Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche is an accomplished mountain yogi and great scholar. He was born in Kham in eastern Tibet and received meditation instructions and teachings from a very early age. Khenpo Tsultrim Rinpoche was High Abbot of Rumtek Monastery under the guidance of His Holiness Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, the 16th Karmapa.
Rinpoche has mastered the essential teachings of the four schools of Tibetan Buddhism. He received a Khenpo degree from His Holiness the 16th Karmapa, and the equivalent Geshe Lharampa degree from His Holiness Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama. Rinpoche also received extensive teachings from the former Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche of the Sakya tradition. Rinpoche received the complete Rinchen Terdzo initiations from H.H. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche in Bhutan, along with transmission of the Dzogchen text, Lam Rim Yeshe Nyingpo (The Gradual Path of the Heart of Wisdom), from Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche when it was given to the King of Bhutan. Rinpoche has also fully realized the Six Yogas of Naropa, Chod, and Mahamudra.
Rinpoche is especially known for his prodigious scholarship and vast compassion. He is also known for his accomplishment, often compared to the great yogi Milarepa, whom he resembles in both substance and style. Rinpoche has no fixed abode, few possessions; and he has practiced for years in solitude, sometimes sealed in darkness. Like Milarepa, he is known for his spontaneous songs of realization (Skt. "dohas, ") which offer insight into genuine reality. Such dohas may emerge to answer a question, clarify a difficult point, or to expand or comment on one of Milarepa's own songs.
With the power to transmit and illuminate the essence of the two texts chosen for this visit, Khenpo Tsultrim Rinpoche is a teacher who can liberate upon simply being seen and heard.
Root Text on the Madhyamika by Arya Nagarjuna
Nagarjuna's greatest philosophical work, the Mulamadhyamakakarika, is one of the most influential works on Middle Way philosophy. Rinpoche will give commentary central to students' contemplation and meditation on the Madhyamika reasonings.
"Nagarjuna refutes the idea that things truly exist, but he does not say anything else. That is the end of the discussion. The reason Nagarjuna does things in this way is that the ultimate truth is something in which there are no other names at all. So there is nothing that can be said about it. The ultimate truth transcends all convention, all concepts, all terms." --Khenpo Tsultrim Rinpoche, Shenpen Osel Magazine

Four Thoughts that Turn the Mind to the Path of Awakening (San
Francisco)
Date: Sunday, April 1, 2001
Time: 10:00AM - 4:00PM PDT (GMT-07:00)
Teachings by Lama Jinpa.
Lunch break from 12PM-2PM.
Cost: Non-members $20. Members $10.
Within the Tibetan tradition, four thoughts on reality help us
to internalize our understanding of the Four Noble Truths. These
four thoughts that turn the mind to Dharma also help us to
overcome our habitual inertia, and provide the impetus and
motivation for our Buddhist practice. The four thoughts that
turn the mind to Dharma are taken as a profound contemplation
leading us to a direct confrontation with our own personal
reality: the preciousness of our human birth and the opportunity
that it affords us to practice, the transitoriness of all
phenomena including the very temporary and short-lived nature of
our opportunity to practice, the importance of taking karma into
account and recognizing that what we do with this opportunity
does make an enormous difference; and the unsatisfactoriness of
samsara and the appreciation that there is really no good or
useful alternative to applying ourself to the study and practice
of the Dharma.

Six Paramitas: Conduct of a Bodhisattva (San Francisco)
Date: Sunday, March 18, 2001
Time: 10:00AM - 4:00PM PST (GMT-08:00)
Teachings by Ven. Lama Lodu Rinpoche.
Lunch break from 12-2PM.
The Six Paramitas (Perfections) outline the conduct of a
bodhisattva. "When we practice ethics and morals, patience
naturally follows. Patience in turn produces great diligence and
diligence leads to meditative concentration. This leads to the
development of wisdom whereby one gains analytical and
penetrating insight into the ultimate nature of reality." (Lama
Lodu Rinpoche, Quintessence of the Animate and Inanimate) In the
Tibetan monastic tradition, many months of study are devoted to
this vast subject, but given the fact that most of us have
limited time, Rinpoche has decided to devote two full weekends
in March 2001 so that students will be able to gain access to
the divisions, levels, individual characteristics, etymology and
structure of this profound transmission. Ideally, participants
should attend all four days to fully comprehend these teachings;
however, even one day's attendance will be of great benefit in
providing listeners with insight into the conduct and view of
the bodhisattva, which is absolute bodhicitta (the true nature
of reality).
Cost:
Non-members, $50 per day, $150 for series.
Members, $25 per day, $75 for series.

UNESCO International Petition to Safeguard Afghanistan
Cultural Heritage
We, the undersigned, plead for an immediate end to the
Taliban edict to demolish Afghanistan's cultural heritage.
We further urge the Taliban spiritual leader Mullah
Mohammed Omar to enter into dialogue with the international
community -including the Arab and Islamic governments that
overwhelmingly have condemned these actions - in order to
explore proposals to safeguard this irreplaceable cultural
heritage from further, senseless destruction.
The edict of the 26th of February 2001 to destroy pre-
Islamic and Buddhist objects-including the world's largest
standing Buddha statues at Bamiyan-runs counter to all the
basic principles of respect, tolerance and the wisdom upon
which Islam is based, and is a breach of the Taliban pledge
made in 1999. We plead with Taliban authorities to stop
this irreversible assault on two millennia of Afghanistan's
artistic and cultural achievements, treasured not only as
the spiritual birthright of Buddhists everywhere but also
as a universal cultural heritage for people of all faiths
and nationalities.

