Hi nicole, just an email to let you know this message about meeting single men is nothing to do with me, I live in england so local men in the usa would be no good to me, i knew Asa because i met him when i came to san francisco, i agree completely with you the person using the site for hooking up is a joker and very insensative, i myself thought it was out of order when i received the email this morning, but i just wanted to assure its nothing to do with me, best wishes Bernadette

I think the people who put out spam have a way of automatically detecting Yahoo groups that haven't had a lot of activity and then use the groups to spread their ugly messages. I've seen it happen to several groups that I belong to. One way to stop it is for us to post messages more often.

Hello everyone,

I just found out a STAR has been bought in Asa's name by a dear
friend of Asa's. Now we can all look up in the sky and think more
well wishes for him. I will get a copy of the actual star soon.

Also, the Batesville Casket Company through Batesville's Living
Memorial Program has planted a TREE in a national forest as a
memorial for Asa. Duggan's Funeral Service made the request on our
family's behalf shortly after his burial.

The one year anniversary of Asa's death (06-06-06) is coming up. I
would like to honor him on the week-end before or the week-end after
that day.

Suggestions are welcome. Mesha has suggested having several families
come together in support, to remember lost loved ones that have died
in the month of June, due to police involvement. Friends, family and
supporting community are always welcome to speak out, post and be
heard at any time.

Thank you,
Asa's mother and family

And if one of you or all of you as a group would write a story about the event or some commentary - personal, political, whatever you're moved to write - we'd certainly want to publish it in the Bay View. You and Mesha are both eloquent writers, Kathy, and so are others in your family, judging from the emails I've seen. These injustices won't stop unless we speak out.

Let me know what yall think ?

"Juneteenth in the Fillmore
Are we FREE yet on SF PLantation?"
Families of Victims of Police Brutality speak out, June 19th 2007

Juneteenth celebrates the implementation  of freedom of the slaves in Amerikkka , 3 years after the proclamation of the abolition of slavery.
Without phones, telegrams, fax, internet, or often reading skills, and with slavemasters' reluctance to spread the news...they had not spread out in many areas...
142 years after "freedom". the "slave catchers" are still killing our unarmed Brothers and Sisters of Color. Yes, the Slave Catchers, freshly out of the boats from Europe. originally hired at minimum wage  to hunt and kill slaves running for freedom...the very origin of US Police Department.

    Asa Benjamin Sullivan
                        "Big O" Lefiti

                                          and
Idriss Stelley
All lost their young lives under a rain of PD Bullets,
IN JUNE

We could get some memorial time on Juneteenth' stage to honor their lives and your families,
read the names of all who were stolen from us by Police Violence in the Bay Area for the past 10 years,
do a healing ritual.
push for a free table (they cost hundreds..)at the event
pass out info and resources,
and collect donations for your families.

Not easy to get granted, the issue is controvertial, at a time when Sup Mirkarimi is pushing for more beat cops in his district where Juneteenth will be taking place.... But we would have exactly 2 months to prepare. ISF could cover press release, and post on all our list serves. Probably several alternative papers would let us post a free announcement.

Just an idea !
I cannot and would not dare do it alone, my health and strength are getting bad, if yall want to do it, I will provide all the support our foundation can muster.

One unique and powerful aspect of your compounded grief, is that you have been supporting each other action plans, rallies,  suscribe to each other websites, and continue to stay in touch with each  other to share love and support.

This strength and unity is a mighty powerful example to our poor community of Color and community at large !

So, interested, anyone?

A Friend Most True !

I need to know if you're my true friend,
Will you be by my side until the end?

Can I tell you my secrets deep?
And trust them in your heart you'll keep?

We are neither of us without our flaws,
Can you accept mine as I will yours?

I'll be a shoulder to cry on when you're blue,
Will you be there for me when I need you?

No matter how busy I will make time for you,
If you are busy will you make time for me too?

I will take your hand and comfort your tears,
Will you hold me and soothe my fears?

I will give you joy and many warm smiles,
Can we share that even across many miles?

I will not forget what's important to you,
Will you remember what's important to me too?

