KDK belongs to the Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, headed by His Holiness the 17th Karmapa, Ugyen Trinley Dorje. The center was founded in 1974 by His Eminence Khyabje Dorje Chang Kalu Rinpoche, and focuses on the Karma Kagyu and Shangpa Kagyu traditions.
Ven. Lama Lodu Rinpoche, in his infinite kindness, has served as resident lama at KDK since he was appointed to that position in 1976 by His Holiness the 16th Karmapa and Kalu Rinpoche.