Kata Offering and Long Life Prayer Ceremony (San Francisco)
Date: Saturday, February 24, 2001
Time: 10:00AM - 12:00PM PST (GMT-08:00)
Traditional Tibetan kata offering ceremony, tsok (ritual sharing
of blessed food), and prayers for the long life of His Holiness
the Dalai Lama, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, His
Holiness Kalu Rinpoche, and other revered Tibetan lamas.
It is traditional in the Tibetan community to give a white scarf
(kata) as a gesture of love and respect to parents, worthy
friends, and beloved teachers at important occasions such as
homecomings, departures and holy days. The kata represents the
purest wishes of the giver toward the recipient and expresses
the sincere hope that they will be fulfilled. It will be of
special merit to make such offerings to the eminent gurus and
our esteemed resident teacher, Lama Lodu Rinpoche, on the first
day of the Tibetan new year. Katas will be available at the
ceremony.
Please note the following event has just been added to the KDK
Calendar.
Event Name: The Turning Point (Los Altos)
Date: Sunday, March 4, 2001
Time: 12:30pm-4:30pm
Reminders: 3 days before the event.
Description: Teachings by Lama Jinpa at the Los Altos Public Library.
Break from 2-3pm.
Our daily lives are a rich source for reflecting on our situation in
the world and how to free ourselves from the unsatisfactory nature
of "samsara," or cyclic existence. Buddhism teaches many methods for
tapping into the vein of meaningful existence underlying all
experiences. Join Lama Jinpa for a teaching on how Tibetan Buddhist
principles can help you develop a daily practice of reflection to
prepare for the liberation of ultimate happiness.
HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

Breaking News reported by Voice of America, and the Tribune, which
covers Dharamsala!
According to a February 1 Voice of America press bulletin, the
Karmapa has been granted refugee status by India. This report has has
been repeated by the Indian newspaper, The Tribune, which covers
Dharamsala affairs. Both reports are apparently based on Tibetan
Government in exile statements and have not been confirmed by Indian
officials. As India continues its enormous relief efforts to relieve
the suffering resulting from the massive earthquake in Gujrarat, the
Karmapa is conducting prayer services for the suffering in Gujarat.
May His Holiness truly be free to take his seat at Rumtek, complete
his studies, and enjoy a long and healthy life to continue his
efforts to bring the Dharma to all sentient beings!
EXCERPTS:
The Tribune's report is still somewhat tentative: "The 17th Karmapa,
Ogyen Trinley Dorjee's ordeal of being labelled as an illegal
immigrant in India has finally come to an end, with the Indian
Government reportedly granting him refugee status and lifting all
restrictions imposed on his free movement. According to sources, the
Indian authorities have conveyed their decision to the exiled Tibetan
government that the head of the Karma Kagyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism
would now be free to undertake pilgrimage to various monasteries and
other Buddhist religious shrines."
. . .
Meanwhile, the Karmapa is leading prayer services in India in memory
of the earthquake victims in Gujarat, according to the The Tribune 's
report in a separate story. His Holiness Karmapa is conducting daily
services at Gyuto Monastery, his current temporary residence, "in
memory of those killed by the devastating earthquake in Gujarat and
the affected families." The Karmapa's General Secretary, Tenzin
Namgyal, stated that "the prayers have been inspired out of
compassion and mercy for those affected by the earthquake and in
sharing the grief and suffering of the nation." The prayer services
have been ongoing since the earthquake hit Gujarat, along with 100
monks from Sherab Ling monastery. In addition to praying for the
Gujarat victims, the Karmapa has "invoked the blessing of Guru
Padmasambhava to ward off any such calamity in the highly seismic-
prone area of Dharamsala."

May all be auspicious, and may all the prayers of His Holiness and
all buddhas and bodhisattvas be fulfilled!

MAHAKALA PUJA
During Tibetan New Year an extended Mahakala puja is traditonally
performed at KDK to clear away negativity from the previous year and
create positive conditions for the coming year. Lama Lodu Rinpoche
will lead the proceedings, which begin on 21 February, accompanied by
senior KDK students. Monks and lamas from around the Bay Area have
also been invited to participate and it is hoped that they will be
able to join us. Since the text for this meditation is in Tibetan,

SUKHASIDDHI EMPOWERMENT
Sunday, February 25, 2001 at 10AM
RSVP REQUIRED FOR LUNCHEON, CALL 415-752-5454.
Lama Lodu Rinpoche invites all to take part in the long-life
empowerment of the wisdom dakini Sukhasiddhi, followed by luncheon.
Please call KDK if you will be attending the luncheon, so there will
be enough for everybody!
The dakini Sukhasiddhi is the human form of the enlightened immortal
female who, through her realization, met the true Buddha Vajradhara
and received his wisdom, transmitting it to Yogi Kyungpo Naljor and
thereby establishing the Shangpa lineage in Tibet. This empowerment
is part of the unbroken Shangpa lineage of which Kalu Rinpoche is the
holder. Kalu Rinpoche transmitted this teaching to Lama Lodu
Rinpoche.