With you my most favorite things I'll share,
If only I know do you truly care?

If you can accept me as I do you,
Then I will know you are a friend most true.

This Middle aged man was going through his mid-life crisis so he went out and bought him a new bright red Porsche. So he decided to take his new Porsche on a test drive down the interstate one day.

running porsche

He got up to about 85 mph and all of a sudden he saw this highway patrolman with his blue lights and siren blaring coming toward him. He decided he and his new Porsche would outrun the officer. So the man sped up to 95 mph,and then to 105 mph, but the patrolman was still coming.

traffic chasing porsche

The man finally came to his senses and said to himself, "This is crazy, I could go to jail for this," so he pulled over. The patrolman came to the car and told the man, "It has been a long day and I am tired. If you can give me an excuse no one else has ever given me I will let you go."

traffic policeman

So the man told the officer, "Last night my wife ran off with a patrolman and when I seen you chasing me I thought you were trying to bring her back." The officer looked at the man and said, "Have a nice day."

Hello everyone,

The one year anniversary will be coming up on June 6th, a Wednesday. For Asa's memorial alter we continue to place flowers by the tree from time to time

Nicole, baby Asa's mother, and I, as well as other family and friends are planning to meet at 2 Garces Drive, San Francisco,  on the sidewalk and in front of the tree of the apartment building at Villas Parkmerced Apartments where Asa was killed. ( between the hours of aprox. 3:30 p.m and 5:30 p.m).  This time is flexible.  I believe Nicole is planning to be out there most of the day. Please feel free to arrive anytime throughout the day of the 6th as some people will be working and others have children to attend to.  Also, we are extending the time to include the whole week-end for others to stop by.

Everyone is welcome to go to the tree in front of the apartment. PLEASE BE RESPECTFUL OF THIS PROPERTY. We are staying on the sidewalk and in front of the tree area only. We are not allowed to wander into the courtyard of the complex or disturb any tennant. Parking is a little tight and there are no bathroom facilities. It does get windy and cold out there at times. In any case, we are there to remember Asa, and how I feel his unjustified death was at the hands of a few San Francisco Police Officers, who used excessive force.

It has been suggested that we try to bring natural mementoes to leave by the tree, such as flowers.

Please communicate by phone, email and word of mouth. We have some time for suggestions before the 6TH of June arrives.

Thank you,

Kathy Expinosa, mother of Asa B. Sullivan

Taylor Neaman is the Youth Program Coordinator and Operations Manager for Native Graphix. Following her job leading writing workshops with youth in Bay Area juvenile halls, Taylor came to HOMEY with an interest in working with similar youth, but in their communities, as a deterrent to the criminal justice system. Taylor first started studying screenprinting at the Mission Cultural Center, but learned alongside HOMEY how to use industry equipment when she began volunteering with them in 2003. She helped Native Graphix obtain its business license and has spent the past two years with HOMEY supporting youth in Native Graphix, leading the screenprinting and entrepreneurship program. She has her own line of hand-screenprinted and hand sewn clothes, taylor-made clothes (taylor-made-it.com), and is finally, understanding how to use Quickbooks. But Taylor’s greatest achievement has been at HOMEY, getting her youth to eat and enjoy vegetables (green beans only so far).

David Sanchez is a classically trained printmaker who brings his 10 years of experience screenprinting to HOMEY. David's interest in screenprinting first began in his hometown state of Guanajuato, Mexico. It further developed when he met Rene Castro at the Mission Cultural Center back in 1987. He also worked for Walden Graphics assisting maestro Chuy Campusano (RIP) on printing anti-alcohol and drug abuse posters and t-shirts. David has a BA in Print Making, and Cultural Anthropology from SFSU, where he studies several traditional and multi-media techniques. He has been in the screenprinting industry since 1992, working at various Bay Area shops. David devoted much of his free time training HOMEY staff and volunteers to screenprint, as well as doing production for HOMEY. He is now Lead Printer at Native Graphix, although he still finds time to pursue his art in his spare time. He has a large portfolio of prints---etchings, woodcuts, linocuts, and lithographs---which will be available to view and purchase through HOMEY in the future.

