causing your club real hardship. There can be
no doubt that it is a good thing for many reasons, but the way it has
been implemented in our clubs is plain wrong.
When there was a rebellion against smoking at the beginning of the
last century, the problem was overcome with the introduction of
smoking rooms. It worked! Almost everyone was happy. I suppose there
were the habitual moaners even then who would never have been
satisfied!
Why can this not happen in our clubs today? With proper safeguards
for staff and proper air filtration, smokers and non-smokers could
enjoy the club side by side without causing offence to each other.
If every member of our club, both smokers and non-smokers were to
write to their local Member of Parliament, Local Newspaper and
telephone their local radio station, perhaps someone in authority
with a tad of common sense would take up our cause.
If everyone were to write within the next seven days, what an impact
this would have! It might not be the English way but sometimes we
must stand up and fight for what is right.
It must be stressed that Working Men's Clubs are not public places
and the ban was intended for public places. Our clubs should be home
from home and recognised as such.
We can, and should be allowed to, look after all of our members in
fairness and without any prejudice.