In 2003 Mauricio decided to get more involved at HOMEY and their printing endeavors. Using the professional equipment HOMEY had recently acquired, he began to learn to screenprint with the help of other volunteers. He spent the last two years at HOMEY supporting youth development and training youth to screenprint. He now is focusing his work at HOMEY on Native Graphix, printing client orders and HOMEY’s own line of socially conscious tees.

Dearest Mesha:

I hope you are feeling better.  I am, a little.  As I said before, of course parents of loved ones killed by the police are more than welcome.  There are panels on the quilt of folks killed by the police, like Aaron Williams, Larry Lumpkin, Squeaky and others, I believe.  We've welcomed them from the start of the annual ceremony.  In fact, early on, we allowed them to speak as well and geared them towards the media, when the media was there in droves (which has changed over the years).  But, there has never been any doubt or hesitation in having them a part of the quilt.

Hope they can come at this late notice.

Blessings,

Greetings, Folks:

These days, my internet use is way down and I'm not online much.  My mailbox has been swamped with spam and some of them got missed.  I'm so sorry you didn't get the location.  I had attached the flier for the event when I sent it to Ariel.  It is attached to this one.  The usual location means the Southeast Community Facility at 1800 Oakdale, in the Alex Pitcher, Jr. room where all the large meetings are held.  One year, we had it at Ella Hill Hutch.  This year we sent out letters asking local churches if we could have it at one of them.  We received "no" response from "any" of the churches.  So, we went ahead with the "usual" location.  Thanks for getting on the case, Mesha, and thanks for sending it out too, Ariel.  Much love.

We hope you can make it!

Blessings,

Dear SEVAP Organizers,

(c/c all relevant SF City Gov Websites),

We just received the following announcement from our dear friend Roberto Ariel Vargas (Latino Community Policing Board):

_____________________________________________________________
Dear Loved Ones, Friends &Colleagues:
The Special Emphasis Victim Assistance Program (SEVAP), a project of the San Francisco District Attorney's Office, will be holding the 13th Annual SF Homicide Memorial Quilt Panel Dedication Ceremony next week, May 31, 2007
at the usual location. A flier is attached for you to print, copy and/or forward to others.
As in the past, there will be dinner, music and words of comfort and wisdom. Co-sponsors of this event are the Southeast San Francisco Critical Incident Recovery Team (SESF CIRT), Mothers Against Guns In Communities (M.A.G.I.C.), Voice of the Community and the Victim Services, also of the Office of the SF District Attorney. We look forward to seeing those who are working to assist affected families, loved ones and communities of homicide victims along with other concerned citizens.
Attached is the flier with details. Pass the word.
Blessings,
The Planning Committee
___________________________________________________________________

Last week, we wrote to Cati Okorie Hawkins, inquiring about the "usual location", but have not received a response, we know that Sister Cati, who we highly respect and love is very busy...

Rev Hawkins told me at last year event,  when I offered Idriss Stelley Foundation's future collboration : "I have been doing this alone for 11 years. I don't need you !".
I put in on the account of being under pressure with last minute preparations...

SF DA offers a $5000 funeral benefit for the families of Victims of Violent Homicides..... except if PD committed the Homicide...

We wrote  to Assemblyman
Mark leno about the need to write a Bill in order to remedy this injustice.
Last year, at a funeral benefit event for the families of Big O Lefiti and Ssa Sullivan, both Brithers of Color, both UNARMED, at Brett Hart in Bayview, Idriss Stelley Foundation raised $250... Our Poor Community of Color is heavily taxed, and desperately need your help, Mark !

You write:
"We look forward to seeing those who are working to assist affected families, loved ones and communities of homicide victims along with other concerned citizens."

Last year, Idriss Stelley Foundation was invited, and brought along:

*     Atty. Marylon Boyd, mother of Cammerin Boyd
*     Elvira Pollard, mother of Gus Rugley
*     Julio Sr. & Mirna Ayala, parents of Julio Ayala
*     Marie Harrison (Green Action)
*     Maurice Campbell, (director of Community First Coalition)

and was authorized to share the mike for 3 minutes, shared with Mr. Ayala Sr.,  Mrs. Pollard and Mrs. Boyd.

Idriss Stelley Foundation have been providing direct services to grieving families for the past 4 years...
Counseling
Support Groups
24HR Bilingual Crisis line, receiving an average of 400 calls per month...
Managing 71 websites for Grieving Families and Activists Nationwide...

Why do we get this announcement through our dear friend Roberto Ariel Vargas' regular community alerts,
not a word from you, organizers?

Did the following individuals:

Marylon Boyd,
Elvira Pollard ,
Julio Sr.  & Mirna Ayala,

and families of :

Craig Holden,
Asa Sullivan,
Richard Tims.
Greory Hooper,
Big O Lefiti,
Marcos Garcia,
Aaron Williams.
Herbert Tyrelle Watts,
Kathryn Eklund,
Sheila Detoy,
Jahid Akbar,
Tyrelle Taylor,

receive an invitation ?
at the "usual location" ?

Do they qualify as
"Grieving Families"?

Your forwarded message stated twice: :
"see attached flyer".
Upon opening it, we only read a job annoucement at Jamestown Center,
and something about a "FestivalVolcanesJoel" event.

What is about this "usual Location"?
"Accessibility" ?
"Transparency" ?
Anyone ?

We will be happy to forward your announcement to all our listserves, provided that it would include
the LOCATION of May 31, 2007 event,
and a personalized invitation to Grieving Families who lost Loved Ones at the hands of Law Inforcement.

I just wanted to ask everyone to please give a moment for thought,
prayer or reflection on June 6th for all of the loved ones we have
lost in our lives.

My brother was never afraid to speak freely and when he did it was
with life's vigor. Even though his life was silenced by those who
choose to conceal the truth, his life will echo in my heart and I will
remember him this way always.

If anyone will be going to Asa's memorial site, please be respectful
and mindful that people live in the surrounding apartments. The big
tree and sidewalk in front of 2 Garces Street at the Park Merced
Apartments are the designated areas for his memorial. Please leave
only natural items beside the tree if choose to do so. Also, please do
not interact with tenants of the buildings, if you must only then
explain you are showing respect for a person murdered at that apartment.

Be safe and take care.

Hello,

I wanted to remind everone to please take a moment on June 6Th to
remember Asa's spirit.

Asa loved to make people laugh a lot. He had high hopes for his
future and was on the right road to making his life better for
himself and his family.

I will put flowers from our family tomorrow by "the" tree at 2
Garces Drive, San Francisco. Other family and friends will too. The
tree is in front of the apartment where Asa was killed at the
Parkmerced Apt. complex (as many of you already know).

I know some people have to work and/or have children to attend to
tomorrow, Wednesday. It's Ok to stop by the memorial on your own
time as well as this week-end. The parking area very near the actual
address is well used. I expect we will come in small groups and at
different times. Please mapquest if you have never been there.

I had someone leave a message with the president of the Parkmerced
Apt. Neighborhood Association about our one year memorial. The
Association has been very good at keeping an eye on the things we
have left there before. We have had a good relationship with them
since Asa's death. Please be respectful of the people who are living
there.

I think it's a good idea to take snapshots of the tree area if you
are able. I'd like us to be able to share photos on our website. We
know the tree at 2 Garces is not a perminate memorial spot for Asa,
and as such, our items will not stay there forever. I'd love to have
a perminate memorial spot for Asa in the Bay Area (let me know if
anyone has any suggestions).

Also, for those who are out of town or unable to go to Asa's one
year memorial this June 6th, you are welcome to express yourself on
this website. I know there are many who feel strongly about how Asa
died. I'd love to hear about the good times with him as well. This
website is a place to safely express yourself, anytime.

One last thing, there are flowers being placed tomorrow at
Asa's actual grave. I know he has, and will, get all the love we are
sending him.

Thanks everyone for your continued support,

Asa's mom and family
